Greetings, Thank you for taking the time to look through our offering. We are extremely proud of this set of cattle and hope that it shows throughout the catalog. Both the markets and our weather have presented challenges this past year, but they have shown the value in quality, reputable cattle. Rest assured you will find a stout, functional set of bulls that will be ready to work when you attend our sale. Thickness, fleshing ability, structural soundness, and disposition are traits that are key to profitability, and they are traits you will find in each and every bull. Within the group, there are bulls that excel in calving ease, maternal traits, growth, and carcass capabilities. There are many half, three quarter, and full siblings to these bulls in production here at the farm.

Please visit with us if we can help with your selection. We would be glad to describe or show you how they work for us, how we have mated them, and how they have produced. It is the goal of Wildberry Farms to produce a consistent, quality product that can enhance the profitability of all of our customers.

The females offered are a cross section of our entire bred heifer group. The majority of the registered heifers are either sired by or bred to Wildberry bulls. These are the same genetics we use every day. The commercial heifers are sourced from our bull customers, and all are sired by Wildberry bred bulls. They have been sorted on quality, kind and disposition and raised right along with the rest of the group. All of the females offered have been on our vaccination program, which includes modified live vaccines, through their pre-calving shots. We do recommend starting them on your vaccination protocol prior to breeding.

Our Buy Back program has changed for the upcoming year. Instead of buying the calves ourselves, we are working to put together a network of contacts who can assist you in marketing your cattle. SELECTION

The EPDs may change from the time the sale catalog is printed until the registrations papers are transferred. The EPDs in the catalog are Spring 2016 numbers.

HERD HEALTH PROGRAM

All bulls & heifers are on a complete health program and will be accompanied by health papers for shipment anywhere in the United States. All cattle have been vaccinated for PI3, BVD, 7-Way, Blackleg, BRVS and Haemophilus and have been poured and treated with Dectomax.

SIGHT UNSEEN PURCHASES

Can’t visit the farm? Call Robbie, Ben or Jim. We will select the best bull in your price range. Your satisfaction is guaranteed when the bull is delivered, or we will take him home.

SEMEN INTEREST

Take your time selecting the bulls for your operation. We will keep the bulls selected free of charge until June 1, 2016 and have them ready for the breeding season. Bred heifers and heifers with calves at side are to be picked up sale day or delivery arranged shortly thereafter.

Wildberry Farms retains a 1/3 in-herd semen interest in all bulls sold, unless otherwise noted.

PRICING AND SALE FORMAT

There are many motels in the area. Call Robbie, Ben or Jim for help with arrangements.

All bulls are base priced at $2,750, all females base priced at $2,250. Bulls will sell first and follow a sale order. Each lot will begin at the base price.

If more then one person is interested at that price, the lot will be bid off until one bidder remains. Bulls that do not receive the base bid will be skipped over and offered one more time at the conclusion of the bull sale.

The purebred females will sell first followed by the commercial females.

Heifers will be sold choice and privilege, with the buyer having the option on up to 5 head per winning bid. Please feel free to call with any questions about the format.

TRUCKING

Wildberry will provide free delivery within 200 miles of the farm.

SALE LOCATION

The sale will be held at the farm between Elizabeth and Hanover, Illinois.

Three miles south of US 20-Highway 84 intersection or one mile north of Hanover on Highway 84 on the west side of the road.

How to Read the Performance Data

Tattoo: The bulls have a permanent I.D. tattooed in both ears that correspond to the alphanumeric ear tags.

BW: Actual weight taken within the first 24 hours of calving.

Weaning &Yearling Ratios: The bull’s relative performance in relation to his pen mates.

SC: Scrotal Circumference measured in centimeters adjusted for age.

ULTRASOUND CARCASS REA: Adjusted yearling ultrasound rib eye area. %IMF: Adjusted yearling ultrasound for estimated marbling, an indication of quality grade potential.

Back Fat: Measured in hundredths of an inch.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs)

CE: Calving Ease, expressed as a % in deviation from breed average of unassisted calving in two year heifers.

BW: Birth Weight, expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

WW: Weaning Weight, expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

YW: Yearling Weight expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

MCE: Maternal Calving Ease, expressed as a % deviation from breed average of two year old daughters unassisted calving.

Milk: Maternal Milk, expressed in pounds as the deviation in calves weaning weight from breed average from dam’s milking ability only.

I often get asked the question “How much should I pay for a bull?” While no calculator exists to determine the exact price a producer should spend on a bull, there are multiple factors that can be considered to establish a base price. Typical thumb rules that I have heard over the years for value of an average registered bull include 2 times the value of a fed steer, 5 times the value of a feeder calf at weaning, or 25 times the cwt price of feeder calves. In the current market, using these thumb rules, we get a range of $4,000 to $5,200, which is very representative of early sale reports from 2016.

With the recent recession in cattle prices, it is natural to start looking for ways to reduce input costs for the enterprise.

Unfortunately, poorly justified, haphazard budget cuts often begin with the bull battery. I cannot stress enough the value in optimizing your marketing goals through improved male genetics regardless of cost. As bulls represent 50% of the genetics of the program, you cannot afford to give up genetic progress in your herd at the expense of “cheap” bulls that do not match and advance your production goals. Regardless of money spent on a service sire, the bull battery typically represents less than 10% of annual cow costs for the herd. However, the difference in returns between good and below average sires for your traits of interest could be 15% or more. This reemphasizes the value in “paying-up” for a bull that truly meets your marketing goals.

The two primary factors that determine profit in the cow-calf sector are feed costs and pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. As such, there is no substitute for stepping up to the table to invest a few extra dollars in high-quality, registered bulls with proven pedigrees as well as performance and genetic testing. In today’s marketplace, enhancing your factory with a bull that excels in economically relevant traits such as calving ease, maternal calving ease, stayability, growth, and/ or carcass traits will no-doubt maximize profitability in a volatile market and be the best return on your investment.

It should be noted that purchasing a less costly bull does not necessarily insinuate you have purchased inferior breeding piece; however, be sure that the strengths of your new herd sire still improves and complements your existing cowherd without sacrificing you marketing goals.
