AREA HISTORY The greater Palmer and Matanuska Valley area has a history rooted in Alaska Native culture, exploration, agriculture, transportation, and resource development. Athabascan peoples, including Dena’ina and Ahtna communities, traveled throughout the river valleys for thousands of years to fish, hunt, trade, and pursue seasonal activities. Russian and American traders later contacted the region, followed by prospectors, homesteaders, and settlers drawn by its agricultural and mineral resources. Palmer’s modern history took shape in 1935 with the establishment of the Matanuska Colony, a federal New Deal resettlement project. Approximately 203 families from the drought-affected Midwest were relocated to the valley, where each family received a farm tract and support for establishing an agricultural operation. The colony became the foundation for Palmer’s community and agricultural identity. Transportation played an important role in the valley’s development. The railroad provided early access to the region, while the Glenn Highway connected Palmer to Anchorage and the broader Alaska road system. Palmer incorporated as a city in 1951 and became the seat of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough when the borough was established in 1964. Today, Palmer retains its agricultural heritage while serving as a center for government, commerce, recreation, and services. Historic buildings and districts preserve the community’s early character, while continued growth has expanded the region into a diverse residential and economic area. The surrounding Matanuska Valley remains closely associated with farming, open landscapes, and the outdoor lifestyle that continues to define Southcentral Alaska.
