AREA HISTORY This area was a gathering place for the Nez Perce people for thousands of years. Relations with Lewis and Clark began in 1805. A peaceful relationship was established, resulting in the sharing of food and supplies to aid the expedition of Lewis and Clark. Later, with the arrival of settlers and gold explorers, new treaties reduced the size of the Nez Perce people’s homeland. In 1877, a war broke out, causing Chief Joseph to surrender and be exiled.
