AREA HISTORY

The Malad Summit and Downey areas have a rich history tied to Idaho’s ranching and mining roots. Once a major route for settlers heading west, Malad City became a hub for trade and industry. In the late 1800s, mining operations for silver and copper brought a wave of workers and settlers. As the mining faded, the land transitioned to productive agricultural use, with ranching and farming taking center stage. One local legend speaks of the “Malad River Ghost,” a miner who vanished near the river in the late 1800s and is said to wander the riverbanks still seeking his lost treasure.
