The Granger Butte Ranch has 282± deeded acres and another approximately 1,255± acres leased from a private party. At 3,280 feet elevation, the temperature and soils are excellent for alfalfa and grasses for grazing. Presently, 165± acres of alfalfa and pasture are under pivot along with more water rights for a total of 258± acres that can be irrigated. There is a new seeding of alfalfa under one of the pivots, and it will produce a three-cutting crop this coming year. Per the Department of Water Resources, another deep well can be drilled and used for irrigation. Granger Creek flows through the middle of the ranch, a seasonal creek, and the drainage creates wonderful wildlife habitat. The ranch is fully perimeter-fenced and cross-fenced, creating four separate fields.

The terrain and habitat is classic mule deer country, and especially good for pheasants and quail. The ranch is in hunting unit #32 in the Weiser River Zone. The West Mountains have produced many trophy mule deer, and the elk herd from the Payette National Forest is in very good shape; tags are over the counter.

The Little Weiser River is a small trout stream approximately five miles from the ranch. It’s not your typical blue ribbon trout stream, but it can be a fun fishery. You will find Crane Creek Reservoir five miles to the southwest, which receives very little pressure from local fishermen. Brownlee Reservoir/ Hells Canyon is 33 miles to the west and offers a variety of fishing with boat ramps that are up-to-date and easy to use. Every spring, the spawning crappie and bluegill in the shallows offer fast-action fishing. As the temperatures warm and the days become longer, bass fishing takes over as the reason to be on the water. The large reservoir also has some big rainbow trout hanging in the cool waters in the deeper main channel.

The mountains in the area average over 200 to 300 inches of snow a year and offer nothing but delight to the locals. There are endless miles of snowmobiling and cross-country skiing on the open ridges that will take you through the trails throughout the national forest—all close to the ranch.

Brundage Ski Resort, just a few miles from McCall, is approximately 55 miles north of the ranch, offering some of the best powder skiing in the area with close to 400 inches of snow a year. The mountain has been receiving a facelift with many upgrades. At 1,800 vertical feet of skiing, with the longest run just over two miles long, Bundage is a small mountain resort that skis big. The back-country snowcat skiing at Brundage takes in over 19,000 acres of terrain. The mountain is known for having the “Best Powder in Idaho.”

LOCATION

The Granger Butte Ranch is easily accessible and located approximately two hours north of Boise in the Indian Valley, just north of Crane Creek Road. It is 16 miles east of Midvale, Idaho (pop. 320). The region’s economic base consists mainly of farming, ranching, and the many outdoor activities that bring people to the area. Cambridge, just up the road from Midvale, has small family-owned restaurants and enough stores to provide most amenities needed. The High School and Junior High have a small student population, but one the locals love, along with the Council Idaho Schools. The county health center is in Council, about 16 miles to the north.

Hells Canyon and the Snake River are about an hour from the ranch. The location is private and quiet, with thousands of acres of national forest just a few miles away in every direction.
