LOCATION

Crane is in eastern Harney County along Oregon Route 78, which leads northwest 29 miles to Burns and southeast 64 miles to US Route 95 at Burns Junction. According to the US Census Bureau, the Crane CDP has an area of 10.4 square miles, all of it land. It is 6 miles northeast of Malheur Lake and 26 miles by road northeast of the main entrance to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The community is tucked away in a rural setting, encircled by rolling hills and expansive open spaces. The nearby Malheur Lake and Malheur National Wildlife Refuge offer opportunities for outdoor recreation, including fishing, hunting, and birdwatching. The picturesque landscape and rich wildlife attract nature lovers and those seeking a serene escape from city life. As of the 2020 census, there were 116 people, 65 housing units, and 52 families.

AIRPORT SERVICES

There are two great options surrounding Chukar Buttes Ranch when it comes to flying. One hundred seventy miles west, you’ll find Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM), the closest major airport. RDM is located in the heart of Central Oregon and is currently served by five air carriers: Alaska Air, American Airlines, Avelo, Delta Airlines, and United/United Express, with daily direct flights to Denver, Palm Springs, Portland, Las Vegas, Los Angeles International, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Sonoma. RDM offers 30 daily commercial flights, affordable parking rates, and short lines. The airport is home to the USDA Forest Service Redmond Air Center, Life Flight, Butler Aircraft Services, Les Schwab, Bonneville Power, and Henderson Aviation. WATER RIGHTS

Under Oregon law, all water belongs to the public. With some exceptions, cities, irrigators, businesses, and other water users must obtain a permit or license from the Water Resources Department to use water from any source—whether it is underground or from lakes or streams.
