AREA HISTORY The Clark and Clarks Fork region is steeped in the history of the American West. Long before settlement, Indigenous peoples traveled, hunted, and lived throughout the Yellowstone, Absaroka, and Beartooth country. In 1877, Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce traveled through the greater Yellowstone region during their remarkable flight toward Canada, with today’s Chief Joseph Scenic Byway commemorating that history. Legendary mountain man Jim Bridger also knew the Yellowstone country intimately. In 1864, the Bridger Trail carried emigrants north through the Bighorn Basin and across the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone on their way to Montana’s gold fields. The Clarks Fork River later became central to settlement in the valley, where water and productive ground supported generations of farmers and ranchers.
