AIR CIRCULATORS OVERVIEW Maintaining and improving worker productivity is critical in today’s business environment. Providing a comfortable workspace is one of the tools available to employers to maximize employee productivity. The proper application of air circulators can improve comfort levels throughout your facility, air conditioned or not. With a complete line of fans designed for use in heavy industrial to light commercial applications, Marley air circulators are ideal for warehouse ventilating, loading dock, and assembly line applications.

TYPES OF AIR CIRCULATORS

Industrial Air Circulator Heads: Industrial air circulators are the most common high performance fans used in warehouse and manufacturing facilities. Portable pedestal mounts and fixed wall, ceiling, or I-beam mounts provide the flexibility to meet most applications.

Oscillating Air Circulator Heads: Oscillating mechanisms move the fan head back and forth to efficiently cover a large area without focusing the air stream on a single workstation.

Drum Fans: High volume drum fans are ideal for moving a large amount of air into or across a building. Belt drive units offer quieter operation and higher CFM. Direct drive units provide maintenance free operation and high CFM at an economical price.

Utility Fans: Small permanently mounted workstation fans are designed for individual workstations.

Floor Fans: These portable and durable ventilating solutions work well for workers that move around from one location to another.

HEAT RECOVERY FANS

Winter: Large industrial ceiling fans are designed to recover wasted heat by eliminating heat stratification in the building. Trapped warm air is pulled down from an often uninsulated ceiling, improving comfort levels, reducing heat loss, and lowering heating costs.

Summer: General air recirculation in non air-conditioned buildings creates a cooling breeze and a “Wind Chill Factor” providing evaporation cooling of the skin surface dropping shin temperature by 6 degrees.

FEATURES TO COMPARE

CFM: A unit of measure depicting the amount of air flow provided by a fan (Cubic Feet per Minute). Higher CFM ratings mean more air flow and a greater cooling effect from the fan.

HP: A unit of measure indicating the strength of the motor (horsepower). Higher HP fans will typically have higher CFM ratings because more power is available to push the air.

AMP: A unit of electric current closely related to HP. Higher amps generally mean increased power and better air movement.

RPM: A unit of measure depicting the speed that a motor rotates (Revolutions Per Minute). Lower RPM fans are preferred because they create less noise.

RPM has little impact on the CFM rating.

TEAO Motor: Totally Enclosed Air Over motors are sealed from the dirt and dust commonly found in warehousing and manufacturing environments.

ODP Motor: Open Drip Proof motors are common in retail and light commercial applications. Because they are vented to the environment, dirt, oil, and moisture can build up inside the motor causing premature failure.

Fan Blade: Blade design has the greatest impact on the performance of a fan.

Quality steel hubs ensure safe operation, while lightweight steel blades ensure

that maximum performance is delivered from the fan. Inexpensive stamped aluminum blades are more likely to develop cracks at the hub and may deform after extended use. Heavy cast aluminum blades require the motor to work harder and therefore less energy is available to circulate the air.

Safety Guard: The guard is designed to prevent accidental contact with moving blades as well as contain the fan blade should a failure occur. Plant managers should ensure that any fan in your facility meets the OSHA Standard 1910.212.

Before After General air recirculation in non air-conditioned buildings creates a cooling breeze and a “Wind Chill Factor” providing evaporation cooling of the skin surface dropping skin temperature by 6°. The LEADING EDGE fan system supplements air-conditioned buildings by allowing the thermostat settings to be 8° higher. You’ll feel the coolness of 72° with the thermostat set on 80° - an incomparable energy savings. Additional advantages, eliminates mold and mildew caused by stagnant air, perfect for high humidity areas. No other fan has our higher air velocity capabilities. Small fans do not develop sufficient CFM to be effective in warm weather.

LEADING EDGE treats ceiling fans as a system, not as single unit – our fans provide larger area of coverage than competition; therefore require fewer fans to perform the same function. Furthermore, the heavy duty design allows considerable savings to maintenance or replacement costs. Substantial savings are realized on the total installed costs of the system on a per square foot basis, which can be calculated via the following formula to the right. An extreme example would be the use of discount store or home center promotional $49.95 fans. Let’s assume these imported 56 in. curved tipped patio fans could overcome the AT buoyancy factor and could cover 900 ft.2 per fan. The result is that 65 fans would have to be installed and no summertime cooling would be achieved. The low priced fan with its hidden additional costs is no bargain. Residential patio fans are commonly rated at 400 ft.2 per fan (20x 20 living room with an 8 ft. ceiling).

UNIT & PORTABLE HEATERS OVERVIEW The Marley line of commercial and industrial unit heaters are among the most widely specified and installed electric unit heaters in North America. With a broad line of models providing up to 50 KW (170,000 BTU) of heating power, Marley unit heaters fit a variety of industrial applications including primary heating, supplementary heating, and spot heating.

Electric unit heaters are a clean, safe, and a very efficient form of heating. They do not require piping, valves, or traps associated with gas or steam models and there are no combustion fumes or water vapor produced, eliminating the need for secondary exhaust systems.

All Marley unit heaters are equipped with heavy duty steel enclosures with a durable powder coat finish, totally enclosed motors, and steel sheath heating elements that provide years of near maintenance free operation.

The unique pull through design and specially designed venturi outlet of the commercial series unit heaters provide superior air throw and heat distribution.

Adjustable louvers allow heated air to be directed where it will do the most good. In addition, a choice of mounting methods allows either fixed mounting to the ceiling, or wall mounting on an optional swivel bracket.

INFRARED HEATERS OVERVIEW Heat from the sun, from the fireplace or a glowing ingot of iron is infrared radiation. This heat can be optically directed making it ideally suited in spot heating applications where it can warm the person or target object. This means that heat can be directed downward, horizontally, upward or any angle between. Electric Radiant heaters and Infrared heaters, are non-fan forced heaters that convert electrical power into Infrared Radiant energy to heat people and objects, for increased comfort or to prevent freezing conditions, without directly heating the surrounding air.

The unique advantages of electric infrared heat – Infrared permits heating areas where it is impractical, either physically or economically, to heat the air – outdoor areas, high ceiling buildings, poorly insulated buildings and specific portions of an overall large area (spot heating or heating “rooms without walls”).

ZONE CONTROL FLEXIBILITY – Intensity of radiation warmth can be varied between adjacent areas since air temperature is a subordinate factor. Examples include; cold areas in a room, gymnasium playing areas in contrast to spectator seating areas and isolated work stations.

CLEAN and SAFE – With electric infrared there is no combustion fumes or water vapor produced, eliminating the need for additional exhaust ventilation systems. Infrared heat allows the heating of only those spaces being used and not the entire area.

AIR CURTAINS OVERVIEW Air Curtains are used for a wide variety of applications from thermal barriers at shopping mall entrances, to fly and insect prevention at restaurant service doors, to factory freight doors for wind resistance and temperature separation. The air curtain enables traffic to flow unobstructed through openings while maintaining distinct environments, thus resulting in energy savings.

The most common type of air curtain is the horizontal, non- recirculating, single jet type. It will satisfy the majority of needs for commercial and industrial applications. The discharge velocity of the air curtain can range from 600 ft/min, for entranceways, to over 5,000 ft/min, for sealing environments from wind effects and insects.

How Air Curtains Work

Air curtains consist of a fan and nozzle system which create a jet of high velocity air directed across a door opening, providing a protective air shield. The air shield minimizes the transfer of heat, moisture, dust, fumes and insects through the doorway.

Air curtains, as illustrated in Figure 1, pull in air and accelerate it through the fan and nozzle system, thus creating a moving wall of air across the opening or doorway. The air curtain fan adds kinetic energy to the air, providing the resistance to the penetration of unwanted air or particles. This added kinetic energy in the discharge air also resists the penetration of outside air due to the wind, as well as the invasion of insects. The air is provided at a critical velocity and volume flow as well as at a discharge angle selected for its particular application.

Advantages of Air Curtains

Air curtains provide environmental separation for open doorways. This is achieved without the drawbacks of visibility limiting solid barriers such as strip and impact doors.

Air curtains reduce the risk of accidents by allowing vehicles and people to move through doorways without obstructions to visibility or movement. While allowing this freedom of movement through doorways, air curtains minimize the natural convection flow of air, provide excellent resistance to the penetration of outside winds, and prevent the intrusion of flies and other insects, fumes and dust.

Air curtains also reduce mechanical door maintenance costs, and are more aesthetically appealing than plastic strip doors or high-speed doors.

Applications are: Thermal Barriers for conditioned space isolation; Wind Resistance for protecting exterior doorways in buildings from unconditioned air; Interior Separation for particle and dust control; and Fly and Insect Control for sanitation maintenance.
