Screw Points TYPE AB POINT (aka GIMLET) - Thread forming screw that combines the locating point of a Type A with the thread size & pitch of a Type B. Used in thin metal, resinous plywood, & various composite boards TYPE-17 POINT - a thread cutting screw designed especially for wood, features a coarse tapping screw thread and a long sharp point fluted to capture chips SHARP POINT - thread forming screw for use in thin metal. impregnated plywood, or combinations of materials SELF DRILLING - features a drilling point that will drill through metal, wood, & plastic. No punching, drilling, or tapping required SELF DRILLING w/ WINGS - similar to a Self Drilling screw, but has wings that drill a clearance hole for the screw. These are suitable for thicker materials and is designed specifically for joining wood to metal CUP POINT - features a cup shape indentation, usually found on a set screw
Screw Thread Styles
Fastener Materials ZINC PLATED STEEL - moderately corrosion resistant but will rust, commonly referred to as clear (silver color) or yellow (golden color) zinc STAINLESS STEEL - offers a good level of corrosion resistance, suitable for marine & outdoor use. HOT DIPPED GALVANIZED - thicker zinc coating with a higher corrosion resistance, ideal for outdoor use
BRONZE & BRASS - typically used in decorative applications, these are copper alloys that offer good corrosion resistance
SILICONE BRONZE - used primarily in marine environments, superior corrosion resistance
ALUMINUM - corrosion resistant material that is soft & light CHROME - offers moderate corrosion resistance featuring a smooth & polished appearance
ALLOY STEEL - usually black oxide, highly hardened offering very little corrosion resistance
HI-LO - dual thread design commonly used in low density materials
COARSE THREAD - for attaching drywall to softwood studs
METAL TAPPING - commonly found on most Sheet Metal Screws
FINE THREAD - for attaching drywall to metal studs

KNURLS - help reduce splitting & mushrooming
HOW ARE FASTENERS DESCRIBED?
Zinc, Pan Head Phillips, Machine Screw, 1/4"-20 x 3" Material
Head Styles
Fastener Type
Drive Types
HEX - typically used on larger bolts & screws, tightened with a wrench
PHILLIPS - common but prone to cam-out (stripping)
PAN - feature a slightly domed head that sits above the surface
SLOTTED - common but prone to cam-out (stripping)
FLAT - allows for a flat smooth surface after use
COMBO - can be used with both a Phillips or Slotted driver
BUGLE - countersunk style used in drywall & decking TRUSS - slightly domed, wide head for extra large surface area MODIFIED TRUSS / K LATH - truss with an extra flange around the outside of it to increase bearing force OVAL - countersunk with a domed top SOCKET - narrow with a socket drive, knurled or smooth sides
Diameter
Thread Count/Pitch Thread density is specified as THREADS PER INCH (US) or as a THREAD PITCH (Metric) A fastener may be available in coarse (standard), fine, and ocassionally super fine thread
Diameter
For most types of fasteners the diameter is measured on the outside of the threads
HEX - use a wrench or nut driver to install SQUARE - square shaped socket decreases the possibility of slippage
STAR - features a six pointed star shape resistant to cam-out. Also referred to as a TORXŠ drive SOCKET - hex shaped internal socket tightened & loosened with an Allen wrench or hex key
Length
Diameter Diameters under 1/4" are given as numbers (ex.. #8) instead of inches
Measuring Length The distance from the tip of the screw to the flat part of the head that sits flush with your material
Length
Length 9
Flat Washers SAE (narrow)
Locking & Specialty Washers SPLIT LOCK - Places tension against a nut after tightening to prevent loosening
USS (wider)
Works best with larger screws or bolts, it has EXTERNAL TOOTH - teeth that extend outward to bite into the bearing surface Designed to prevent a nut or bolt head from INTERNAL TOOTH - loosening with the strut action of the teeth
Fender Washer (larger specified outer diameter)
Neoprene washer bonded to a metal BONDED WASHER - backing, helps prevent leakage Used where appearance is important with a FINISHING WASHER - flat head screw to provide a clean appearance
Nuts HEX NUTS -
the most common nut, hex shaped with internal threads, usually driven by a wrench
SQUARE NUT - four sided hex nut that provides greater resistance to loosening (though also greater resistance to tightening) JAM NUT -
COUPLING NUT -
CAP NUT -
ACORN NUT -
10
similar to a hex nut but thinner, often used with a hex nut to achieve a locking result
threaded fastener used for joining two male threads, most commonly threaded rod
provides a decoratve finish, low profile allows threads to come in contact with the dome higher profile than a cap nut to protect the threads of the bolt
sales@fasteningspecialists.com
uses a nylon ring to increase friction NYLON INSERT - locking the nut in place LOCK NUT
has distorted threads which resist PREVAILING METAL - loosening, often used in high LOCK NUT temperature applications K-LOCK NUTS -
CASTLE NUT -
SLOTTED NUT -
has an attached lock washer used with a cotter pin to prevent loosening
similar to a castle nut but with a lower profile
used to fasten wood, composite, or particle board. Often has 3-4 prongs T-NUT - that slip into to surface for improved retention WING NUT -
nuts with wings to allow for manual installation
BASIC FASTENER TYPES
(we stock a full range of fasteners in addition to what is listed here)
HEX BOLTS (aka Cap Screws) - typically used in machinery & construction. Fully threaded Hex Bolts are known as Tap Bolts
Grade/Class BONDED WASHER SCREWS -bonded sealing washer makes for a water tight seal. Available in both self drilling (metal to metal) and sharp points (metal to wood)
US BOLTS are described as Grade 2, Grade 5, & Grade 8
TAP BOLTS - similar to a hex bolt but is fully threaded SHEET METAL SCREW - used in sheet metal, needs pilot hole drilled in order to prevent splitting
CARRIAGE BOLTS - machine screw with a domed head and a squared section underneath
LAG SCREW - large wood screw with a hex head
SOCKET SCREWS - machine screw with an internal hex (Allen) socket drive
MACHINE SCREWS - fully threaded for use with a nut or a tapped hole
SELF DRILLING SCREWS - sheet metal screw with a self drilling tip (often called "self tapping" or "Tek") requires no pilot hole
METRIC BOLTS are described as Class 8.8, Class 10.9, & Class 12.9
CONCRETE SCREWS - for attaching materials to a predrilled hole in concrete
DRYWALL SCREWS - used to attach drywall to studs
DECKING SCREWS - treated lumber approved corrosion resistant screw used for outdoor wood projects
WOOD SCREW - large threads & a smooth shank for pulling two pieces of material together
LARGE DIAMETER TAPCONS (LDT) removable self-threading anchor designed for use in concrete
