A DUTCH G ETAWAY

Pens, Botters, and Hidden Gems in Eemnes

When people think of the Netherlands, most immediately picture the canals and culture of Amsterdam. But for my wife Karin and me, our travels tend to lead us off the beaten path—and this time was no different. Over the past few years, we’ve explored a variety of destinations across Europe: Southern France, Brittany, Normandy, Bruges, and of course, our beloved London. Just last summer, we even made our way to Tokyo and Okinawa to visit our son at Kadena Air Base.

This June, however, our journey brought us back to the Netherlands—specifically to Utrecht—for a unique reason.

Aurora, and Pelikan—it was a paradise for pen enthusiasts. To make the most of our trip, we booked a charming Airbnb in Eemnes, a small village just outside Utrecht.

Our hosts, Ernesto and Saskia Hilgersom, offered a warm welcome and a stay in a 200-year-old guest

Karin, an avid collector of writing pens, discovered the Dutch Pen Show. Featuring over 100 vendors—including names like Appelboom, PW Akkerman,

source: www.benbeemnes.nl

cottage brimming with rustic charm. Each morning, Ernesto delivered a fresh breakfast right to our door—punctual, delicious, and personal. Eemnes is nestled at the edge of the ‘Het Gooi’ region, known for its affluence and picturesque countryside. With no public transportation, a car—or a bicycle—is essential. Fortunately, surrounding towns and villages are easily reachable and perfect for day trips.

Ernesto’s local insight was invaluable. Knowing my love for classic cars, he pointed us to the Cool Classic Club in nearby Naarden—a museum

of over 100 restored vintage automobiles, many with sixfigure price tags. We also browsed through countless brocantes (flea markets) and antique shops, discovering treasures we only wished we had more room to bring home.

Ernesto & Saskia

Culinary stops during our trip were delightfully varied—ranging from cozy village pubs and charming pastry shops to casual pizza nights and even Chinese takeout. But one dining experience stood out above the rest: Het Oude Raadhuis in Eemnes.

Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, this restaurant offered a fine dining experience that, while not officially Michelin-rated, delivered every bit of that caliber in both service and cuisine. From the moment we stepped inside, the atmosphere was warm and elegant, with a modern yet intimate charm that made us feel instantly welcome. Each dish was not only expertly prepared but also presented with stunning attention to detail—truly a feast for both the eyes and palate

It’s clear why this restaurant is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Reservations are highly recommended, as tables fill quickly, especially on weekends. For Karin and me, Het Oude Raadhuis was a culinary highlight of our trip— one that we’ll remember long after the last bite.

One of the most memorable and unexpected highlights of our trip was a Saturday visit to the charming harbor village of Spakenburg. At first glance, it appeared to be a quiet coastal town, but we quickly discovered it was brimming with history and tradition. That morning, we arrived just in time to witness a remarkable sight— dozens of beautifully restored wooden fishing boats, known as botters, preparing to set sail.

These classic Dutch vessels, once used for commercial fishing on the Zuiderzee, are now lovingly maintained and form one of the largest historical fleets in the Netherlands. Watching them glide out of the harbor in a celebratory procession was like stepping back in time. Each boat was filled with families and friends, many dressed in traditional Dutch attire, laughing and waving as the boats drifted out to sea. The entire scene

had the feel of a community celebration—joyful, authentic, and deeply rooted in maritime heritage.

Beyond the harbor, Spakenburg’s historic village center was just as captivating. Cobblestone streets wound through rows of gabled brick buildings, many of which housed boutiques, antique shops, bakeries, and quaint cafés. Karin and I spent hours browsing the local offerings—everything from handcrafted gifts and Dutch delicacies to vintage finds and coastal-themed décor. The slower pace of the village, combined with its timeless beauty, gave us a true sense of Dutch life outside the big cities.

Spakenburg turned out to be a perfect blend of cultural charm and smalltown hospitality—and for us, an unforgettable addition to our offthe-beaten-path Dutch adventure.

TRANSYLVANIA NIA

In the enchanting medieval town of Sighișoara, where cobblestone streets wind between colorful houses, history took a dark turn in 1431 when Vlad III, the man who would become known as “Vlad the Impaler”, drew his first breath. The prince of Wallachia would later inspire Bram Stoker’s immortal creation, transforming a complex historical figure into literature’s most enduring villain, making Romania a must visit Halloween destination during your stay in Europe.

Once celebrated as a hero who defended his homeland, Vlad’s reputation became tied to his ruthless methods of punishment, legends tell of 20,000 enemies who died by impalement, his preferred form of execution. Shining Bright in Support of Education

This summer, the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Libraries ignited imaginations and turned up the energy during the 2025 Summer Reading Program—an 8-week challenge that delivered massive results in record time!

Kicking off with a high-octane launch event, the 86 FSS Libraries packed in the excitement. In just 2 action-filled hours, over 700 patrons flooded the Ramstein Library, averaging 350 guests per hour.

That’s right! Compared to the 8-hour kickoff in 2024, this year’s crowd came in stronger, faster, and more energized than ever.

The event buzzed with fun as the USO served up popcorn and ice pops, while our Library Programming Team led children in crafting adorable animal face masks. And that was only the beginning.

Over the following 8 weeks, readers soared past expectations, logging nearly 3.5 million minutes of reading, a 25% increase in weekly reading compared to 2024.

The program also saw a 10% rise in active readership, 40% increase in new readers, nearly 5,500 books read, over 6,000 badges earned and 450+ reading challenges completed

Thanks to our generous sponsors, top-tier readers were entered into a grand prize drawing that included the brand-new Nintendo Switch 2, a Switch OLED, and several exciting gift cards. And to top it off, 50 back-to-school backpacks were gifted to participating families!

From the buzz of the kickoff to the final badge earned, the 2025 Summer Reading Program proved once again that Ramstein readers are unstoppable. Thank you to everyone who made this summer a celebration of learning, fun, and community spirit!

Abig thank you and heartfelt shoutout to the Stars of Light Chapter #194, OES-PHA, Jurisdiction of Louisiana, District 17 for once again illuminating our community with generosity and purpose! For the fifth consecutive year, this extraordinary organization has donated 50 backpacks for our Library’s Back to School Program, helping students begin the academic year with confidence and the tools for success.

Established in 2019 in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, the Stars of Light Chapter continues to set an inspiring example of charity, service, and community leadership. With a strong focus on youth, education, and outreach, they consistently demonstrate what it means to uplift and invest in the next generation.

Your dedication makes a lasting impact, and we are deeply honored to partner with such a remarkable chapter in lighting the way toward brighter futures!
