CHARITABLE GIFTS FROM RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS If you are like most Americans, retirement plan accounts such as pension plans, IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s or other tax-deferred plans comprise a sizable portion of your estate. While it seems intuitive to leave retirement plan assets to your loved ones in your estate plans, these assets are subject to high taxes and numerous regulations that can significantly diminish the value of your accounts when they vest with loved ones. Benefits of Naming The Rams Club as a Beneficiary of a Retirement Account:
• Distributions taken by your heirs on inherited accounts are subject to income taxation at their highest applicable tax rate. However, retirement assets left to charitable organizations such as The Rams Club are not subject to income tax. As a result, retirement plan assets are available in their entirety to support your priorities at The Rams Club. • If you have a taxable estate, the combination of applicable taxes (estate, federal and state income taxes) could erode as much as 70 percent of the retirement account’s value. • If you have a taxable estate, you may receive estate tax savings through an estate tax charitable deduction. • Naming The Rams Club as a beneficiary of your retirement plan is easy – no reformation of your will is required, only completion of a beneficiary designation form with your plan administrator. Have you already named The Rams Club as a beneficiary of your retirement account? If you have already included The Rams Club as a beneficiary of a retirement account, please share your plans with us so that we can ensure that any future proceeds support Carolina Athletics’ priorities that are most important to you. We would also like to thank you for including us in your plans and welcome you as a member of Carolina Forever. How do I name The Rams Club as a beneficiary of my retirement account? The Rams Club and Carolina’s Office of Gift Planning welcome the opportunity to help you think through the details of your planning, provide the information you will need to update your beneficiary designation form, and offer suggestions for ensuring The Rams Club understands how your future gift should be used to support Carolina Athletics’ and your priorities.

Robin Ratchford developed his loyalties to Carolina at a young age. The Gastonia native made the drive to and from Chapel Hill often while his mother was pursuing a Master’s degree at UNC. “UNC’s campus made a significant impression on me as a child,” reflects Robin. That loyalty hasn’t wavered since, as Robin still can be found on the road between Chapel Hill and Richmond, Va. (his current hometown) traveling to see his Tar Heels play. Robin joined The Rams Club more than 30 years ago because “I wanted to help Carolina remain competitive in college athletics by attracting the best student-athletes possible,” he shared. He has supported 16 different funding priorities from the Annual Fund to facilities and everything in between. Three of those initiatives (the scholarship endowment and operating endowments for men’s and women’s basketball) will ultimately receive significant support from Robin as a result of deferred gifts that Robin has established by naming The Rams Club a beneficiary of an IRA and a life insurance policy. “I want to help sustain The Rams Club and its mission forever. As the costs of educating and recruiting the best athletes continue to increase, the need to maintain this mission becomes even more critical so Carolina can recruit the best student-athletes in the country!”
