Board of Trustees to Consider Increase in Parking Fees and Fines

The State Center Community College District board of trustees is reviewing recommendations from the district police that parking permit fees and parking fines be increased over the next three years, starting in January 2015.

The board will allow public comments on the proposed increase before voting on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

After an initial increase next semester, the fees would continue to rise in the next semesters until Fall 2018 when the fees will settle at $30 for a semester and $20 in the summer. The

price of parking citations will also increase from $16 to $40 each incident.

Christine Miktarian, interim associate vice chancellor of business and operations and Bruce Hartman, chief of SCCCD police asked the Board of Trustees during its Nov. 5 meeting to increase the parking permit fees from the current $17 a semester to $20, beginning in the spring of 2015.

“With the citation fee increase, we are really hoping that more people get permits,” Hartman said. “Hopefully with more permits, there are less tickets and everything begins to balance out.”

The increase in fees is expected to bring in close to $1 million for repairs and refurbishing of the parking lots

across SCCCD campuses.

The parking lots were renovated over the summer when they were sealed to extend the usable life of the asphalt in the parking lot.

The Clovis Community College Associated Student Government is the only group within the district that has voiced displeasure with the proposed plan.

According to a resolution passed by the group on Oct. 29, an increase in parking fees discourages part-time students from staying in college and completing their education.

Colin Van Loon, Clovis Community College Center ASG president, said the fee increase works against the rationale for the California Community

Colleges.

“One of the goals of the community college system is to give access to the working student,” Van Loon said, “not to make it so expensive that they can no longer afford to come.”

The Fresno City College ASG signed on to a resolution with the other campuses throughout the state of California, asking district administrators to look into an array of options for raising funds before increasing fees on the students.

“We are not against the idea [parking fee increase],” said Ignacio Barbosa, FCC student senator. “But we would like the administration to look at all ways of funding; that is really all we ask.”

Victims, Heroes and the Fight for Survival

Grisanti Valencia, immigration rights activist and former senator on Fresno City College’s Associated Student Government, was one of the millions of people who listened to every word President Obama said during his recent speech on immigration.

Valencia’s mother, Belen Avendano was equally anxious to find out what would become of her quest to stay and legalize her status in the U.S. She has lived in the U.S. for 20 years, but with fear and threats of deportation hanging over her head each day, each day is ruled by anxiety and uncertainty.

Valencia and her mother are among the estimated 11 million of undocumented immigrants whose lives would be potentially transformed by President Obama’s executive action on immigration announced Nov. 20.

In his speech, Obama announced that Immigrations and Customs enforcement would “establish clearer priorities” that would allow the Department of Homeland Security to more easily increase the deportation of recent arrivals, adding to the more than two million deported under the current administration.

The Department of Homeland Security will also be expanding upon the existing Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals program as well as creating an entirely new deferred action program for those parents of U.S citizens or lawful permanent residents.

The Obama plan will grant about five million undocumented immigrants the opportunity to avoid deportation by following a few simple steps.

According to a release sent out by the white house, the undocumented immigrants must register and pass criminal and national security background checks, begin to pay taxes and temporarily remain in the United States.

“We’re not going to deport you and separate you from your kids,” Obama said.

This executive order does not cover a huge portion of that community -- leaving millions of undocumented immigrants in limbo and in fear of deportation.

“A lot of people have been fighting for this for a long time,” said Valencia.

“It doesn’t meet what a lot of us really wanted.” The president’s long awaited action has received both support and criticism from all sides.

“It’s Congress’ turn to act,” Valencia said. “But we feel that if he was going to do something so minimal, he might as well have done nothing at all.”

Many of the 11 million undocumented immigrants tell compelling stories of the desperation that led to the huge risk they took to come to the U.S. Regardless of where they started or ended up, many, like Avendano were determined to provide support and a better opportunity for their families -- a quality that they share with people all over the world.

That determination is what still drives her daughter today.

“We want to expand the mind of people,” Valencia said. “When it comes to undocumented immigrants, we call them criminals. What we’re saying is that their being, their love for their family that is illegal.”

That determination is also what propelled Avendano, who was only 15 years old at the time, to make the long and dangerous journey to the U.S. She

The journey began in Ayoguesco, Oaxaca, Mexico and involved a treacherous ride on a raft across the Rio Grande into Texas. Avendeno and her stepmother later traveled to California where they settled.

“They [her mother and step-grandmother] were the only women among 18 men,” Valencia said as she recounted the story of her mother’s journey.

“Her stepmother protected; she was her guardian.”

Valencia was a child when she and her siblings entered the U.S. with forged documents. She had documentation for a male child and had to wear boys’ clothes. Although Valencia had to cross the border as a boy, she did not leave behind one of her favorite possessions, a doll.

“I never understood why, as a boy, I would have had a doll,” Valencia said.

“But I’m glad nobody questioned it too much.”

While getting into the country presents often insurmountable challenges, life in the U.S. without documentation, presents many others.

After arriving in the U.S. Valencia, her mother and her sister, Yenedit Valencia, filed for U-visas, a stay and relief from deportation for the victims of physical or mental abuse.

Both Valencia and her sister were granted the visa, but their mother’s was denied for insufficient evidence that she too had been abused.

“It was bittersweet,” Valencia said.

“Because we got it and my mom didn’t get it, and I feel like she deserved it the most.”

And after all of the years of living in the shadows because of her undocumented status, Obama’s announcement meant the world for Avendano

and those like her.

As the president spoke, the tension grew. When Obama finally reached the moment millions had waited for, Valencia and her mother knew that things could potentially change forever.

“My mother does qualify,” Valencia said. “But she is not happy.”

Mother and daughter alike see flaws in the plan, namely the fact that it is only temporary cover and that so many do not qualify for the relief from deportation.

According to estimates, around five million of the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. will be eligible to register and remain in the country without fear of deportation.

The president understands the shortcomings of his plan and has put it on congress to put forth a more comprehensive solution.

“Pass a bill. Nobody is stopping them from passing a bill,” Obama said.

“Right after Thanksgiving, call the bill.

It’s been sitting there. And if they don’t want to pass that bill, then I pledge to work with Republicans and Democrats next year to pass a more permanent legislative solution.”

A more permanent solution would not only affect Avendeno and other undocumented parents, but also the children who were already granted relief under President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in 2012.

Angel Sanchez, a graphic design student at FCC, is one of thousands of young immigrants who benefited from the 2012 DACA program.

DACA granted young immigrants the right to remain in the U.S. for two years at a time and obtain a work permit.

The recent order issued by the president grants newly qualified immigrants the right to remain in the country for three years at a time and also obtain a work permit.

A previous campus leader and voice for immigrant students on campus, Sanchez sought to direct undocumented students to resources offered by the college. He said, however, that due to the lack of response from the president on immigration, he lost faith and hope of any relief.

“I haven’t been following the story as much as I probably should,” Sanchez said. “They had been saying they will do something good for a while so I guess I have to get caught up.”

Sanchez had hopes for broad administrative relief from the president.

His goals for such relief were simple.

“Just stop separating families,” Sanchez said. “You take out the man of the household, then the wife or the children have to find a way to work; they have to be able to survive.”

Not separating families is something that all parties have been able to agree on, as the president has used it as a point while trying to gather support for his plan.

“I’ve seen the heartbreak and anxiety of children whose mothers might be taken away from them just because they didn’t have the right papers,” Obama said.

There are about 750 undocumented students on the FCC campus. These students, save for the immigration status, are involved in everyday events of the college. Valencia is hoping to take on the challenge of leading them.

“One day I hope that the world can live without borders, because that’s how things started,” Valencia said.

“We’re getting closer but still have a long way to go.”

Meet The New State Center Community College District Trustees

Miguel Arias: “By partnering with our local K-12 school districts we can ensure students enter community college better prepared to achieve graduation.

This also means strengthening the transfer rate to four year universities.”

These are the words from one of the newest State Center Community College District Trustee, Miguel Angel Arias. He is arranged to change our community college to a more advanced and technology forward place for students.Arias believes that technology is our future.

A native of Mendota, a rural agricultural community in western Fresno County, Arias’s family labored in the fields as farmworkers. After graduating from Mendota High School, Arias attended California State University, Fresno where he studied Criminology and Chicano Latino Studies.

While at CSU Fresno, he accepted a position with the U.S. House of Representatives where he worked as a district representative and legislative assistant to Congressman Calvin Dooley in both the Fresno and Washington D.C. offices.

During his time in Washington D.C., Arias established an immigration education program and staffed the bipartisan House Task force on Immigration Reform.

Bobby Kahn Another newly added member to the State Center Community College District Board of Trustees is, Bobby Kahn, a past chairman and current treasurer of the California Central Valley Economic Development Corporation.

Khan has spent 12 years as a member of the California Association for Local Economic Development and serves on their Legislative Action Committee.

He also accepted the position of Executive Director of the Madera County Economic Development Commission (MCEDC) in March of 2002.

MCEDC is a Joint Powers Agency formed through an agreement between the City of Madera, City of Chowchilla and the County of Madera -- Khan handles all economic development related issues, including commercial and industrial development projects, for all three jurisdictions.

District Says Farewell to Long-serving Trustee, Dorothy Smith

As a member of the State Center Community College District Board of Trustees, Dorothy Smith, also known as “Dottie”, has accomplished many things. She established the Anna Mae Candler Nursing Scholarship as well as the middle class students scholarship for students whose parents make too much for financial aid but not enough to pay all the cost of attending school.

Since her election into the Board in November of 1981, Smith has committed herself to doing what she could to do what she felt was bettering the district.

“People may doubt it but that’s what the job entails,” Smith said.

“Dealing with the doubters comes with the territory.”

Smith, who is the longest serving member on the board lost in an election to Miguel Arias and will no longer be serving as the district 5 trustee.

Although Smith had already served 30 plus years on the Board, her plans

for improving the district were not finished.

She planned to continue plans to work with local K-12 schools to ensure that all students are ready for college by the time that they get here.

“All students should have an opportunity to succeed.” Smith said.

Reports given from the California Community College Chancellor’s office show that students who are college ready and have no need to take remediation classes have a greater chance of college success.

“I am truly blessed, when I think back on all of the things that we have done.” Smith said.

With her term coming to an end in [TIME], after 33 years of service to the district some wonder what will happen moving forward with the board of trustees.

“She has been a pioneer for minority women who might consider or be remotely interested in serving their communities in ways other than being PTA moms.” said Dr. Jenine

Brown, English instructor at Fresno City College.

Brown, while explaining how Smith has inspired her, said that as minority woman sometimes to truly believe that success is possible you need to see someone that “looks like you succeed” and that Smith has provided that for many young women today.

“She has been a pioneer for minority women who might consider or be remotely interested in serving their communities in ways other than being PTA moms.”

ASG, Others Offer Aid to Help Students

The countdown to the end of semester has commenced. Last-minute studying, coupled with end-of-semester research projects, can be stressful.

The Associated Students Government at Fresno City College is organizing Ram Slam, a week of study aid in order to alleviate stress from finals.

Accompanying ASG in lending a helpful hand, students and tutors provide advice for ensuring an easy transition to the last weeks of Fall 2014.

The Ram Slam consists of final cram sessions which will be held in the FCC library on Dec. 2-4, starting at 6:30 p.m. and ending at 10:30 p.m.

The last cram session will be on Saturday, Dec. 6, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at noon with a hot dog barbecue.

“We will be providing students with coffee, snacks, a place to study and tutors,” said Christian Sierra, ASG committee head overseeing Ram Slam.

Demi Rueda, photography student at FCC not only recognizes the benefits of having an effective study environment, but also acknowledges the change of the entire campus schedule for the final week.

“Simply seeing my final and each of their times on paper makes me less fearful of the week up ahead,” Rueda said.

Matthew Islas, a tutor at the tutorial center said students should plan ahead. “You actually have to make an appointment to study,” he said. “Go to sleep early, wake up early and make sure to pack and eat snacks.”

“It’s all a mind game, think positive. That’s the biggest thing in preparing for any exam,” Islas said.

Others say that although it may seem late, it is not impossible to still ace your exams. There are many

Hailey Brown, a nursing student at FCC, finds the application of flashcards useful and efficient.

Students should be aware that as they prepare for their finals, their instructors are preparing too. Note instructors’ office hours and relay any questions you may have about the course material to them. These professors know what it is to be a student and can benefit students with critical knowledge that can help them succeed.

“I encourage my students to make study schedules and to stick to them,” said Rebecca Slaton, psychology professor.

“In order to help students, I help

them clarify any obstacles that are restraining them from studying,” Slaton said. “We then try to find solutions to these issues.”

The college, its faculty and the ASG are committed to helping students succeed and urge students to utilize the time they have effectively.

“Dont wait until last minute, the tutorial center is open to help,” Sierra said.

Along with free food and a quiet place to study, the ASG will provide students with scantrons and other supplies needed for their exams.

STUDENT VETERANS CARRY INVISIBLE BAGGAGE OF WARS WITHOUT END

Mark Sherfy, 26, comes from a place most would never dream of -- the U.S. Marine Corps. Orders are strictly followed here, no questions, no arguments.

“If whatever we were working on needed extra hours, then we provided them, no questions asked,” Sherfy said.

Most days, he was up by 5:30 a.m., never knowing what the day would hold or when it would end.

“You didn’t have a certain time in which you would be done with work,” Sherfy said.

The military life is starkly different from the life he would come home to, an absolutely black and white, from a place where one is told what to do, when to do it and how to do it, to civilian life as a student at Fresno City College, where he is expected to make his own choices about what to do, eat, wear each day or to not make choices at all.

Like thousands of U.S. veterans transitioning back to civilian life, Sherfy faced an excruciatingly difficult process. This is the adjustment that many veterans must deal with when returning to college or starting college for the first time. Already dealing with severe mental and physical issues, veterans face even greater adversity on campus due to many factors, but particularly the lingering nightmares of their experience in the armed forces.

“It’s a big adjustment for them,” says Mary Alfieri, International Students and Veteran Services Center Coordinator. Alfieri says that the type of discipline that veterans are used to is not present in the college classroom which creates difficulties for them.

“You come back and it’s different,” Sherfy said. “It’s not what you know” or are used to.

Even though student veterans may be able to merge and blend in with the rest of the student population at FCC,

their past experiences are still with them, and they bring it into the classroom, Alfieri said.

“The environment for the veteran on the campus is different; it is an adjustment that they have to make,” Alfieri said. Many veterans experience residuals from noises, bombings and thus, their natural defense is at a peak.

While other students may feel comfortable texting, interrupting or disrespecting the instructor during class, a student veteran may feel uneasy in that situation because he is trained to show full respect and follow complete orders, Alfieri said.

“They come to a school environment which is structured to a point, but the discipline that they are used to from the armed forces is not there in the classroom,” says Alfieri.

She says it may be difficult for the average student to realize they are causing any harm or discomfort to a student veteran.

An estimated 492 student veterans take advantage of programs designed to assist veterans in an academic environment at FCC. According to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, of the roughly 1.8 million veterans residing in the state, about 44,000 utilized a community college education in 2013, not including the 8,000 to 10,000 active duty personnel who annually enroll at community colleges.

The California Community College Chancellor’s Office reports that a college education has become an absolute necessity for veterans returning to civilian life, and community colleges provide most of that education since most veterans are ineligible for direct admission into the California State University or University of California systems.

The Veterans Service Center at FCC invests a lot of resources to ensure that student veterans feel comfortable in the college environment and that they do well in their classes. One of the first things new student veterans must do is complete educational plans, a blueprint to achieve their educational goals -- something that is now

a state-mandated priority for college students.

With patience and perseverance, student veterans at FCC, like other students, strive for success even with a few extra obstacles to deal with.

At the International Students and Veterans Services Center at FCC, those assisting with veteran issues are actual veterans who know the circumstances.

They tend to the front desk and are the first help that veterans needing help are likely to encounter. Alfieri said there isn’t anyone else as qualified as them.

“They’ve been on the other side of the counter, so they know the needs, and they can anticipate the questions that students will have,” Alfieri said.

Student veterans are encouraged to walk into the bottom floor of the Student Services building and make their way into the international students and veterans center for advice and information -- anything from financial aid, tutorial center hours and services as well as admission issues.

Such services were valuable for Mario Reposo, the student veteran counselor at FCC, who was a student veteran a few years ago.

Reposo said that when he was attending San Diego State University, he struggled to retain much of the information he got in his classes in order to be successful.

He suffered injured shoulders, broken bones and back problems, leading to a life of struggle and difficulties.

The experiences and constant tasks took a toll on him and caused setbacks in his education.

“I was struggling, and that was not something seen by the naked eye,” Reposo said.

He persevered and became a counselor for student veterans at FCC. Whether student veterans are actively seeking help and using it to their advantage, one thing is for sure -- the success rate for student veterans at FCC has gradually increased.

Brian Olowude, coordinator of psychological services at FCC said, “They [student veterans] have a higher percentage of success.”

However, while veteran students’ success rates have increased, it does not leave behind the day-to-day issues. Olowude said that far too often, student veterans are quietly battling some form of syndrome or trauma.

“They first have to admit that it’s an issue,” says Olowude. As long as a veteran is able to admit that they are battling a form of syndrome or trauma, help and resources will always be at their disposal.

Olowude said that a common syndrome is the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, better known as PTSD “PTSD is a very treatable disorder,” Olowude said. “If it’s recognized early enough and the person seeks help, there can be improvement of getting over that stigma of asking for help.”

That stigma of “asking for help” according to Olowude is what prevents many veterans from seeking the much needed care.

At FCC, the fear of seeking help will be a thing of the past, as a resource center designed to meet the needs and assist student veterans on campus is set to open in January of 2015.

“It will be a place for veterans to gather and receive all their services in one place,” Olowude says.

So how can the average student help? Olowude suggests students seek friendships with veterans.

He says students should be welcoming to student veterans on campus and also “look at their behaviors in classrooms and try to make it as professional and academic as possible.”

Olowude said, “They have very interesting stories and experiences to share.”

Author Maxine Hong Kingston Talks about her writing and activism

Renowned author, educator, anti-war activist and journalist, Maxine Hong Kingston presented her work before a packed auditorium at Fresno City College.

The author of “The Woman Warrior” and “Chinamen” spoke about her writing and shared stories from her past.

“It’s just very natural to put everything that I feel and observe [and] communicate it to other people,” Kingston said about how she began writing about her past experiences.

Since writing and publishing “The Woman Warrior” back in 1976, Kingston says that now she knows she

could’ve written a larger body of words that could have become successful and sold all over the world.

Kingston says that holding an event like this can inspire future writers to begin writing their own stories.

Will Nestor, a student at FCC, said that he attended the event after reading a small portion from one of Kingston’s books which inspired him.

Kingston’s work in process, “The Fourth Book of Peace” was lost in the Berkeley Oakland Hills Fire in 1991. After losing the drafts of her book, she began rewriting it. Instead of writing it for herself, however, she got a group of writers to write with her. She immediately thought of veterans

who fought to help her write her book.

Kingston said that losing her drafts for “The Fifth Book Of Peace” gave her a new chance to make the writing better.

She explained that the book is about “How to make peace, and how do you create it in yourself, and how do you create it in a work of art, and how can you create it in other people, how can you create in the work world and even when making enemies.” That is the message that she wanted people to keep in mind as they read the book.

Kingston said she is in the process of writing a new book and plans to talk more about it in the near future.

Bookstore Offers Textbook Buyback

Campus Briefs Female Student Posts Flier Featuring Her Attacker

The end of the fall semester is quickly approaching and the FCC Bookstore is looking to buy back your used books.

According to Judi Fischer, a sales clerk at the bookstore, students who bought new or used books can return their books for half of what a normal used book costs.

Fischer said, however, that not all books are guaranteed to be bought back as buybacks depend on supply and demand from Nebraska Books, the wholesale company buying back the books.

Students who wish to sell their used books can take them to the window located in the patio behind the bookstore.

Book buyback begins on Dec. 8 and runs through Dec. 12.

A female student, whose name is unknown, took matters into her own hands after the man jailed for assaulting her was bailed out of jail.

The incident took place on Nov. 18 on the Fresno City College campus.

She posted fliers across the FCC campus showing the face of Joe Arax, 24, the man responsible for that attack and who police say has been bailed out of jail.

Associated Student Government Senator, Juan Miramonte says he spoke with the female victim after she made her way into the ASG office, but she did not give her name.

“Basically he was stalking her on campus, and he didn’t even attend school here,” Miramonte said.

Miramonte said the female student told about her ordeal with Arax and how she believes it began.

“One day she walked out of class and he was there waiting for her,” says Miramonte. “He came out and attacked her.”

tim told him Arax began to punch her and gave her a bruised eye.

According to Miramonte, the female victim had previously dated Arax but at the time of the incident, the victim’s current boyfriend stepped in.

State Center Community College District Police, upon being shown the flier, confirmed that the man whose face was shown was the same person who was responsible for the attack.

“He’s a suspect basically for battery,” said Rodney Zumkehr, officer with SCCCD police.

Officer Zumkehr says Arax struck more than one person during the attack and the complaint was made to the police after.

Zumkehr says when dealing with a domestic violence complaint, it is considered confidential and a flier isn’t normally published. However, the female victim chose to publish the fliers herself and had the right to.

“We are involved in the case,” Zumkehr said. “If there is any violation of any restraining orders or an further action, he would obviously be taken under custody.” l TWITTER.COM/CRES_GUEZ

Soto’s “In and Out of Shadows” Shows Complexities of Immigration Issue

Award winning author, Gary Soto, is presenting his second play at Fresno City College, where he was once a student, on Saturday and Sunday.

The play, “In and Out of Shadows” is a musical about the lives and experiences of a group of undocumented teenagers from Richmond and Pinole, California. It was originally produced in San Francisco at the Brava Theatre, and the cast is drawn from the San Francisco Youth Theatre’s professional ensemble.

When asked about his writing process for the play he talked about the difference in telling the stories of the characters. “I asked myself, ‘How can I tell these stories? Because it isn’t just one story; there are many stories. Not simply Mexican stories, or El Salvadorians or from Guatemala but there are people from Indonesia, China, Korea. The whole gamut appear here, not at their will, but at the will of their parents.’”

The underlying theme in the play is the fear of deportation. The families depicted in the show are of mixed citizenship - undocumented parents and their children who are born in America and have citizenship. It is that which creates the constant anxiety of having the family separated and torn apart.

Soto said that the material for the play came from oral history gathered from the Bay Area by members of the youth theatre’s ensemble. Soto based the play on these real life experiences, which he transforms into his first lively musical theater production, with a completely original and high-spirited musical score.

Soto wishes to present a truly exciting time to his audience, most of whom have never been to a play.

“I wasn’t going to make [the characters] pitiful. I was going to give them life, and courage, and honor and conviction. One way to have them do that is to sing or dance their stories and from that I felt that there could be a very heartfelt emotion between the

actors and even the theatregoers,” Soto said when asked why he decided to make this show a musical.

The play introduces a slew of characters who are preparing their personal statements for an AB 540 conference at UC Berkeley. The story introduces Juan who, reached the U.S. alone through a sewer at 13 years old. Then there’s Alberto who is six years old when he crosses the U.S. border and refuses to use his cousin’s identity and is dosed with cough syrup before crossing. The audience is led to a freshly” urbanized gangster or “vato loco” teaching street Spanish to an undocumented Chinese friend.

However under AB 540 and President Obama’s two-year deportation deferral for certain undocumented youth (DACA), young people may suddenly be separated from their parents and caretakers.

The timing for “In and Out of Shadows” is perfect.

In its concoction of English, Spanish, Tagalog, Spanglish and other languages, the play uncovers the complexities of this highly charged political issue. l TWITTER.COM/FCCRAMPAGE

As an international student who is California born and England raised, I’ve compiled a possibly illusion shattering list of myths and truths about the British:

First and foremost, Britain, the United Kingdom and England are not the same thing; and it’s technically called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In layman’s terms, the United Kingdom is composed of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Great Britain is majorly England, Scotland and Wales; however, this does exclude many small islands on the outskirts.

Ireland is not a country but contains two different countries; the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Secondly, tea. I’d be lying if I said the rumors weren’t true.

Although not everyone loves tea, it’s by far one of the most truthful stereotypes. It’s practically impossible to find no tea in the average household, it would result

in anarchy! We also don’t always have scones with our tea...but we do have biscuits. There’s nothing like a cup of tea and rich tea biscuits to dunk while indulging in crappy British soaps I’ll never admit to watching. There is also a difference between drinking a cuppa and going to someone’s house for tea; the latter is another way of phrasing that you’re going to someone’s house for dinner. But if there’s tea with tea then I’m not complaining!

The next one is about as bizarre as saying all Americans are friends with Barack Obama.

No, the British are not all friends with the Queen and unfortunately, no, we do not have tea and scones with the Queen... as if she’d approach us peasants!

The biggest “unfortunately” of all, we don’t all live in fancy manors or live in beautiful remote countryside cottages with cobblestone paths that lead to the Queen’s home where we drink tea and scones together.

The Brits dental issues

are trickier to define. If you put it on a scale of Hollywood to Hillbilly, it would justifiably place in the middle. It’s not as much of an issue as it was 20 odd years ago, but not entirely untrue.

London is not the only place in England! Although London is huge, England’s size is always underestimated. It’s one of many amazing places, but is, undoubtedly, the biggest tourist area, packed full of sightseeing destinations, markets, museums, galleries, concert venues, restaurants and malls. Also, Londoners, or even the English in general, do not all speak Cockney slang, it’s not that common to hear it being spoken.

The British are always pinned as introverted, rude and dry-humored, which in general would also not be entirely untrue... to the average American. It’s harder to appreciate a stereotypical British personality if you haven’t spent much time around it to understand it fully. It’s more that they aren’t as outspoken or outgoing in the same

way that Americans stereotypically are. As for humor, not everyone has that Monty Python flare, but again, it’s another thing that is harder to appreciate when you don’t fully understand it.

Lastly, for some reason Britain is notorious for terrible food! I can agree to an extent, but it does depend on where you eat. Most places have pretty great Indian food, a few good Italian restaurants, and a handful of awesome fish and chip shops that are most likely among the many local chippies (yes, a real term for “fish and chip shop”) scattered across the town. Plus, nothing beats a good fry-up (or full English breakfast, if you please) in your local cafe to nurse the aftermath of a night out. I also yearn for Mexican food and it’s disappointing that it’s incredibly hard to find Mexican food in England.

Vacation tip: don’t try the Mexican, you’ll be severely disappointed.

Potlocks may be the easiest way to throw a quick party, but thinking of something appropriate to bring can get a little tough.

Holiday parties are the supposed to be the time and place to have fun and relax, not a time to spend extra time and money trying to make an extravagant dish to bring to your office’s holiday party. Luckily, there are many recipes for those who like to get a little crafty and are on a budget.

Decorative pretzels are an easy and fun way to go when you are short on time but still want to bring something that everyone will surely love.

The materials you will need are a bag of pretzel rods, chocolate, any kind of toppings like crushed nuts, candies, or coconut flakes and a baking sheet lined with wax paper.

The first step is melting the chocolate according to the directions on the package. Once the chocolate is melted dip a pretzel rod

into the chocolate until it is covered half way. Allow any of the excess chocolate to drip off before sprinkling your toppings onto the chocolate covered pretzel. Once the pretzel is fully covered place it onto the baking sheet and allow the chocolate coating to harden, and just like that you are done.

This recipe is not only extremely easy to make but there is also room for you to use your imagination. You could use any kind of chocolate and even butterscotch and caramel morsels to coat your pretzels. Different kinds of cookies could be used as toppings and you could even get creative by finishing off the pretzel with an extra drizzle of chocolate.

Making these pretzels may get a little messy but it will only remind you that the holidays are all about having fun.

LIVING WITH DYSPHORIA

A personal approach to navigating triggers, upsets and everyday life

The life of an optimistic mind and an incomplete body of a transgender person isn’t easy living with the dysphoria and triggers that surrounds the shell around them.

Some transgendered people deal with the struggle referred to as “dysphoria.” When someone is dysphoric, they do not feel comfortable in the body they are currently living in, so that is why some opt to undergo surgeries and hormone replacement therapy.

For a transgender person, there are so many different emotions they will likely endure because of repressed masculinity or femininity. There are triggers and aspects that linger around in society that can continuously tear one down.

As someone who is transgender, I battle daily with the struggle of presenting themselves more masculine or more feminine in order to pass as that assumed gender role. “Passing” means when you successfully show the public and your-

self that your mind and appearance match up even if your body does not.

Triggers can be set off by events or emotions that have happened in the past, which can lead to self-repression. Unfortunately, triggering things occur very sporadically throughout our lives and one does not always have control over them.

A trigger can occur in any emotional situation. It also occurs quite often in trauma victims who suffered from rape, molestation, gone to war, or suffered from bullying or suicide attempts.

It is good when possible to avoid triggering someone. When you trigger someone it can stir up a bunch of different of emotions or flashbacks that you may have not even intended.

If you are talking to someone on a personal level and cross lines that someone isn’t ready for, they could become triggered. If you trigger someone, let them know that you’re apologetic. It is good to know if someone has experienced any triggers, so that

your mental sanity as well as others.

When a person who is transgender is misgendered with their pronouns, it can potentially trigger them because it will make them feel as if they don’t pass as their gender identity. Personally, I have been misgendered and it has made me feel that in that moment I do not “pass” as who I truly am. It did hurt me mentally and emotionally, but I learned that people make mistakes and that it is okay to correct them and let them know that they are forgiven. It is okay to make mistakes!

Be safe and mindful of yourself. If you can help others, most certainly try and do it. Everyone goes through ups and downs. Know your triggers and if possible, know other people’s triggers and try to avoid them. Encourage yourself and know that it will get better. Love yourself and reach out for help if you need it.

Taken Alive: Where Are the Missing 43?

Recently, Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto announced a 10 point plan to reform local police departments, abolish municipal governments and establish a national citizen database.

The hope is that in doing away with the local governments the ties with gangs will be severed but as more bodies are discovered light is shed on the violence of the Mexican cartels and possible links to various government sects.

Nieto has acknowledged citizen’s anger towards corruption and promised change; however, the fate Missing 43 has yet to be confirmed.

The reform proposals are nothing more than a hollow attempt to stifle the people’s outrage and again sweep the lives of the missing students under the rug. The government’s inability or refusal to produce the students increases suspicion in regards to their level of involvement in the disappearances.

Mexico has had a long difficult history with gang violence and political corruption and for

you can avoid them in anyway possible.

A transgender person could have emotional triggers of not being “passing enough” and it can continuously affect them until they feel complete with their transition. For example, a transgendered individual could be potentially triggered when they walk into the bathroom and are stared down because they don’t “pass”.

No one wants to be judged on the way they present themselves, or for simply being themselves. Try and be understanding. These triggers will cease, just try to avoid them as much as you can.

It is good to know what your own personal boundaries are so you know when you could potentially become overwhelmed. If you feel overwhelmed or distressed by the person who suffers a mental disorder or even has triggers, make sure they know how you’re feeling in the moment. It isn’t rude, it’s protecting your mental insanity from deteriorating. It is important to ensure

the first time people are railing against these atrocities. The missing 43 represent more than this single atrocity--they are every violent act that went ignored.

They are the face of countless faceless victim of thousands of other crimes against humanity.

As the search for identifiable remains of the 43 continues a haunting number of mass gravesites have been uncovered.

As of Sunday, a van containing 5 decapitated burned corpse and, as of Thursday, 11 identically mutilated bodies in the same region of Chilapa--all remain unidentified. These are only the most recent discoveries believed to be linked to the Beltran cartel and corrupt local governments.

Nieto promise reform, but of what? A reformation of the same corrupt governmental formation.

Shifting titles and officials around will do no justice to those who continue to suffer from confusion and misinformation from officials.

Bill Cosby has entertained American families for many generations with shows ranging from the Cosby Show to the Cosby Mysteries.

America’s relationship with Mr. Cosby can be described as intimate, although it was through a television screen. He was America’s Dad, the father that many young girls and boys did not have at home.

Many people have locked their hearts on Cosby’s “wisdom” and have quoted him widely. So many writers have used Bill Cosby as a reference and the characters he played have been placed on a similar pedestal.

Now, numerous allegations of sexual assault against Cosby leave us all perplexed. What are we supposed to do? Begin to question all we’ve believed about him or associated with his name? Erase all good things that have ever been said about him?

The accusations against Mr. Cosby have come so rapidly that it is hard

to digest. Bill and Camille Cosby, married since 1964, have shared their own lessons and made us laugh. Their family has shown us that not everyone is the same, but that does not mean you cannot be friends. Cosby has been involved in so much -- acting, stand up acts, media content production and activism for various civil rights movements.

The American society associates the Cosby with such integrity that we are all in shock to learn that the man we have all trusted so much be accused of rape by multiple women. The most haunting is that the accusers have stated that Mr. Cosby drugged them in order to have sexual relations with them. The media have sensationalized the story without providing answers we all desperately need.

Bill Cosby had a gift which he shared with the world exceptionally well.

Fun stuff aside, Rampage personnel are expected to maintain a certain level of professionalism and work ethic. Writing for the newspaper is often compared to having a job as the workload can easily encumber those who have issues with time management.

The Rampage prints every two weeks, so you will be expected to produce at the very least one article per issue. That sounds simple enough but this is a student run newspaper. Students create the

Rianna Chavez: New Single Season goals scored record holder

SPORTS BETTING, SHOULD IT BE LEGAL?

Sports betting is a very controversial topic in our society. In the United States, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1994 makes it illegal to operate a “betting, gambling or wagering scheme”, except for in the states of Delaware, Nevada, and Oregon.

Enthusiasts of legalized sports betting generally regard it as a hobby for sports fans with the potential to increase their interest in particular sporting events. This would in turn, benefit the leagues, teams and players, bringing them higher game attendances and television audiences. On the other hand, opponents fear that the over and above ramifications of gambling may threaten the integrity of amateur and professional sports and its history.

In an article by the New York Times, it is said that three commissioners of major professional sports leagues spoke out against sports betting. They argue that, “The legalization of team sports betting by any state or municipality would increase the chances that persons gambling on games will attempt to influence the outcome of those games,” former Major League Baseball commissioner Fay Vincent told the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee

on Patents, Copyrights and Trademarks. “High rollers have high incentive to induce players to fix games or to shave runs or points.”

Ben Davidson, the former Oakland Raider defensive end, testified against the measures. “The issue is not whether gambling will exist, but who will control it,” Davidson said.

“I would much rather see this activity in the hands of state officials who will carefully regulate it than in the hands of organized crime, Benny the Bookmaker or even Joe Smith at the water cooler.” The argument against sports betting is that it will question the integrity of players, coaches, teams, referees, and the whole league.

If sports betting is made legal, it will remove the negative aspect of gambling on sports. Fans and spectators will be able to interact with the games more and will make athletes more competitive. Supporters say that sports betting will add excitement. It’ll make a regular person feel as if they’re part of the team. Not only will the individual athletes of the game suffer when they lose, the person who bet for them will suffer as well.

In the Journal of Gambling Studies, supporters for sports betting argue that:“The most significant public policy issue associated with sports betting is legalization. Supporters of legalization rest the bulk of their case on the economic benefits the state can experience. They also assert that legalization will have a major negative impact on the extent of illegal gambling. Those who are against further legalization, particularly amateur and professional sports leagues, the horse race industry, and legal bookmakers, point out that sports wagering is not very profitable and is very risky for the operator. Furthermore, legal wagering will be unable to compete effectively with the price of illegal operations.”

Sophomore forward Rianna Chavez has scored 24 goals, the fifth highest in the state this season. She has also broken Jesslyn Fagundes’ (2009) single season record for number of goals scored in a single season.

Chavez has scored two goals or more in four games this season, four goals or more in two games this year. She had a five goal game against West Valley.

“It feels pretty good. I knew I had the ability to break it I just had to believe in myself. But I also have to give credit to my teammates,”said Rianna Chavez“Because without their support on the field and finding me on my runs I wouldn’t have half the goals I have now.”

What those against the legalization of sports betting are trying to say, is that sports betting will question the integrity of the sports world. In other words, who’s to say that athletes won’t choose to “shave” points or not perform to their maximum potential just to help someone they know to make money? Or maybe they owe someone a big favor. On the other hand, those supporting sports betting also make a good point when they state that athletes will become more competitive. FCC Fall Teams Dominate Again

Fresno City College Athletics finished up another excellent semester dominated the Central Valley Conference Women’s soccer won conference crown for the seventh consecutive time. They finished the season undefeated. Women’s Volleyball went 14-0 and extended their conference winning streak to 48 games. Women’s Soccer finish the season undefeated Fresno City College women’s soccer team is undefeated with a record of 22-0-2 and has advanced to the State Final Four which will be held Dec. 5-7 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Along with an undefeated record, the team has won 15 consecutive games since their tie against Pierce College on Sept. 26.

The Rams have broken a few team records throughout this season -- most goals scored in a season at 98, fewest goals allowed at 7, and shutouts at 19.

“We just emphasized the players jobs and them staying focus, and to just worry about what we can control on the field this season,” said Head Coach Oliver Germond.

“Coach has been pushing us really hard, and he’s been telling us to give 100 percent,” said sophomore

Rams Volleyball falls short versus American River College The Fresno City College Rams volleyball team fell short in their playoff run after a loss to American River College 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 26-24 on Nov. 30, at Sacremento.

FCC finished the season with a 22-6 record, 14-0 in the Central Valley Conference. They won their seventh conference title in the row. They’ve won 48 conference games in a row. They also finished ranked No.14 in the state. Sophomore middle blocker Katie Lowe lead the Rams this season with 228 kills. “We know what we can get out of Katie and it shows statistically,” said Head Coach Tracy Ainger-Schultz.

Freshman middle blocker Malerie Crenshaw was a revelation for the Rams this season, a raw talent still learning to play the game had 221 kills on the season.

Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Jones had 205 kills on the year. “I’ve been playing for two years and I like playing all over the court, staying positive and giving it all I got,” said Jones

Defensively freshman linebacker, Francis Mitchell lead the team in tackles with 43.

Sophomore Defensive Lineman Wyatt McBe e and Reno Sagapolu led the Rams with 7 and 6.5 sacks respectively. Freshman safety Tajhe Moore and sophomore defensive back Arnold Lopez tied for the most interceptions on the team with a total of 3.

FCC finished the season with an overall record of 7-4, and ended the season ranked 11 in the state.

“This victory means a lot to these kids,” Caviglia said. “We had an up and down year; we kept working and trying, and I’m really happy and proud of these players.”

FCC Mens soccer make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs, lose to rival Taft

After winning a nail- biter against Evergreen Valley, 4-2 in penalty kicks at Ratcliffe Stadium, on Tuesday Nov. 25.

After being down 0-2 at half, the rams switched a few things around and tried to change the tide.

The first goal for the rams came in the 66th minute by Forward Jorge Rodriguez.

Then Defender Charleston Chao tied the game in stoppage time with a goal, to send it into Overtime.

“I saw the ball and I put myself in the best position,” said Chao With the win, the Rams advanced to the third round of the CCCAA Mens Soccer NorCal Regional playoffs where they faced Taft.

The Rams lost a heartbreaker to rival Taft after leading 1-0 at halftime, Taft scored two goals in the second half to take the third round playoff win from the rams.

FCC Water Polo falls one game short of playoff The Rams finished the season 12-10 with a 6-4 record in the Big 8 conference.

Having high expectations this year, they fell a one game short.

Sophomores Sydney Luna and Charlee Starkweather earned Honorable Mention for all-conference selection in the Big 8 Conference.

Goalie Kaylin Drum was named an All-American and made the Big 8 All-Tournament Team and First Team All-Conference.

Fresno City College women’s soccer team is having the season for the ages, and with a current undefeated record of 22-0-2, the team has advanced to the State Final Four which will be held at Mt. San Antonio College on Dec. 5-7.

“It seems like every time we are faced with a different challenge, this team finds a way to come out on top,” said sophomore midfielder, Vanessa Penuna who scored 2 goals in the Rams 3-0 victory against Sierra College on November 29.

“I feel excited to have a chance to be in the final four because anything can happen when you get there.”

“It never surprises me, the things that we are capable of doing, so going to this final four and meeting up with the best of the best, I know we will put a fight and ultimately try our very best to come out on top, proving why we are #1 in state,” said Penuna.

Germond said that reaching the final four will create opportunities for the players. “It’s a very special event and will help them get seen by many four-year schools,” he said.

“This is all about them not me. I just try and guide them in the right path.

Sophmores Rianna Chavez, Jannely Rangel, Maricruz Chapa, and Vanessa Penuna all scored in the double digits this season, scoring 64 of the Rams 98 goals.

Freshman, Mel Harris, scored 11 goals in a great first season with the Rams.

FCC will have its toughest test of the season on Dec. 5 when they play defending state champions Cerritos College. Cerritos has a 16-0 winning streak and has scored a total of 133 goals, the most goals scored in the state and are ranked No. 2 after FCC. l TWITTER.COM/SLOCUM13
