A PEAK AT THE PARSHA Parshat Vayeilech is one of the shortest parshiyot in the Torah, but it has a very important message. It takes place at the end of Moshe Rabbeinu’s life. He is 120 years old and knows that soon he will pass away. Moshe tells Bnei Yisrael that he will not be the one to lead them into Eretz Yisrael. Instead, Yehoshua will be their new leader.

Then, Moshe writes down the entire Sefer Torah and gives it to the kohanim and the levi’im. He commands them to read it out loud to all the people every seven years, during the special time called Hakhel. This happens in the Beit HaMikdash during the holiday of Sukkot, when all the men, women, and children come to hear the Torah. It helps remind everyone to love and follow Hashem.

ONE BIG IDEA

Even though Moshe is very old, he continues teaching, guiding, and caring for Bnei Yisrael until the very end. He shows us that serving Hashem never stops, no matter how old we are.

In Parshat Vayeilech, Moshe tells Yehoshua to be strong and brave: “Chazak ve’ematz!” because he will lead Bnei Yisrael in to Eretz Yisrael. Yehoshua might have felt nervous, but Moshe reminds him that Hashem is always with him. Sometimes, we also feel nervous: like before a test, a new class, or trying something hard. But just like Yehoshua, we can remember that Hashem is by our side, helping us be strong and do our best. When we believe in Hashem and ourselves, we can face any challenge with courage!

Parshat Vayeilech teaches us that we should always trust in Hashem, be brave, and learn Torah. Even when leaders change, Hashem is always with us!
