ASB CAREER PATHWAYS PROGRAM CONTINUES TO REAP SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES Since its inception in spring 2013, the ASB Career Pathways Program has helped business majors develop a rich understanding of the career development process through hands-on activities and direct interaction with advisors in the ASB/Cahill Career Development Center. The Program, designed to help students secure internships while in school and full-time employment upon graduation, has met with outstanding success. Sixty-nine percent of graduating seniors in 2015 participated in one or more co-ops and/or internships compared with 55 percent in 2012. Professional full-time employment upon graduation also has increased, with 71 percent of graduating seniors securing professional employment before graduation, the highest level in the past five years.

Effective fall 2015, completion of the Career Pathways Program will be a graduation requirement for every business major to ensure that all ASB graduates “hit the ground running” as they launch their careers.

“The inclusion of the Career Pathways Program into the curriculum of the Anisfield School of Business signals Ramapo’s commitment to our students’ academic success as well as the College’s approach to engaging students in meaningful experiences that foster a continuum of personal and professional learning,” said Peter P. Mercer, President of Ramapo College.

The program is delivered in three sequential modules.

Career Assessment/Advising helps students identify specific career opportunities which match their skills, interests and personality traits.

Resume Plus guides students in their development of an effective professional resume, a robust LinkedIn profile and cover letters tailored to specific job openings.

Interview Practice prepares students through mock interviews to speak about their goals, education, skills, work interests and values with industry professionals.

The true testament of Career Pathways’ success has been the growing interest in our students from the employment community. Participation by employers in our campus job fairs surged by 24 percent this year with very prestigious firms hiring our students including: Cipolla & Co, LLC; Columbia Bank; Deloitte & Touche; Ernst & Young; Fidelity Investments; Friedman LLP; Jaguar Land Rover; KPMG; Merrill Lynch; Northwestern Mutual, Stryker, Terrie O’Connor Realtors; Travelers Insurance; WithumSmith+Brown.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN As we welcome our AACSB team of peer deans back for our Continuous Improvement Review this fall 2015, we are proud to share that the quality of the Anisfield School of Business has never been higher. Our programs, including seven undergraduate majors and concentrations and our Accelerated MBA for Working Professionals, are all thriving with robust enrollments.

ASB continues to explore and develop new initiatives to further improve the quality of the educational experience we provide. We look to grow our offerings to a broader student population who will benefit from the expertise and teaching skills we have to offer. We place significant emphasis on career coaching and professional skill development initiatives to ensure that our graduating students are fully prepared to successfully compete for the best jobs in the marketplace. Effective fall 2015, completion of the Career Pathways program will be required of all of our graduates.

RAMAPO COLLEGE ENACTUS ENTREPRENEURIAL • ACTION • US

Enactus is an international student organization that allows students to apply their business knowledge and skills to help others in the local and global community. Students assist groups in need, sharing their entrepreneurial spirit coupled with their boundless energy and enthusiasm for giving back.

The goal of every Ramapo College Enactus project is to teach skills so the recipients are empowered to move forward on their own – the desired outcome is a self-sustaining enterprise. Projects have included teaching adults financial literacy and employment skills in Paterson, New Jersey, assisting Central American artisans in selling their wares, and driving sustainable behaviors on our own campus and preserving the Ramapo Nature Reservation on the College’s doorstep. One team of Ramapo Enactus students attended the Fall 2015 Leadership Conference hosted by Bryant University and Liberty Mutual and another competed and were Opening Round Finalists in the United States National Enactus Exposition in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2014.

MORE THAN 150 ATTEND

CYBER SECURITY CONFERENCE

Ramapo College of New Jersey, in collaboration with America’s Small Business Development Centers New Jersey, hosted a Cyber Security Conference on August 13.

More than 150 participants representing area businesses attended the event. Vince Vicari, Regional Director of New Jersey Small Business Development Centers (NJSBDC), served as moderator.

Among the topics discussed were how small and medium businesses can adopt and adapt appropriate approaches to cybersecurity, and how to use tools and techniques to thwart cyberattacks without constraining business innovation and growth.

Ramapo College is the location for an affiliate office of the NJSBDC, which provides assistance to small business owners and entrepreneurs in New Jersey.

ASB WELCOMES NEW FACULTY Malavika Sundararajan, assistant professor of management, earned her Ph.D. in organizational behavior and entrepreneurship and M.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, her M.A. from University of Madras, Chennai, India, and her B.Sc. from Avinashilingam Deemed University, Coimbatore, India. Professor Sundararajan currently teaches Managing Organizational Behavior and Ethics in Business. Her research interests include emotions, ethics, cognitive models, corporate social responsibility and entrepreneurial thinking.

ASB WELCOMES DR. CHARLES STEINDEL,

A “SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE” Charles Steindel is Resident Scholar in the Anisfield School of Business. He was formerly Chief Economist at the New Jersey Department of the Treasury, with responsibility for economic and revenue projections and analysis of state economic policy. He came to the Treasury after a long career at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where he played a leading role in forecasting and policy advice and attended Federal Open Market Committee meetings. He has served in leading roles in a number of professional organizations. In 2011, he received the William F. Butler Award from the New York Association for Business Economics. He is a member of the panel for the Survey of Professional Forecasters and the Committee on Research in Income and Wealth, and has published in fields across a range of areas. He received his bachelor’s degree from Emory University and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Roberto “Bobby” Saldivar, assistant professor of marketing, earned his Ph.D. in business administration with a major in marketing and an M.B.A. from University of Texas-Pan American, and his B.B.A from the University of Texas at Brownsville. Professor Saldivar teaches Marketing Principles and Practice, Sales Management, Consumer Behavior, and will develop a class on Corporates Social Responsibility. His research interests include investigating consumer reactions to corporate social responsibility and investigating immigrant consumer experiences in the market.

Changhee Lee, assistant professor of accounting, earned her Ph.D. in accounting from Rutgers University, her M.S. from Michigan State University, her M.B.A. from Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea, and her B.E. and B.S. from Duksung Women’s University, Seoul, South Korea.

Professor Lee currently teaches Principles of Financial Accounting and Principles of Managerial Accounting. Her research interests include financial analyst forecast and recommendation, market inefficiency and corporate social responsibility.

TRANSITIONS: PROFESSOR ANTHONY LA MANNA RETIRES AFTER 43 YEARS Anthony V. La Manna, Esq., professor of business administration and law, joined Ramapo College in 1972. Prior to that, he was an administrator with National Community Bank and associate systems engineer for IBM. Professor La Manna was the first director of the School of Administration and Finance (as it was then known). He has taught more than 20 courses for the school including courses in accounting, marketing and finance. His main area of expertise, however, is in business law. He is an attorney in New Jersey and an arbitrator and mediator with the American Arbitration Association, and an arbitrator with the Financial Industry Regulatory Association (FINRA).

Professor La Manna says what he enjoyed most about his career at Ramapo College was “teaching...the students are great, my colleagues, co-workers and associates are wonderful...I've made literally hundreds of friends over the 43 years. I have been truly blessed in my career.” The faculty, staff and students of the Anisfield School of Business wish him all the best in his retirement.
