It is with great excitement and pride that I introduce the first issue of our relaunched print magazine, Drishat Shalom. The pages that follow reflect the vibrant, growing, and deeply connected community that defines Ramah Darom today. As we celebrate our 30th year, this feels like the perfect moment to capture where we are today and share our plans for the future.
As Board Chair, I have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the extraordinary breadth and depth of Ramah Darom’s impact. From our summer campers experiencing transformative Jewish living, to retreat participants finding renewal and meaning, to alumni and long-standing supporters who continue to shape our legacy, this community is as diverse as it is committed. Each of you plays a vital role in sustaining and strengthening us.
In February, the Board came together for our semi-annual Shabbaton on our Clayton campus, a gathering that left me feeling energized about Ramah Darom's future. The weekend showcased the very best of Ramah Darom: 120 teenagers together to celebrate Shabbat at the Delet Darom Teen Retreat, 76 members of small Jewish communities participating in our Southern Schmooze Shabbaton, and our Board engaged in thoughtful discussion on the strategic direction of Ramah Darom for the next 3-5 years. It was truly a remarkable moment of community!
Our Board is passionate about ensuring Ramah Darom remains a place of belonging, inspiration, and Jewish connection for all who enter its gates. The diversity of perspectives and expertise among us strengthens how we lead, with both vision and care. I continue to be inspired by the thoughtfulness this group brings to its work, and I’m confident we can steward the organization responsibly while also investing boldly in what’s ahead.
This magazine is one more way we hope to stay in touch with you. I invite you to flip through the pages and read the stories, celebrate our milestones, and be part of the ongoing journey of Ramah Darom. As we mark 30 years of impact, I am grateful for your partnership and look forward to all that we will build together in the years ahead.
Stacey Schefflin Slomka Board Chair, Ramah Darom
In the summer of 2001, my wife Sarah (Attermann) arrived at Ramah Darom for the very first time as a camper. Like so many who pass through our gates, she came for a summer experience, but what she left with was something much deeper: a connection to Jewish life, a sense of purpose, and a community that would stay with her long after the summer ended.
Today, more than two decades later, I have the profound privilege of serving as CEO of Ramah Darom and even more meaningfully, of watching our two young boys run freely across the very same campus that helped shape her story. For our family, Ramah Darom is not just where I work or where we eat delicious food or where we celebrate Jewish holidays. It is an integral part of our story, a physical manifestation of our Judaism and our home.
That personal connection is, in many ways, what Ramah Darom is all about. Yes, we are a summer camp. Yes, we are a retreat center. But at our core, we are a community—one that nurtures growth, builds lifelong relationships, and creates meaningful Jewish moments across generations. Whether it is a camper discovering independence through a role in the musical for the first time, a teen deepening their leadership skills by mentoring a younger camper, or an adult connecting with nature and themselves at a retreat, the impact of this place extends far beyond any single program or season.
That is why I am so excited to introduce Drishat Shalom, the Ramah Darom Magazine. This publication is intended to be far more than a collection of updates, but rather a window into the stories, people, and experiences that define Ramah Darom today. Within these pages, you will see the ripple effect of what happens here: the connections formed, the innovation we are pursuing, and the enduring sense of belonging that continues to grow year after year.
As we celebrate 30 years of Ramah Darom, I find myself both grateful for all that has come before and energized by what lies ahead. I believe passionately that our impact on the Jewish future is more important than ever.
Thank you for being part of this story.
Scott Topal CEO, Ramah Darom
Kayitz (Summer) 2026 Preview
By Anna Serviansky, Director, Camp Ramah Darom
As we prepare to open for our 30th summer, with our highest number of campers (some 812) in over 12 years, we reflect on all that makes Camp Ramah Darom the best place to spend a kayitz! Our campers and Camp alumni all share stories of transformational friendships, a sense of belonging, a commitment to the Jewish people, and an attachment to the beautiful nature that is Ramah Darom.
These days, Jewish leaders often talk about the importance of a summer at Jewish camp in
solidifying Jewish identity and creating a connection to Israel. It’s even better when the Jewish camp advocates specifically mention Ramah!
On Jonah Platt’s Being Jewish podcast, his guest, Daniel Lubetsky (of Shark Tank and KIND Snacks), said “Ramah is the solution to everything!” On top of the Jewish and Israel pieces, he mentioned that every kid he meets who went to Ramah has “good values” and is a “good human being!” We could not agree more that there is something special about the Ramah values that endure summer after summer.
If you look at our professional Camp Team, each one of us is an alumna of Camp Ramah Darom. For me, it was five formative summers as a college staff member; for others, it was many summers as
both campers and staff. Those Camp connections continue to nurture our relationship to Jewish community and the physical place that is our Camp. We are excited to be present to make our 30th summer the best yet — with memories and friendships to last.
Kayitz 2026 promises to be incredible. In addition to ruach (spirit) filled shira (singing), Havdallah, Yom Sport (shh, it won’t be cancelled), and all the regular favorites, we have some new things to enjoy. Our lakefront has been updated for tons of kef (fun)! Last summer, we opened the new obstacle course, docks, blob tower, and boats. This summer, our Wet Willie water slides will open, adding lots of action to one of the best spots at Camp!
Israeli rock band Daniel ve Jacobi will perform
concerts that showcase Israeli history through song. We’re bringing back our guest nature educator, reintroducing podcasting in an exciting new format, and making glass mezuzot for our cabins in a new kiln.
We will celebrate our 30th birthday in style each session with opportunities for the entire Camp to participate. There will be cake, activities, and a few special surprises for all to enjoy. We will conclude our 30th summer with Camp Alumni Mishpacha Weekend, welcoming alumni and their families back home to Ramah Darom for a classic Shabbat in 30525.
The Camp Team is excited to all be in our happy place as a strong Jewish community singing and dancing all kayitz long!
ISRAEL CONNECTION
Our Amazing Mishlachat
Each summer and throughout the year, Ramah Darom is proud to welcome our mishlachat—a delegation of staff from Israel who bring culture, perspective, and heart to our kehillah (community). What they share with our campers and staff is powerful. What they take with them is just as meaningful.
Or Moshe shares a message of pride and connection: “Be proud of who you are… Jewish identity is far more than a religion… it is about family, community, culture, and values… a deep sense of connection and responsibility for one another.”
For many, their time at Ramah Darom deepens their understanding of global Jewish life. As Chanan Shoshan reflects, “Working at Camp strengthened my understanding of the connection between Israelis and Jewish communities abroad… and how powerful personal encounters can be.”
Camp is also a place of personal growth and transformation. Talya Danino describes it as “the first place that was truly mine… where I found my own voice and strengths.”
For Michal Moshonov, it was life-changing: “Camp gave me more than a summer experience; it gave me my life partner and the beginning of the family we built together.”
Time and again, our mishlachat describes Ramah Darom as a second home. Aharon Levy calls it “a kind of family that I have outside of Israel,” while Hagar Amgar reflects on the experience as “a pure Jewish mosaic that changed my life for the better.”
Their stories are a powerful reminder that Ramah Darom is more than a place—it’s a global Jewish community built on connection, pride, and belonging.
“ Ramah Darom is not ‘just’ a summer camp. These year-round programs are a community to love and experience all their own— something for every age and every stage. And now, for us, someplace we know we’ll return to again and again.”
Ramah Darom Retreat Center
A year of connections, growth & joyful Jewish community
By Eliana Leader, Director, Ramah Darom Retreat Center
This retreat season reminded us, again and again, why gathering in community matters.
More than 1,600 participants joined us on campus for a season filled with standout moments: Winter Break Family Camp hit record attendance of over 330 participants for the second year running; our Passover Retreat filled our campus with over 400 participants; and nearly 100 alumni returned for a meaningful and joyful Machzor Gimel reunion. At B’teavon, our new Teen Track brought intergenerational cooking to life in exciting new ways. We’re closing the season in true Ramah Darom fashion with LimmudFest over Shavuot, a partnership
with Limmud North America that also brings our summer camp senior leadership into the celebration.
Nearly 2,800 rental guests joined us over the course of the year, including several weekends when multiple retreats ran simultaneously. Behind the scenes, our operations and hospitality teams made it all possible.
Looking ahead, our upcoming retreat season will have something for everybody!

The Camp Ramah Darom Alumni Association (CRDAA) seeks to further enrich the lives of Ramah Darom alumni through social events, educational and religious programming, fundraising initiatives, career resources, and networking opportunities. At its core, CRDAA is dedicated to fostering lifelong connections between alumni, Judaism, and Ramah Darom.
CRDAA is led by a dedicated Committee that works in close partnership to ensure alumni engagement remains a central priority. The Committee meets monthly to guide the vision and strategy of the organization, including the creation and publication of the quarterly newsletter, The Hill Times, which highlights alumni stories, celebrates simchas, and keeps the community connected to Camp.
Together, the Committee collaborates to plan annual in-person gatherings, distribute micro-grants that empower alumni to organize their own programs, and develop creative social media and fundraising initiatives. This partnership model allows for both strategic leadership and grassroots creativity.
As of this year, CRDAA Committee members also serve on committees of the Ramah Darom Inc. Board. This structure creates a meaningful leadership pipeline and ensures that the voices and perspectives of young alumni are represented at the highest levels of Camp leadership.

Alumni Spotlight
We are thrilled to welcome Rebecca (Leibowitz) Wasserstrom, Gesher 2005, to our professional year-round team!
My own Ramah Darom story began at Family Camp in 1999, and like many of you, what started as a single moment went on to make a huge impact on my life. Over the years, Ramah Darom has been a source of friendship, personal growth, and Jewish joy for thousands. My own experience as a camper and counselor in the Blue Ridge Mountains are what led me to this role just a few months ago.
As Chief Development Officer, I focus on strengthening those connections year-round and across every stage of life. Whether you’re a current camper, parent, retreat participant, or someone who hasn’t been back in years, we want Ramah Darom to always feel like home.
There’s a lot ahead—new ways to stay involved, more opportunities to reconnect (including our Mishpacha Alumni Family Weekend this September), and continued efforts to welcome more people into our community.
If Ramah Darom has been a part of your story, I’d love to hear from you!

“ Jewish summer camp was my first love. Watching my family and friends fall in love with it—and claim it as theirs—is something else entirely. I am pinching myself that this place exists. We are so fortunate.”
