Camp Ramah in California | 2022 Annual Report

Our Vision

We dream of a more just world with many generations of proud, educated, and reflective Jews, deeply committed to their communities and the pursuit of vibrant Jewish life.

Our Mission

Camp Ramah in California creates lifelong relationships through joyful, welcoming, and immersive Jewish experiences rooted in Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Hasadim. Ramah is committed to the future of the Jewish community and betterment of the world. Torah – We cultivate a passion for lifelong Jewish learning and a commitment to our heritage and the wisdom of our people. Avodah – We create opportunities for joyful prayer and positive engagement in the richness of our rituals and mitzvot. Gemilut hasadim – We take active responsibility for each other and the world.

To Our Ramah Family At Camp Ramah in California, we see every camper’s progression from Gesher through Machon, Mador, and tzevet (staff) as a journey along what we’ve come to call an “aspirational arc.” Indeed, our ladder of Jewish growth, middah l’edah, affords chanichim (campers) and tzevet alike the opportunity to master a new value each summer as they mature into adolescence and then early adulthood. That aspirational arc continues as they transition into becoming alumni, donors, and eventually parents of the next generation of proud Ramah chanichim (campers) and madrichim (counselors). In other words, “A Journey for a Lifetime” isn’t just a clever tagline beneath our logo. It’s our very reason for being. It is easy to get bogged down by the minutiae of running a summer camp that is also, the other 43 weeks of the year, a bustling retreat center: have we ordered enough kosher chickens for Shabbat? Can we afford to replace the roofs of the bunks? Who is going to teach bishul (cooking) and omanut (art)? Will the chanichim love the new pickleball courts? When do we need to replace the mattresses? Answering these kinds of questions is vital to our daily operations, but at Ramah we also ask bigger, tougher questions: how can we equip Ramahniks with the skills to confront the world’s many challenges with kindness and empathy? How do we make space in our communities for those who are different from ourselves? What

does it mean to be a leader? What does it mean to be Jewish? Asking these kinds of questions, even if they don’t always have easy answers, allows us to keep one foot firmly planted in the present while also looking ahead with imagination, tenacity, and wonder. That’s why we decided that the theme for this year’s Annual Report would be Mabat L’atid: Gazing Towards the Future. That spirit infused our work throughout the kayitz (summer), and it was also palpable when we gathered at our Gala Celebration to honor Ellen Moss Brown, Alumni Leadership Award recipients Gwen and Jeremy Rosenthal, and to offer special recognition to Dr. Alyse Baron and Dr. Andrea Kasowitz. It was evident when we held our first Alumni Reunion retreat in many years, in the triumphant return of our Ohr Lanu Family Camp, and so much more. As we now look ahead towards 2023 and beyond, please join us in extending our deepest love for our chanichim and tzevet, profound appreciation for their families, unending gratitude for the extraordinary efforts made by Ramah’s year-round professionals and the Ojai operations team, and rav todot (many thanks!) to our donors and supporters.

Kayitz 2022 Recap At the end of every Passover seder, we say “l’shana haba’ah b’Yerushalyim,” vocalizing the ancient Jewish longing to return to Jerusalem. In the kayitz (summer) of 2020, our mantra was “l’shana haba’ah b’Ojai,” next year in Ojai. By the time that kayitz 2021 was in full swing our wish had come true — mostly. We were physically back in Ojai, but the ongoing pressures of the pandemic required us to run camp differently: edot (age groups) were separated into pods, meals were held outside, madrichim (counselors) were asked not just to spend their days and nights caring for chanichim (campers) but were also asked to step into the role of moomchim (specialists), and so on. It was incredible to be back at camp, but we were still operating in crisis mode. Perhaps that’s why kayitz 2022 felt, in so many ways, more important than ever — and more 2

magical. “Back to basics” was our new mantra. While we were able to incorporate many of the pandemic-era changes that had worked well and though we continued to eat outside, we were also able to begin rebuilding so many aspects of our program that had been impacted — for campers and for our tzevet (staff) alike. Indeed, after two irregular summers in a row, our third year madrichim and moomchim were in some ways like first year tzevet. This presented a challenge, but it was also an opportunity to take a fresh approach to staff training, and to ask serious questions about how Camp Ramah can provide our dedicated, hard-working tzevet with the tools they need not just to care for our chanichim, not just to provide an industry-leading summer camp program for more than a thousand children each summer, but also to care for themselves. We invested — and continue to invest — heavily in mental health and wellness resources for tzevet. After all, these young people — each of them a current and future leader of our

“ We invested —and continue to invest — heavily in mental health and wellness resources for tzevet.” community and of the Jewish people — also saw their lives upended in so many ways during their formative teenage years and early adulthood. As we look ahead to the future, we will continue to preserve those fundamental aspects of our program that make Camp Ramah what it is, while also remaining steadfastly committed to experimentation, tinkering, and adaptation in order to meet the changing needs of our chanichim, the evolving expectations of their parents, and the ever-increasing capabilities of our tzevet.

2022 Gala Inspires

HONORING ELLEN MOSS BROWN GWEN & JEREMY ROSENTHAL, ALUMNI LEADERSHIP AWARD SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO DR. ALYSE BARON & DR. ANDREA KASOWITZ We were overjoyed to welcome nearly 400 community members to join together on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at Valley Beth Shalom to celebrate Camp Ramah and to honor the devotion and dedication of Ellen Moss Brown, Alumni Leadership Award recipients Gwen & Jeremy Rosenthal, and Dr. Alyse Baron and Dr. Andrea Kasowitz, who received special recognition. The incredible evening raised nearly $700,000 to support the future of Camp Ramah in California. In addition to ensuring financially accessible Jewish camping and content-rich summer programming, net proceeds from this evening established The Ellen Moss Brown Infrastructure and Sustainability Endowment Fund. As Randy Michaels, Chief Operating and Financial Officer, and Dr. Lee Rosen, Board Chair, shared with the community that night, seeding this vital endowment will provide an enduring resource to protect camp from the inevitable threats and challenges posed by an aging infrastructure and a rapidly changing climate. Managing more than 450 acres and over 100,000 square feet of facilities more sustainably will ensure that Camp Ramah will continue to be a home for generations to come. 3

Financial Summary Camp Ramah in California continues to navigate the ongoing effects of the COVID pandemic on our operations. We were thrilled to run a ruach-filled kayitz (summer) 2022 and a rental season at the Zimmer Retreat and Conference Center that further rebuilds following the pandemic-era closure. We ended 2022 with an operational deficit in excess of $1.4 million primarily due to factors including inflation, staffing costs, unexpected capital expenditures, and lower anticipate 2013 enrollment. 2014 2015 While 2016 we 2017 2018 2019 2020 that the impacts of COVID will persist for several Board of 2018 2019 2020 2013 more 2014 years, 2015 the 2016 2017 Directors together with the professional staff is confident in Camp Ramah’s ability to emerge on firm financial footing as the pandemic recedes further into the past and as we look ahead to a bright future. We are profoundly grateful to our donors and community partner organizations for their partnership in this sacred work.

Updates Day Camp

Goldstine Machon Shetach

Camp Ramah is excited to expand our kehillah (community) by launching a new day camp in Los Angeles in the summer of 2024. An LA-area day camp will allow hundreds of chanichim (campers) to begin their Journey for a Lifetime even if they’re not quite ready for an overnight, residential camp experience.

Ramah’s professional staff, together with a team of legal, architectural, public affairs, and land use consultants, continue to meet regularly in order to advance this complex project and navigate the myriad regulatory challenges that have arisen in recent years. A donor briefing was held in early 2022, which included a video presentation, available upon request.

This comes at a critical time for our community. Study after study has shown us just how vital Jewish summer camp is to sustaining our Jewish future. Yet less than twenty-five percent of Jewish children aged 6-12 in Los Angeles attend a Jewish day camp, and Jewish families in L.A. are more likely to send their kids to secular day camps than to Jewish ones. Both surprising statistics emerged from the landmark 2021 Study of Jewish LA, conducted by The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and its partners. Camp Ramah is committed to closing this gap in order to secure a strong, vibrant future for Jewish life in Los Angeles.

Strategic Planning Inspired by our rich history, we are faced with a powerful opportunity to crystalize our vision for the years ahead. As we have grown from recent challenges like the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Thomas Fire, we must ensure we can continue to play a pivotal role in facilitating the Journey for a Lifetime for many young Jews from diverse backgrounds and abilities. To address this sacred responsibility and timely opportunity, Camp Ramah engaged Third Plateau, a social impact strategy firm, to facilitate a strategic planning process in partnership with our dedicated professionals and committed lay leaders. This process aimed to clarify our vision, mission, and values, identify a set of priorities and strategies to realize our mission, and provide a roadmap to guide our strategic direction over the next five years. Through ongoing collaboration with the Board of Directors, the strategic planning steering committee, and other generous volunteers, Camp Ramah’s professional staff has shepherded the strategic plan to its current, final form. We look forward to sharing this exciting plan with the community in the coming months. 5

Remembering Bruce Whizin z'l Bruce Fabian Whizin z’l, who passed away on July 9, 2022 at the age of 91, was devoted to Ramah for over half a century. Bruce’s connection with Ramah goes back to the very beginning. When a group of lay leaders came together to found Camp Ramah in California at his parents’ house, one of the people there suggested including a teenager on the nascent Board of Directors. Bruce was only in high school when he accepted that sacred responsibility. In the decades following his start at Camp Ramah, Bruce would serve on the Boards of nearly a dozen Jewish institutions and help to found Adat Ari El synagogue in the San Fernando Valley. His philanthropic commitments would lead to the creation of The Whizin Foundation and The Whizin Support Foundation at the Jewish Community Foundation, the Shirley and Arthur Whizin Center for the Jewish Future and the Whizin Center for Continuing Education, both at American Jewish University, and the Shirley and Arthur Whizin Center for Bio-Technology at the Technion in Israel. Still, most Ramahniks are likely more familiar with the “Whizin Building,” one of the most coveted indoor programming spaces at camp — due to the air conditioning! In Bruce’s own words, Camp Ramah “is a wondrous place, it’s just a wondrous place.” And it’s one he cared deeply about. During the earliest days in Ojai, he was known to literally pick up a hammer and walk around the campsite hammering in nails that were sticking out of wooden planks and railings. In Bereshit, the first book of the Torah, we read the story of another man with a hammer: Noah. After being given instructions by God for what he is supposed to do — how to build the ark, how to load the animals, and so on — the Torah simply says, ken asah. “So, he did.”

“ Camp Ramah is a wondrous place, it’s just a wondrous place.” — BRUCE WHIZIN

Bruce Whizin was a committed philanthropist and accomplished lay leader, but most importantly, he was a mensch who both embodied and reflected the values of Camp Ramah. “You asked me what I wanted my legacy to be?” Bruce said in 2013, musing on his many decades with Camp Ramah in California. “He tried. If by trying, I succeeded, I think that’s the best anybody can hope for.” Ken asah. 7
