Fred Nielsen, President, High Desert Region PCA
president@highdesertpca.org
By the time you receive this message, we will be less than a week away for the New Members Picnic (for all Club members). I realize you have heard me pushing this picnic in the President's Message and the Monday morning messages, but that is only because we want to see Club members attend. Hopefully, most new members will attend so that we can introduce them to our Club and they will become involved in Club activities.
This year, we are using the New Members Picnic as one of our promised "givebacks" to members. The Club will provide all main entrees and members will only bring a side dish and beverage of choice. That is not a free meal, but close to it. New members just bring themselves. Hope to see all of you at Tracy Stout's beautiful Wildwood Ranch on September 7.
Speaking of Tracy's beautiful Wildwood Ranch, I hope members noticed in the "From the Regions" section in the latest Panorama the picture of Tracy's property with her dogs racing during the Kentucky Derby Event. I failed to pick the winner of the race, but all who attended had a great time at the event. The Club is lucky to have members like Tracy and Michael who volunteer their property and time for Club events.
Our Club drives are almost over for this year. We had an active driving season with a variety of drives including all-Porsche drives, Air-cooled/Classic drives, and SUV drives. We had a mixture of results based on members' participation and comments. One conclusion is there is very little interest in SUV drives and we will probably not offer them next year. We will be soliciting your input in the near future on drives and other events we held this year to assist us in preparing next year's calendar.
One positive note on drives, we had a number of members who attended the Drive Leaders Refresher Course step up and volunteer to lead drives next year. Some members who attended the course actually volunteered to lead some of the final drives this year. Thanks to all of you who volunteered your time to attend the class and lead drives.

Recently, the FOB for our car stopped working at 10:30pm at night at the worst place and time. The FOB is the hand held keyless remote most of us use to unlock or lock the doors of our car. Thank goodness I knew about the hidden key in the FOB and was able to open the car door and use it to start the car.
Yes the battery was dead and I wound up also changing the battery for the other FOB. Thank goodness for Utube for step by step instructions how to change the battery So, when was the last time you checked or changed your FOB batteries?

The High Desert Region Register and Drive is changing for 2024 to Arrive and Drive. There will be no registration or fee for these drives and no directions will be handed out for the drives. We will have separate arrive drives for Porsche SUV owners and separate Saturday Arrive and Drive events. We will also have separate Classic Car Group Arrive and Drives for air cooled and early transaxle Porsches.
There will be several requirements from the participants to make these group drives fun and successful and we are asking for your help to keep these events enjoyable We will be starting our drives from locations outside Bend and they will be different for each monthly drive
Arrive and Drive Rules:
All of the Arrive and Drive events are group drives and will be two to three hours in length on the beautiful roads of Central Oregon.
(1) Since these are group drives and we will be obeying all safety and speed laws all participants are expected to stay together as a group, this includes drive leaders and drive sweeps.
(2) This is not a race and there will be no passing of other cars in our group.
(3) The participants are required to keep the car behind them in sight and also to keep the pace of the car in front The drivers will be required to wait for the car behind them at intersections and corners to insure we stay together as a group. The lead cars will slow or pull over to wait for the cars to remain together and keep everyone in sight so we can continue as a group.
(4) There is no rubber banding allowed and if you want to drive faster or slower than the group please remember this is a group drive and you will be asked to maintain the group pace.
(5) If you are not comfortable with these rules then please don't keep the other participants from enjoying the drives we have planned.

About 30 Porsches assembled at the Sisters High School ready to embark on the McKenzie Pass Highway. There was periods of rain but the curvy twisty road was freshly paved and smooth.
i remembered this portion of road a few years ago that was filled with ruts and uneven surfaces that was not friendly to our finely tuned suspensions.
Now this is a Porsche rated road.
Old McKenzie Highway freshly paved.
John Naitove was our ride leader. John is also a photographer for HDR PCA events, and posts his wonderful photos to promote our club on social media.
Rest stop at the Dee Wright Observatory
The ride going downhill was very curvy and narrow and this portion of the highway has not been repaved yet. That did not stop a spirited drive that tested drivers, tires, and brakes!
As we drove downhill the forest turned to lush green trees and foliage, felt as if we drove into a time warp portal.
This was another great Arrive and Drive.

Crrreeeekkkkk…..Bam…..
“What was that?”
Just another mysterious noise in a reputed haunted house in Hammond, Oregon.
On the recent HDR trip to Astoria, our fearless group stayed in The Commandant’s Quarters, adjacent to Fort Stevens State Park. The towering Victorian, three stories plus attic and cupola, was constructed in 1905. It is well preserved and fully furnished in period appropriate antiques. The home offered six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and two stairways over 5500 square feet.
Unbeknown to us, it also had some unidentified souls residing full time. Nights were characterized by loud squeaks, subtle banging, footsteps above, doors swinging below, scratching inside the walls, whistling windows, and unidentified random moans. All begging for Ghostbusters.
When we returned from excursions to and Long Beach, Washington, things would have moved and wine carafes emptied. The only time the spirits calmed down was while Audrey cooked her amazing paella dish, loaded with fresh prawns, clams, and halibut. It seems the mouthwatering aroma placated the haunts with memories of past feasts.
The long weekend ended too soon, and as we departed the Commandant’s Quarters, we could hear shutters banging and doors squeaking. Our Porsches provided an expedited escape after another fabulous HDR trip.
Ellen Barthoemew was the master bacon cookers all weekend, modeling
Audrey Moore’s custom Bacon and Eggs apron.
Audrey Moore reserved a floating lanai, rented a pontoon boat, and organized a picnic. A paddle board and floaties were present for members to enjoy Elk Lake. And it was capped off by a lakeside concert featuring the Sleepless Truckers. The day featured perfect weather and even the typical July smoke cleared out, allowing views of The Sisters and Mount Bachelor.
There are so many questions……..
Yikes! What was that sound? I turned quickly and witnessed a spectacular dive from our floating party lanai into the crystal-clear waters of Oregon’s Elk Lake. The diver, and yes, screamer, was the High Desert Region’s very own Vice President, Stu Malakoff.
It seems Stu was attempting the difficult step from a pontoon boat to a dock. At the same moment he was pontificating on the difference between a Targa 4S and a Targa GTS and was distracted, as he tends to speak not just with his mouth but also with his hands, arms, and entire body. His left foot missed the wooden dock and instead was placed adroitly into the water. As he descended to the depths of Elk Lake, Stu’s scream transitioned from baritone to tenor soprano, either from fright or cold water.
All present gasped, unsure if we should assist or laugh. As he sunk, Stu’s eyes seemed to grow, his scream still audible even though under water. Like a piece of broken Styrofoam, he quickly bobbed to the surface, sputtering and cussing like a drunken sailor. As we dragged his sodden carcass back on the dock, we noticed several new items on the bottom of Elk Lake: sunglasses, wallet, keys.
It was suggested he go back in and retrieve them, as he was already wet. The suggestion was not well received or appreciated. Fortunately for Stu, among our group was one Good Samaritan, the renown David Sarmiento. He graciously dove in and gathered Stu’s belongings.
Other than damage to Stu’s dignity, all was well. Personal possessions were accounted for, clothes dried off, and the celebration continued. Stu’s only request was “Don’t tell Fred . ”

No Politics Racing
Shoplight September 2024
Correspondent’s note: this is part two of a two part series on German Transaxle of America. Special thanks to Ken and Kateka at GTA for arranging the meeting with NPR.
Ok here is your choice: Stay home in the relative coolness of a non-air conditioned house watching the Olympics or head back to German Transaxle of America to interview two very interesting guys, Brandon Alexander and Paul Guard, with a company by the name of No Politics Racing. And to further influence your decision, I will add the President of HDRPCA, Fred Nielsen will go along as a trusted sidekick and advisor. No brainer, correct?
The company No Politics Racing (NPR) is the brainchild of Brandon Alexander. Like all of the owner’s bios highlighted in the Shoplight Series, Brandon is a car guy from very early on-initially inspired by his father’s friend who raced Shelbys in Mexico. Brandon’s Grandad further influenced the youngster with his 1983 911 3.0 Targa, a car Brandon ended up driving and racing all through High School in Auburn, California.
Now hang with me for a second as I weave quickly into the narrative a high school sweetheart named Jessica (and later Mrs. Alexander) whose uncle, the renowned Paul Guard, provided high end gearing components for the automobile racing world. Brandon, thought how great it would be if “I could do that same thing as Paul my entire life.” His love for the marque continued though college and five years ago with the valuable guidance of Paul, Brandon created No Politics Racing with the goal of designing and building the highest quality gearing and associated parts for Porsche cars.
That name! For your correspondent a refreshing reflection of Brandon’s attitude: “We make the best products for every Porsche owner. Being kind. Sharing kindness.” I’ll take a bakers dozen kind Sir!
All products-Limited Slip Differentials, Gears, Gearing and Main Shaft kits-are designed and built in house and while geared (sorry) for the racing world most can be utilized in non-racing Porsches. Preferred Installers like Ken Harvey at German Transaxle of America will suggest NPR parts to many of his clients when overhauling or rebuilding their transaxles. (As a quick historical aside, Porsche designed the first Limited Slip Differential feeling such a design was useful in improving the handling of rear engine cars.
What will a non-racing modern Porsche driver get if he or she upgrades to NPR Limited Slip Differential and gears? Much better handling when accelerating and decelerating. More control when diving into corners. Even 356s benefit by having both rear wheels spinning on acceleration.
And when braking the LSD acts on the 356s like ABS. Brandon feels this makes the cars safer. And speaking of 356s, Rod Emory utilizes NPR products in his well-regarded 356 Outlaw builds. It was during this portion of the interview discussing 356s, that Fred rose to the occasion and with Paul engaged in interesting histories of their numerous experiences with 356s. Each gent easily understood the advantage of having a LSD as part of the 356 transaxle.
Brandon holding a 930 and 356 Differential
As you can clearly see from the photographs, the NPR products are things of beauty. In the hand each is well designed with a definite reassuring heft.
If you are a full-blown Porsche racer, an occasional track devotee or a happy high desert road carver who is interested in stepping up the performance of your transaxle check out the No Politics Racing website (nopoliticsracing.com) and give Kateka a call at German Transaxle to set up an appointment with Ken to discuss your options.
I did not forget a Shoplight tradition: Brandon’s fav Porsche? The aforementioned red 1983 911 SC Targa with a 2015 Cayman S PCNA Show Car closing in at second place.
Our club was represented by Alan Fuller, Debbie Fuller and John Sturmark. If there were others from the club, we never discovered them, nor saw anyone we recognized. For a cruise of over 3000 passengers 900 were PCA members from over 100 clubs across the globe (saw several name tags from Great Britian).
July 28th - August 4th
The cruise departed from the port of Seattle, pier 91 This was a Princess cruise who has partnered with PCA North America, and this was the third such cruise The next PCA Treffen cruise will be September 2025 and depart from New York and travel the eastern coast through Canadian Maritime providences and back.
With our special PCA lanyards and wrist band that held our cruise “medallion” we could easily find other Porsche members to start conversations. Another sponsor was Tag Heuer who provided one of the seminars.
One large event sponsored by the Porsche club was the die cast concours de elegance. Lots of participants and interesting displays on the cruise.
PCA provided lots of swag and seminars. Pirelli was a major sponsor too and held both a pre and post cruise party as well as a seminar on tires. With our special PCA lanyards and wrist band that held our cruise “medallion” we could easily find other Porsche members to start conversations. Another sponsor was Tag Heuer who provided one of the seminars.
Our first stop on this inside passage cruise. John’s excursion was a kayak trip around the inlets of Ketchican. Lots of wildlife. Eagles, seals, otters, and a whale were seen. Debbie and Alan took the Princess sponsored excursion of a Totem Pole site and learned about the making and meaning of the poles. Ketchican had lots of history and we explored the town by foot. Unfortunately (for some) we found a quilt fabric store and leftwith fabric!
Juneau
The most rain of the trip was here. Downpour all day. However, this stop included the Mendenhall glacier. John took an excursion that allowed him to visit the glacier up close. Debbie and Alan visited the site from afar but were able to see the glacier from the visitor center. Also a tram ride up the mountain in town allowed beautiful views of the harbor and our ship from above the town.Skagway
Last stop in Alaska. Most folks took a half day train ride. Several like us visited the town by foot. We visited the museum and walked the streets and visited numerous shops including another fabric store. And yes, bought more fabric!
Our last cruise stop and the shortest docking time. However, the town was close to the terminal for easy access whether walking or riding. We took a horse drawn carriage ride that took us through town and by the Parliament building and Empress hotel, both tourist stops. The local Porsche club was also there and met up with many Porsche club members from the cruise.
The ship was pretty amazing. Our first cruise on an ocean cruise. Food was wonderful. Plenty of activities and entertainment sponsored by Princess. Great restaurants and bars. The service was impeccable. Rooms were great. Could not feel much movement while on board so seasickness was not any issue. Already booked another cruise for 2026. The next PCA Treffen at Sea is possible too.
