On April 29, 2024, the HDR PCA will be 24 years old. For those of you who were not involved with the Club in the early years and who might be interested in how we started, I will take you back to our origin to the best of my memory.
In the fall of 1999, at a Porsche car show, Fred Faria got a small group who were later identified as the four Bills and two Freds together trying to interest us in forming our own Region. That group consisted of Bill Moore, Bill Zilk, Bill Bein, Bill Shaw, Fred Faria and me.
At that time we were part of the Oregon Region and due to the distance, we did almost nothing with their Club. In several subsequent breakfast meetings, Fred Faria kept pushing us to move forward with the idea of a new region. Finally, we all agreed that it made sense and filed the application with PCA Once approved, all the paperwork was prepared with the help of Brian Gingerich a member and local lawyer, and Bill Moore agreed to be the first president. At that time, I believe the Club had 20-40 primary members. Each member knew every Club member and all of us drove 356’s and air-cooled 911’s.
We can all see what 24 years have done where we have grown to almost 300 primary members and almost 500 total members. Our growth was most certainly assisted by having a Porsche dealership in town with the dealership owner Tom Anderson, being a Club member.
Often it just takes the push and drive of one individual to make special things happen In this case it was the special efforts of Fred Faria to motivate us to move forward to forming the HDR Who knows without his tenacity and drive if the HDR would have ever been formed.
I recently sat down with Fred and his long-time friend Phil Fenn, a previous HDR member, where we were discussing old times in the Club and Fred mentioned that he still remembers the great salmon cookouts at Bill and Mary Zilk’s where almost every Club member was in attendance. I informed him sadly that we don’t have those any longer, but we do have a very active club offering many social events, tours and car activities and drives.
As food for thought, April 29, 2025, will be our 25th Anniversary and we should recognize it with a special event so will each of you put on your thinking caps and come up with some good ideas and share them with Gretchen Kolb, our Activities Chairperson.

Drum roll please, ClubExpress and our new web site will be rolling out this month! The HDR web team is on schedule. Thank you Web Team!
Last March 2023 I heard about Cars and Coffee was starting up and was being held at Porsche Bend. I got my coffee cup and headed out to the Sunday event expecting to see a dozen guys standing around looking somewhat bored. When I drove in the parking lot there were cars and people everywhere! The dealership was filled with Porsches and lots of people, this was a successful event. Cars and Coffee brought a new venue to kick tires, talk about Porsches and meet new and old friends. The monthly event is FREE, FUN, and CASUAL.
Greg Domantay was the catalyst and inspiration of Cars and Coffee in Bend. Greg started this event on his own initiative. Thank you Greg!

The High Desert Region Register and Drive is changing for 2024 to Arrive and Drive. There will be no registration or fee for these drives and no directions will be handed out for the drives. We will have separate arrive drives for Porsche SUV owners and separate Saturday Arrive and Drive events. We will also have separate Classic Car Group Arrive and Drives for air cooled and early transaxle Porsches
There will be several requirements from the participants to make these group drives fun and successful and we are asking for your help to keep these events enjoyable. We will be starting our drives from locations outside Bend and they will be different for each monthly drive.
Arrive and Drive Rules:
All of the Arrive and Drive events are group drives and will be two to three hours in length on the beautiful roads of Central Oregon.
(1) Since these are group drives and we will be obeying all safety and speed laws all participants are expected to stay together as a group
(2) This is not a race and there will be no passing of other cars in our group.
(3) The participants are required to keep the car behind them in sight and also to keep the pace of the car in front. The drivers will be required to wait for the car behind them at intersections and corners to insure we stay together as a group. The lead cars will slow or pull over to wait for the cars to remain together and keep everyone in sight so we can continue as a group.
(4) There is no rubber banding allowed and if you want to drive faster or slower than the group please remember this is a group drive and you will be asked to maintain the group pace.
(5) If you are not comfortable with these rules then please don't keep the other participants from enjoying the drives we have planned

“Porsche is a streamlined creature that wants to show how fast it is. It moves even when standing still.”
Last winter during our weekly lunches, fellow members John Sturmark and Alan Fuller and I would always discuss All Things Porsche John and Alan had all the engineering knowledge and I had an enthusiasm for the design and image of these iconic cars we are all so privileged to be the current caretakers. This led us to seek out the possibility of creating a space that we could all get together and exchange and admire these Beautiful Automobiles.
I saw this as an opportunity to encourage our Members to open their garages and create a new community of the Porsche Mystique and share this with our members, neighbors, and friends and to showcase engineering as art forms.
Last March we launched our 1st Cars and Coffee on March 19th, the 3rd Sunday of the month.
Teaming up with Porsche Bend, Jamie Reed and his crew cleared out the parking lot This allowed us enough room to showcase 24 Porsches, which included a 356, 912, 968, 993, 10 - 911’s, Boxsters and a Cayman, and a few Cayenne’s and Macan’s
Cars and Coffee in Bend, Oregon was off to a great start.
Looking forward to the months ahead, I thought we could highlight the various models as groupings right in front of Porsche Bend. As each month marched on, we continued to highlight the many models from the 356 to the newest 911’s. Carrying this over into 2024, new ideas are happening and the more the merrier.
A quick note about the other half of the equation I get our Coffee from a great small business on 2nd street called Cafe des Chutes. If you haven’t been there you are definitely missing out on a premier coffee shop in Bend. I am a Big believer in small business success, I consider my car to be a small business that I look after and nurture.
My initial goal was achieved in creating a place that I could see these streamlined creatures and get to know the owners. These connections have already created new opportunities and because Fred asked, I now am part of the Board for our Club. Thanks again to John, Alan and Jim Holmes for supporting me and this endeavor. My continued goal is to foster this great community of cars and encourage our members to show up every 3rd Sunday of the Month, rain or shine from 10-12 noon for Great Cars, Great Coffee and Great conversation.
Also, looking forward to Mike Simmons drives and Audrey Moore’s
trips See you on the road Greg

The High Desert Region recently visited Preserve Auto Detail for a Tech Session demonstration of the dry ice cleaning process. Dry ice allows for a very efficient and deep cleaning of all components and ease of access to difficult to reach areas. Members were amazed by the positive results.

The subject of this tech session was to view and educate the participants of an engine failure on a 2005 Boxster S, and to showcase the freshly rebuilt engine out of the vehicle and also the failed engine parts.
The group was met by Jeremy Williams, co-owner of Matrix. Jeremy introduced his co-owner brother Justin, crew including Master Porsche technician Blake, and soon to be the new club secretary Trish Calderon. Jeremy provided a brief history of their business including the two Matrix shops in the Portland area. The group was provided with coffee and donuts on this cold winter day.
Some history was provided on the Boxster that included the fact that this was the third engine for this car. The first/original engine experienced an IMS bearing failure on its way from Arizona to Oregon directly after this owner had purchased the car used. The second engine was a used replacement engine which had been installed at another shop.
This third engine was recently fully rebuilt by 9xx, a well-known California rebuilder, and was on display out of the vehicle. Jeremy provided some history on the company and their reputation. The details of engine number 2 were not known and therefore the reasons for its failure weren’t clear. What was clear was the amount of damage the engine sustained. On display were the connecting rod bearings showing significant scoring on one side of the engine. Also, the oil filter was cut-apart showing the amounts of metal and plastic debris inside the filter, and also discussed was the amount of metal debris in the oil pan once removed. Additional displays included IMS bearings in various failures. This engine rebuild received an upgraded IMS bearing kit as standard.
Jeremy discussed that their shop does not typically rebuild the M96 engines themselves (most of the popular engine rebuilders have already bought up all of the M96 cores), but acquires them professionally rebuilt from companies like 9xx, Matrix doing the engine removal and re-installation.
The Boxster was displayed on the lift showing all the cables and lines requiring reconnections, and miscellaneous other parts needing to be refitted once the rebuilt engine is installed.
Matrix Integrated has numerous bays for repairs, and is a clean well run shop. Their repair and service capabilities include Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, MINI, Range Rover, to name a few.
Last year our beloved HDR members Roger and Mary Sanders announced their move from Bend, Oregon to her hometown of Harmony, Minnesota. The first question is “Where?” The second question is “Why?”
To answer the second question first, the move is to be near family. Can’t argue with that.
And to answer the first question second, sounds like an excuse for a road trip!
Consultation with my trusty iPhone reveals Harmany, Minnesota to be “The Biggest Little Town in Southwest Minnesota.” Uhh, are there any other towns in Southern Minnesota?
Harmony has a population of 989, down from 1,028 in 1989. It is located a stone’s throw from Iowa and not near much else. Harmony and Fillmore County have a growing population of Old Order Amish, making onehorsepower transit more common than 500-horsepower Porsches.
Now that I knew pretty much everything there is to know about Harmony, trip planning was in order Siri informed me the most direct route is 1,880 miles, mostly following I-84 and I-90. Boring!
If we are going to a classic small town, we need a classic highway. And thus, we deferred to our hometown transcontinental US Highway 20. Just follow US 20 east to Waterloo, Iowa, hang a left and you are there!
First leg of the road trip is Bend to Idaho Falls. Departing Bend, the ghost town of Millican is an auspicious start Burns is a chance to gas up and grab the requisite road trip food: diet Pepsi and Fritos Pulling into Vale we have the obligatory photo stop at the Bates Motel Norman, are you there?
In Idaho, Highway 20 briefly merges on to I-84. We remember why we detest interstates. But thankfully, Highway departs at Mountain Home (where are the mount Gramp amazi

We are and then through Yellowstone National Park. Whoa! Not so fast. First, we have to negotiate the West Yellowstone entry station and its ridiculous gridlock. A 45 minute back up to enter the park, and then Presto! All the traffic vanishes. Yellowstone remains a magical place Wide empty spaces, bison, geysers, canyons Simply spectacular
Cody, Wyoming is next, and lunch at Irma’s, allegedly built by Buffalo Bill. Of course, we opted for the Buffalo Burger and the Calamity Jane Burger. Fat and happy, we again aim east, passing through Thermopolis and Casper, briefly following I-25. (Still detest interstates.) Destination: Chadron, Nebraska.
Let’s suffice to say Chadron looked like a good overnight stop on the map. Chadron is a classic food desert. If you like deep fried everything, you will love Chadron. Accommodations were a bit sketchy. Our Porsche was less than happy between a F350 and a Ram 3500 dually, neither of which had ever been washed. All this made for an early start.
US 20 east from of Chadron is auto pilot country. No turns, no stops, no scenery. Just pedal to the metal to Sioux City, Iowa. And if you thought Nebraska was less than exciting, wait until Iowa. We were tempted to detour to Iowa Falls, but deferred, fearing another Idaho Falls disappointment.
At last! Waterloo, Iowa, where we make a left turn towards Harmony. Waterloo has a very attractive downtown along the Cedar River. Heading north we pass through corn, soy, and cattle operations. North into Minnesota (the scenery doesn’t change) and a quick jog east to Harmony. Three days, 1,880 miles.
Now that we made it to Harmony, what to do?
First, we cruised the town. Two minutes later, we cruised it again. Hmm. There seem to be multiples of everything: 1st Street SE, 1st Street SW, 1st Street NE, 1st Street NW, 1st Avenue SW, 1st Avenue SE, 1st Avenue NE, 1st Avenue NW and so on through 4th Street/Avenue. Yikes!
Once you master navigation, you can admire the very attractive downtown, comprised of classic Midwest brick. Lots of shade trees provide a cool, comfortable feel.
Harmony Baking Company made the entire trip worthwhile. Scones, cookies, and muffins. Call ahead, they are open by appointment only. The Harmony Distillery makes handcrafted vodka, whiskey, and bourbon. Estelle’s Eatery is the place to go for a bite. Fried, pan fried, deep fired, oven fried, or air fried, they will prepare it how you want it.
Our Porsche was beginning to feel lonely in Harmony, so we sought out a companion Pick up trucks seem to rule the road Happily, we came upon a 911 by City Hall. It was a different body style, but still it said 911.
Outside the city limits, endless fields extend to the horizon. Occasional clumps of trees mark farmhouses. Taken together, the landscape is serene and calming. No dreaded Interstates here. And almost no crime.
Maybe Roger and Mary have found more than harmony in Harmony.
