This months message is from our Vice President, Stu Malakoff.
What brought you to the Porsche brand? For some of HDRPCA’s “elder statesmen” like John Naitove, buying a foreign performance car was part realization of a dream car purchase, and part having a confident outlook on life. John still owns his first new Porsche, a 911 SC he bought for $28k back in 1981. Porsches have gotten bigger and pricier since then. But the rationale for buying a first Porsche remains largely unchanged for many: it’s part living out your dreams and part confidence.
I think we can all agree that the Porsche marque still represents an unflinching, uncompromising approach to rarified yet approachable performance-focused engineering which no other car manufacturer can match. Simply put, Porsche creates driver-oriented cars and SUVs, unlike so many other automotive manufacturers which now sell appliances with wheels.
Porsche’s mission spoke to me when I purchased my first one in the midst of the COVID pandemic And two weeks ago, I got the keys of my third Porsche when Vicky and I experienced a white-glove European Delivery in the beating heart of all things Porsche: Zuffenhausen, Germany. We spent a week with our gorgeous ‘24 911 Targa 4S, sporting paint-to-sample Porsche Racing Green Metallic livery and supple Cohiba brown leather. And a 7 speed manual transmission. In a future Downshift issue once we’re reunited with ‘Greenie” back in Bend, I’ll dive into our experience, from ordering the car through Kendall Porsche, to our visit to Porsche’s state-of-the-art Taycan production line and our autobahn escapades where we hit 167mph in the Bavarian countryside.
For now, it suffices to say that Porsche remains a focused organization which still delivers performance and exclusivity to some very lucky drivers.
With that context, the HDRPCA social media committee is looking for a few volunteers, particularly members who are new to Porsche. We will create fun, inspiring content on Facebook and Instagram that will appeal to existing Porsche owners who are not HDRPCA members, as well as prospective Porsche owners If you’re interested in helping out, please text me at 609 933 7085 or email me at stu@bendwealth com to learn more

The High Desert Region Register and Drive is changing for 2024 to Arrive and Drive There will be no registration or fee for these drives and no directions will be handed out for the drives We will have separate arrive drives for Porsche SUV owners and separate Saturday Arrive and Drive events. We will also have separate Classic Car Group Arrive and Drives for air cooled and early transaxle Porsches.
There will be several requirements from the participants to make these group drives fun and successful and we are asking for your help to keep these events enjoyable. We will be starting our drives from locations outside Bend and they will be different for each monthly drive.
Arrive and Drive Rules:
All of the Arrive and Drive events are group drives and will be two to three hours in length on the beautiful roads of Central Oregon
(1) Since these are group drives and we will be obeying all safety and speed laws all participants are expected to stay together as a group.
(2) This is not a race and there will be no passing of other cars in our group.
(3) The participants are required to keep the car behind them in sight and also to keep the pace of the car in front. The drivers will be required to wait for the car behind them at intersections and corners to insure we stay together as a group. The lead cars will slow or pull over to wait for the cars to remain together and keep everyone in sight so we can continue as a group.
(4) There is no rubber banding allowed and if you want to drive faster or slower than the group please remember this is a group drive and you will be asked to maintain the group pace
(5) If you are not comfortable with these rules then please don't keep the other participants from enjoying the drives we have planned.

Eine Deutsche Autoliebe Geschichte (A German Car Love Story) by
Tom PetrovichEveryone who’s fallen in love with German cars has a story. This is mine.
My first relationship with a German car started in high school with a new 1974 bright yellow Volkswagen super beetle. It looked harmless in a seventies hippie flower-power sort of way and as such attracted a few strange girls who thought the owner was harmless as well. She got me through high school, college, and many road trips. She taught me how to drive a stick shift, drive in the snow, and maintain and fix cars.
But when the battery finally fell through the salt-rusted floor pan it was time for her to go.
In 1982 being newly employed and newly married to my wife Kimberle, we decided a white 1977 911S would be the perfect car for Texas. It wasn’t. It had a horsepower-deficient,emissions-choked engine and being air-cooled the A/C was only for decoration.
But since I loved her looks and handling I was willing to put up with these shortcomings. At least for awhile, until I decided she needed an upgrade and took on an engine rebuild to 1973 2.7L RS specs.
She taught me a lot about flat sixes and more importantly how much fun it is to drive a sports car Sadly thirteen years later our love affair ended when we sold her and moved to Portland.
The nineties was the time of the dot-com bubble where every monkey who could throw darts made a lot of money on internet stocks
To show off my skills as a sapien with good aim I bought a new silver 2000 Audi A6 with a 4.2L V8. Although she was a big, sexy autobahn bomber with a powerful engine and luxurious ride she was way overweight and ponderous in the curves. We stuck it out together for ten years but then decidedto part ways.
After that I entered a bleak period with no German cars until the 718 Boxster came out with a 4 0L NA six
I poured over the many glowing car magazine reviews about epic handling, a silky smooth manual gear box and a screaming flat six. I gawked at the glamour shots of her sexy, topless curves and my deutsche autoliebe was stirred once again.
We first met on the Porsche configurator web site. I pulled in my wife in to help with options as she has a much better eye for colors, style and dressing things up. Our goal was to build a car that paid homage to our old 911 so we selected ice grey metallic paint, agate gray leather and 20” Carrera sport wheels. I think we did it justice.
Production in Stuttgart completed in January 2023 and we scheduled a date to meet in Leipzig in April. Our trip plans fell into place after many internet sessions and a massive excel spreadsheet detailing the cities we planned to visit - Frankfurt, Berlin, Stuttgart, Fussen, Salzburg and Munich – as well as carefully calculated routes, hotels and sights
On April 5th we landed in Frankfurt, took a train to Leipzig and checked into our hotel. The next morning, jet-lagged but too excited to feel it, we were shuttled to the factory where after introductions, an overview of the day’s events and a quick cup of coffee we stepped outside to the raucous sound of Porsches screaming around a racetrack at 200 kph+. I climbed into a Cayman GTS with an assigned pro driver at the wheel who showed me the precise braking and turn-in points.
Those hot laps woke me up like a nose full of smelling salts! And then it was my turn I gave it my best but I’m sure my enthusiasm made him a little more than shall we say “nervous” I’m not sure whatthe opposite of buzz kill is but this was definitely it! This was easily one of the best experiences a car lover could have and one I would definitely recommend.
After my nerves calmed we enjoyed an excellent factory tour followed by a gourmet lunchoverlooking the track. While they don’t allow pictures in the factory I can report that the excellent engineering that goes into the design of the cars also goes into the design of their factories and logistic systems. It’s truly an incredible symphony to watch and no wonder these cars are built so well.
After taking the keys and finalizing some paperwork we drove back for one more night in Leipzig followed by a month of grand touring in Germany and Austria. We learned that European delivery and driving on a track and autobahn is a blast and great way to really appreciate these cars and what they can do near their limits.
This girl is really special and I’m looking forward to taking her on more dates, drives and spoiling her. (The car AND my wife I mean. ;)
Editors notes. I was a Cars and Coffee event and saw this Porsche Boxster convertible parked in the lot, the color caught my eye, it was white diamonds mixed with metallic that shimmered in the morning light.
As I drooled over this Boxster, Pat walked up and I introduced myself asking what color is this? Pats response was “Ice Grey Metallic”. The car held me in a trance. After a bit asked Pat that I would love to do a feature article about his car in downshift and he smiled Yes.

The HDR May monthly dinner was cancelled, it seems no one was interested in the Diner location or menu. The HDR June dinner location will be different, maybe outdoor, and for sure FUN!
On May 4, 2024, 157,000 people crowded into Churchill Downs to witness the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. Those attending wore fantastic hats and colorful Derby outfits, sipped on $22 mint juleps, forked out $40 for parking, and placed bets worth $210 million.
Meanwhile, in Central Oregon, Derby fans gathered at Tracy Stout’s acclaimed and serene Wildwood Ranch to enjoy the festivities in a decidedly more civilized atmosphere.
The High Desert Region had 42 members convene on a stormy afternoon. They wore fantastic hats and colorful Derby outfits, sipped on included mint juleps, had ample free parking, and placed $200 in bets, all of which was donated to local equine rescue

While the weather was threatening all afternoon, the party moved inside Tracy’s welcoming home. A member-provided potluck lunch was unbelievable in its quantity and quality. No one (including Rosie and Eva) went home hungry.
Many attendees proclaimed the event the best HDR party ever. Everyone who attended wants this to become an annual event.

Photos by John NaitoveThe first Arive and Drive of the year brought out about 30 Porsches on a drive out to Post, Oregon. There was plenty of Porsche rated roads and wonderful scenery.
A lunch stop in Post featured a meat loaf sandwich and spirted Porsche conversations. This was an amazing start to the driving season.
“This was the best Arrive and Drive in years” - Ken MooreStu and Fred discuss blue Porsches
Really, forums were the very first form of social media pre-dating Facebook, Instagram, and the like by a decade or two. Wikipedia defines social media as “ … interactive technologies that facilitate the creation, sharing, and aggregation of content, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks.” Social media as we know it today does indeed let people create and share ideas (and misinformation) thus creating virtual communities, but most of it is not organized and therefore not a functional repository of information on shared interests, also known as a“knowledgebase”. Organization and access to specialized information is essential to such groups.
But why our own forums?
As it relates to our common interest the world of Porsches, and in particular our Region of the PCA we too have a desire to share information about our cars and their use, and of course our club activities. But why does the HDR need its own forums when there are quite a few Porsche forums around the world that have existed for years (with the alpha being Rennlist.com)?
Rather than some anonymous person with a weird username that you have no idea whether they are credible or not, we may have actual relationships and some chance of actually knowing who is providing that forum advice on how to change the cabin air filter on your 996. Further, with all of us being somewhat local, there’s some chance we can go deeper and perhaps actually provide some real help to each other, or at least get on the phone and discuss issues more fully. I think (hope?) that the pandemic taught us the value of a real community, . Just an example, I took a really great four-day trip last year in my Boxster to the Lost Coast of Northern California, it was windy road nirvana. It was so enjoyable that I’ll be doing it again this year and I plan to share all the details about it and the experience in the forums complete with maps and pictures.
With what forums are, and why they could benefit us, now established let’s talk software. The HDR made the decision in 2023 to deploy a CMS (club management software) solution in 2023. After an in-depth selection process Q1 2024 saw us deploy the system we chose, ClubExpress. One of the big reasons we chose ClubExpress is that is an all-in-one solution. In addition to the tools for managing all our events, photos, documents, newsletters (sorry Ralph, magazines), it also has built-in forum software. Now the semi-bad news, the forum module is a bit on the basic side.
porsche356registry.org, which also uses CE, opted to not use the built-in forum module, but rather installed an unrelated forum package that is more advanced. The bad news about that is that you need to have two logins, one for the website and one for the forums. I find this confusing and annoying, and installation of outside forum software creates quite a few other complications and adds management workload and cost. Good news: once you’re logged into CE then you’re automatically logged into the forums.
To help get everyone started here are a few “helpful hints” that should help you have a better experience.
Once you have logged into ClubExpress the Forums are the third menu item, just click and you’re automatically logged in. As you may have already discovered there are several menu items that are not available to the public or those not logged in, the Forums are one of them for privacy reasons.
• Tweak your Forum settings
You may already know that all of your personal “profile” settings can be accessed from the login menu which is always located in the upper right corner. Once you get to your profile screen you can select
• Subscribing to a thread
Once you’re in a thread and have some interest in it you can “subscribe” to it. That means that you’ll get sent an email whenever there is any new activity in the thread without having to go look.
• Ask forum questions over in the Forums
You’ll notice that there is a Forum for help with the forum software in the Club section toward the bottom. Please ask your questions there, that way everyone else can benefit from both the question and the answer. Of course that’s true of any forum post it’s always available and organized in the right place for those coming behind you!
I hope this was helpful, and I look forward to seeing you in the forums! …Randy
There's been rumors of a new collaboration between two of the iconic car manufacturers. Parents, if you will. This car, seen around Central Oregon and captured in the photo for the first time, shows what appears to be Porsche 911 Turbo.
However, with the new EV platform that Porsche has been developing, it also appears that to get that electric power platform into the 911 frame, Porsche has teamed up with Tesla. What has been hinted at as the 9Twin (1 1 get it?) it has the twin turbos, twin intercoolers, twin clutch (much to the disappointment of Engineering - but in keeping with the new nomenclature, Marketing has now referred to it, not as "Dual Clutch", but "Twin") - all so popular on the top tier 911 Turbo - and now incorporates the twin motors from Tesla. It also sports twin front seats, twin front wheels, twin rear wheels, and as the future press release will indicate - a lot of other "Twin features".
It also features a front tow hook for when the batteries run out.
While it seems questionable what the exact market for the car might be, we are sure that as any parent of twins will say, "We love them both..." But being birthed roughly 60 years apart, we agonize over the labor involved!
Our High Desert Region will reach its 25th anniversary in 2025 It’s a perfect time to celebrate that by refreshing our region’s logo through a redesign that will look compatible with the PCA National logo with which it will commonly be seen and will provide for easy replication across various media such as the new website, name badges, stickers, business cards/printed materials, hats/clothing, grille badges, woven patches, etc.
The HDR Board wants to make sure members are included in this process, so we need two groups of volunteers. The first group of volunteers develops candidates for the new logo, either individually or in teams, however they choose. A different group of volunteers reviews and validates the logo candidates to determine that the submissions meet these criteria developed last year: The voting process will include keeping our current logo and NO change to the existing HDR logo.
• Understated and elegant, not too complicated, and approachable
• Includes design elements that:
• communicate we are a car club
• reflect our regions uniqueness’s (landscape, culture, etc )
• capture the spirit of the HDRPCA club and its members
• Provides clear identity information – communicates the name of the club and PCA
• Honors the spirit and heritage of the Porsche brand
Once we have a set of logo candidates developed and validated (expected to be around the end of August) members will vote and if the club selects a new logo it will be in time to adopt its use by the beginning of 2025.
If you’d like to develop a candidate for the new logo, you are welcome to get started and plan on submitting your logo candidate or candidates around mid-August. If you’d like to be part of the second group, to validate the submissions against the criteria mentioned above, please let Fred Nielsen know by the end of June.
Below is an image of our current logo as well as two candidates already developed:

A 15-year-old came home with a Porsche and his parents began to yell and scream, "Where did you get that car?"
He calmly told them, "I bought it today." "With what money?!" demanded his parents. "We know what a Porsche costs."
"Well," said the boy, "this one cost me $15."
The parents began to yell even louder. "Who would sell a car like that for $15?!" they asked.
"It was the lady up the street," said the boy. "Don't know her name. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy a Porsche for $15."
"Oh my goodness," moaned the mother,. Who knows what she will do next? John, you go right up there and see what's going on."
So the boy's father walked up the street to the house where the lady lived and found her out in the yard calmly planting flowers. He introduced himself as the father of the boy to whom she had sold a Porsche for $15 and demanded to know why she did it.
"Well," she said, "this morning I got a phone call from my husband. I thought he was on a business trip, but I learned from a friend he has run off to Hawaii with his secretary and really doesn't intend to come back. He asked me to sell his new Porsche and send him the money. So I did."
