PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Fred Nielsen, President, High Desert Region PCA
president@highdesertpca.org
As I write the July message, I realize we have had five different HDR events this week consisting of a Cars and Coffee, members' dinner and informal car show, two drives and a tech session, and there is still the Cowboy Dinner scheduled for July 28, a wide variety of offerings for the members.
Next month doesn't slow down either, beginning with the Bavarian Adventure Tour on July 9-12. This is an exciting tour led by Rob and Penny Byrd and there is still time to register for the event. The month continues with a wide range of activities similar to those offered in June.
In order to have a supply of trained group drive leaders, we plan to offer a group drive leader training session in July. The instruction portion will be followed by a training drive Any member is invited to attend the training, but we encourage members who might want to lead a drive to attend More on this to follow at a later date
The last item I want to discuss in this message is the possible update to our club logo. As I mentioned in the last Monday message, this issue has been on the table for over a year and it is time to resolve it, one way or the other. Our current club logo was selected by a majority vote of club members twenty-four years ago. Many members feel it has history of our club and the club should retain the logo. Others feel it is outdated and time for an update.
Recently we sent an email to members asking for volunteers to submit potential logos for members to consider. We also asked for club volunteers to serve on a committee to review the logo submissions to be sure they capture the key elements of our environment and culture that we want represented in our logo. All submissions that meet these standards will be presented to members along with the two submissions we currently have and our current logo. Members will vote and the logo receiving the most votes will be the club's logo
We are asking that logo submissions be received by August 31 so that they can receive committee review and be submitted to members for a vote by October 1. If there is a change in our logo, this allows time to process it for our 25th anniversary next April.

Arrive and Drive (A&D) - Classic Car Group (CCG) - SUV
The High Desert Region Register and Drive is changing for 2024 to Arrive and Drive. There will be no registration or fee for these drives and no directions will be handed out for the drives. We will have separate arrive drives for Porsche SUV owners and separate Saturday Arrive and Drive events We will also have separate Classic Car Group Arrive and Drives for air cooled and early transaxle Porsches
There will be several requirements from the participants to make these group drives fun and successful and we are asking for your help to keep these events enjoyable. We will be starting our drives from locations outside Bend and they will be different for each monthly drive.
Arrive and Drive Rules:
All of the Arrive and Drive events are group drives and will be two to three hours in length on the beautiful roads of Central Oregon.
(1) Since these are group drives and we will be obeying all safety and speed laws all participants are expected to stay together as a group, this includes drive leaders and drive sweeps
(2) This is not a race and there will be no passing of other cars in our group.
(3) The participants are required to keep the car behind them in sight and also to keep the pace of the car in front. The drivers will be required to wait for the car behind them at intersections and corners to insure we stay together as a group. The lead cars will slow or pull over to wait for the cars to remain together and keep everyone in sight so we can continue as a group.
(4) There is no rubber banding allowed and if you want to drive faster or slower than the group please remember this is a group drive and you will be asked to maintain the group pace.
(5) If you are not comfortable with these rules then please don't keep the other participants from enjoying the drives we have planned
The club has scheduled a variety of drives this year and in order for these to be both safe and fun, we are going to hold a refresher course for potential drive and tour leaders during July. The class will include a short discussion period followed by a drive. We need more group drive leaders and encourage members who have an interest in leading a drive or tour to attend. If you don't want to lead a drive, but just enjoy the drives, you may benefit by attending the class and enjoying the drive that follows. More on this at a later date.

This was a street view the next morning out our hotel window. It did not involve our cars which were parked safely the hotel parking lot. These car owners will wake up to an unpleasant surprise!
All good things must end until the next time.
We had great weather and our Porsches needed to feel warm dry pavement in preparation for the driving season ahead.
Though this was a private event with friends, we still followed road safety rules while enjoying our Porsches.

German Transaxle of America, Inc
Boy, if you are a shop geek like I am you would love to stroll through the 6200 sq. feet of German Transaxle of America. The racks are loaded with spare everything involving transaxles. The floors are clean, the work benches wellorganized. It is one of those shops that exudes a long history of craftsmanship of the highest order and exactly where you would want your Porsche transaxle to be serviced.
In 2001, the then owner of GTA approached his star tech and said basically, “I am retiring and either selling the inventory off or offering the business to you.” This surprise announcement caught Ken Harvey by complete surprise and after a few deep discussions with his wife, Laurie, they decided to jump in 100%. In hindsight, what a great move.
Ken is one of the those guys who from a very young age was interested in how things worked. He received his first tractor, a John Deere pedal model while in first grade. His two brothers were military trained mechanics. In the blood. Moving to Bend as a young married man he worked, as mentioned above for GTA starting in 1988, as a nuts and bolts sorter. He has come a long way but man he can tell what size bolt you are holding up from 20 paces. GTA currently has seven employees and is known throughout the States and abroad as the number one shop for repair and rebuilding for both automatic and manual German transaxles.
Porsche, through the years, has had an interesting series of transaxles. The 356, 901, 915, G-50, Tiptronic and PDK. With the later models, those after 2010, Porsche decided basically only the dealers can repair the transaxles and very few parts are made available for the aftermarket. So Ken focuses on pre-2010 Porsches.
By the way in case you are wondering why the term ‘transaxle’ instead of ‘transmission’…The German design of the transmission includes the differential. This differs from say US designed transmissions where the differential is separate. Don’t take your Pcar to AAMCO!)
Also being German, there are a plethora of special (read expensive) tools to work on these parts. GTA has accumulated enough of these tools to service 70 years of Porsche transaxle design. Speaking of which, I was interested to know which Porsche models have the least troublesome transaxles. Without hesitation Ken placed his hand on a 915 (1972-1986 Porsche models) he was currently working on and said, “this one. It seems to be more robust and works really well. Should see 150-200K miles before any work is needed.” Well then what is the suggested maintenance an owner should do? “Definitely change (or have changed) the gear oil once a year, no matter mileage. Since not many older Porsches are driven in the winter here in CO, it makes sense to do the fluid change at the end of each summer driving season.” Ken uses the brand, BG Ultraguard 75-90 weight oil.
If you feel like your Porsche’s gearing may need service you can arrange for Ken to take it for a short drive so he can listen/feel for any problems. If any are discovered further testing will be warranted to determine cause. Entering GTA you will be greeted by the very knowledgeable Kateka Yost who will quickly be able to determine how best to service your Porsche or other German make. She knows her stuff! Rates are currently $150.00 per hour. Ken uses only brand new parts and offers a 2-year, 24K mile limited warranty on most work. GTA works on all German makes.
One of the absolute joys in this ShopLight series is meeting owners like Ken and staff like Kateka. Both love their jobs and one gets this feeling they would be doing this whether getting paid or not. Ken is a true craftsman. His favorite Porsche? 1984-1986 911 Carrera Coupe with of course the wonderful 915 transaxle. (I couldn't agree more Ken!)
This is part one of a two part series on GTA. Stay tuned.
Kateka Yost is our friendly front desk receptionist

Ken Harvey is the owner and has been rebuilding transmissions for over 25 years. Ken has established German Tranaxle of America as one of nation’s best resources for quality re-manufactured transmissions.
Laurie Harvey has been helping the business grow and develop since 1999. Laurie manages all the administration for German Transaxle of America..

HDR PCA New Logo Development
Our High Desert Region will reach its 25th anniversary in 2025. It’s a perfect time to celebrate that by refreshing our region’s logo through a redesign that will look compatible with the PCA National logo with which it will commonly be seen and will provide for easy replication across various media such as the new website, name badges, stickers, business cards/printed materials, hats/clothing, grille badges, woven patches, etc.
The HDR Board wants to make sure members are included in this process, so we need two groups of volunteers. The first group of volunteers develops candidates for the new logo, either individually or in teams, however they choose. A different group of volunteers reviews and validates the logo candidates to determine that the submissions meet these criteria developed last year: The voting process will include keeping our current logo and NO change to the existing HDR logo.
• Understated and elegant, not too complicated, and approachable
• Includes design elements that:
• communicate we are a car club
• reflect our regions uniqueness’s (landscape, culture, etc.)
• capture the spirit of the HDRPCA club and its members
• Provides clear identity information – communicates the name of the club and PCA
• Honors the spirit and heritage of the Porsche brand
Once we have a set of logo candidates developed and validated (expected to be around the end of August) members will vote and if the club selects a new logo it will be in time to adopt its use by the beginning of 2025.
If you’d like to develop a candidate for the new logo, you are welcome to get started and plan on submitting your logo candidate or candidates around mid-August. If you’d like to be part of the second group, to validate the submissions against the criteria mentioned above, please let Fred Nielsen know by the end of June.
Below is an image of our current logo as well as two candidates already developed:
