PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Jay Seeley President, High Desert Region PCA president@highdesertpca.org

I hope all of you and your families had a wonderful holiday. I’m honored and excited to serve as president of the High Desert Region for the next two years. I want to thank Fred Nielsen, Stu Malakoff, Trish Calderon and all of the other volunteers who made the past two years so successful. As we begin our 26th year, the club’s in great shape, with more than 500 members and comfortably healthy finances to build on. My fellow officers for the next two years – and brief descriptions of their broader roles – • Randy Lervold, Vice-President, has been with our region since 2022. He will be the Driving Events Chair, handling Arrives & Drives, Tech Sessions (starting next month) and an exciting new tour in May to the Lost Coast area around Eureka…lots of kurvenreiche Straßen down there! • Jeanine Faria, Treasurer, has been very involved with theclub since her late husband Fred and some others (including past President Fred Neilsen) founded HDR in 2000. She is reprising her role as Treasurer and will handle the club’s accounting, banking and regulatory needs, and brings a deep historical perspective to leadership. • Stein Nielsen, Secretary, who joined the region in 2023, will be the Social Events Chair, responsible for developing some Signature driving (multi-day) tours, Cars & Coffee, and will be actively developing new events – social and driving – that we hope will be attractive to our members who so far have been less involved in club activities. Continuing on the Board will be Hack Heyward, Technical Support Chair; Lisa Sarmiento, Safety & Insurance Chair; and Mark Taylor, Membership Chair; and Fred Nielsen, Past-President & Complaints Chair. Here’s to a healthy and happy New Year…and a long and safe 2026 driving season in the High Desert! Jay

Get ready for a high-octane, culturally rich journey across Germany with the “Germany Full Throttle” adventure (Sept 26–Oct 6, 2026). We’ll begin in the charming historic town of Speyer, where we’ll explore its medieval heart and glide through the vineyards in a vintage bus. Then, it’s pedal to the metal at the legendary Hockenheimring for an unforgettable solo drive in a Porsche—handling course and drifting included. Next up: a scenic drive through the Moselle valley to the fairytale Castle Cochem, followed by wine tasting at Schloss Lieser, and a dive into history in the Roman city of Trier and the bunkers of Fort Casso. Cruise the legendary roads of the Black Forest, tour the Porsche factory and museum, and explore automotive culture at Motorworld Böblingen. The trip finishes in style with a private morning tour of the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle, a brewery visit, and two days in lively Munich — historic walking tours, a visit to the BMW Museum, and a guided tour of the magnificent Nymphenburg Palace. Included are boutique 4-star accommodations, expert private guides, select lunches and a dinner, plus group transportation for a maximum of 20 people—ideal if you’re someone who loves speed and culture all in one amazing journey. DOWNSHIFT FEATURED ARTICLE

VOLK und PORSCHES 1973 911 T RSR Tribute Article by Andy Burke From the Porsche Newsroom: “THE 2025 PORSCHE CLASSIC CHAMPIONS ARE CROWNED. If you needed more proof that Porsche techs are some of the best in the world, here it is: the 2025 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge, a revitalization competition between Porsche Centers nationwide. Held alongside Luftgekühlt 11 in Durham NC, the Restoration Challenge brought together nine finalists from around the country, whittled down from 73 vehicle entries across 66 Porsche Centers who faced off in regional showdowns. When all was said and done, four Porsche Centers stood above the rest, taking honors in the Preservation, Restoration and Individualization categories, plus one People’s Choice award. Take a look at the winners, and remember this is the work of some of the very same hands you trust your Porsche to.

GRAND NATIONAL AND INDIVIDUAL CHAMPION-PORSCHE BEND 1973 PORSCHE 911T, RSR TRIBUTE. The team at Porsche Bend originally intended to enter this early 1970’s classic Porsche in the 2024 Classic Restoration Challenge, however once teardown began, it became obvious they had something truly special on their hands. Technicians reimagined the body with steel RSR fender flares, shaped and welded to create the striking wide-body silhouette. While preparing the body for its return to original , vibrant Viper Green finish, painters preserved the factory look. Inside, they handcrafted houndstooth inlays for the custom “S” dash trim, RS-style door cards and 964 RS America door pulls-also wrapped in houndstooth. Power for the unique sports car comes from a 2.8L engine built from a Porsche Classic “8R” case, paired with a modern fuel injection system. Producing over 280 horsepower, it is paired with a modified 915 gearbox featuring a limited slip differential, optimized to match the engine’s output. Inspired by the Matchbox cars they loved as children, the technicians set out to create a real life version of their childhood dreams. What they created was more than a recreation-it is a celebration of Porsche heritage and a testament to what is possible when vision, craftsmanship and timing come together.”

Ok thank you Porsche newsroom for an excellent summary of the 2025 event. Now, courtesy of Mike Tessen, let's get a little background on Porsche Bend’s RSR Tribute build and competition. The donor car was a locally owned 1973 T. ( A 2.4-liter, aircooled flat-six engine model with the then new 915 transaxle, the T was the base model 911 in 1973.) One goal in this effort was to celebrate the ’73 T while doing a very special RSR spec build. (Roughly 50 1973 Carrera 2.8L RSR cars were built for racing. 176 pounds lighter than the Carrera RS and close to 100 additional horsepower the RSR was an awesome race car.) You might think doing a ’73 RS build would be a natural but Mike wanted to “up the game” by going with the much rarer RSR.

One of the requirements of this competition was every car had to use Porsche parts-no aftermarket anything allowed. So if you have ever restored an old air cooled P-car, you know the time and expense sourcing pieces and parts much less having to stick with Porsche parts. It is good to have Porsche connections! Steve Byers, Porsche Bend’s Classic Manager took on the build, spending one year to bring a driver up to a very special one-off championship winner. Just a masterful job Steve and Mike!

After winning the Area West division in Monterey, the Porsche Bend RSR Tribute was carefully packed in a trailer and driven to Durham, North Carolina for the competition. A well-known fact is Durham, NC is on EST and this tidbit will crop up soon enough in our story. The 2025 finals for the Restoration Challenge consisted of the three winners from the earlier preliminary competition-Area West, Area South-Central and Area East-and was held in Durham this past October in conjunction with Luftgekühit 11.

To fly from RDM to Durham is a challenge at any time but to arrive at night, get transferred to the wrong hotel and wake up the next morning at 5 AM (2 AM PST) to start prep on the newly arrived RSR Tribute was a test of character for Mike. Additionally, Steve was on a long planned vacation in Ireland and was trying to make his way to Durham for the finals. Our two fellas were jet lagged and tired! But pumped. The task was to prep the newly arrived and dirty RSR for concours level competition. Once completed Mike had to drive the car to the display area and was necessary to take to the sidewalks of Durham to get there. Once in place for the judging, cleaning and detailing was again required. Being held at the same location as Luftgekühit 11 meant swarms of curious folks stopped by to chat Mike and Steve up about the car. Nerves, combined with little sleep certainly added to the excitement. Judging is by every attendee so answering questions is an important part of the competition. According to Mike, the other two cars representing the different regions were “perfect.” When Mike, completely exhausted, felt he could have easily laid down on the pavement and slept, he spotted a rainbow. He felt all tenseness in his body relax. He and Steve had done their best and now results were in other hands.

This is a good time to check out the attached 4:00 video if you haven’t done so already. We at Downshift and the HDRPCA family congratulate Mike, Steve and the entire Kendall Porsche Bend group for an amazing showing and wins at the Porsche Classic Championship. Remember Central Oregon is a small market and to have achieved such lofty status in the Porsche world is truly a worthy accomplishment for Porsche Bend. And lastly…This RSR Tribute 2.8 will stay right here in Central Oregon at the Kendall Porsche Bend campus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UePdG-mMa2k

Porsche Bend Service Department ShopLight by Andy Burke

I really enjoyed delving into the history of the Porsche dealerships in Bend. I may have missed something and if so please let me know. As many of you are aware the present site of the dealership evolved from a combination grocery store/VW dealership (!) in the 1950s to MidOregon Motors to Tom Anderson’s Carrera Motors in 1982. Mr. Anderson sold the dealership to the Kendall Auto Group in 2014. In addition to selling and servicing all models of Porsche, the Porsche Classic Bend division offers service and restorations on older model Porsches (and other marques).

As the ShopLight column focuses on service for Porsche cars, I interviewed longtime HDRPCA friend and Kendall Porsche’s Fixed Operations Director Mike Tessen for this article.

Rates-All rates at Kendall Porsche are determined by Porsche. That said the hourly rate is approx. $289.00 per hour. Mike has an enormous database he refers to when pricing out a job. All HDRPCA Members receive 10% off parts and service up to $500.00. How sweet is that? Despite Mike’s telling me the shop was not in great shape it appeared pretty immaculate. Floors were spotless, tools and equipment all in place. As expected from a Porsche dealership the shop was equipped with the latest Porsche equipment and tools to service the wide variety of Porsche models sold by the dealership. Mike estimates he spends $7.2K a month in software and updates. He has seen a 500% increase in tool costs of late. Porsche Bend recently added a $15K headlight aiming tool specifically for LED headlights. Both body work and paint are referred to local shops the dealership has worked with for years.

It seems Porsche is looking well into the future with EV powered automobiles. Service departments such as Mike’s must keep up with a rapidly changing motor train. The wrench cranking mechanic must quickly become a highly skilled electronic and computer savvy technician, able to quickly diagnose and correct a runaway herd of electrons. Constant training of techs is a huge part of Mike’s job. Community involvement-Kendall Porsche under the umbrella of Kendall Cares does an enormous amount of community outreach. Too extensive to list here. Check out the company’s website covering their generosity: www.kendallgivesback.com. Very impressive. Mike is planning to add more Porsche techs. There are four levels of Porsche technician-Certified, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level requires a rigorous amount of classroom and hands-on training. Approval for advancement is determined by dealer managers and eventually PCNA in Atlanta. Mike refers to this process as “a most complicated and in-depth training in today’s automobile servicing industry.”

Favorite Porsche-Mike chuckled when I sprang this question on him. “Wow some are not going to like one of my answers,” he said. “One favorite has to be the 550 Spyder. The body lines. The history.” (Note: Of course a 1955 550 Spyder was a storied race car from the 1950s and was made infamous as the car actor James Dean was killed in on a Californian road in 1955) “I think the 924GTS is an engineering marvel and the 2005 Carrera GT just scares the hell out of me-from a driving and service point. That car demands the utmost respect.”

Not only is Bend native Mike Tessan a Gold Certified Master Tech and Kendall Porsche’s Fixed Operations Director he is an active car racer in his modified 1984 944for the Lucky Dog Racing circuit. (https://www.racelucky.com). Cars for this series of endurance races must be 15 years or older. Your correspondent’s reading of the website, associated posts and conversation with Mike reveal a racing series steeped in fun and fellowship. HDRPCA members certainly understand such a credo.

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE PORSCHES IT’S ABOUT THE PUPPIES! Peaches and Porsha A monthly feature by Audrey Moore

Frank and Camille Mendoza, with Peaches the English Crème and Porsha the 1965 356 SC in Ivory Frank and Camille Mendoza adopted a puppy 7 years ago from a breeder in Madras, Oregon. Truth be known, Frank and Camille didn’t pick Peaches, Peaches picked Frank. It was when Peaches sat on Frank’s foot that sealed the deal… They soon found out how special Peaches is. She watches T.V. on her own, loves the beach, and Frank says he specially loves her because she looks just like his 1964 356 SC Coupe. Same color, same speed and same loyalty! Talking about cars and Porsches….Peaches is definitely a manual production as she loves manual touches. She is certainly an air-cooled Porsche, as her coat is so thick she always needs air conditioning. Talk about performance, she is certainly best at cornering which gives her the ability to excel at her zoomies! Peaches is very loyal to her sister the 356. But we don’t know about Frank. If he had to choose between a Puppy or a Porsche, it’s “Oh… I wouldn’t want to make that decision.” Now we know!

5 Porsches To Mt. Bachelor Photos by Eric Peterson Friday December 12th was a perfect sunny day for 5 air cooled guys to drive up to Mt Bachelor. Porsche rated roads led this group to a mountain that was still lacking enough snow to open the ski resort.

SkidCar Training

Deschutes County SkidCar Training is an all-weather driver enhancement program taught with the aid of the SKIDCAR System. The SKIDCARframework attaches to the suspension of a vehicle to allow the front and rear tires to be lifted or lowered independently with a controller. The system allows drivers to experience the inclement driving conditions that cause a vehicle to lose traction in a safe and controlled learning environment. The course costs $100.00 and is available through Deschutes County Risk Management and sponsored by the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners. Training includes one hour of classroom instruction followed by three hours of hands-on driving in the vehicle. The instructor will cover various techniques, including proper eye placement, acceleration, braking, steering, weight and energy management, as well as proper tire decisions and maintenance. Participants will learn the proper use of anti-lock braking systems and understand the differences between rear wheel drive, front wheel drive and four wheel drive systems, as well as Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control in modern vehicles. Participants will also learn about skid prevention, control and recovery. https://www.deschutes.org/administration/page/skidcar-training carevents@highdesertpca.org (Mike Simmons)
