I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season and that you are looking forward to an activity filled HDR-PCA year.

You all received an email listing the new Board of Directors for the Club. I am extremely pleased with the new board and thank those members who volunteered to step up and assume the responsibility of representing your Club. The Club exists for the sole purpose of providing opportunities and experiences to the membership and your new board understands that and is anxious to fulfill those duties.

We have an action plan for 2024 which includes completing the Website using the Club Express platform and developing a social media presence, continuing to provide the activities we all enjoy such as Arrive and Drives for the general membership, the air-cooled/classic cars, and SUVs. We also have plans for autocross and track events, tech sessions, cars and coffee, a variety of tours, and many social events. We expect this to be a fun-filled and safe year with heavy member participation.

With all that said, the most important thing is for members to understand that the Board is here for you and will be transparent on all matters. We want your feedback on the activities we provide, and those that we don’t provide, so that we can make the Club events as enjoyable as possible for you.

Beginning January 1, the Downshift will be published monthly. In the February issue, we will include a yearly plan and a listing of activities and their tentative dates for long-term planning. Even though we have a plan, there is room for you to make additions and modifications.

In my many years of PCA membership, I have been in six different regions and have found none that compare to the High Desert Region in the activities provided and, most important, the friendships shared by its members. We want to continue to build on that concept resulting in a unified, fun Club.

NEW TO THE HDR-PCA BOARD Hello fellow HDRPCA members, my name is Trish Calderon.

As most of you know, I am the incoming Secretary for the HDRPCA. I’m fairly new to the club and brand new to the board. I have worked in the automotive repair industry since 2005. I learned about cars by being hands-on while owning a repair shop. Many of you are also hands-on with your vehicles, and I enjoy talking with you to learn what you have done on your Porsches.

I look forward to growing as a club member, and us growing as a club. My hope is that we can revive excitement within the club that will shine through at events and attract new members. I’m looking forward to working alongside the new board to help make this club something that everyone wants to be a part of. I appreciate the members that have shown me a warm welcome, and I look forward to getting to know you all further.

Greg Domantay, Car Non-Moving Events I moved to Bend 3 1/4 years ago from Chicago sight unseen. I have traded Skyscrapers for Mountains and have not looked back. I bought my 1st Porsche, a 1986 944 Coupe in 1990 and it still is a great looking car. Since then, I have acquired a 2014 Cayenne diesel and a 2011 Boxster Spyder, we will see what’s next? I am looking forward to my continue enjoyment in organizing Cars and Coffee and other non moving car events.

Also, thanks to John Sturmark, Alan Fuller and Jim Holmes for all there help and wisdom. I look forward to getting to know more of our members and creating great progress and a Bright future for HDRPCA. Bonus points if you can identify the Architectural Building in the background.

VOLK UND PORSCHES A Barn and a Porsche

1972 Porsche 914 2.0 Vin #4272901123 914 owners are a curious bunch. I think it takes a special person to embrace the ugly duckling. My dad bought and upgraded a ’70 914-6 when I was in high school. As a family we quickly then bought a 72 race car and all 3 of us kids bought ’73 2.0’s. We sill have the race car.

I wrecked my Phoenix Red 14 in my 20’s and sold it. I honestly didn’t care if I ever owned one again and eventually bought a Boxster S after the kids left the house. However, my oldest son bought a black ’73 and was persistent I “needed” one. I was looking for an air cooled 911! Well eventually Parker sent me a Craigslist ad of an ugly maroon barn find in Salem and said it was a desirable factory color; Ravenna green. Next thing I know I have a low mileage barn find 914 sitting on my trailer. The car was parked in 1988 with typical fuel injection issues with just 26,000 original miles.

Parker quickly realized the car had a rare option of vinyl A Pillar.

Our car is a 1973 model, titled as a 1972. It is an early 2.0 car. Early cars didn’t have the 1973 US mandated door safety bars and this car has extremely rare vinyl wrapped A pillars. We believe this car could be the “All Weather Porsche “ in the magazine ad. It’s also one of the early cars Porsche marketed as a 914s. The “S” designation quickly went away since 911 We then realized it was going to be a project, but also desired to keep it as original as possible. My good friend Cary Cutter at Middle Motors would run quarterback as I did a lot of the menial work and he would do the technical.

This is our maiden voyage after Cary and Ben Martin did final assembly and went through every aspect of the car down to dash lights, etc. Photo is Parker with the original owner.

The car is an absolute blast to drive and reliable. Even with 70 series tires, it can get through corners way quicker then my 997. We drove the car around Bend for shake down runs and then set out for Brookings for a 914 rally. We had a minor break down on the way home with our Petronix ignition giving out and stranding us on the side of the road. After we were unable to get a new set in White City I recalled my late friend Cary mentioning he had put a set of old school points in the glove box for just such an event. It was specail way to have a connection with a good friend we tragically lost. The points got us home.

My car was then accepted to be in Luft 6 and we quickly made plans to rally with Rothsport racing.

Somehow the little 2.0 kept up with the group and even passed the 964 Turbo on some twisty back country roads. ​We did hold up the pack out of Reno when the car vapor locked 2x. We were running it pretty hard and it did not like Californian Ethanol fuel. Cary’s suggestions of moving the fuel pump to the front still ringing in my head……

We laid over in Mammoth Lakes for the night. As we went to leave in the morning I noticed my trunk was open and there were cookie wrappers and garbage laying behind the car. A bear broke into the trunk during the night and ate the flat of Costco cookies we had brought. It somehow was able to push the little button to get the trunk open and lifted it without a scratch. It was unsuccessful in opening my commemorative bottle of The Falls gin #914, but it sure tried! ​

We were also honored to have the car accepted to be displayed at Rennsport #7 in the PCA colors booth.

Notice there is no photo of it at RR7. That’s a another story!

Fun With Old Man Winter

There are three main options for your Porsche in the winter. I’ll concisely discuss the highlights of each below. #1 Driving your Porsche in the winter regardless of conditions In my opinion, if you want to be the safest you can be on winter roads, winter (ie snow/ice) tires are the answer. Remember that your tires are the only component keeping your vehicle in contact with the road. Your Ultra High Performance summer tires that grip the tarmac with tread temperatures of ~180°F are incompetent in winter as their tread compound becomes like "hard plastic" below 32°F. Specific winter tires deliver much better cold weather, snow and ice performance than All-Season tires because their tread designs are more open and have deeper tread depths for better grip, and the tread compounds are softer and remain pliable even in extremely cold temperatures.

It's also important to note that the advancements in electronic driver aids such as PSM (Porsche Stability Management), ABS, ASR/traction control, etc, don't actually provide more traction. They only help prevent drivers from over braking or overpowering the currently available traction of the tires. A driver can't be in control of a vehicle unless they have traction, and the only thing they can do to increase traction, to actually get more grip and control, is install the most appropriate tires for the conditions. Winter tires help provide that in the winter season.

#2 Driving your Porsche in the winter if the weather cooperates As discussed above, since your tires are what keep your vehicle in contact with the ground, maintaining correct tire pressure is always imperative. The tire pressure recommended in your vehicle's owner’s manual or on the driver door jamb placard is a "cold" pressure, so it should be checked in the morning before you drive more than a few miles. If you park in a garage, you will also lose some pressure when you leave its warmth and venture into the cold outside. This is because for every 10degF change in outside temp, your tire's pressure will change by about 1psi (up with higher and down with lower temps). So, add 1psi of "cold" tire pressure to compensate for each 10degF reduction in ambient temp.

After you’ve filled your tires with air, don't forget to re-install your valve stem caps. If left off, moisture can freeze in the valve and allow the air to escape.

#3 Hibernation/storage for your Porsche There are many questions about which fluids to change before or after hibernation.

The choice depends a lot on the fluid type, if the vehicle will be in a climatecontrolled garage, the geographical location and exterior temps, and the duration of hibernation.

Regarding engine oil, thankfully here in Central Oregon we have a drier climate than over in the valley. However, since any condensation that builds up in the engine crankcase is unwanted, having your engine oil changed before hibernation is NOT recommended and is a disservice to your vehicle and your pocketbook, as condensation can accumulate over the winter. It’s better to put your Porsche away with the engine oil as it is (the heavy corrosion of engine internals due to dirty oil left inside the engine for months on end is usually an old wives’ tale), and then get an oil change in the spring when you start driving it again, so that the oil is fully fresh and has no condensation.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic which means it gathers some moisture from the air over time, and moisture can lead to a squishier brake pedal. Thus, brake fluid should also be changed after hibernation, NOT before, so that the moisture is limited when you start driving the vehicle again.

For watercooled Porsches, you’ll want to make sure that the engine coolant mixture is protecting below 32degF. Be sure to completely fill your fuel tank before hibernation. This will save your fuel system from any oxidation and will also displace any possible moisture that may currently be in the system. Adding a fuel system stabilizer like Stabil is not a bad idea; follow their instructions as it may require taking a short drive afterwards.

Most batteries do not winter well at all. The best solution is a special type of battery charger called a battery maintainer/tender. We highly recommend the CTEK brand as it’s well engineered and is a true smart maintainer. It knows how long to charge the battery and when to turn off, so that the battery isn’t overcharged. It’s also the same brand Porsche and other manufacturers private label as their own. One other detail to note; always lock your vehicle even if it’s stored in a garage. Especially for newer vehicles, this will allow the computer modules to fully go to sleep (less battery drain) vs being in a snooze position (more battery drain) waiting for you to open a door.

If the vehicle is parked outside, it’d be prudent to open the engine lid to ward off rodents, and also lay out a few rodent traps. Do not use rodent poison, for they can ingest it and then crawl into the nether regions of your vehicle, causing a big stink!

Finally, some of you may be wondering if, every few weeks, you should start your vehicle and allow it to idle for a period of time. Starting the vehicle, letting it idle for 1015min, and then shutting it off is not recommended. That short start/idle/shutdown procedure will not allow the engine to reach optimal operating temperature like driving the vehicle for more than 30min will, so any contaminants in the system wouldn’t be burned off in that 10-15min.

However you choose to enjoy your Porsche this winter, stay warm, drive to arrive, and give a wave or smile to a stranger. Happy Porsche’ing!!!

Thomas 'TJ' Tomjack Aug. 25,1942 - Dec. 1, 2023

Thomas "TJ" Tomjack passed away the morning of Dec. 1, 2023.

Tom endured a 10-year battle with Parkinsons and dementia, encouraging others by saying "You play the cards you've been dealt."

As a member of the HDR Bend Porsche club, Tom loved touring the northwest, exploring backroads, and sampling wineries and restaurants.
