PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Fred Nielsen, President, High Desert Region PCA president@highdesertpca.org
As I sit here in the dead of winter with a foot of snow on the ground, I realize to most of us the only Porsche we will be driving for the next few days, weeks, or months will be called a Macan or Cayenne. I say that realizing that when I was out today, I saw a Cayman zipping along Mt. Washington, seemingly having no problems with the roads. Even though winter is here, the Club does have plans to involve HDR members. In what I call the line functions of the Club: moving car, stationary car, tours and social activities; the next three to four months include Club dinners, cars and coffee (yes, Greg plans to continue holding them as social events on the third Sunday of the month), and tech sessions. The first tech session is being held on February 3rd which will be a very interesting explanation and demonstration of the only dry ice cleaning system in Central Oregon (more on that later in this issue). Beginning in April, we will hold our first Arive and Drive for SUVs with regular and classic Arrive and Drives beginning in May. We have a variety of tours on the schedule beginning with a Kentucky Derby Tour on May 4th at Tracy Stout’s, followed up with some day tours, which include a drive and dinner, and at least one 2- to 3-day tours in the early spring. A schedule of those events for the first few months is included in this issue. Also included in this issue (page 44) is an income reconciliation showing the financial condition of the Club as of January 1, 2024. We will show members a midyear and year-end reconciliation so members can see the funds raised and spent during the year. This is members’ money and we will conserve your funds and spend it for the benefit of Club members. We started January with a great members’ dinner featuring Baldy’s Barbecue and it was nice seeing all the interest and enthusiasm of the members who attended. We hope to continue this trend with the February tech session. Fred

DOWNSHIFT PUBLICATION SCHEDULE 2024 Published every month First of every month Article Deadline 5th of each month
NEW TO THE HDR-PCA BOARD I joined the newly formed High Desert Region PCA club in 2000 after moving to Bend from Washington state. Finding so many Porsche owners in one place was exactly what I was looking for and soon I had become club treasurer and then President. I had brought my 1985 Porsche 911 coupe with Kathy and I enjoying all the Porsche activities the club offered.
Mike Simmons, Car Center - Moving. I purchased a 911 track car and added track day events to my Porsche driving experiences and after becoming a PCA certified HPDE driving instructor I went down the slippery slope of race track addiction. Enjoying all aspects of driving a Porsche has been my passion for many years. I was asked to lead the drives around Central Oregon for the current High Desert BOD and I am looking forward to helping others enjoy their Porsche as much as I enjoy mine. I hope to see you on one of the many drives the HDRPCA has planned for the 2024 driving season whether it's a classic air cooled, water cooled or SUV. Mike Simmons, Car Center - Moving.
Stu Malakoff, V.P. I moved from NJ to Bend in 2018 with my wife, Vicky, to be closer to my son (the oldest of my 3 adult children). We don’t plan to move again! As a long-time car enthusiast, I was thrilled to purchase my first Porsche - an ‘06 997 C4S - in Spring 2020. Vicky and I made some fast friends at HDRPCA, and one of those friendships led to the purchase two years ago of my forever car, an Arrow Blue ‘21 718 Spyder.
I’d like to see our club thrive well into the future and, as VP, have the opportunity to better understand the priorities of our members and then work towards making them happen. I am also interested in creating awareness among Central Oregon Porsche owners who are not club members, with the objective of growing both our membership ranks and engagement. Stu Malakoff

DOWNSHIFT FEATURED ARTICLE
VOLK UND PORSCHES by Brad Danger Chapter 1: The Unassuming Beginning In 2013, this then seven year old Porsche 911 was purchased with the full intent of leaving things just the way Porsche meant them to be - obsessively maintained using only the finest parts, to be enjoyed as the premiere daily drivable sports car. To leave everything the way it was when it left the factory in 2006. Bone stock. (famous last words right?!) Having owned a 1985 3.2 Carrera through college and grad school as my only mode of transportation, like so many of us I had simply fallen in love with a flat six engine situated in the ‘wrong’ place in the chassis - which had the side effect of teaching me quickly how to, and how NOT to drive. Fast forward to 2013 and the 997 - it was supposed to be a completely unmodified daily driver. Until in 2017, when I pitched my best friend a pretty crazy idea. “Let’s road trip the 997 to Vegas to participate in SEMA and hit the Gold Rush Rally while we’re at it”
Chapter 2: The Call to Adventure What started as a straight shot drive to Sin City, grew into nothing short of a full fledged automotive adventure. Having just started a YouTube channel, we loosely mapped out a 40 day road trip to 9 states, over 7,000 miles… complete with the challenge to film and document every single day of it. To prep the car we fabricated and installed a custom mounted roof box for practicality. Lower, more aggressive springs because we forgot we were going through Montana and Wyoming. Some lightning-fast green racing stripes inspired by the 911 R, a ‘situational awareness device’ (as Valentine One calls it) - a countermeasure and a requirement due to extra power added by those lightning-fast green racing stripes, and oh - Because we were going to LIVE in the 911, additional power to charge our electronics and electric blankets. Which we promptly forgot to bring. We went fly fishing in Montana. Encountered Bison and Bears in Yellowstone. We met and rallied with Akira Nakai from LA to Vegas - partied with Magnus Walker, and not one time did the 911 skip a beat!
Chapter 3: The Crossroads Post-trip, I challenged myself to learn how to vinyl wrap a car, and once complete really thought the party was over for the 997. See, it had been a great car, but I had just picked up a 996 C4S with a freshly installed 4 liter (thanks bore score) and with the new toy, the 997 just sat. Then it dawned on me… I had always wanted to Safari that ‘85 911, but never had the funds. Could you Safari a watercooled 911?! After countless nights of some intense googling, the short answer was no. Not really. So after taking some measurements I reached out to friends at Pelican Parts and presented them with a hypothetical parts list to lift the car - parts that up until that email, were initially designed to lower cars, but what goes down must come up, right? They challenged me to build a Safari waterpumper in less than a year, and informed me if I could pull it off I’d have a feature spot at multiple shows across Monterey California during Monterey Car Week, including Werks Reunion. I was determined, and with my buddy Trouble helping me work my way through too many trial and error nights, we somehow managed to squeeze in a set of 16” Fuchs and lift it over 3 inches using mainly parts that typically help you lower your 996/997. My favorite color has always been pink, and I’ve always loved the Martini livery, so using that as inspiration we created a one off design that matches the build itself.
The car was finished less than a week before Monterey Car Week, and after countless late night tweaks I drove it to California grinning from ear to ear like a crazed maniac. Man, I couldn’t wipe that smirk off my face. The feeling of the unknown and adventure this build gave me, was so similar to the feelings I had experienced on the 40 day adventure years earlier, in the same exact car. The car was a huge hit at Monterey, and it drew huge crowds at every parking lot, autocross and car show it was featured at. We ran into Magnus at Werks, who said “Boy, Dirt Don’t Slow You Down, Does It?!” You know, he’s right.. It speeds me up!
Snow and tow
It was after that interaction, that I realized the reason I look up to people like Mr. Walker is because he took one look at the book on traditional restoration methods and threw it out - and instead, infuses his own style and character into his cars. This Safari build carries with it my own style and character every single mile it logs, and to me it’s the ideal 911. It’s funny. They say never meet your heroes, and after 10 years and over 80,000 miles down the open road, it’s because of this humbley optioned C2 - a rolling lump of glass, rubber and metal that I’ve had the opportunity to meet more than a few of mine. Sometimes the adventures and experiences you have along the way can be more meaningful than just reaching your final destination… but I gotta tell you, there’s nothing quite like doing it in a Porsche!
“It’s not just the cars…….it’s the people”

Shoplight By Andy Burke
Preserve Auto LLC
Some of you may remember a series we did several years ago entitled ‘Shoplight.’ The idea was to showcase various Porsche related shops in Central Oregon. It was inspiring to visit each shop and understand both the trials and joys these entrepreneurs were experiencing. As far as I know the companies we highlighted are still going strong and providing excellent service for our wonderful cars. So this is a special 2024 edition of ‘Shoplight’ with the focus on an incredibly interesting and exciting technology-dry ice blasting-coming our way via the tireless efforts of Clay Cahoon, Dan Keeton and their new shop, Preserve Auto LLC.

At an early age, Clay was drawn to automobiles courtesy of a friend’s father who specialized in working on MGs. Clay joined his high school’s auto club then journeyed to Sacramento to attend UTI. After graduating, he returned to SLC and worked for the Porsche/Audi dealer becoming an Audi Master Tech before branching out, working at a repair facility focusing on high end sports cars such as Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Porsches. After settling in Bend and working for a few shops Clay started a van conversion business finding plenty of work but not the level of emotional satisfaction he got working on more detailed auto projects. Thus Preserve Auto was born offering a very unique service here in CO.
Here is a short explanation of dry ice blasting/cleaning: basically soft dry ice pellets (a solid form of carbon dioxide) are blasted at an extremely high speed from a single hose onto a wide variety of surfaces. (and since we are a car based club we will stick to how dry icing is used to clean vehicles.) The very low temperature of -109.3F and variable speed of the dry ice pellets force any material on the surface to immediately dissipate from stress and thermal shock. And as you can see from the linked video, this process is not only effective on metal but on material such as door cards, vinyl, Alcantra, vents, headliners, carpets, seatbelts, etc. One very interesting factor here is the dry ice blasting does not create secondary waste or chemical residues. There is no clean-up of the blasting medium (dry ice) as it no longer exists. Only clean up is the material removed from the surface. This can be easily swept up.
I did a short interview with Clay as he was busy applying the final touches to his shop: Q: How did you first hear of the dry ice cleaning process? A: Several local Porsche owners mentioned dry ice detailing to me in casual conversation a couple of years ago. I was intrigued, did a lot of research and here we are. Q: What training is required? A: I trained in Florida earlier this year at the Drycenation headquarters. Q: What other services will Preserve Auto offer? A: PPF, Ceramic coating, undercoating, any small maintenance work noticed and approved by client while doing the cleaning. Q: What is the process for having my car dry ice blasted? A: We set up a time with the client to put the car on a lift to determine how extensive he/she wants to go with the cleaning. We will discuss various options for a post-cleaning undercoating. This evaluation will be done at no charge. It is important to understand we are approaching this as preservation, not restoration. The joy in dry ice cleaning for me is the instant gratification of taking the vehicle back to the way it looked leaving the factory. Q: If my older 911 still has the cosmoline, how can that be preserved while dry icing the undercarriage? A: We can simply do a lighter pressure while cleaning to maintain the original cosmoline.
It is extremely exciting to have this option available here in CO operated by gentlemen as capable as Clay and Dan. Clay’s innate knowledge of how things work and his amazing calmness when addressing a project or doing the actual work provides all of the encouragement an owner would need to know he/she has made the correct decision in choosing Preserve Auto. In previous editions of Shoplight, business owners were kind enough to provide HDPCA members with a special offer. In this case Clay will detail the engine bay free of charge with a full dry ice cleaning service.

Holy Grail of Porsches Mindless Thoughts of Ken Moore High Desert Region members know Fred Nielsen as our newly elected club president. Many members also know Fred as an avid 356 afficionado and leader of the air-cooled group. Fred is very proud of his beautifully restored and maintained 356s, which he frequently drives and can be seen at most club driving events. His unparalleled passion for 356s piqued my curiosity. The multiple garages under his lovely home provides a virtual maze of Porsches and related memorabilia. A person can get happily lost exploring this grotto of Porsches. And that is exactly what happened. During a recent visit, Audrey and Pat discussed Native American artifacts; I was simply shut out. Fred had found a vintage issue of Panorama and was engrossed in reading about rebuilding a 1960 windshield wiper motor. Shut out again. That left me and the overly affectionate Jordan, Fred’s resident Porsche guard dog. One Milk Bone later, I was again shut out. And so down to the subterranean Palace of Porsches I ventured. . . Coupes, Cabriolets, Speedsters, Roadsters. All pristine and perfect. Testimony to the pursuit of perfection and preservation of vehicles of historical significance. As I wandered through the catacombs of engineering wonderment, in the repository of vintage Porsche parts I stumbled upon…….. a dark corner with a mysterious door. It looked completely out of place. Of course, I was curious.
The door looked like the entrance to Fort Knox. Locks up high, locks down low, dead bolts next to electronic locks, all unlocked. My curiosity was firing on all six turbo charged cylinders. The door easily swung open, and I was hit was a draft of cool air, scented with hints of gasoline, motor oil, and old leather. Even in the dark, one could sense a large cavern. My iPhone provided a faint light, and I found a bank of light switches. I flipped the switches, and my jaw fell open. I had found it! The mythical Porsche graveyard, where well driven and worn-out Porsches go to be resurrected or plundered for parts. A wall stacked with 356s, six high, and row upon row. Cabriolets, Speedsters, Coupes, Roadsters. They are all here. I had stumbled upon the Holy Grail of Porsches. And all this time, it was hiding right in the middle of Bend, Oregon, under the doting care of our humble leader. I realized I was in a special place, almost sacred. I turned off the lights, closed the door, and headed upstairs past the very happy and dozing Jordan
With Fred’s reading glasses low on his nose, he put down the old, worn Panorama, satisfied with new windshield wiper motor knowledge. “What did you see?” he asked. “Something thoroughly amazing” I replied. “Is that real?” Fred smiled and winked. “Seeing is believing, but, sometimes, the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.” Now I understand. I had actually ridden the Porsche Polar Express. I believe
