PRESIDENTSMESSAGE

president@highdesertpca.org

As all of you know, this is our Club's 25th Birthday and throughout the year we will celebrate its anniversary. The actual first day of the Club's existence was April 29, 2000. We had initially intended to celebrate the event in April or May of this year, but due several circumstances, we have decided to hold the celebration in conjunction with the New Members Picnic on July 26. One factor in this decision is we wanted to hold the event in a special location and felt there was no better location than Tracy Stout's Wildwood Ranch and she and Michael have enthusiastically agreed to allow the Club to use their property for this occasion. Thank you, Tracy and Michael.

We intend to have our cars displayed, live music and good food to celebrate the event. Our hope is to invite some of our founding members, who are no longer Club members, as our guests.

We start our 25th year with a new Club logo which the members overwhelmingly selected late last year. This new Club logo will be on display along with apparel, such as new hats and shirts displaying the new logo. This merchandise will soon be available for purchase by club members. New name tags supporting the new logo are also available with the Club subsidizing half the cost of the new name tag. If you haven't ordered yours already, Mark Taylor, Membership Chair, can help you with this.

Not only is our Club celebrating a notable anniversary, but PCA is also celebrating its 70th birthday this year and as part of the event has commissioned a sleek new logo. If you have not seen it already, you will soon see it on their correspondence.

If you haven't reserved the date already, mark your calendar and hold July 26 to join your Club members in enjoying a fun-packed day.

Arrive and Drive (A&D) - Classic Car Group (CCG)

There will be no registration or fee for these drives and no directions will be handed out for the drives. We will have separate arrive drives for Porsche SUV owners and separate Saturday Arrive and Drive events. We will also have separate Classic Car Group Arrive and Drives for air cooled and early transaxle Porsches.

There will be several requirements from the participants to make these group drives fun and successful and we are asking for your help to keep these events enjoyable. We will be starting our drives from locations outside Bend and they will be different for each monthly drive

Arrive and Drive Rules:

All of the Arrive and Drive events are group drives and will be two to three hours in length on the beautiful roads of Central Oregon.

(1) Since these are group drives and we will be obeying all safety and speed laws all participants are expected to stay together as a group, this includes drive leaders and drive sweeps.

(2) This is not a race and there will be no passing of other cars in our group.

(3) The participants are required to keep the car behind them in sight and also to keep the pace of the car in front The drivers will be required to wait for the car behind them at intersections and corners to insure we stay together as a group The lead cars will slow or pull over to wait for the cars to remain together and keep everyone in sight so we can continue as a group.

(4) There is no rubber banding allowed and if you want to drive faster or slower than the group please remember this is a group drive and you will be asked to maintain the group pace.

(5) If you are not comfortable with these rules then please don't keep the other participants from enjoying the drives we have planned.

HDRPCA Member Profile

Our HDR member Ellen moved to Sunriver in 2016 and has been a recent member for about three years.

I first met Ellen in 2024 on an Air Cooled Porsche drive. Ellen invited me to ride along with her and I soon discovered her driving skills were excellent, she knows how to drive! The sunroof was open and it was chilly but fun drive. Ellen has an enthusiastic presence about her Porsche and life in general.

Ellen received her Targa as a birthday gift 24 years ago. The engine was rebuilt at 169,000 miles. The odometer was fixed twice and now broken again at 179,000 miles. D O W N S H I F T F E A T U R E D

The custom ““Whale Tail” was the result of hiding damage from backing up.

The frunk always includes extra motor oil to top off as needed.

Ellen was asked what is her connection to her Targa, her response was “Fun car to drive”.

ShopLight Mountain View Imports

How great is it to visit a shop under the successful guidance of the 2nd generation?

When I walked into Mountain View Imports’ reception area, owner Jon McGillivray was explaining to a customer in a very relaxed manner how best to address an oil leak the gentleman’s Subaru was experiencing. Both men were seated and Jon was sketching out the steps he would take to correct the leak. The happy customer gave me a thumbs up as he left the shop. That my friends is personalized service.

Jon’s father, Hugh from the late ‘70s until his retirement in 2015 was the go to guy for air cooled Porsche and VW repair in Central Oregon. Jon worked in his Dad’s business (learning that Porsche 911s were ‘cool’) throughout high school while also participating in a school sponsored auto maintenance program. After graduating, Jon branched out to other businesses in metal fabrication and welding before heading back to Mountain View to work again with his Dad in 2012.

Today the shop has two full-time techs, one part timer and of course Jon who continues to handle air cooled 911s. All other European makes are wrenched on as well as Japanese or Korean models. Beyond air cooled 911s, Mountain View services a large number of water cooled Porsche SUVs like the Cayenne, Macan and sedans such as the Panamera.

As a side venture Jon and his brother repair/build-out and modify Polaris side by sides. Being totally ignorant about these off road vehicles I was floored when Jon told me top speeds for some of the side by sides model. Some with a top speed exceeding my 911’s! ‘nough said. So if you need some mechanical help or repair with you Polaris head his way.

The shop’s vibe is relaxed due in great part to Service Manager’s Alyssa’s cool, commanding presence. With a strong history of auto buildouts with her Dad and on her own, Alyssa knows her stuff. She loves her current X3 and helping Mountain View’s customers keep their vehicles in tip top shape. In having several of my vehicles serviced over the last 6 years at Mountain View I can clearly state Alyssa has exemplified a high degree of professionalism, one that gives confidence when handing over the keys of a beloved vehicle. (See accompanying article)

Oh I almost forgot…While you are waiting in the reception area for a ride you can check out the stack of early 60’s era Foreign Car Guide magazines. A customer donated these amazing time capsules to Mountain View for customer perusal. Enjoy!

ShopLight Shoplight Bonus-Shop Etique

Maybe you looked at the unusual title of this essay before reading it and thought, ‘etiquette for a shop? Who needs etiquette for a shop that works on my cars?’ Well then, this piece is just for you.

I wrote the first Shoplight way back in Summer of 2021. Not a great summer as you remember. In fact for my first interview I wore a mask. However, despite such a shaky start it has been a lot of fun interviewing shop owners and very rewarding to see their growth over these years-and in fact most if not all shops profiled have, with HDRPCA members’ use of the various services, indeed expanded and grown.

One interesting revelation for this shop fanatic has been the efficacy of the front office staff of each shop. They know their stuff! They are the face of the operation and keep each shop running. Most shop owners are somewhere in the back cranking on a wrench or using the latest test equipment to determine how they can best service your car. They are complete professionals. It is that front office person who also deserves your respect and who I am talking about here. He lost his chance of having the best transaxle repair facility in the country solve a major mechanical issue for him. Do not be that guy!

I recall sitting in German Transaxle of America’s front office last year. Kateka was explaining to me how best to treat my GTA rebuilt Eurovan Camper transmission, especially when going uphill. Despite having many years with the van, I had not read or heard the techniques she was advising. I made notes. When Ken, the owner walked in I mentioned how much I valued Kateka’s advice. He chuckled and told the story of the gent who walked in and completely dissed Kateka, demanding to speak only to the owner of GTA. Ken happened to be around the corner out of sight. Having heard the man’s demands stepped out and asked him to leave the building. Immediately. That fella lost it.

I recently stopped by a favorite shop to schedule some work and noticed a customer waiting. Impatiently. Looked like he needed a ride. I offered to take the man to his home as I realized he lived fairly close to my home. I had been working on my own car I was dressed in dirty work clothes, something my passenger noticed and assumed I worked at the shop. His condescending tone for the next 15 minutes was revelatory. Just before I dropped him off he demanded, “when is someone picking me up?” Want some good news? He wasn’t a Porsche owner.

That last sentence however does not always mean Porsche owners are ideal customers. One shop here in CO stopped working on Porsches years ago as the owner was constantly beaten up on pricing by P-car enthusiasts. The owner told me he was working 80 hours a week and realized he could not stay afloat. So he switched his focus from Porsche and many years later is doing great. His necessary decision is our loss. He is one of those mechanical savants you would want under your P-car.

A recent visit to Mountain View Imports reminded me how valuable front office staff can be. Service Manager Alyssa grew up in a car centric family and early on helped with her father’s builds. She knows a wide variety of import cars so every time I have dropped a car off there for work Alyssa has quickly and efficiently determined what work was needed, how much it would cost, and how soon my vehicle would be ready. I greatly value her experience and knowledge.

Bend and CO is noted for its kind inhabitants. Where else can you be asked “got any great plans for the afternoon?” by check out staff at nearly every store in the area.

So as you step through the doors of one of our terrific local shops as a first timer or returning customer, pop on that smile and treat each front office person with the respect you expect for yourself as a customer. It is amazing how well that works for everyone.

SkidCar Training

Deschutes County SkidCar Training is an all-weather driver enhancement program taught with the aid of the SKIDCAR System. The SKIDCARframework attaches to the suspension of a vehicle to allow the front and rear tires to be lifted or lowered independently with a controller. The system allows drivers to experience the inclement driving conditions that cause a vehicle to lose traction in a safe and controlled learning environment. The course costs $100.00 and is available through Deschutes County Risk Management and sponsored by the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners.

Training includes one hour of classroom instruction followed by three hours of hands-on driving in the vehicle. The instructor will cover various techniques, including proper eye placement, acceleration, braking, steering, weight and energy management, as well as proper tire decisions and maintenance. Participants will learn the proper use of anti-lock braking systems and understand the differences between rear wheel drive, front wheel drive and four wheel drive systems, as well as Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control in modern vehicles. Participants will also learn about skid prevention, control and recovery.

WANT TO BUY

I’m looking for someone in our area or even someone they know who is interested in selling their 911. Looking for a coupe. Not a concourse level car but a healthy drivers car with no major engine or transmission issues. Would consider late 70s or 80s 911S or 911SC with Black, White or Silver exterior with black interior. 541-410-0405

Porsche Panorama History

Reprinted with permission

Each month we will look back at the history of Porsche Panorama Magazine and feature an issue. These historical issues are all on line for all PCA members.

This is a sampling of Panorama Magazine from November 1964, nine years after the first issue. It was printed in black and white and was 24 pages long, just a few pages are reprinted here to show content.

The 1964 Panorama magazine was printed in New York and mailed out from Virginia. If you wanted to submit a photo for Panorama you had to mail in the photo, there was no email or internet!

There were 54 PCA Chartered Regions, Oregon is listed.

You could buy Porsche printed cloth material to make your own shirts and skirts. PCA even had a sense of humor.
