PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Joe Mansfield, President, High Desert Region PCA president@highdesertpca.org
Final Comments… For the last two and one half years I have had the pleasure of working with the members of the HDRPCA board as club President. I want to express my sincere appreciation to all of them – Hack Heyward, Ann Sampson, Sam Davis, York Schueller, Greg Snyder, Roger Sanders, Mark Taylor, Jim Holmes, Mike O’Connor and Lisa Sarmiento. I also want to thank Ralph Anzellotti for his contribution to reinvigorate our newsletter, The Downshift , to Greg Domantay for initiating the Sunday morning Cars and Coffee event and Jeanine Faria for her tireless effort to monitor our club finances. There were multiple other club members that contributed their time and talents during the national Treffen event, helped with the new member picnic and club dinners, planned register and drive events, and weekend tours, etc. This group has invested countless hours in an effort to strengthen the organizational structure of the club, improve our communications tools, and provide diverse driving opportunities and multiple social events. I simply don’t have enough room to thank and acknowledge each of you. There is still more work to be done. I think the current board has established a solid foundation for the new team. I know that Fred Nielsen will build off the strengths of the current board and add new members with renewed energy and new ideas. It’s been a pleasure to be an integral part of the High Desert Region Porsche Club. I want to thank all the club members for their support and encouragement over the years. I look forward to seeing you at another driving event or social gathering in the future. Sincerely, Joe Mansfield HDRPCA President

VOLK UND PORSCHES Kendall Auto Soapbox Derby

The 2023 Kendall Auto Soapbox Derby Highlights are here – let’s race in. The second annual Kendall Auto Soapbox Derby took place at River’s Edge Golf Course, and we have so many highlights to share from the awesome designs to the crashes, jumps, and fastest finishes! Thanks to our sponsors and Kendall Cares, our participants and their chosen nonprofits received over $8000 in prize money for their unforgettable soapbox cars and competitive racing. On behalf of the Kendall team and our partners at River’s Edge, congratulations to all the teams that participated and gave it their all. Our teams were made up of local nonprofit organizations, local businesses, high school students, family & friends, and of course, Kendall Auto Team Members! It wouldn’t be a Soapbox Derby without a few crashes in the beginning, but hey, that’s what the hay bales are for! After the practice round, remaining teams went through a time trial. The top 10 teams went to on to race in the elimination rounds and were finally allowed to hit the jumps. Overall scores were based on the design and creativity of the cars, voted on by the spectators, and how fast they made it to the finish line.
Mountain View High School Robotics, Doc’s Downhill Destroyers, took home the first-place trophy after placing second at the inaugural Kendall Auto Soapbox Derby. With a few modifications to their car from last year, they were able to hit the jumps and finish with the fastest time in their mad-max themed Soapbox car. Huge congratulations to this team of high school students, who will be using the prize money to support in their schoolsanctioned robotics competitions and travel. They will be splitting their prize money with Heart of Oregon, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering our Central Oregon youth through employment, job training, education, and services.
Our first place trophy was presented by the champion from the inaugural Kendall Auto Soapbox Derby, Steve Byers. Steve is Porsche Bend’s Classics & Restoration technician and has done incredible work on classic cars for over 20 years. After taking first place in 2022, his car was retired and put in the Kendall Soapbox Derby Hall of Fame. Although he did not build a new car this year, he was generous enough to pass the trophy to the Mountain View HS Robotics team and has plans of building a new Porsche-inspired Soapbox for the 3rd annual derby in 2024.
Future Porsche owner!
Summit High School Robotics, Chaos Theory, placed second in the overall competition in their Mario-Kart themed Soapbox Car. This flexible design made out of PVC pipe and other materials allowed them to be quick around the turns and fast to the finish. Although they were not the fastest car of the day, they received over 25% of the votes from spectators for the design & creativity of their car. We have a feeling their Super Mario costumes won the crowd over as well! Similar to Mountain View High School Robotics, Chaos Theory will be using their prize money to support in their FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competitions across the PNW.
Crash
Jim Wade, mentor of Summit HS Robotics, placed 3rd in the derby with his Soapbox car titled Downhill Gravity. Jim Wade and his team have been working on this car since the completion of last year’s derby, and the design was unlike any other. Made out of carbon fiber and a genius braking system, including a parachute at the finish, this Soapbox car was meant for fast turns and speed. Team Downhill Gravity will be splitting their donation with Summit HS Robotics and FORGE School.
Wheel fell off
There were two more prizes given out to well-deserving teams. Mission Linen Supply and 505 Southwestern. 505 Southwestern brought the Fired-Up Flavor to this year’s event and donated a $1000 bonus prize, which went to our 4th Place Team. Team Scoofa, who competed on behalf of Central Oregon Veteran’s Ranch, they built their car in less than three days and competed unlike any other team. After a wheel that flew off in the practice round, they made some quick fixes and got back on the course just in time for the elimination round. After an eventful racing day, they took home the 4th place bonus prize. Lastly, Mission Linen Supply brought their entire team out to the event and provided a $500 favorite car award. Based off final votes from their team members, the Kendall Ford of Bend team received their award with another Mario Kartthemed Soapbox car. Kendall Ford of Bend, who competed as Peach’s Posse, will be donating their $500 award to their beneficiary, Every Kid Sports.

On behalf of the Kendall Auto Team, congratulations to our teams and thank you to everyone who made this happen. We can’t thank River’s Edge Golf Course enough for their generosity and hard work, to our volunteers including the Bend FFA, media partners including Backyard Media, and beyond. These events remind us how wonderful this community truly is when we all come together to support the same mission. We hope to see you at the 2024 Kendall Auto Soapbox Derby!

“It’s not just the cars…….it’s the people”
Did you know that in 1884 the first production standard electric car in the world capable of being reproduced and sold to the public was revealed? Did you know that by early 1900 1/3 of all vehicles on the road were electric? They started to disappear rapidly around 1920 with the introduction of gasoline and Henry Ford. Ferdinand Porsche—the founder of the eponymous sports car—produced an electric vehicle named the 'P' in 1898, before creating the world’s first hybrid offering, which was powered by both electricity and a combustion engine. Mercedes-Benz also offered an electric model called the Mercedes Mixte, in 1906. This car was adopted as a taxi in the cities and even became a race car in 1907.

Porsche Bend - Carrera Club Monthly Dinners
October 18th & November 15th
Roger and Mary Sanders are moving and they will be really missed. A parting gift from HDR.
The HDR Holiday Dinner included a children’s coat collection that filled a Macan! There were lots of warm hats, gloves, and gift cards too!
Many children north & south of Bend go to school in the winter without a coat, gloves or hats. Your gracious giving will help families that are struggling to provide for their children, a chance to have one less thing to worry about. When I called the Family Advocate, Janet Likens, about the donation she was ecstatic. I delivered our donations to Janet at the La Pine Elementary School on November 27th, which will also go out to other schools as needed. I just wanted to thank the HDR membership again for your generous donations. God Bless you all.. Linda Anzellotti
IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME I have been looking for a 356 Porsche for almost 30 years, and I either couldn't find one or I couldn't afford one. In 1999, I moved to Maui, and in 2001 got married. My wife and I started going to Honolulu each month to attend the Symphony. In early 2002 we were having breakfast at a cafe in Honolulu. While we were waiting for breakfast, I was browsing the Sunday paper for anything interesting in the "Cars For Sale classified section. I found an advertisement for a 1959 Convertible D Porsche. We had time to kill before our plane was scheduled to take us back to Maui, so I called the number listed. Franklin Wong answered and told us he was a Porsche collector and he only lived three miles away. Franklin had a seven car garage filled with cars in different conditions, most notably was his 356 Speedster, 1989 Speedster, 914 - 6 cylinder and others, including the 59 "D." His wife had recently purchased a new BMW and told Franklin that she was not parking her new car on the street, so he needed to sell one of his cars. He decided to sell the 59' "D" since it was in the worst condition. Being "in the right place at the right time," my wife and I said yes, we wanted to buy it. (While we were looking at the car, Franklin took 2 calls from people interested in the Porsche). That same day, on January 20, 2002 a deal was made for $24,000.
The car was in very bad shape when Franklin bought it. He had started working on it and had welded in a new floor and several patch panels at the lower doors and body. He also had rebuilt the top end of the motor (the engine was not the original, but one of the same series).
Since I was living on Maui, I wanted to leave the car on Oahu for the major •renovation work. then traveled from Maui to Honolulu periodically to help move the car around the Island to have work done. The first thing we needed to do was move the car out of his garage. Franklin and a few of his friends rented a warehouse to store some of their cars and work on them. I rented some space from them to park my car between body work, paint, upholstery, etc. (now his wife could finally park intheir garage). This went on until early November 2003. Franklin and I installed the engine and transaxle and tried to get the engine running so we could drive it to the dock and get it shipped to Maui. Of course, it wouldn't start. We called Rick Woltz, President of the Hawaii 356 Owners Group and he came and helped us out. Turned out to be a faulty ignition switch. He bypassed it and we got it going. I later sent the switch to Tony Eugeno in Sharon Hills, PA. and had him rebuild it.
During the next few years after the car was shipped to Maui, I spent time sending the distributor to Don Marks in Oregon, the carbs to Carb Rescue in Arizona and my gauges to Palo-Alto Speedometer for rebuild In 2006, the car was finally roadworthy and I started driving all over Maui. Life was good!
On August 12, 2008, I received a call from John Chatley, 356 Registry President, asking me if I still owned Porsche #85971. I said "yes, what's up?" He said a 1959 Convertible D had just been listed for sale in South Florida. The seller's agent requested for John to see if the car had matching numbers. John looked it up and found that the Engine #83283 should belong to Car #85971. He then called me, and confirmed that I was still the owner. He then asked me what the engine number was in my car. Told him I didn’t know, but was told the engine was the same series. Went to my car and noted engine #P73251. I called John back with this information. He said "Holy Shit! you have his engine, and he has yours! You should go play the Lottery." He asked if I would be willing to trade and said "definitely." Said he would call the seller's agent and let him know about my willingness to swap engines. The Florida car's owner said he had lost his job and needed the money from the sale immediately and wasn't interested in a swap. He did tell me that I could buy the car and then do whatever I wished. Unfortunately, I only had a carport and no room for another car. John calculated that both cars had been together on Oahu around the late 70s.
I then called John back and told him about my discussion regarding the swap. John told me that it was a small community of people that would be interested in buying the Florida car and that he would put the word out that I was willing to trade engines. A year later, I received a call from a gentleman who said "Hi, my name is Buster Venable and I just bought a 1959 Convertible D that has your engine in it and I hear that you wanted to trade engines." I said, "you bet!" He said that his car was in need of alot of work, and that he knew mine was in good shape. So in good faith said he would pull the engine out of his car and send it to Kirk Stowers in Rockledge, Florida to have it rebuilt. He had Kirk rebuild several engines in the past, so I agreed.
While my engine was at Kirk's shop, I decided to send my transaxle to Vic Skirmants in Michigan and have him rebuild it. It was jumping out of first gear at low RPMs, so Ithought "the timing was perfect" to have it fixed.. When it was rebuilt, he had Kirk ship it to Maui and I pulled mine out and sent it to Kirk to have him rebuild Buster's engine. I received my rebuilt engine and transaxle within two months of each other and got the car back together to be on the road for the 2010 "Drive your Porsche Day." I now live in Bend, Oregon and drive it whenever the weather allows. Never did play the lottery, I figured I'd already won with my Engine swap! Rick McGovern
