By now we’re all too aware that fire season has arrived in Central Oregon. The large fire north of Sisters (Akawa Butte) forced the evacuation in late July of Tracy Stout and Mike Paulson from their horse ranch nearby. Since they were again hosting the club’s new member picnic, that event was postponed. The picnic committee and the board will be working to determine whether there is a time and location where the picnic may yet take place this summer. In the meantime, please keep Mike and Tracy – and all of the other folks who have been affected by this summer’s fires – in your thoughts. Please also monitor the club website as other future scheduled activities may be affected.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the members who have volunteered their time this year; without these folks, the club would not be able to operate. The future success of the High Desert Region depends on continually adding to our pool of volunteers: a next generation, if you will, to serve on the board and in leadership roles, to organize our social events, to lead drives and tours and to foster the spirit of camaraderie anchored by our common enthusiasm for all things Porsche. After the July classic drive, we stopped in Prineville for lunch and I noticed a young man walking the parking lot and checking out our cars. I asked him if he was a Porsche fan and he said, yes, and that he was looking forward to getting old and buying one. Funny at the time, I guess, but his comment drove home the challenge faced by every PCA region.

In early November, the board will be scheduling a meeting in the Bend area to plan next year’s activities. All HDR members will be invited to share their thoughts and ideas about what worked this year, and what opportunities there may be for new events, or just doing some things better or differently. If you have a particular enthusiasm for some activity, are interested in becoming more involved, or simply want to learn more about how the club operates, I encourage you to come to this meeting…and consider volunteering! More on this to follow.

The HDR New Member Picnic was cancelled due to the threat of fire, smoke, and evacuation from the Akawa Butte Fire north of Tracy and Mike's ranch.

The decision was made based on the direction of the fire and winds that would blow toxic smoke towards the picnic site.

There are over a thousand firefighters and numerous assets fighting this number one priority fire in Oregon.. As of this writing, Akawa Butte Fire seems halted, though it is still burning and unpredictable.

Refunds are pending and a new date and venue is being researched. Stay tuned for details!

July 25, 2026 Member Picnic Postponed Unfortunately, we have to postpone the annual picnic. One of the fires that started last week, Akawa Butte, is just north of Tracy and Mike's ranch.

We will look at options for having our annual new member celebration sometime later this year. In the meantime, we will issue refunds to your original form of payment.

The HDR Classic Car Group is planning something different to wrap up the season in October: The Classic Cars, all members and all Porsches are invited to this overnight tour heading north to the Maryhill Loops Hill Climb (https://sovrenracing.org/maryhill-hill-climb/), The trip begins on Saturday morning, October 3rd with an overnight in Dufur at the historic Balch Hotel. A block of rooms has been reserved, but be forewarned that some of the rooms share a bath, so reserve early. There’s a car show at the Maryhill Museum on Saturday and the Hill Climb is Sunday the 4th. After watching the hill climb you can return home on Sunday. It should be a great weekend and all are welcome; details can be found at Maryhill Loop Tour -- Savethe-Date.

2026 PCA HPDE events in our area

As a PCA member you may be aware that one of your club benefits is access to PCA’s Driver Education (aka “DE” or “HPDE”) program (https://pca.org/driverseducation). These programs are managed at the regional level, and PCA sets very high standards for the program’s operation. These HPDE programs require significant club infrastructure such that in fact there are only about a dozen Regions in the country offering them. We are most fortunate to have the Pacific Northwest Region (PNWR) just to our North with a longstanding and very well-developed program.

Though as a smaller PCA Region the HDR lacks the resources to put the needed infrastructure in place, the good news is that we are most welcome to attend PNWR HPDE events. Every year they hold events at a selection of tracks, mostly in the Seattle area, but they typically hold an event or two in Oregon. Such is the case for this year with an event in July at Oregon Raceway Park (ORP), and another at Portland International Raceway (PIR) in September.

As a former member of the PNWR I’ve attended a number of them over the years. I have never once not thoroughly enjoyed the entire day (or days) and not been quite glad that I made the effort to attend. I’d especially encourage those of you who might be newer Porsche owners but have never attended one of these events — discovering more about what your car is really capable of in a controlled and safe environment is unbelievably valuable to your ownership experience.

Interested? The thought of attending your first DE event at a racetrack can be daunting though, so what can you expect at your first event? Everything about the event is well described in advance including prep items that you’ll be responsible for. Upon arriving at 7:00 AM you’ll go through “tech” and then be introduced to your instructor. The staff and instructors are very welcoming and supportive of complete newbies. You will be paired with a qualified club instructor for the day who will very patiently guide you through what you need to know about the event procedures, and driving your car on the track by starting very slowly and never exceeding your comfort zone.

You’ll be put in one of three “run groups” with similar pace drivers and will be registered for six or seven 20 minute sessions for the day depending on the track.

Between your sessions you’ll attend a session debrief, have some water, check your tire pressures (if you’re being attentive), and get right back out for your next session.

I promise, you will learn so much more about your car and your ability to use it that the experience will seem priceless in retrospect. My personal opinion is that every Porsche sports car owner should do one HPDE at some point with each Porsche they own.

As your current Driving Events Chair I’m happy to answer any questions you might have about these events, and provide some info about prepping your car etc. This year I’m planning on attending the Sunday July 12th session at ORP and also likely the Sunday September 27th session at PIR. Note that both of these are two day events, you have the option of attending either day or both.

HDR Vice President Randy Lervold had already made several trips searching for great roads based around a new destination. It was the love of cornering that germinated the idea for a club trip that wasn’t so much about the destination but rather the roads around, to and from where we would be overnighting. A road trip centered around DRIVING. So begins The Lost Coast Cornerfest.

The trip from Bend to Eureka with a lunch stop in Grant’s Pass.. We started off with a trip briefing at the mothership, the Kendall Porsche dealer in Bend.. The stop in Grants pass was sure to be a welcomed leg stretch after 3+ hours in the seat

Refreshed and re-caffeinated after lunch in Grant’s Pass, we headed down highway 199, the Redwood Highway, that would follow the Smith River into ancient Redwood stands and out to the Humboldt coast. We couldn’t have asked for better weather! Windows were lowered and tops were down

All told, this was a really fun getaway and legendary driving! Big THANKS to Randy Lervold for extensive planning, mapping and dinner arrangements. A trip well worth repeating!

What is the meaning behind Porsche names?

Why have so many Porsche cars been named with numbers? What do now iconic names like Cayman and Taycan signify? And why is Porsche even called ‘Porsche’ in the first place.

Our comprehensive guide explains why Porsche cars are called what they are. It begins at the very foundation of the company itself.

Why is Porsche called Porsche? Quite simply, it wears the name of its founder, Ferdinand Porsche. Set up in 1931 to provide engineering consultancy services, the firm’s first major contract came in the form of a brief from the German government to design a car for the people – a Volkswagen. Thus, the Beetle was born. Although it wasn’t until 1939 that Porsche completed the car acknowledged as its very first – the Type 64. By then an intriguing numbering system had become well-established in the company.

This in-house method gave every project and order a consecutive number. By 1948, the numbers had reached 356, as well as a significant milestone – this was the first-ever number given to an automobile under the official brand name. And it didn’t stop there.

The numbering system is still seen on Porsche vehicles of the modern day, including that most famous Porsche of all…

Three very special numbers: the one-millionth 911 made was this Irish Green Carrera S, inspired by the first 911 owned by Ferry Porsche himself What does the Porsche 911 name mean?

As business boomed at Porsche, the numbers rose until the successor to the 356 led Porsche to end its use of this custom typology. 1964 saw the ‘Type 901’ launch, making its debut at the Paris Motor Show. After the show, however, an unforeseen issue came to light as Peugeot laid claim to the legal rights of using three-digit numbers containing a zero in the middle.

Already mid-launch, the opportunity to create a new number had passed.

With a typical display of Porsche ingenuity – and the ‘1’ typeface had already been designed for the new model – a decision was made to rename the vehicle ‘911’, and a legend was born. With models such as the 924, 928 and 944 joining the 911 over the ensuing years, the three-digit figure starting with a ‘9’ has become synonymous with the sporting character of the Porsche brand.

What does the Porsche Spyder name mean?

Originating from a time before cars even existed, the term ‘spider’ or ‘spyder’ has become widely used by many manufacturers when referring to a roadster. Its journey to becoming associated with convertible cars dates back to the era of horse-drawn carriages in the 1800s, coming from a coach-making term to describe a two-person, lightweight open carriage. At Porsche, the term is assigned to its open, mid-engine sports cars. In 1953 – back when the original number-naming convention was still used – the legendary 550 Spyder dominated in race car form, winning class victories at the likes of Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana.

What does the Porsche 981/718 name mean?

The 911 model range is not the only numbered model in today’s Porsche line-up, of course. The 981/718 range comprises of the Boxster, Cayman and, yes, the Spyder. Its significance harks back to the legendary 718 mid-engine, four-cylinder race car that first made its appearance at the 1957 24 Hours of Le Mans. Nowadays, the 981/718 is a mid-engine roadster that take the sporting spirit of that racing icon and transfers it to the roads of today.

The unmistakeable styling of the open-top 911 Targa is considered a timeless classic What does the Porsche Targa name mean?

Instantly recognizable through each of its eight generations since the first appearance of the Targa name in 1965, this open-top version of the 911 is characterised by its distinctive roll-over bar and innovative roof concept. The name was inspired by the legendary Sicilian road race, the Targa Florio. The Italian word Targa means ‘plaque’ or ‘plate’ in English.

Originally the name of the Type 547 four-camshaft engine designed by Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann, Porsche would eventually use the name Carrera to honor its more powerful engine versions – most notably, these days, in the 911 model series. The name Carrera (Spanish for ‘race’) ultimately commemorates the success of Porsche at the Carrera Panamericana – the famous border-to-border Mexican endurance race where Porsche achieved such great success with the 550 Spyder in the 1950s.

When Porsche presented the mid-engine Boxster concept study to the world in 1993 it became an instant crowd-pleaser, touching the hearts of sportscar fans from the outset with its pure roadster appearance. Its name is a portmanteau. The word Boxster derives from a merging of its Boxer engine type (so-called because each pair of pistons move in and out like a boxer’s gloves) and that punchy roadster design. This water-cooled, six-cylinder-engine car, with its internal Porsche designation of the 986, roared off the production line for the first time in 1996. It immediately set new benchmarks in performance and safety for the roadster segment.

The Boxster retains a reputation to this day as the epitome of topdown driving fun.

Named after a type of chilli pepper, with the launch of the Cayenne, Porsche spiced up the SUV market What does the Porsche Cayenne name mean?

This unmistakable SUV powerhouse packs intense performance and precise dynamics – in other words just the kind of vehicle deserving of a name with a bit of a kick to it. When the Cayenne debuted in 2002 it became, at the time, the third model in the Porsche product line-up alongside the 911 and the Boxster. The name itself derives from the piquant cayenne pepper – a bold and relevant choice for this intrepid traveler with a fiery nature.

What does the Porsche Cayman name mean?

The Cayman boasts a name with real bite – its snappy title derives from the crocodile-like South American caiman. Powerful yet agile, when it launched in 2006 it joined the Boxster and 911 as another stand-out sportscar in the Porsche range. It now sits with the former of those two models under the 981/718 umbrella.

What does the Porsche Panamera name mean?

It’s fair to say that Porsche owes a great debt to the legacy of the Carrera Panamericana, however short lived the now infamous race was. Besides the Carrera name we now associate with the 911, it’s also from where the Panamera got its name. The race, which was held in its original form between 1950 and 1954, was about endurance, speed and reliability – attributes you could easily describe this car with.

What does the Porsche Macan name mean?

When the Macan went on sale in 2015, people were immediately left scratching their heads about the provenance of the model’s name… unless you spoke Javanese, that is. The name comes from the language’s word for the Indonesian tiger and acknowledges the fierceness that lies beneath the car’s elegant exterior.

The lively nature of the Macan is the reason why that today it’s universally considered the sportiest of compact SUVs.

What does the Porsche Taycan name mean?

When it was launched in 2019, the first all-electric Porsche warranted a name worthy of its electrifying qualities. The word Taycan derives from two terms of Turkic origin, translating approximately to “soul of a spirited young horse”. It’s a phrase that epitomises the personality of the electric Porsche – lively, vigorous, agile, free-spirited and tireless. The name also reflects both the brand’s roots and its future simultaneously, with the ‘horse’ reference reminiscent of the iconic silhouette on the Porsche crest itself. Even since its launch, the word has taken on further positive associations across other languages. In Japanese, for instance, ‘taikan’ roughly means ‘physical experience’ – something you won’t fail to agree with once sat behind the wheel of the Taycan.

June kept the Porsche market on solid footing, even if it didn't quite maintain the pace we've seen over the last year. A total of 746 Porsches crossed the auction block with 73% finding new homes for a combined dollar volume of $60,739,655. While dollar volume and unit volume were both well ahead of June 2025's $38.6 million from 614 cars, this marked the first month since March 2025 that the sell-through rate failed to surpass the same month a year earlier. It was also the first month since February that the top five sales didn't consist entirely of million-dollar-plus cars.

June's calendar featured the usual slate of online auctions, complemented

by Mecum's Tulsa sale and Barrett-Jackson's inaugural auction in Columbus, giving collectors plenty of opportunities to keep the market moving.

Leading the month were a pair of 918 Spyders, and interestingly, neither was equipped with the Weissach Package. The first set June's high-water mark right out of the gate at the beginning of the month. Finished in Guards Red over a Sonderwunsch Garnet Red leather interior with Silver piping, this 420-mile example featured Front Axle Lift, the Carbon Fiber Interior Package, carbon-fiber side mirrors, and a carbon-fiber rear wing. Over the past twelve months, 918 Spyder values have averaged $3.2 million, with sales ranging from $1,715,000 to the $6,050,000 paid for the 845-mile Orange Weissach example at Mecum Kissimmee earlier this year.

While this car lacked the desirable Weissach Package, its stunning specification, extensive options list, and ultra-low mileage were enough to push the price to $3,117,450 all-in, making it the first non-Weissach 918 Spyder we've seen eclipse the $3 million mark.

Another rarity to cross the block in June was not one, but two 964 30th Anniversary Jubilee Editions, the first examples we'd seen at auction since March 2025. The first was a familiar car, #61 of the 911 produced, which returned after last selling in November 2024 for $175,000. Finished in Viola Metallic over a Rubicon Grey leather interior, it underwent an extensive restoration with more than $244,000 invested before setting a new all-time auction record at $340,964. Just ten days later, another Viola Metallic over Rubicon Grey example, #491 of 911, crossed the block. Imported to the United States in 2023 and showing 56,000 km (35,000 miles), it presented as a well-documented, highly original example complete with service records, maintenance book, and detailed paint meter readings. It sold for $300,000, landing right where it should given its higher mileage than the 12,840-mile car that brought $330,000 in March and the freshly restored record-setting example earlier in the month.

Early water-cooled 911s also had a strong showing in June, highlighted by a recordsetting 996 GT2 and an ultra-low-mileage 997 Club Coupe. The GT2, a 20,155-mile example finished in Basalt Black Metallic over Black leather, was well optioned with carbon-fiber trim, Speed Yellow seat belts, and Porsche's updated PCCM head unit, while extensive service records and presentation helped drive bidding well beyond recent results. It ultimately sold for $342,300 including buyer's premium, setting a new twelve-month high for the model. At the other end of the spectrum was one of the finest 997 Club Coupes to surface in years. Number 6 of the 50 produced, this one-owner example showed just six delivery miles and featured more than $7,000 in Porsche Exclusive options, including the factory Aerokit. Despite its rarity and virtually new condition, it failed to sell at a final bid of $300,000. My guess is the seller was hoping to capitalize on the enthusiasm surrounding the new 992 Club Coupe, but while more of those will inevitably come to market, it's hard to imagine another delivery-mile 997 Club Coupe appearing anytime soon, if at all.

While I tend to gravitate toward earlier SWB 911s, G-body Carreras have really been growing on me lately, and this 1975 Carrera Targa was one of my favorite cars of the month. One of just 174 examples imported to the U.S. for the model year, it came finished in Peru Red with Gold Carrera script over a Cinnamon leatherette interior, a color combination that looked absolutely fantastic. Showing 59,000 miles, it also benefited from a well-documented engine rebuild and a long list of recent mechanical work, along with tasteful upgrades including Bilstein dampers and Turbo tie rods. Over the past twelve months, only one other 1975 Carrera Targa has sold at online auction, a Black example that brought $95,000. This one comfortably surpassed that result, hammering at $120,000, and deserved every penny in my opinion.

There were still a few bright spots, including a pair of 356A Speedsters that sold comfortably into the $300,000 range, but the car that drew the most attention was an exceptionally rare 1959 356A 1600 Super GT Speedster. One of an estimated seven examples built for the U.S. market in lightweight GT specification with the pushrod 1.6-liter engine, it came finished in Silver Metallic over a Black interior and retained its numbers-matching engine and transaxle. This wasn't the first time we'd seen the car either, having previously failed to sell at $750,000 during Monterey 2025 and again at $1,000,000 at Mecum Kissimmee this January. This time, bidding stopped at $896,000 without a sale. I hate to use the phrase "the market has spoken," but with three attempts producing bids within a relatively narrow range, I'd say we have a pretty good idea of what buyers are willing to pay.

Overall, June was an interesting month. Unit volume and dollar volume remained exceptionally strong, but the slight drop in sell-through rate is something worth watching, especially after several days toward the end of the month dipped into the 50% range. Whether that's simply a temporary pause or the beginning of a broader shift should become clearer in July. I still expect the best of the best, particularly rare, highly original, and ultra-low-mileage cars, to continue setting new benchmarks. July's calendar is a relatively quiet one with the usual online auctions joined only by Mecum's Harrisburg sale before the market's attention turns squarely toward Monterey Car Week in August.

IT’S NOT JUST THE PORSCHES IT’S ABOUT THE PUPPIES!

SkidCar Training

Deschutes County SkidCar Training is an all-weather driver enhancement program taught with the aid of the SKIDCAR System. The SKIDCARframework attaches to the suspension of a vehicle to allow the front and rear tires to be lifted or lowered independently with a controller. The system allows drivers to experience the inclement driving conditions that cause a vehicle to lose traction in a safe and controlled learning environment. The course costs $100.00 and is available through Deschutes County Risk Management and sponsored by the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners.

Training includes one hour of classroom instruction followed by three hours of hands-on driving in the vehicle. The instructor will cover various techniques, including proper eye placement, acceleration, braking, steering, weight and energy management, as well as proper tire decisions and maintenance.

Participants will learn the proper use of anti-lock braking systems and understand the differences between rear wheel drive, front wheel drive and four wheel drive systems, as well as Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control in modern vehicles. Porsche will take your high-mileage 911, strip it down completely at the factory in Germany, rebuild every component from the ground up, and return it to you with zero kilometres on the odometer — officially, fully documented, and factorycertified.

The programme is called Factory Re-Commission, part of Porsche’s Sonderwunsch (“special request”) division, which has been around since 1978. The car is fully disassembled at Porsche’s facilities, every technical component is restored to original factory specification, and the finished vehicle is officially recorded as being in zero-kilometre condition. At the same time, you can redesign the exterior colour, interior, and specification to match the car you always wish you had ordered.

Porsche hasn’t revealed the price, but if you have to ask, you already know the answer.

$800 for 4 Michelin X-ICE Snow Tires 20" (For front narrow/rear wide staggered Porsche SUVs) These Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV tires are basically brand new, with approximately 600 miles of winter driving on them. These tires cost about $1,700 for the set from Kendall. ($350 ea. for the fronts and $475 ea. for the rear tires) We just need to sell them to someone who can use them, and to get them out of our garage. They do not fit our new SUV. Tires were always stored in a warm space.
