It's that time of the month again when Ralph puts out another Downshift and in this month's President's Message, I want to emphasize several important Club matters.
While we are on the subject of the Downshift, I want to point out how fortunate our Club is to have such a high- quality newsletter and thank Ralph for the many hours of hard work required to accomplish that objective. As all of you have recognized, this is now a monthly publication which Ralph creates at no cost to the Club. Many regions either no longer have a newsletter or pay outside organizations to produce theirs.
Secondly, I want to commend Hack Heyward and his team of Randy Lervold, Sam Davis, and Mark Taylor for the outstanding job they have done on developing the new website using the Club Express platform. I felt they set an ambitious schedule, but met or exceeded their expectations which required many hours of their personal time. This will be a continuing project requiring constant updating but will contain a wealth of information available to members Many of us are using it and realize it is pretty user friendly
Earlier this month, we had a national PCA Executive Board Meeting with the objective of advising all regions of PCA's financial condition. PCA is in solid financial condition with over $12 million in assets and $6 million in liabilities. 2023 resulted in an operating profit allowing national PCA to provide a surplus distribution to all regions of $4 per primary member or $1188 to our region. This money will be used to provide a special benefit to our Club members. More on that to follow.
Nationally, PCA has grown to over 105,000 members. We have not had a dues increase in 13 years, but we will see dues increase after April from $46 to $56. The regions will also see an increase in their distributions from national PCA.
With the spring weather, we will see more outdoor activities involving monthly social gatherings, cars and coffee, tours, and drives. As stated in the Downshift and on the Website, we are going back to our original Arrive and Drive platform with the objective of higher Club participation and enjoyment from our drives With nicer weather on the horizon, we hope to see many members enjoying the activities the Club offers.

The High Desert Region Register and Drive is changing for 2024 to Arrive and Drive. There will be no registration or fee for these drives and no directions will be handed out for the drives. We will have separate arrive drives for Porsche SUV owners and separate Saturday Arrive and Drive events. We will also have separate Classic Car Group Arrive and Drives for air cooled and early transaxle Porsches.
There will be several requirements from the participants to make these group drives fun and successful and we are asking for your help to keep these events enjoyable We will be starting our drives from locations outside Bend and they will be different for each monthly drive.
Arrive and Drive Rules:
All of the Arrive and Drive events are group drives and will be two to three hours in length on the beautiful roads of Central Oregon.
(1) Since these are group drives and we will be obeying all safety and speed laws all participants are expected to stay together as a group.
(2) This is not a race and there will be no passing of other cars in our group.
(3) The participants are required to keep the car behind them in sight and also to keep the pace of the car in front The drivers will be required to wait for the car behind them at intersections and corners to insure we stay together as a group. The lead cars will slow or pull over to wait for the cars to remain together and keep everyone in sight so we can continue as a group.
(4) There is no rubber banding allowed and if you want to drive faster or slower than the group please remember this is a group drive and you will be asked to maintain the group pace.
(5) If you are not comfortable with these rules then please don't keep the other participants from enjoying the drives we have planned.
Our new website is now in full production and the old website is shut down. When you navigate to www.highdesertpca.org, you’ll be taken to the homepage of the new website. Many of you have been logging in to the new website using the web address https://hdr-pca.clubexpress.com/. No problem with that—either will take you to the same place. Note that when you have logged in to the new website, the Home button is now the club’s logo in the upper left corner of the screen.
Everything you need will now be accessible in one place from either your PC or mobile device. This includes event descriptions and reservations, news, photos, downshift magazine archives, forums, classifieds, links to our social media presence, and contact information for other members
We very much want to post photos taken by members on the new website. John Naitove, as part of his role as the club’s primary photographer, will also coordinate the collection and use of member photos. So please send your photos to John at naitove@icloud.com. John and Ralph will coordinate which photos are used in the downshift magazine and which are posted directly on the new website.
As previously announced, a principal feature of the new ClubExpress website is to replace MotorsportReg.com as the club’s event registration site. The new website integrates the events calendar with announcements, registration and payment, greatly simplifying our event registration process. To aid members in planning ahead for events, events with firm dates but in preliminary form are posted now on the ClubExpress Events Calendar. These are being updated by the event coordinators as they develop the events and information becomes available. Going forward, we will only set up events on MotorsportReg.com when those events are shared with other regions or other clubs
So in order to register for club events going forward, you will need to sign in to the new website. 138 members have now logged in at least once and have access. Thank you so much for that! If you have not yet had a chance to log in to the new system for the first time so that you can register for events, please make it a priority. If you have not received the personal email invitation to access and join the new HDR-PCA website on the Club Express platform, please contact Hack Heyward at hack@heywardhome.org.

Almost a quarter of a century ago Fred Faria had a grand idea to break away from the Oregon PCA Region and form the new High Desert Region.. It was a long drive to Portland events and winter driving in sports cars was not advisable.
Fred was the driving force to start discussions regarding this somewhat radical idea. The change made logical sense but someone needed to be the catalyst for make things happen. Fred was just that person.
There were many hoops to jump and Fred pushed several people to make contact with PCA National and secure legal help. As momentum was building so was the idea of starting a separate PCA Region.
On April 29, 2000, The High Desert Region was started. Fred was a logical choice for the new President but his work and family obligations did not fit well. Bill Moore agreed to be the first HDR President and the new HDR was off to a great start.
I first met Fred a few weeks ago at Touchmark Care Facility along with Jeanine his wife and two long time friends Fred Nielsen and Phil Fenn I heard stories on how they all met, how the Region was started, and how long term friendships were established.
“It’s not just the cars…….it’s the people”
We moved to Bend in 1996 and Fred met the other Fred and the Bills at a Porsche event at Eagle Crest in 1999 They came to the realization that the Bend/Redmond/Sisters area was growing and there were more Porsches in Central Oregon than ever. Fred was curious as to what was necessary to start a PCA chapter and contacted PCA National. National was quite helpful and Fred ran with it.
The Freds and Bills met occasionally over the next few months, at the now defunct The Brand Restaurant on Hwy 97 and at the Original Pancake House in Bend. With the help of an attorney and the enthusiasm found in those who love cars, the High Desert Region Porsche Club of America, Inc. came into existence on April 29, 2000.
Fred Faria is second row-second from the right wearing Hawaiian shirt, to his right (black tops) daughter Kerry and wife Jeannie
Fred Nielsen is back row fourth from left wearing ball cap
However I had no idea that Fred had started a car club until one afternoon, he asked if I want to drive to Black Butte Ranch for dinner. A bit unusual but I thought it sounded fun. But, when we headed to Carrera Motors I was a bit confused. I hadn’t realized I was about to participate in the club’s first “Arrive, Drive and Dine” event.
Everyone else had already arrived and were standing around chatting and looking at 356s and 911s Soon I was introduced to 12 of the nicest, friendliest, coolest people I had ever met all at the same time This was my first time participating in any car club activity. It was a beautiful drive to Black Butte Ranch.
Dinner was delightful and I had some wonderful new friends. I had always assumed a car club was for looking at car engines. The HDRPCA was already the embodiment of “It’s the cars AND the people”.
April 29 is the 24th anniversary of HDR PCA, the birth of the Region was the subject of the March 2024 Downshift. This month's Downshift feature article focuses on Fred Faria the member who was the driving force behind the creation of our Region.
As I said in the President's Message, I met Fred 25 years ago at a Porsche car show We had many things in common; we both had old Porsches and loved to drive and work on them, but also had common interest in skiing, running, and biking and enjoyed those activities together for many years.
Those of us who have lived here and remained members of the HDR for those many years, have had so many fun experiences and formed life-long friendships because Fred pushed us to form our Region. If he hadn't been so forceful, it might have been another 10 years or 20 years before the Region would have been formed, or perhaps the Region would never have been formed and we would have missed those special relationships and fond memories.

Peak Euro
1065 Paiute Way #105 Bend, OR 97702 (541) 526-7303
Owner: Ryan Miles
I’ve got to tell you right off the bat I really like this shop. They have taken great care of my 1999 VW Eurovan Camper for the last six years. So it is with pleasure the kind editor assigned me Peak Euro for this Shoplight episode.
I do not want to dwell too much on the oft told story of the farm kid who learns about all things mechanical then applies said knowledge to the care and maintenance of fine cars but that is exactly the story here with owner Ryan Miles. Courtesy of an older brother a young Ryan moved from building Mustangs to Audis specifically the A4s.
He was amazed to deal with vehicles where “someone had thought about the design.” Moving on to A6s (“just better”) he worked as a technician and figured out as a young man the way to own and enjoy such cars is to repair and restore, selling and moving up the ladder to the point where he opened Peak Transport (later renamed Peak Euro) in 2007.
As good a tech as Ryan became he understood the value in having factory trained technicians on site. Today, Peak Euro has BMW, VW, Mini-Cooper, Mercedes, Audi master techs on hand as well as our favorite marque Porsche serviced by the affable Carl Severtsen, a Porsche Gold Master Certified mechanic. With a staff of 14 and 9 service bays inside the super clean 6800 square feet of shops and offices, Peak Euro is able to take excellent care of the 2,500 customers currently on the books. With Carl’s addition several years ago Porsche owners have a solid source for quality service for all model Porsches. While Carl’s expertise is in the water cooled models he is perfectly capable and happy to work on air cooled Porsches. All shop work comes with a three year warranty.
In the six years I have known Peak Euro the company has grown significantly. And will continue to expand. Ryan attributes this to taking online course and workshops on how to be a better leader. Having many long term employees and Peak Euro’s growth gives witness to his efforts of constant improvement In fact he is now giving back by teaching young business entrepreneurs the same skills he learned. You will find complete and friendly professionalism from the moment you walk in the building.
Before leaving the shop one late February afternoon I asked Porsche Gold Master-tech Carl to name his favorite Porsche. This question harkens back to Shoplight episodes of years past when the same question would be presented to interviewees. Carl’s answer was quick and a surprise to this old school Porsche 911 owner: “A 2010 Cayenne GTS with 6 speed manual and sports exhaust.” That answer sent me to Google for a look/see. A nice choice Carl.
Peak Euro, as is a tradition with Shoplight articles, is pleased to offer a special $99.97 (pricing a nod to a much loved Porsche model) oil change for all water cooled Porsche models to HDRPCA members.
