Fred Nielsen is on vacation and Stu Malakoff VP has taken the helm. What a year 2024 was for HDRPCA! With over 50 events and more than 25 net new members last year, your club is both active and growing. And no doubt you’ve seen the recent tsunami of communications around the survey, the survey’s results, and action plans for 2025; I hope you can take comfort in knowing that HDRPCA is listening to our membership and taking steps accordingly to deliver the best Porsche club experience possible. In short, I expect our club to be firing on all cylinders in 2025. And 2025 is an especially auspicious year since the High Desert Region will be celebrating its 25 year anniversary! What can you expect for 2025? A more intentional effort around events to ensure that all of our members have opportunities to participate, make new friendships, learn more about their Porsches, and have memorable driving experiences. We’ll also continue to optimize our vastly-improved website, which is already proving to be an effective hub for events registration, posting photos, sharing ideas and making requests-for-help via the forums section. And, of course, our 25 year anniversary celebration – scheduled to happen in April – will both honor our club’s heritage as well as position us to accelerate into the future with optimism, camaraderie, and renewed purpose. And now I have an “ask” to make of you. If you have the time and the inclination and a “can do” attitude, I ask that you email me (stu@bendwealth.com) or contact another Board member now or at the next event you attend and let that person know you’d like to help. We have a great team of dedicated Board members who are supported by a cadre of fantastic volunteers. But fresh ideas and more hands to go around and new leaders within our club are always welcome. Arrive and Drive (A&D) - Classic Car Group (CCG) There will be no registration or fee for these drives and no directions will be handed out for the drives. We will have separate arrive drives for Porsche SUV owners and separate Saturday Arrive and Drive events. We will also have separate Classic Car Group Arrive and Drives for air cooled and early transaxle Porsches. There will be several requirements from the participants to make these group drives fun and successful and we are asking for your help to keep these events enjoyable. We will be starting our drives from locations outside Bend and they will be different for each monthly drive.

Arrive and Drive Rules: All of the Arrive and Drive events are group drives and will be two to three hours in length on the beautiful roads of Central Oregon. (1) Since these are group drives and we will be obeying all safety and speed laws all participants are expected to stay together as a group, this includes drive leaders and drive sweeps. (2) This is not a race and there will be no passing of other cars in our group. (3) The participants are required to keep the car behind them in sight and also to keep the pace of the car in front. The drivers will be required to wait for the car behind them at intersections and corners to insure we stay together as a group. The lead cars will slow or pull over to wait for the cars to remain together and keep everyone in sight so we can continue as a group. (4) There is no rubber banding allowed and if you want to drive faster or slower than the group please remember this is a group drive and you will be asked to maintain the group pace. (5) If you are not comfortable with these rules then please don't keep the other participants from enjoying the drives we have planned.

When I was 18 years old I would pass by Brumos Porsche returning from a day surfing at one of Jacksonville, Florida’s beaches. If I spotted a 356 on Brumos’ used car lot, I would park my 1966 VW Beetle just off Atlantic Blvd and around the corner from Brumos. I would sprint to any 356, quickly climb in and ‘dry shift’ until a salesman ran me off. That is as close to a Porsche I got at 18. By contrast, one of our newest HDR members, Ryan Marks at 18 year old, is doing things a little differently-revealing by his nature a future engineer, an airline pilot and certainly an executive position further down the road. This young man is impressive! He is currently a freshman at OSU Cascades looking at a mechanical engineering major with a possible minor in aerospace engineering. He loves cars. He wants to fly. He wants to drive Porsche cars. He wants to hang out with Porsche people. And he just purchased his first Porsche-a black 2000 Boxster with 78K miles on the odometer.

Ryan grew up fascinated with machinery, gravitating with a friend to Subarus, specifically the WRX model, a lightweight, powerful (271 HP) street rocket popular with budding car enthusiasts. He loved working on the WRX, discovering the mechanisms that propel the car forward. He learned welding, how to work on a car’s suspension and how to do a first rate tune up. A fortunate encounter with a friend of the family, Duram Plummer, sent Ryan on a deep dive on all things Porsche. He found a 944 project car but realized that model may not be best in the snow so shifted his focus, with Duram’s guidance, to the Boxster.

If you follow Bring A Trailer, you know that one of the first comments brought up when a 1999-2005 Porsche is listed is the status of the IMS bearing. During those years Porsche changed the design of this all important piece of the motor resulting in a higher than normal failure rate for certain models. The IMS failure is an engine out repair. Read expensive. Recall that Ryan is obsessed with all things mechanical and he had done enough research into the Boxster to know his particular car may present problems. He had confirmed with the previous owner the IMS bearing had not been upgraded so on his first oil change he examined the old oil and strainer for metal shavings which can be indicative of a bearing or other engine damage. Despite not seeing any obvious signs or a problem, Ryan intends to put the Boxster up on wood blocks and break the motor down and replace the IMS bearing himself. That is some proactive heavy lifting! As a warm up to the IMS check he plans to replace the stock exhaust system.

Ryan is looking forward to becoming an active member in HDRPCA and plans to attend as many functions as his scholastic and social life permits. I am sure you will join me in welcoming such an interesting young person to our club.

Awbrey Glen was the location of the HDR Holiday Dinner and about 77 members attended this memorable festive event. The ladies looked all fancy and sparkly, some of the men wore suits and ties and even a few tuxes. Every one was ready to have a great time and this annual event felt very special. There were plenty of Porsche smiles indicative that HDR had a very good year.

We stated out with a social hour and hors d’oeuvres mixed with new and old friends.

The buffet dinner was excellent and the prime rib was so tender….

Linda Anzellotti put together a slide show presentation of HDR photos from 2024. These photos were from dinners, rides, tours, picnic, and other events of our membership having fun! The slide show was projected on a TV so attendees could view anytime during the Holiday event.

Guess what happens all over CO in late Fall and Spring? That’s right, everyone is getting snow tires/wheels switched over to the appropriate season. So when I walked into the well-appointed lobby of NW Wheel and Tire it was full of old guys in hats and various beard growths waiting to have their summer tires changed over to snow tires. Except for my purpose in being there, I fit right in. But how would founder Dave Kelley ID me for this interview? Well in the Porsche world if you keep the faith, as the Maestro reminded us for years on the pages of the 356 Registry, good things will happen. And happen they did as Dave strolled through the front door and zeroed on me immediately.

Dave is a man full of movement. That he made time for me on a busy Fall day speaks volumes. Taking phone calls, consulting with techs, solving problems during our interview showed me someone who is at the top of their game and loves it. A VW/Porsche guy from a young age, Dave worked at the local Porsche dealership under the previous ownership until 2007 when he ventured out operating in a 6’X12’ trailer servicing tires at dealerships across CO. Finding success he expanded to a full-blown mobile service complete with all necessary equipment to service wheels and tires. In 2013 he with his Dad’s assistance moved into their first brick and mortar before expanding to their current location in 2016. Eight years later he employs ten technicians, three service advisors and three folks in administration. His Dad still drops by from time to time to help out. This is another example of the American Dream!

But to provide a quick overall: full service tire shop, powder coating, wheel repair, custom wheels, suspension and alignments.

My visit to NW Wheel and Tire was not just to meet Dave and learn about his operation. My left front Fuchs wheel somehow picked up curb rash along its nearly 39 year old life. Certainly wasn't me who ran up on a curb! Now many of you know the Fuchs (German for ‘fox’) forged aluminum wheels are notoriously difficult to repair and sometimes require sending out to specialists in California for expensive and time consuming work. I knew Dave had repaired a Fuchs, with a dent inside the wheel, for Fred Nielsen so I was optimistic he could help me with simple curb rash. And sure enough I am scheduled to bring my 911 back to him next Spring for a blend repair.

Dave gave me a tour of his facility pointing out the various specialized pieces of equipment necessary to service any wheel or tire. A media blast room. One room contained a wall of different paint canisters to offer a customer a broad array of custom wheel color choices. It is a very complete shop. Visiting NW Wheel and Tire was a reminder how fortunate we are to live in CO with numerous family owned shops to service our Porsches. Let's all take a few seconds to count our lucky stars.

On a different note, Dave, as mentioned, is a Porsche guy through and through. He currently drives and tracks a 1991 964 with 130K miles on the odometer. Last year while in Stuttgart at the Porsche factory, he lucked out in renting a new Slate Grey GT3 for 24 hours. Swiss Alps here we come! Taking full advantage of his location and chariot, he returned the GT3 with more than 1000 kilometers driven. This might be why when I asked what would be his dream build he quickly said, “GT3 RS.” Of course I asked how many speeding tickets he picked up during the 24-hour period and there was at least one, possibly more…

Porsche Artifacts: A few readers may want to provide an article to Porsche Artifact: Please do. It would be nice to read Porsche Artifacts in downshift. Introduction: Most of us (I hope I am not the only one) have kicking around in our collections of life’s journeys Porsche parts and pieces, actual or memories that you may want to tell us about. At every gathering of the High Desert Porsche sodality ( I looked it up, it is us) so many good stories are told: retelling knowledge of parts, technologies, and design changes that make up this wonderful shaping of steel and plastic that has capitative all of us.

So, my effort. My father acquired a 356 B Super 90, silver with black interior while spending time in Germany during the early 1960’s. However, that is altogether another story. Somehow, he got caught up in European car clubbadges. So, he joined every European club he could and received a badge. This continued after he retired too. And as the Super 90 had a Leitz luggage carrier, painted same color as the car.That is where the badges were displayed. Over time these badges, with modification to attacheach to the luggage carrier, wound up in an open cardboard box and then ultimately in my care. What to do with these? Not being sure what would happen with them in their current state or in the future, I needed to do something that preserved the memory, the badges, and be more or less indestructible.

I have added four items that are not original to the Super 90 badge collection. Top middle, left to right are two military ribbons awarded to my father, WWII: Occupation of Europe and Bronze Star. Right grill top: 356 badge and 911 badge collected by me. Below these are three Japanesecar club badges collected by my father, circa 1950. The Japanese car club badges are another story. A morning well spent. Thank you.

SkidCar Training

Deschutes County SkidCar Training is an all-weather driver enhancement program taught with the aid of the SKIDCAR System. The SKIDCARframework attaches to the suspension of a vehicle to allow the front and rear tires to be lifted or lowered independently with a controller. The system allows drivers to experience the inclement driving conditions that cause a vehicle to lose traction in a safe and controlled learning environment. The course costs $100.00 and is available through Deschutes County Risk Management and sponsored by the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners. Training includes one hour of classroom instruction followed by three hours of hands-on driving in the vehicle. The instructor will cover various techniques, including proper eye placement, acceleration, braking, steering, weight and energy management, as well as proper tire decisions and maintenance. Participants will learn the proper use of anti-lock braking systems and understand the differences between rear wheel drive, front wheel drive and four wheel drive systems, as well as Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control in modern vehicles.
