PUBLISHER note Dear readers, October is a beautiful reminder to slow down and appreciate the season around us. The changing colors, cooler evenings and the anticipation of the holidays create the perfect backdrop for family, community and celebration. In this issue, our cover celebrates Thanksgiving and Halloween, two occasions that bring people together in very different ways. Thanksgiving invites us to pause and reflect on what we are grateful for, while Halloween brings creativity, fun and a wonderful sense of community, especially for children and families. We have also filled this edition with stories that reflect the many dimensions of life this time of year. From easy ideas for a stress-free Thanksgiving and festive food inspiration to fall travel and practical tips for preparing your home, car and family for winter, there is plenty to explore. Our health and wellness pages focus on timely conversations, including breast cancer screening, healthy routines and staying prepared as the days grow shorter. We also bring you stories from across our community that celebrate achievement, generosity and the people who continue to make a difference. As we move into the final stretch of the year, I hope we can all find a little more time for the people who matter, appreciate the small moments and extend kindness wherever we can. These simple gestures are often what make a community stronger. Thank you for continuing to make South Asian Entertainment Magazine a part of your lives. Your support and encouragement inspire us to keep bringing you stories that inform, connect and celebrate our diverse communities.

12th Annual Ignite a Dream F

brings Surrey together for brighter futures

or 12 years, Ignite a Dream has brought the Surrey community together around a shared belief that education can open doors and change lives. On September 19, that spirit once again filled the room as the 12th Annual Ignite a Dream raised

more than $70,000 in net proceeds to support bursaries for students who have overcome adversity and significant challenges. Hosted in support of students pursuing post-secondary education at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, the evening brought together community members, sponsors, donors, volunteers and local businesses for a cause that goes far beyond a single night of fundraising. The bursaries help ease financial barriers and give students an opportunity to continue their education and build a brighter future.

More than $70,000 raised in one evening will translate into educational opportunities for students who have already shown remarkable resilience. For Surrey, it was another powerful reminder that when a community invests in its young people, the possibilities extend well beyond the classroom.

The evening was also a celebration of the community partnerships that have helped Ignite a Dream grow into an annual tradition. Guests came together with restaurant and beverage partners, volunteers and supporters, creating an atmosphere of generosity and connection while keeping the focus firmly on the students who stand to benefit. Special recognition went to the Gary & Gail Grelish Foundation, the event’s Presenting Sponsor, and Scotiabank, the Community & Volunteer Champion, for their significant support. Their contributions, alongside those of countless donors and community partners, helped make this year’s fundraising milestone possible. After 12 years, Ignite a Dream continues to demonstrate the impact of collective action.

celebration of service took on a creative new form in Vancouver as children picked up their brushes and turned blank canvases into colorful expressions of their hopes, ideas and imagination.

As part of Sewa Pakhwada, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver hosted a children’s painting competition on September 19, 2026, at the Vancouver Art Gallery, bringing

together young participants from different age groups, members of the Indian diaspora and the wider community. Centered on the theme ‘Viksit Bharat,’ the event offered children an opportunity to explore what a progressive, inclusive and forward-looking India means to them. The gallery became a lively space of creativity as young artists translated their thoughts onto paper through color, shapes and imaginative scenes. Their paintings reflected different perspectives on India’s aspirations, while also highlighting the importance of culture, community and connection in shaping the country’s future. Consul General Masakui

Rungsung, along with other consuls, joined the children during the event and distributed school bags and art supplies to the participants. The gesture added another meaningful dimension to the celebration, encouraging young minds to continue exploring their creativity while developing a deeper appreciation for cultural values and the spirit of seva. For the children, the competition was more than an opportunity to paint. It was a chance to express themselves, learn from one another and connect with an idea that reaches beyond borders. Their colorful interpretations of ‘Viksit Bharat’ reflected a generation growing up with connections to both its heritage and an increasingly global world. Sewa Pakhwada is rooted in the

spirit of selfless service, and the Vancouver celebration brought that spirit to life in a way that felt particularly natural for children. Through art, participation and community, the event demonstrated how service can also be about creating spaces where young people feel inspired, included and encouraged to dream. The gathering served as a reminder that nurturing the next generation is itself an important form of seva. By giving children a platform to create, imagine and share their vision, the celebration helped strengthen the bonds between culture, community and service.

Getting your gut back on track Understanding chronic constipation and how everyday habits can support better digestive health.

W

hen your gut slows down, your whole day can feel off. Occasional constipation is common, but persistent difficulty passing stool can signal that your digestive system needs more attention. From hard or infrequent bowel movements to straining and the uncomfortable feeling that you have not fully emptied your bowels, chronic constipation can affect everyday comfort and quality of life. Constipation is generally described as having fewer than three bowel movements a week, although frequency alone does not tell the whole story. Hard or lumpy stools, excessive straining, a feeling of

10

www. entertainmentmagazine.ca

OCTOBER 2026

blockage or difficulty completely emptying the rectum can also be signs. When two or more of these symptoms persist for at least three months, constipation may be considered chronic. Why does constipation happen? There is no single cause. A diet low in fiber, inadequate fluid intake, limited physical activity and regularly ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement can all contribute. Constipation can also be associated with pregnancy, diabetes, an underactive thyroid and certain neurological conditions. Problems involving the pelvic floor muscles

may make it difficult for the muscles needed for elimination to coordinate properly.

types work in different ways, so they should be selected according to individual needs and medical advice.

In some cases, an obstruction or another condition affecting the colon or rectum may be responsible. This is why persistent or unexplained constipation should not simply be dismissed as a dietary problem.

Know when to seek help Long-lasting constipation can lead to complications such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fecal impaction and, in severe cases, rectal prolapse. Medical attention is particularly important if constipation is accompanied by significant abdominal or rectal pain, bleeding, vomiting, unexplained weight loss or a sudden change in bowel habits.

Small changes can help For many people, improving everyday habits can be an important part of managing constipation. Gradually increasing fiber through vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains and bran can help add bulk to stool and support easier passage. Kiwi fruit may also help some people maintain regular bowel movements. Fiber should be increased gradually to avoid bloating and gas. Drinking enough fluids and staying physically active can also support healthy bowel function. Creating a regular bathroom routine, particularly after meals, and responding to the urge rather than postponing it may help establish a healthier pattern. Managing stress is another worthwhile part of overall digestive wellness. If lifestyle changes are not enough, a health-care provider may recommend an appropriate treatment, including fiber supplements or laxatives. Different

A health-care provider may use a physical examination, blood tests or imaging to identify an underlying cause and determine the appropriate treatment. The goal of good digestive health is not simply to have more frequent bowel movements. It is to support a comfortable, regular and effective digestive process. Paying attention to persistent changes, nourishing your body with fiber-rich foods, staying active and seeking professional advice when needed can all help keep your gut on track.

O

ctober can be one of the best months to be active outdoors in Canada. The intense heat of summer has eased, daylight is still available for outdoor activities and many parks, courts and fields remain accessible before winter arrives. If you have spent the summer promising yourself you would exercise more, this is a good time to stop waiting for the “right” routine. Pick an activity you enjoy, invite someone along and make the most of the weeks before snow and icy conditions change your options. 1. Cycling Best for: Families, commuters and people looking for a full-body cardio workout A bike ride can be as relaxed or demanding as you want. A weekend trail ride works for families, while longer distances and hills can provide a serious cardiovascular workout. Cycling strengthens the legs and improves cardiovascular fitness without putting the same impact on joints as running. Before you go: Check your brakes, tires, lights and helmet. Dress in layers and plan your route around daylight. Try this: Choose a scenic trail you have never explored and turn the ride into a weekend outing. 2. Pickleball Best for: Beginners, couples and social groups

Pickleball has become one of Canada’s most accessible recreational sports because you do not need to be exceptionally fit or

14

highly skilled to enjoy it. The game involves short bursts of movement, quick reactions and frequent changes of direction. It can also be an easy way to meet people and stay socially active. Before you go: Comfortable athletic shoes matter more than expensive equipment. If you are new, look for beginner sessions at community centers or local clubs. 3. Golf Best for: A slower-paced outdoor workout Golf may not feel like traditional exercise, but walking a course can add significant movement to your day. Carrying or pulling your equipment also adds physical effort. October can be an especially enjoyable time to play because cooler temperatures make walking more comfortable. Before you go: Check course conditions and book earlier tee times as daylight decreases.

Before you play: Warm up properly, particularly your calves, shoulders and hips. 5. Hiking Best for: Almost everyone You do not need technical equipment or previous experience to benefit from hiking. A short, relatively flat trail can provide a gentle workout, while hills and longer routes increase the challenge. It is also one of the easiest activities to make social. Bring your family, friends or dog and turn exercise into an outing. Before you go: Check the trail conditions, wear appropriate footwear and take water even when the weather is cool. 6. Soccer Best for: Groups, families and people who enjoy higher-intensity exercise A recreational game can deliver a surprisingly demanding workout, combining running, acceleration, balance and changes of direction.

You do not need to join a competitive league. Many communities offer recreational games suitable for different ages and skill levels. Before you play: Warm up properly and avoid playing through an injury simply because the outdoor season is ending. Make October count You do not need to become an athlete before winter arrives. The goal is simply to find an activity you are likely to continue doing. Choose something enjoyable, start at an appropriate level and invite someone to join you. And remember that colder weather does not automatically mean you have to stop exercising outdoors. But once conditions become icy, snowy or otherwise unsafe, change your activity rather than taking unnecessary risks. The best fall workout is the one that gets you outside while the season still allows it.

Bonus: Skip the cart when practical and walk the course. 4. Tennis Best for: People who want cardio, coordination and competition Tennis combines running, quick changes of direction, balance and hand-eye coordination. You can play casually with a friend or turn it into a more demanding workout. If you are returning after a long break, start slowly. The cooler weather can make you feel comfortable enough to push harder than your body is ready for.

Five new cars changing

Canada’s roads this fall

From next-generation hybrids to electric family vehicles, the latest arrivals are giving Canadian drivers more choices than ever.

C

anada’s automotive market is changing quickly. Electric vehicles are becoming more mainstream, hybrids are expanding into segments once dominated by conventional gas-powered vehicles and manufacturers are redesigning

best-known compact SUVs is adding a hybrid option.

This fall brings several noteworthy arrivals. Here are five vehicles worth having on your radar.

The Rogue has long appealed to drivers looking for practicality without moving into a larger SUV. The new hybrid powertrain gives buyers another option, particularly those who want

motor to drive the wheels while the gasoline engine generates electricity. Who should watch it: Families and commuters who want an electrified SUV but are not ready for a fully electric vehicle. 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV Why it matters: Mitsubishi is bringing an all-new electric crossover to Canada. The Eclipse Sportback EV is expected to arrive in Canada in late October, making it particularly relevant to shoppers considering an electric vehicle before winter. The model features a 75-kilowatthour battery and up to approximately 454 kilometres of estimated range, depending on configuration. Its crossover shape also gives it a practical advantage over many traditional electric sedans. Who should watch it: Drivers looking for an EV with crossover practicality and enough range for regular Canadian commuting. 2027 Lexus ES Why it matters: Lexus is taking one of its established luxury sedans into a new electrified generation. The redesigned ES is available in Canada with both hybrid and battery-electric powertrains, giving buyers a choice between conventional refuelling and fully electric driving. The new generation also brings a substantially redesigned cabin and updated technology, while retaining the comfort-focused character associated with the ES. Who should watch it: Luxury buyers who want electrification without giving up comfort,

refinement or a premium interior. 2027 Toyota Highlander EV Why it matters: A familiar family name is entering Toyota’s electric lineup. The Highlander has traditionally been associated with practical family transportation and three-row versatility. Its move into the EV market reflects a larger shift: electric vehicles are increasingly being offered in formats designed for families rather than only urban commuters. For buyers considering an electric family vehicle, interior space, charging access and realworld winter range will be among the most important considerations. Who should watch it: Families looking for an electric vehicle with SUV practicality. 2027 Kia Telluride Why it matters: Kia’s redesigned

three-row SUV is expected to enter the Canadian market, although its Canadian launch timing remains uncertain. The redesigned Telluride brings updated styling, technology and powertrain choices to a segment that remains highly competitive in Canada. A hybrid option is among the major changes, potentially making the new Telluride particularly interesting to families who want three-row capability while reducing fuel consumption. Who should watch it: Larger families and buyers who need three rows but are not ready to move entirely to an electric vehicle. What this means for Canadian buyers The biggest change is not simply the arrival of five new vehicles. It is the

expanding range of choices. You can now shop for a compact SUV with a hybrid system, a fully electric crossover, an electrified luxury sedan, an electric family vehicle or a hybrid three-row SUV. For Canadian drivers, however, the smartest choice will depend on more than a vehicle’s headline specifications. Charging access, winter performance, driving distance, fuel or electricity costs, insurance and the availability of service in your area should all be part of the decision. The future of driving is arriving in different forms. The good news for consumers is that they have more options than ever to decide which one fits their lives.

education

Five AI courses that could give you an edge

AI can do far more than edit your photos or answer your questions. Learning how to use it for research, analysis, automation and decisionmaking could give you a valuable advantage at work. 18

F

or many people, artificial intelligence has become synonymous with asking a chatbot to write an email, create a birthday invitation or turn a photograph into something futuristic. Those are fun introductions to the technology, but they barely scratch the surface of what AI can do. The bigger opportunity is learning how to use AI to solve problems, improve workflows and build skills that employers increasingly value. You do not necessarily need to become a programmer. The right course can help you understand where AI fits into your existing career and where it could take you next. 1. AI fundamentals Best for: Anyone starting from scratch

sales, human resources and operations. Learn how machine learning, generative AI, automation and large language models actually work. Beyond asking questions, you will learn to identify tasks that AI can assist with, evaluate its answers and understand where human judgment remains essential. AI literacy can strengthen careers in administration, marketing, education,

Potential roles: Digital specialist, operations coordinator, technology project coordinator and AI implementation support. 2. Generative AI and prompt engineering Best for: Communications, marketing, education, research and office professionals Good prompting is not simply asking AI a better question. It involves providing context, defining the task, working through multiple steps and checking the result. Beyond writing, AI can help organize research, analyze documents, summarize large amounts of information, create workflows and assist with repetitive tasks. Potential roles: AI content specialist, digital marketing specialist, research assistant and AI-enabled communications professional.

OCTOBER 2026

Courses in this area combine data analysis, visualization and AI-assisted tools. Beyond spreadsheets, you can learn to identify patterns, interpret data, build reports and support business decisions. Potential roles: Data analyst, business analyst, marketing analyst and operations analyst. Who hires: Banks, retailers, consulting firms, technology companies and large corporations. 4. Machine learning Best for: People considering a technical career If you want to go beyond using AI and understand how intelligent systems are built, look for courses covering Python, statistics, algorithms, model training and evaluation. Beyond using AI, you learn how machines identify patterns, make predictions and improve through data.

3. AI and data analytics Best for: Professionals who work with numbers, reports or business decisions

Potential roles: Machine learning engineer, AI engineer, data scientist and software developer.

AI can help turn large amounts of information into useful insights.

Technology companies, financial institutions, telecommunications

companies, energy firms and research organizations are among the sectors creating opportunities in this area. 5. Responsible and ethical AI Best for: Professionals working with people, information or regulated industries AI brings questions about privacy, bias, copyright, misinformation, security and accountability. Beyond using AI, understanding these issues can help you decide when AI is appropriate, how its output should be reviewed and how organizations can use it responsibly. Potential roles: AI governance, risk, compliance, privacy and technology policy. Turn AI curiosity into career capital Before enrolling, ask whether a course teaches practical skills, includes projects and is current. Then put those skills to work. Build a small portfolio, automate a genuine task, analyze a dataset or improve an existing workflow. The real advantage of AI is not knowing how to ask it a question. It is knowing which questions to ask, which problems to give it and when its answer needs a human.

Relationship When work, children, phones and family responsibilities consume the day, relationships can quietly slip into maintenance mode. The problem may not be a lack of time, but a lack of attention.

20

couple can spend an entire evening together without having a meaningful conversation. Parents can be with their children all day and still feel disconnected. Families can share meals, errands and weekends while everyone remains absorbed in separate worlds. The problem is rarely that people do not care. It is that everyday responsibilities leave very little emotional energy for connection. When your relationship becomes a to-do list For many couples, particularly those raising children, conversations gradually become practical: Who is picking up the kids? Did you pay the bill? What is for dinner? When is the school meeting?

These conversations are necessary, but when they become the entire relationship, couples can start functioning like colleagues managing a household rather than partners.

a few moments instead: dinner without phones, a short walk after dinner or the first 15 minutes after everyone gets home. Consistency matters more than creating elaborate rules.

Make room for conversations that have nothing to do with logistics. Ask what your partner is worried about, excited about or struggling with. Share something about your own day beyond what you accomplished.

When family expectations become part of the relationship For many South Asian families, relationships can involve parents, in-laws and extended family. That can provide valuable support, but it can also create pressure around parenting, finances, celebrations and how much time couples spend with relatives.

When exhaustion replaces intimacy Sometimes people are simply exhausted. After work, commuting, childcare, cooking and cleaning, even talking can feel like another task. This becomes particularly difficult when one partner feels responsible for most of the household’s mental load, including remembering appointments, school deadlines, groceries, family commitments and birthdays. Before asking, “Why don’t we spend more time together?”, ask whether responsibilities are actually being shared fairly.

nding gether?

OCTOBER 2026

Try asking: “What is making life feel heaviest for you right now, and what can I take off your plate?” Practical support can be the first step toward emotional closeness. When screens become the easiest escape Phones and television can be a welcome way to switch off. The problem begins when they become the only way people relax. You do not need to ban screens. Protect

Talk about boundaries before disagreements become family conflicts. Both partners should be able to express what they need without feeling they are choosing between their spouse and their family. Connection does not require a perfect life You do not need an expensive dinner or a weekend away. Connection can happen while making tea, driving to pick up the children, preparing dinner or taking a walk. Put the phone away. Ask a real question. Listen without immediately trying to solve the problem. And if life has become particularly demanding, say it: “We have been surviving the week instead of enjoying each other. What can we change?” Then ask one more question: “When was the last time you felt genuinely connected to me?” The answer may be uncomfortable. It may also show you exactly where to begin.

here is something particularly satisfying about visiting the Okanagan in fall. The intense summer heat has eased, the vineyards and orchards take on autumn colors and the region settles into a slower rhythm. For anyone looking for a short escape from the Lower Mainland, October can be an ideal time to explore the valley. The trick is not trying to see everything. scenery and a few memorable stops. Friday: Arrive and take the scenic route If you are driving from Vancouver or the Lower Mainland, leave early enough to enjoy the journey rather than treating it simply as a transfer between cities. Kelowna makes a convenient base for a weekend, with access to the lake, orchards, restaurants and surrounding communities.

After checking in, keep the first evening simple. Walk along the waterfront, explore downtown Kelowna and find a restaurant featuring locally sourced ingredients. If you arrive before sunset, make time for a scenic viewpoint or lakeside walk. Saturday: Make the landscape the destination Start the morning with breakfast before heading into the surrounding countryside.

October is a beautiful time to explore the area’s orchards and agricultural communities. Depending on what is operating during your visit, look for farms, markets and seasonal produce stands offering apples, pumpkins and other local products. Designated-driver services or a planned tour can also make winery visits easier and safer for groups. Sunday: Slow down before heading home Use your final morning for one of the region’s outdoor experiences. ctober is the sweet spot for getting ready for winter. The weather is still manageable, there is enough daylight to tackle outdoor jobs and you have time to book appointments before seasonal demand peaks. Rather than waiting for the first snowfall to expose what you forgot, use the month to get ahead. Here are a few things to take care of now, before the harsh Canadian winter arrives.

Your home 1. Service your heating system Have your furnace checked if it is due for maintenance and replace the filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Make sure vents are clear and, if you use a fireplace or wood-burning stove, arrange the appropriate inspection or cleaning before regular use begins.

2. Prepare your home for cold and moisture Check windows and exterior doors for drafts, inspect weatherstripping and look for gaps around openings. Clean gutters and make sure downspouts direct water away from the foundation to help prevent water damage from autumn rain, melting

Your car 3. Book your winter tire change Do not wait for the first snowfall. Check tires for tread, cracks and uneven wear and ask a tire professional whether they are still suitable for the season. Booking early can also help you avoid the seasonal rush.

stored. Make sure everyone in the household knows the basic plan for a power outage or severe weather, including how to communicate if regular routines are disrupted.

5. Rebuild your winter emergency kit Check your vehicle’s emergency supplies before winter travel begins. Depending on your driving needs, consider a flashlight, first-aid supplies, warm clothing or blankets, water and basic tools. Replace anything damaged, missing or expired. Your health and family 6. Catch up on postponed health appointments October is a useful time to

schedule routine healthcare, dental and vision appointments. Review regularly used medications and request refills in advance rather than waiting until supplies are running low. 7. Protect your sleep and activity routine Shorter days and colder weather can make it tempting to become less active. Keep consistent sleep and wake times and find an exercise routine you can maintain through winter, whether indoors or outdoors.

8. Check everyone’s winter wardrobe Bring out coats, boots, gloves, hats and other cold-weather gear now. Try children’s clothing and footwear on before they need them, and repair, replace or donate items that are no longer suitable. Your household and finances 9. Prepare for power outages and emergencies Know where your flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies and other emergency essentials are

10. Get ahead of winter spending Look at upcoming costs for heating, groceries, clothing, holidays and travel. Review subscriptions and recurring payments, identify major expenses and decide where you can reduce unnecessary spending. A little planning now can make the next few months considerably easier on the household budget. The October advantage You do not need to finish everything in a single weekend. Pick two or three tasks each week and work through them while the weather and your schedule still give you some flexibility. The goal is not to prepare for every possible problem. It is to deal with the predictable ones before they become urgent.

What women should

breast cancer screening know about

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, making it a timely reminder that breast health should not be a once-a-year conversation. Knowing your risk, recognizing changes and understanding when screening may be appropriate can help you take a more informed approach to your health. 28

B

reast cancer can affect women of different ages and backgrounds, and there is no single screening plan that is right for everyone. Your age, family history, personal medical history, breast density and other risk factors can influence what screening or follow-up may be appropriate. That is why awareness matters. For our October health focus, we are looking beyond the pink ribbons to address some of the practical questions women may have but do not always ask: When should I start screening? Does family history matter? What happens during a mammogram? And what if I notice a change before my next appointment? Screening and diagnosis are not the same thing Breast cancer screening is intended for people who do not have symptoms. Mammography is the main screening test used for many women.

So, when should you be screened? There is no universal answer. The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care’s 2024 draft recommendations say women ages 40 to 74 should receive information about the potential benefits and harms of mammography so they can make a decision that reflects their individual circumstances and preferences. If women in this age group choose screening, the Task Force recommends offering mammography every two to three years.

Your family history matters Tell your healthcare provider if a close relative has had breast or ovarian cancer, particularly if the diagnosis occurred at a younger age or if several relatives have been affected.

Screening programs and policies can also vary across provinces and territories.

A personal history of breast cancer, certain inherited gene mutations, previous radiation to the chest and some other factors can also place someone at increased risk. People at higher risk may require a different screening approach.

The takeaway: Do not rely on a friend’s schedule, an internet

Do not wait for screening if you notice a change

A screening result does not diagnose cancer. If an image shows something that needs further investigation, additional testing may be recommended. This can include more imaging or, when appropriate, a biopsy. It is also important to understand that screening has both potential benefits and harms, including false-positive results and unnecessary followup. Canadian recommendations therefore emphasize informed, shared decision-making rather than assuming that one schedule works for everyone.

checklist or an outdated recommendation. Ask your healthcare provider or local screening program what applies to you.

Screening is not a substitute for medical assessment when you have symptoms. Speak with a healthcare professional if you notice a new lump or swelling, a change in breast size or shape, skin changes, nipple changes, unusual discharge or another persistent change that concerns you. Most breast changes are not cancer, but they should not simply be ignored. Five questions to take to your appointment 1. What is my personal breast cancer risk? 2. When should I begin screening? 3. How often should I be screened? 4. Does my family history change my screening plan? 5. What changes should prompt me to seek medical attention? Make awareness personal Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not about creating fear. It is about replacing uncertainty with information. Know your family history. Understand your screening options. Pay attention to changes in your body. Keep up with recommended healthcare appointments and ask questions when something does not make sense. Most importantly, do not wait for October to think about breast health. Awareness is useful when it leads to action. A conversation with your healthcare provider could be the place to start.

went from house to house seeking food or treats. Modern trick-ortreating became especially popular in North America during the 20th century. If you are giving out candy, keep individually wrapped treats ready. If you are not participating, turn off your exterior light so families know not to knock. Tips for a safe and enjoyable Halloween: As you prepare for trick-or-treating, keep these considerations in mind: 4 Consider allergies: When buying candy, be mindful of common allergens such as peanuts and tree nuts. Store-bought, sealed treats are generally preferred. Some households also offer non-food items for children with allergies. 4 Cost-effective choices: Buying treats in bulk can save money. Choose individually wrapped candy and keep extra supplies available if more children arrive than expected.

A

s October arrives, Canadian neighborhoods come alive with spooky decorations, carved pumpkins, glowing lights, and displays. Halloween is celebrated each year on October 31, when children and adults dress in costumes and many children go trick-or-treating. For newcomers, the experience may look familiar from movies or television, but customs can vary from neighborhood to neighborhood. Halloween traditions in Canada Modern Halloween in Canada combines traditional elements with creative new customs, from elaborate yard displays to themed parties and community events.

by immigrants. Today, families carve faces, patterns, and creative designs into pumpkins, with some communities hosting contests or family carving events. If using candles, battery-powered lights are a safer option, especially around children. Costumes galore Costumes are central to Halloween. Earlier traditions included disguises associated with beliefs about spirits, while modern costumes draw inspiration from movies, television,

superheroes, animals, fantasy characters, and current pop culture. Some families coordinate group costumes, while others make outfits at home or purchase them from stores. Trick-or-treating: The highlight of the night On Halloween evening, children typically go door-to-door in their neighborhoods to collect candy. The practice has connections to older European traditions, including souling and guising, in which people

4 Alternative treats: Small toys, stickers, pencils, or other inexpensive items can provide options for children who cannot have candy. Look for allergy-aware community initiatives in your area as well. With these tips, you’re ready to experience Halloween in Canada. Whether you carve pumpkins, dress up, attend a community event, or go trick-or-treating, the celebration is about creativity, connection, and community, with just the right amount of spookiness. Happy Halloween!

Here’s what you can expect during this spirited celebration: Decorating for Halloween As Halloween approaches, decorating homes and yards becomes a popular tradition. Some families choose simple pumpkins, skeletons, or spooky signs, while others create elaborate scenes with lights, inflatables, and sound effects. Decorations may appear several weeks before Halloween, turning residential streets into attractions for families. The art of pumpkin carving A centerpiece of Halloween decor is the carved pumpkin, or Jack-o’-lantern. The tradition has roots in Irish and Scottish folklore and was carried to North America

How to plan ahead, share the workload and enjoy the holiday without getting buried in the details.

T

hanksgiving is supposed to be about gratitude, family and good food. Yet for the person hosting, the holiday can quickly become an exercise in logistics. There is a guest list to manage, groceries to buy, dishes to prepare, dietary preferences to consider and a house to clean before anyone arrives. The answer is not doing more. It is planning better. Start with the people, not the menu Before deciding what will be served, establish who is coming. Ask about food allergies, vegetarian or vegan preferences and any other dietary requirements in advance. This is particularly helpful when hosting a large or multigenerational gathering.

If someone offers to bring a dish, accept the help. Asking a guest to bring dessert, an appetizer or a salad can make the workload considerably lighter. Do not leave everything for Thanksgiving Day The easiest way to create unnecessary stress is to attempt every task on the same morning. A few days before: Make your grocery list, shop for non-perishables, check serving dishes and make anything that stores well.

It is also worth remembering that Thanksgiving does not have to look the same in every Canadian home. For many South Asian families, the table may bring together traditional Canadian dishes with familiar favorites such as pulao, samosas, paneer, dal or family recipes passed down through generations.

The day before: Chop vegetables, prepare sauces and desserts, organize ingredients, set the table and clear space in the refrigerator.

Create a menu you can actually manage A memorable meal does not require a dozen homemade dishes. Choose a few things you genuinely enjoy preparing and simplify the rest.

A written cooking schedule can also prevent multiple dishes from fighting for oven space at the same time.

A practical formula: 4 One main dish: turkey, chicken or a vegetarian centerpiece 4 Two or three sides: potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, rice or another family favorite 4 Something fresh: a salad or seasonal

38

vegetable dish 4 One dessert: homemade or store-bought 4 Simple drinks: water, sparkling water, tea, coffee and one festive option

On Thanksgiving Day: Concentrate on the main dish and foods that genuinely need to be served fresh.

Make your home guest-ready, not perfect Your guests are coming to spend time with you, not inspect your baseboards. Focus on the spaces they will actually use. Clean the bathroom, tidy the entryway, clear the dining table and make room for coats and shoes. A few seasonal

www. entertainmentmagazine.ca

touches such as flowers, candles, autumn leaves or small pumpkins can make the space feel festive without turning decorating into another project. Leave room for the reason you are gathering Perhaps the most important preparation is protecting some time for yourself. Sit down with your guests. Put the phone away. Let the conversation run long. Ask older relatives about family stories. Let children participate. Take a moment to appreciate the people around the table. And when dinner is over, do not feel obligated to make everything perfect before you relax. Make the leftovers work for you Have reusable containers ready before the meal begins. Refrigerate perishable food promptly and divide larger quantities into manageable portions. The next day’s meal does not have to be another Thanksgiving dinner. Leftover turkey or vegetables can become sandwiches, wraps, soups, rice bowls or other family dishes. Freezing suitable portions can also help prevent food waste. The real secret to a successful Thanksgiving? Plan the parts you can control, delegate what you can and accept that the occasional overcooked dish, spilled drink or forgotten ingredient is not going to ruin the day. The best Thanksgiving memories rarely come from a perfect table. They come from the people sitting around it.

Roasted pumpkin and red lentil soup Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes

Spiced pumpkin loaf Makes: 1 loaf Prep time: 15 minutes Bake time: 50 to 60 minutes

Ingredients 4 4 cups peeled and cubed pumpkin 4 1 cup red lentils, rinsed 4 1 medium onion, chopped 4 3 cloves garlic, minced 4 1-inch piece fresh ginger, grated 4 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 1 teaspoon ground cumin 4 ½ teaspoon turmeric 4 ½ teaspoon smoked paprika 4 4 cups vegetable stock 4 Salt and black pepper, to taste 4 ½ cup coconut milk, optional 4 Fresh cilantro or parsley, to garnish Method Preheat the oven to 400°F. Toss the pumpkin with half the olive oil, season lightly and roast for about 20 to 25 minutes, until tender and lightly caramelized. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a large pot. Add onion and cook until softened. Add garlic, ginger, cumin, turmeric and paprika and cook for about one minute. Add the lentils, roasted pumpkin and vegetable stock. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, until the lentils are completely tender. Blend until smooth using an immersion blender. Stir in coconut milk if using and season with salt and pepper. Kitchen tip: Add a squeeze of lemon juice before serving to brighten the soup. Add cumin and mustard seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Add onion and cook until golden. Stir in garlic, ginger and green chili and cook for another minute. Add turmeric, coriander and chili powder. Stir quickly, then add the pumpkin and salt. Pour in the water, cover and cook over medium-low heat for 12 to 15 minutes. Pumpkin paratha Makes: 8 parathas Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Ingredients For the dough: 4 2 cups whole-wheat flour 4 1 cup cooked pumpkin puree 4 ½ teaspoon salt 4 ½ teaspoon cumin seeds 4 ½ teaspoon ajwain 4 ½ teaspoon red chili powder 4 ½ teaspoon garam masala 4 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro 4 Water, as needed 4 Oil or ghee, for cooking Method Combine the flour, pumpkin puree, salt, cumin, ajwain, chili powder, garam masala and cilantro in a large bowl. Knead into a soft dough. Because pumpkin contains moisture, add water gradually and only if necessary. Cover and rest the dough for 15 minutes.

Serve with: Roti, paratha, naan or steamed basmati rice.

Divide into eight equal portions and roll each into a ball. Dust with flour and roll into circles about 6 inches wide.

Kitchen tip: Choose pumpkin that is firm enough to hold its shape. Overcooking can turn the dish into

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place a paratha on the hot surface and cook until small

In one bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and spices. In another bowl, whisk eggs, pumpkin puree, oil, brown sugar and vanilla until smooth. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir just until combined. Do not overmix. Fold in nuts if using. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Kitchen tip: The loaf is often even better the next day, once the spices have had time to develop. Make the most of the pumpkin If you are cooking with fresh pumpkin, roast or steam the flesh until tender, then puree it until smooth. Extra puree can be refrigerated for several days or frozen in measured portions for future soups, curries, parathas and baking. And do not discard the seeds. Clean and dry them thoroughly, toss with a little oil and seasoning, and roast until crisp for an easy snack or crunchy topping.

Meghna Gulzar’s morally complex crime drama puts Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran on opposite sides of a disturbing question about justice. Director: Meghna Gulzar Cast: Kareena Kapoor Khan, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Jitendra Joshi, Kshitee Jog, Kanwaljeet Singh Genre: Crime, drama, mystery, thriller Duration: 143 minutes Rating: 3.5 stars

‘Daayra’ takes a horrific crime and turns it into a larger examination of justice, police power and the public’s growing impatience with the legal system. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the Hindi crime thriller stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran as two senior police officers who hold sharply different views on what justice should look like. The film, inspired by true events, was released in theaters on September 18. The story begins with the rape and murder of a young woman, followed by a police encounter in which four men accused in the crime are killed. DCP Raman Kumar, played

42

by Prithviraj, becomes a symbol of swift justice for a public eager for closure. But the encounter raises questions about whether the men were legitimately killed in a confrontation or whether the operation was a planned extrajudicial action. DCP Ajooni Kohli, played by Kareena, is brought in to investigate. This conflict is where ‘Daayra’ is at its most effective. Gulzar does not make the debate entirely black and white. Raman represents the anger of people who have lost faith in a slow and often frustrating system, while Ajooni insists that justice cannot be separated from procedure and accountability. The film also highlights institutional failures, including the way complaints involving missing women and violence can be mishandled. The performances are a major strength. Prithviraj brings intensity and conviction to Raman, while Kareena gives Ajooni a controlled,

www. entertainmentmagazine.ca

measured presence. Their contrasting approaches create the film’s central tension, even though they share limited screen time. Kshitee Jog also makes an impact as the grieving mother.

movie review

THE VERDICT ‘Daayra’ asks where justice ends and vengeance begins

The film is not flawless. Its measured pace occasionally slows the momentum, and some critics felt that Kareena’s character is not given enough material. The final confrontation also does not deliver quite the emotional or dramatic impact the premise promises. Still, ‘Daayra’ deserves credit for refusing an easy answer. It asks whether a desired outcome can truly be called justice when the process itself is compromised. That question stays with you well after the credits. Verdict: Thought-provoking, well acted and socially relevant, ‘Daayra’ is a worthwhile watch for audiences who enjoy crime dramas that challenge rather than comfort.

By: Sajan Kumar

THE VERDICT

Toxic
