Dear readers,

After all the definitions and expression of thoughts on Mother, I still feel that ‘who is mother’ is a question that cannot be answered satisfactorily by words. One must experience the love, nurturing, compassion, and empathy of a mother at a personal level to know what a powerful, godly creation it is.

The month of May is dedicated to mothers. As the world celebrates Mother’s Day this month, we can just be thankful for having some wonderful women in our lives who we can call mothers. The thread of empowerment and motherhood is prominent throughout the ‘Miracle Mom’ special issue of South Asian Entertainment Magazine.

This month also marks the celebration of Victoria Day across Canada. Initially, the day was to honor Queen Victoria’s birthday, but now it has also been celebrated as the official birthday of Canada’s sovereign.

We have put together an eclectic mix of content on health, fashion, beauty, sports and relationships to keep you entertained. The entire team behind this edition has worked relentlessly to bring forth quality content to you. I hope to stand high and rise above the expectations of all our readers.

I am thankful for your support and the love you have been showering on us throughout this journey. I would love to have your suggestions and recommendations to be better and grow with every upcoming edition. You can share your valuable feedback at rajesh@ entertainmentmagazine.ca

You can also visit our website www.entertainmentmagazine.ca to get an e-copy of this magaz ,ine.

Sending across my love and support to all the readers out there. Enjoy the issue and Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms out there.

SHANNON MANN A HYPER INDEPENDENT

MIRACLE MOM!

MOTHERHOOD IS NEAR TO DIvINITY. IT IS THE HIGHEST, HOLIEST SERvICE TO BE ASSuMED BY MANkIND

Rewarding part of being a mom

Motherhood has been an extremely healing experience for me. During my childhood, I grew up in a very abusive and toxic environment and that environment taught me to be hyper independent as many children of trauma become in order to cope with life. Motherhood showed me what unconditional love is supposed to look like, and healed those parts of me that were looking for love. I adore seeing the wonder in my children’s eyes as they experience life and I get to relive my childhood through them again, which also has been a very healing and rewarding experience. Everyone in our family has a very healthy and respectful relationship with one another as we focus on open communication. Our kids know they are our first priority and I think that is the kind of love children need to become their very best selves.

Feeling of being a miracle mom

I think being able to give life makes all mothers Miracle Moms! More recentlythis is something that my husband Pinder, and I have both experienced. We are very intentional about the moves we make as a family and professionally to give our children the best outcomes in life. We are very proud to say our older son who is graduating high school has been accepted into an Honors Program for his undergraduate studies. He has also been accepted into every single incredibly competitive program he has applied to across Canada. As a Desi parent, there is no higher accolade! I am beaming with pride and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for my son Chandan. And if you follow me on social media, you must have seen me with my youngest, Jiorne, who is hands down my favorite person on planet earth. He is 10, incredibly kind, bright, charming, and he’s a whole vibe. When I look at both of them, I surely feel like a Miracle Mom!

Striking balance in life

Over the years, there was no balance at times - sometimes your career takes more time and sometimes-family obligations are at the forefront when children are young. I think as South Asians we are lucky to have extended families such as Dadis and Nanis to help and care for young children while mom and dad go to work. But Covid gave both Pinder and I a well needed pause, we realized that we were poster children for ‘toxic productivity’, and we really needed to take time for our own mental health, relationship with each other and our loved ones. There is a saying that resonates with us now that we are both approaching 50 - ‘no one dies thinking I should have worked more’. My husband and I try to connect and make sure that our lives feel balanced. If it does tip one way, we try to bring the balance back. I do feel that I have a very equal relationship with my husband which allows me time for work, and we share home responsibilities so it doesn’t solely weigh on my shoulders. I also check in with my kids and communicate regularly to see if they need anything more from us than what we are giving. I reassure them that they are our first priority and will always be.

Qualities of a miracle mom

I have been able to create a beautiful life with happy children - that is my miracle. In many cases (and for both of my parents) people experience traumatic childhoods and grow up repeating the same intergenerational trauma and beliefs. I broke the cycle and am very proud of the person I am now. I hope when my children see me they can see that I stand firmly in who I am as a person and in my value systems. I think about the lives of women who came before me and the rights and freedoms that I have now compared to them, that is something that I am extremely thankful for, especially in a world where in many places women’s rights are actually receding.

Miracle mom stands apart

I am a very outspoken person on issues of the patriarchy, and I encourage women everywhere to question the value systems in their homes and see if it is serving them right. If it is not, try to be vocal and make the change. That stands for cultural norms too. I have always been that person who challenged the status quo. In addition, being a mother to two boys, I think it is our responsibility to raise respectful partners, and I make sure they have respectful relationships and expectations with women in their lives. Be the change you want to see in the world, and that starts at home.

Spotlight on the miracle moms

I hope women who read this see themselves in me, and I hope to find inspiration learning about the other women being featured in this special issue of South Asian Entertainment Magazine. I also think women should be celebrated not just on Mother’s Day or Women’s Day but every day. I feel we are still a male dominated society and that reflects in many industries in the South Asian diaspora, but we are seeing the change. It’s happening, and I’m here for it.

AN ExTRAORDINARY LEGACY BuILT WITH A MOTHER’S HEART

I

BELIEvE THAT MOTHERS ARE THE HEART OF THE HOME AND HAvE THE INNATE ABILITY TO uPLIFT EvERYONE AROuND THEM

Rewarding part of being a mom

Our sons are young men now and our oldest Navin is 22, and our youngest Dayvn is 19. My husband Darsh and I look back and realize that all the pure love, energy, and heart that we put into raising our boys mattered and had a profound impact on who they are today. In the future, we hope that our boys do have lives and career paths that are rewarding and spark true happiness for them. Most importantly, we hope to have raised respectful, loving, and caring young men who make the world a better place with their presence. I know that this will be my greatest reward and joy of motherhood. Being Navin and Dayvn’s mom is truly my life’s greatest work.

Striking balance in life

Women often ask me how I manage all the things that I do in my work, career, homelife and community. I want to be honest by saying it hasn’t always been easy. Like most working moms I’ve struggled with maintaining a busy career and community work all while managing everything that comes with being a super hands-on mom. I wanted to be there for everything and didn’t miss a single game, a camp send off or countless volunteer duties. It all mattered to me, and I wanted my boys to see me fully present in their world in those formative years. My message to young moms is to hang in there because with each phase, things do get a little easier. It is important for moms to lean on their support networks in the critical child rearing stage. Try to be that support network for others too, whether it is ridesharing with other moms, or just being a person to call upon when someone needs a helping hand. As your children become more independent and self-sufficient, moms do have more time to do the things that ignite their own spirits. It’s all worth it so keep going, moms!

Feeling of being a miracle mom

I am impressed with all the miracle moms in my own life. I have watched marvelous and highly capable women handle a multitude of tasks so easily and they always do it all with such warmth and grace. I don’t think men truly understand how much women contribute to their homes and so much often goes unnoticed. For example, to arrive at a major speaking event, I have to be fully prepared and knowledgeable. I must be nicely put together and I will have made dinner for the family before I even left the house. My example is not unusual as this is a common theme for most women running busy households. We have this innate ability to manage so much, and we do it all from the deepest part of our hearts and souls. We are all miracle moms!

Qualities of a miracle mom

I have learned strength and resilience by having a first-hand view of my own extraordinary mothers. My mom, Harbans kaur Johal, 92, is a partition survivor and has now lovingly raised three generations in Canada. My mother-in-law, Gurdev kaur Dosanjh, 80, is a cancer survivor and has also caringly raised three generations in our family. From them both, I have learned to love unconditionally and without question in the various special roles that I hold dear. Whether that is as a mother to my own boys, or as “Auntie karen” to many and now “Dadi k” and “Nani k” to our family littles. These are some of my most cherished roles and bonds in life. From these two wonderful women I have learned that love holds no bounds and that there is no limit to how much love you can give others, especially children.

Spotlight on the miracle moms

I hope that when other women see this cover, they see a little bit of themselves in each of these incredible women’s stories. We share the same triumphs, the same struggles, and we share the same joys as mothers. We are actually more the same, than we are different. I believe that mothers are the emotional backbones of our families. We provide a safe holding place for everyone’s needs and feelings and we do our best to protect our loved one’s day in and day out. I hope that mothers reading this take time to take care of themselves too, and just know how much they are valued and needed in this world.

WOMAN OF RESILIENCE AND DETERMINATION

MOTHER’S LOvE IS THE MOST POWERFuL FORCE ON EARTH

Rewarding part of being a mom

The most rewarding part of being a mom is learning and growing with my kids. I cherish each moment that we have created together and find joy in all the little things. Being a mom has fulfilled the nurturing need deep inside me and I find that rewarding in itself. Longing to be a mother for so many years, I am now blessed with two wonderful children who have grown up to be great human beings and I take pride in their upbringing.

Qualities of a miracle mom

When I was 29 years old, I flew to India by myself to find a baby to adopt. I had no idea what I was in for but without hesitation and a lot of drive, I landed in New Delhi and soon after roamed the streets for nearly two weeks leaving my name at every hospital I came across. After a pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib, a miracle happened. My baby boy was born. I suddenly had enormous strength to take care of this tiny little child, my child. I was determined to get us both back to Canada quickly. My resilience strengthened when I had to deal with the bureaucracy and the adoption process in India all while taking care of my newly born son. With this experience, I built up so much confidence and endurance. I was ready for my second child four years later. I went back to India to do it all again. Miraculously I found my little baby girl. It was love at first sight!

Feeling of being a miracle mom

I felt like a miracle mom when I brought my son from the hospital in New Delhi and immediately stepped into the role of taking care of an underweight newborn baby without any help or guidance. At the same time, I was on calls all day and ran around New Delhi, getting the adoption process started along with fulfilling passport and visa requirements. Becoming a mother was my goal in life in my 20’s. The very thought of adopting a child is what kept me going through the years of infertility. My thoughts always lead me to the road of adoption. Adoption was my escape route; and I came out as a ‘Miracle Mother’.

Striking balance in life

When my kids were little, I worked full time and did not really get the time to think about balance. I just had to get on with it; kids, their activities, profession, housework, time with extended family etc. It was important for me to be present in both the roles, mother & professional. Having my mom, dad and other immediate family members at my side helped me immensely. When I needed help, they obliged, without hesitation. It took ‘the village’ to help me raise my children and I guess that is how my life balanced itself out.

Miracle moms stand apart

All moms are miracle moms. Every mother I know in my generation had to endure so much. The household duties were primarily the mom’s, plus she worked, all while teaching, caring, loving her children, not to mention in many cases, taking care of extended family members along with her husband. I feel mothers everywhere should be applauded for everything they do. My inspiration and empowerment came from my mother who was the hardest working person I know.

Spotlight on the miracle moms

Becoming a mom was my biggest accomplishment in life and I hope to inspire women and young couples to open their minds to adoption as well as break the stigma in our community about adoption. My book is not a ‘how to’ book on adoption. It can however make a couple feel the positivity that they didn’t have before to take action and adopt a child. I’m hoping that a couple who is unable to conceive will read my book and realize that there is a ‘light’ at the end of the infertility tunnel and that ‘light’ is adoption. Their life can be fulfilled as mine is. Since I launched my book, I have had an overwhelming positive response from my family and friends, including my own sisters who knew what my journey was like but did not know the depth of what I went through. I was pleasantly surprised to see my book went to number one on Amazon in the adoption category, for the first 2 weeks of release.

MOTHERS TEACH uS THAT THE GREATEST ACHIEvEMENTS IN LIFE COME FROM THE WILLINGNESS TO kEEP GOING, EvEN WHEN THE GOING GETS TOuGH

Rewarding part of being a mom

I feel my children make life most rewarding for me. I am privileged to receive their unconditional love which makes me feel fulfilled and extremely content.

Feeling of being a miracle mom

Running two corporations and managing three young children is no less than a miracle in itself. God strengthens me throughout my daily life. Ensuring that my children are dropped off and picked up on time while running to meet clients at the same time can be a rather demanding task. Preparing their breakfast, packing lunches then getting ready myself for the day ahead has its own challenges. However, sharing love restores the joy and peace and creates a bond. Miracle Mom is a platform where the magic of motherhood is strengthened by science of love, joy, and harmony. Giving each child quality time while juggling your everyday life hustle is a calling of motherhood.

My personal Miracle Mom story is the birth of my third child Arzoi. While pregnant with Arzoi, I was quite ill. My condition became worse and I was hospitalized during most of the pregnancy. At 30 weeks of the pregnancy, I was told that only one can survive, either the child or myself. At 34 weeks, I was told that my child will be born with no brain development and will be handicapped for life. I trusted God and not only are we both alive but I am blessed with a healthy, gorgeous, loving and naughty girl. She is my miracle child which makes me a “Miracle Mom.” Holding her everyday makes my faith stronger and my joy complete.

Striking balance in life

Setting priorities and boundaries makes it all easy. I am fortunate to work around my children’s school schedule that helps me set boundaries. My children come before my businesses.

Qualities of a miracle mom

I successfully manage two corporations and three children. Playing different roles as a CEO and a mother on a daily basis while always giving unconditionally yet expecting very little is my biggest strength. Being the disciplinary parent, I may not be liked but I must empower them with the right choices to make in life. Sometimes being strong-headed also means that I must provide solutions to children’s issues and questions or family related matters along with handling all of my business matters.

Miracle mom stands apart

A miracle mom stands apart with her resilience and forgiveness. That should be the mantra for every woman out there!

Spotlight on the miracle moms

I hope my story would inspire other working moms that if I can, they can too. Women are a powerhouse. Everything is within us. We can manage things wonderfully as we are blessed with the acumen to do that! My children are my biggest support in my walk of philanthropy. I include them in most of my community involvement. I urge all moms in all walks of life to include your children in your endeavors and make them a part of your daily lives as you are in theirs. Children learn from us and we must engrain good virtues in them at a young age and I’m trying my best to do that in any way that I can as I am sure so are others.

A MOTHER’S STRENGTH IS LIkE A DIAMOND, uNBREAkABLE, PRECIOuS AND BRILLIANT

Rewarding part of being a mom

The most rewarding part of being a mom is the unconditional love and bond that I share with my girls Nya & Jaya. Seeing them grow, learn, and succeed brings me immense joy and fulfillment. The ability to nurture and guide them, watch them develop into kind, compassionate individuals, and create lasting memories together is truly priceless. Being a mom allows me to experience the purest form of love and witnessing their happiness and well-being is the greatest reward of all.

Feeling of being a miracle mom

One of the most powerful moments that made me feel like a ‘Miracle Mom’ was when my child faced a period of emotional turmoil due to some children at her school. She was navigating through difficult challenges and struggling to her their way. As a mother, I became her pillar of strength and support, offering a listening ear, a comforting embrace, and unwavering love. During those times, I witnessed the transformative power of a mother’s presence and guidance. I helped my daughter navigate her emotions, and overcome her obstacles. Seeing her find inner peace, self-acceptance, and a renewed sense of hope was a deeply rewarding experience. In that moment, I felt like a ‘Miracle Mom’ because I was able to provide the love, understanding, and support that enabled my child to weather the storm and emerge as a more empowered and confident individual. It was a reminder of the profound impact a mother’s love and nurturing can have on a child’s journey towards healing and growth.

Striking balance in life

Balancing motherhood with my professional life is a top priority for me. I believe in setting clear boundaries and prioritizing tasks effectively. This involves effective time management, delegation where necessary, and maintaining open communication with my colleagues and husband. I make sure to set realistic goals and expectations for both my work and family responsibilities to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, I am proactive in seeking support from my partner.

I believe in the importance of self-care and taking time for myself to recharge. This allows me to be present and productive in both roles. ultimately, finding a balance between being a mom and pursuing my career is a continuous process of learning and adapting, but one that I am committed to managing effectively.

Qualities of a miracle mom

My professional, political, and parental roles highlight my adeptness at managing challenges across various aspects of my life. Running for MLA for Surrey Cloverdale with the Conservative Party of BC while juggling full-time work, campaigning, familial duties, and friendships underscores my determination, leadership abilities, and dedication to community betterment. Emulating Miracle Mom’s strength and resilience, I remain composed under pressure, make timely decisions, and foster teamwork to achieve shared objectives. Despite obstacles, I persist in staying focused on my goals.

In my personal sphere, I exhibit resilience by harmonizing work and family obligations. Similar to a ‘Miracle Mom’, I prioritize my family’s welfare while excelling in my career through effective time management, boundary setting, and seeking assistance when necessary. Overall, my capacity to adapt to change, persevere through challenges, and uphold a positive outlook mirrors the strength and resilience embodied by a ‘Miracle Mom’. These experiences have molded me into a resilient and versatile individual, both in my personal and professional capacities.

Miracle moms stand apart

I believe what sets a ‘Miracle Mom’ apart as a symbol of inspiration and empowerment for women everywhere is our ability to embody strength, resilience, and compassion in the face of adversity. Despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles, miracle moms remain unwavering in their determination to overcome hurdles and provide for their families. Our story resonates with women from all walks of life because it reflects the struggles and triumphs that many women experience on a daily basis. A miracle mom’s resilience in the face of adversity serves as a reminder that obstacles can be defeated with perseverance and a positive mindset.

Being a part of this cover story provides a platform to amplify the narratives of women like myself, who embody exceptional strength and resilience in the face of challenges. By sharing our story and highlighting our journey, we can shed light on the untold experiences of women who navigate adversities with grace and determination. This cover story serves as a powerful tool to raise awareness about the diverse struggles and triumphs of women like myself who juggle multiple roles and responsibilities. It highlights the inner strength and resilience that women possess, inspiring others to recognize and celebrate the resilience of women in their communities.

There are so many rewarding parts of being a mom in my life and it is hard for me to pick one. However, there was a moment when I had shingles in my eye, and it was contagious. I told both of my sons that they could not come to my room, and they started crying and said nothing will happen to us, but we cannot leave you alone in the room. They brought chairs, kept them outside the door, sat there and took great care of me whenever I needed any help. I feel so blessed to have two kind, helpful, caring, and respectful children.

Feeling of being a miracle mom

Whenever children from the neighborhood come to play with my kids and if anyone gets hurt, they don’t go to their mothers instead they all run and knock on my door and tell me that someone is hurt. I run outside to see them, pick them up from the ground, give them a big hug, clean them, and I bandage the wounds. Most of the time they say, “Auntie, you have magic in your hands” and that is when I feel like a miracle mom.

Striking balance in life

I am a miracle mom because whatever I cook at home, that’s what we all eat. I plan and make a schedule ahead of time and finish all the chores. During the time of Covid, I taught my children how to cook simple food and do the dishes. So now, I assign chores to all of us, and we all work as a team and help each other to keep a balance. I volunteer when my kids are at school, and I work part-time on the weekends when my husband is home. Sometimes I work from home. I also strongly believe that listening to positive, motivational, and spiritual affirmations along with meditating daily has played the biggest role in my life and helped me get through so many ups and downs.

Spotlight on the miracle moms

I believe in God and his powers. I call him Baba, as soon as I wake up in the morning, I say Baba, thank you for being with us, helping us, protecting us, and guiding us all the time to fulfill our soul’s mission, path and purpose. I cook food, clean the house, wash the dishes, do laundry, and pay bills on time. I drop off my kids at school and pick them up. I love gardening and, in the summer, I spend at least two hours every day growing fresh vegetables for my family, friends and neighbors. I renovated my home by changing old doors, trims, baseboards, and floors with my 14-year-old son’s help. When my elder son helped me to renovate, my younger son made food for us. I pressure wash my home every year. There is nothing impossible for me because possible is hidden in impossible. I believe if I can do all these things then every mom can do it because we are all ‘Powerful and Miracle Moms’.

A WOMAN WITH uNWAvERING COMMITMENT TO ACHIEvING HER GOALS

A MOTHER’S LOvE AND ENCOuRAGEMENT CAN LIGHT THE WAY IN EvEN THE DARkEST OF TIMES

Rewarding part of being a mom

For me, the most rewarding part is witnessing the growth and development of my children. Seeing them achieve milestones, learn new things, and become their own person brings me immense joy. Additionally, the love and bond shared between a mother and her child can be incredibly fulfilling and meaningful. The sense of purpose and fulfillment that comes from nurturing and caring for another human being is unparalleled.

Striking balance in life

Balancing motherhood with a professional career requires setting priorities, boundaries, and effective time management. Establish clear boundaries with work and communicate your availability. It requires patience, flexibility and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances. utilize tools for organization and delegate tasks when necessary. Embrace flexibility, prioritize self-care, and build a support system. Focus on quality time with your children and maintain a clutter-free environment for increased productivity. By integrating personal and professional responsibilities, you can achieve a fulfilling and balanced life as both a mom and a professional.

Qualities of a miracle mom

I see myself reflected in Miracle Mom’s strength and resilience through our ability to overcome challenges with determination and perseverance. Like any miracle mom, I’ve faced obstacles in life, but I’ve found the inner strength to keep going, even when things seemed difficult or impossible. We draw upon our resilience to navigate tough situations and emerge stronger on the other side. Whether it is juggling multiple responsibilities or dealing with unexpected setbacks, we share a determination to push through and thrive. Strong women are not born, they are made by the storms they walk through.

Miracle mom stands apart

A miracle mom stands out as a symbol of inspiration and empowerment for women everywhere due to her ability to overcome adversity with grace and resilience. Her story serves as a reminder that strength can be found in the face of challenges, and that setbacks can be opportunities for growth. By sharing her journey, a miracle mom inspires others to persevere in the face of adversity and to believe in their own inner strength. She embodies the idea that women can achieve anything they set their minds on, and her story resonates with people from all walks of life, instilling hope and courage in those who may be facing their own obstacles. ultimately, a miracle mom’s authenticity, perseverance, and unwavering spirit make her a beacon of empowerment for women everywhere.

Spotlight on the miracle moms

While I have encountered various adversities in life, I’d like to take this opportunity to share one particular experience from 18 months ago.

My near-death experience in 2022, from pulmonary embolisms and cardiac tamponade is a profound chapter in my journey, revealing the resilience and strength like any other miracle mom would possess in the face of life-threatening challenges. It is a stark reminder of life’s fragility and the remarkable power of the human spirit to defy the odds.

In the depths of my struggle, there was a moment where the veil between life and death seemed thin, and it was then that I experienced a spiritual intervention. A guiding presence from beyond seemed to reach out and bring me back from the other side. It was a profound and transformative experience, imbued with a sense of divine purpose and protection.

Navigating through the trauma of pulmonary embolism and cardiac tamponade demanded every ounce of resilience within me. Yet, alongside my own determination, there was a spiritual force at work — a force that refused to let me slip away, but instead lifted me up and carried me through the darkest of nights. The gravity of my condition was underscored by the fact that I code blued not once, but twice. These critical moments brought the urgency of my situation into stark relief, yet through it all, I clung to hope and fought fiercely for my life. Despite the dire circumstances, I refused to succumb to despair, fueled by the unwavering faith instilled within me by generations past. Against all medical expectations, I emerged victorious, a testament to the resilience that courses through my veins, both human and divine.

Sharing my story as part of this cover feature offers a unique platform to shed light on the strength and resilience of women like me who have stared death in the face and emerged stronger for it. It is a chance to inspire others facing their own battles, showing them that even in the darkest moments, there is a light of hope fueled by inner strength, resilience, and the guiding hand of the divine.

Through my journey, I hope to raise awareness about the power we hold within ourselves, both human and spiritual, to overcome life’s greatest challenges. My experience serves as a beacon of hope, reminding others of their own potential to conquer adversity with courage, grace, and unwavering faith, guided by the loving spirits of those who came before us.

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Vancouver on Saturday, April 13, to celebrate Vaisakhi with a day full of traditional music, folk dance, and scrumptious food. Vaisakhi celebration is also marked by colorful processions. It displays the practice of serving free meals to the community in acts of sewa and langar, two significant aspects of the Sikh religion.

Vaisakhi marks the first harvest and the coming of a new year, according to the Vancouver Khalsa Diwan Society, which organizes the parade. For Sikhs, it also marks the creation of the order of the Khalsa in 1699 — a defining moment in Sikh history which gave the Sikh faith its final form.

The event also drew a number of politicians including Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Premier David Eby.

Premier David Eby and NDP MLAs Celebrate Eid with the Muslim community in Surrey

On April 17, The BC Premier and MLA’s Honorable Minister Bruce Ralston, Honorable Minister Harry Bains, MLA Jagrup Brar, MLA Mike Starchuk, Honorable Minister MLA Rachna Singh, MLA Jinny Sims, and MLA Garry Begg hosted an Eid al-Fitr celebration at Bombay Banquet Hall, Surrey.

Hundreds of Muslim community members joined on this occasion. The program started with the Holy Quran recitation by Shaikh Hafeez Haris, he also summarized the month of Ramadan blessings.

Premier David Eby said “I want to thank my colleagues for organizing this beautiful event to celebrate the end of Ramadan, you are an amazing diverse community in such a fast-growing city, Surrey. I want to thank Shaikh Hafeez Haris for the introduction to the spiritual context of today’s event and for the reflections. This is not a typical eve for the Muslim community, it is a difficult time when you are breaking your fast since it’s hard not to think about all of the people in Palestine who were so hungry, right now. To think about people in the world who are struggling with the lengthening shadows of war, it reflects on the desperate need for more compassion and love in this world.”

He added, “I think it just reinforces for British Columbians how fortunate we are to have a growing and thriving Muslim community, and the community’s contributions to business, academics, and science. In charities to support, there are such remarkable contributions of the Muslim community worldwide. I wanted to thank you for your remarkable efforts.”

know about the sPrIngtIme allergIes

Pollen Allergy season in Vancouver has started earlier this year because of the warm winter and above average springtime temperatures. Here are some important details to help you navigate the season of springtime allergies.

Cont. from last edition

4If high pollen counts are forecasted, start taking allergy medications before your symptoms start.

4Close doors and windows at night or any other time when pollen counts are high.

4Avoid outdoor activity in the early morning when pollen counts are highest.

Keep indoor air clean

There’s no miracle product that can eliminate all allergens from the air in your home, but these suggestions may help:

4Use the air conditioning in your house and car.

4If you have forced air heating or air conditioning in your house, use high-efficiency filters and follow

regular maintenance schedules.

4Keep indoor air dry with a dehumidifier.

4Use a portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your bedroom.

4Clean floors often with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter.

Try over-the-counter remedies. Several types of nonprescription medications can help ease allergy symptoms. They include:

4Oral antihistamines. Antihistamines can help relieve sneezing, itching, a runny nose and watery eyes. Examples of oral antihistamines include loratadine (Claritin, Alavert), Cetirizine (Zyrtec Allergy) and fexofenadine (Allegra Allergy).

4Decongestants. Oral decongestants such as pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, Afrinol, others) can provide temporary relief from nasal stuffiness. Decongestants also come in nasal sprays, such as oxymetazoline (Afrin) and phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine). Only use nasal decongestants for

a few days in a row. Longer-term use of decongestant nasal sprays can actually worsen symptoms (rebound congestion).

4Nasal spray. Cromolyn sodium nasal spray can ease allergy symptoms and doesn’t have serious side effects, though it’s most effective when you begin using it before your symptoms. You may need a steroid nasal spray if the condition worsens.

Immunotherapy

4Allergy shots are sometimes necessary if allergy symptoms are worse.

4SLIT: SubLingual Immunotherapy with Grastek or oral air as per your Allergist advice.

4See your health care provider before use of any medication.

Emotional skincare: Where beauty meets mental

For generations, the beauty industry has focused on achieving flawless skin, often with a product-centric approach.

our skin held the key to not just outward beauty, but also internal well-being? Enter the exciting realm of emotional skincare, a movement that bridges the gap between beauty and mental health, recognizing the profound connection

This shift is supported by growing scientific evidence. Psychodermatology, a branch of dermatology that explores the mind-skin connection, reveals how stress, anxiety, and depression can manifest in skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Conversely, healthy skin-care practices can positively impact our mood and emotional well-being.

So, how can we embrace emotional skincare?

Here are some key aspects: Move beyond simply applying products.

Approach your skincare routine as a mindful self-care ritual. Focus on your breath, be present in the moment, and connect with your senses. This creates a space for relaxation and reduces stress, which benefits your skin. Instead of chasing trends or unrealistic beauty standards, prioritize healthy functioning skin. Consult a dermatologist to understand your skin type and specific needs, and choose products accordingly. Remember, healthy skin doesn’t have to be “flawless.”

Gently massage your face while applying products to calm and reduce stress hormones. Facial massage can also

improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, both beneficial for skin health and mental health.

While products can play a significant role, emotional skincare is about holistic well-being. Prioritize quality sleep, manage stress through activities like yoga or meditation and nourish your body with healthy foods. Remember, true beauty radiates from within.

Society often bombards us with unrealistic beauty ideals. Instead, cultivate selfcompassion and acceptance. Celebrate your unique skin, scars, and all. This shift in perspective can significantly improve your mental health and your relationship with your skin.

Recent developments in emotional skincare:

The landscape of wellness and self-care is constantly evolving, and skincare brands are at the forefront of this movement, integrating holistic practices into their products and messaging. This mind-body connection, explored through the lens of Psychodermatology, is revolutionizing how we approach skin health.

One key development lies in the rise of personalized skincare. By addressing individual skin concerns and emotional needs, brands

empower individuals to create a connection with their routines.

Technology further empowers informed self-care through teledermatology, providing convenient online access to dermatological expertise. This removes barriers and fosters a deeper understanding of individual skin needs.

Mood science plays a crucial role in this conversation, as research increasingly reveals how emotions can impact our skin’s health. Stress, for instance, can manifest as breakouts or exacerbate existing conditions. To address this, brands are incorporating aromatherapy into their offerings. Essential oils, with their moodboosting and calming properties, offer a natural approach to promoting emotional wellbeing and radiant skin.

Remember, true beauty radiates from a place of self-love and acceptance, and emotional skincare is a powerful tool to help you get there.

One of the safest places to visit in the world, Singapore is a small country with a high level of law and order. Singapore is a melting pot of different cultures, cuisines, and ethnicities. The “Lion City,” as it’s known, is filled with delectable culinary experiences, cutting-edge accommodations, and an exciting nightlife. It is a spotlessly clean country and offers numerous choices to its visitors from art galleries, museums, and top-notch shopping centers to vast green spaces. With loads of fun activities and vibrant places to visit, Singapore makes an ideal travel destination for people of all age groups. It is extremely safe, has an affordable public transport system, and it offers many child-friendly attractions too. Here is a guide to navigate through this vibrant country effortlessly.

Must visit local attractions:

Gardens by the bay: The waterfront Heritage Gardens will leave you in awe with its botanical representation of Indian, Chinese, Malay, and Colonial themes. The Flower Dome exudes radiance, with a temperature-controlled area and a changing display of flora from the Mediterranean regions.

Singapore Zoo: It is a must-visit for nature lovers since it is one of the best rainforest zoos in the world. A visit here will let you catch a glimpse of the over 2,800 animals from 300 species— including crocodiles, Malayan tapirs, and white tigers. We are sure that your kids will love a visit to this incredible place.

Marina Bay: With the onset of splendid modern architecture, world-class hotels, and a plethora of new bars and restaurants in recent years, the Marina Bay area has truly matured. Because of its closeness to the Central Business District, this is a famous area for business visitors, and the abundance of entertainment options assure that general tourists flock to the area as well.

Sentosa Island: Sentosa is home to a slew of world-class tourist spots and beachfront resorts. With a 24-hour casino and Southeast Asia’s only Universal Studios theme park, the opening of Resorts World Sentosa in 2010 raised the bar for island entertainment to new heights. The city’s sun worshippers and beach-sport enthusiasts flock to the city’s southern beaches – Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong – on weekends, while beachside bars pump out thumping tunes.

Haji Lane: Narrow streets lined with adorable shops, kitschy cafes, and chill bars that exude major indie vibes whether it’s daylight or nightfall. That would be Haji Lane for you. Not to mention the vibrant and eye-catching graffiti walls that make this neighborhood stand out like no other.

Singapore: A food lover’s paradise

For many people traveling can be a culinary adventure, but it can also be a challenge. From language barriers to cultural differences, navigating unfamiliar food landscapes can be difficult. This can make travel stressful and limit the enjoyment of new experiences. But if you are visiting Singapore, that’s one less thing to worry about. Whether you are a hardcore non-vegetarian or have dietary restrictions, Singapore offers a plethora of options for every person’s need and preference.

How to go around

The best way to travel around Singapore is by its mass transit system. The modern transport system covers the entire island with a network of light and clean and speedy underground rail lines. These railways are the best way to get around the country for older travellers, as all of the stations and trains are operational with accessibility features like lifts, escalators, ramps and handrails.

W for Women, Workout, and Wellbeing!

Mothers are the epitome of unconditional love, care, and support.

Their kind nurturing and constant guidance helps us understand right from wrong and gives us the strength to take on the world. However, for a woman, the transition to motherhood is associated with declines in physical activity since they are constantly juggling between a million tasks. This decline in the levels of physical activity is usually seen in most working mothers, since they have to balance the competing interests of work and family life. Ultimately, exercise often takes a backseat to more seemingly pressing concerns.

A mother’s fitness is crucial!

It is essential to know that the importance of a mother’s fitness in a family is multifaceted and plays a crucial role in the overall well-being of the family. Physical fitness ensures that mothers have the stamina and energy required to manage the diverse responsibilities of running a household, taking care of children, and participating in various family activities.

The importance of a mother’s fitness in an family cannot be overstated. It not only contributes to her personal well-being but also has far-reaching positive effects on the entire family, influencing both physical and emotional aspects of family life. While your workouts help burn away the calories, it is important to keep in mind the choices you make with your food and the detrimental effects that bad nutritional choices can have on the body in the years to come.

Conscious efforts towards mental health

Most women these days have consciously started paying more attention to not just their physical health but mental health as well. Just like we follow a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine for physical fitness we need to have a healthy mental diet of positive thoughts, emotions and regular breathing exercise to ensure mental wellbeing.

The truth is that our body and mind are not separate identities, they are one. Our mind is our subtle self while our bodies are the gross self. So make sure to take right care for both these important pillars of your identity.

May 2024 www. entertainmentmagazine.ca 56

Here are some simple points to keep in mind for overall well being:

Engage in resistance training

Resistance training or weight training can help women improve their physical appearance, increase their muscle mass, and improve their overall strength. In addition, it can boost their metabolism, which can help them burn fat and maintain a healthy weight.

Eat your proteins and iron rich food

Protein is not just for those who want to build muscle. It is a necessary macronutrient which is important for the body to recover well and keep your muscles and joints strong. Foods high in protein include lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, and nuts. It is also completely okay to include whey protein supplements if you are not able to meet your protein requirements through a regular diet.

Additionally, a woman must consume foods rich in Iron. Iron is essential for women’s health, as women lose iron during menstruation. Iron-rich foods include red meat, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, spinach, and fortified cereals.

Get regular health screenings

Regular health screenings are crucial for women’s health. Women should get regular checkups and screenings for conditions such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and osteoporosis. Women should also get regular cholesterol and blood pressure checks, and other recommended screenings based on age and personal risk factors.

It’s okay to workout during your periods

Contrary to popular belief, women do not necessarily have to skip exercise due to their menstrual cycle, although it is important to be aware of how to approach training around your time of the month. Higher intensity exercises can be performed during your follicular phase and you can reduce the intensity as the peak of the luteal phase arrives. Exercise has also shown to relieve certain PMS symptoms like cramps. This could however be subjective to each one.

Fit and fabulous!

Moms into fitness, those able to balance being a busy mom with their workout schedule, are real role models in so many ways. Fitness is all about discipline and juggling a million chores, family, kids and still managing to look fit and fabulous – that is something commendable. Meet our fit and fabulous mom Preeti Maan, a 48-year-old woman who leads a healthy lifestyle while looking after her family as well as her career. She feels “It’s never too late to get in shape and reap the health benefits of physical fitness.”

P

reeti started her fitness journey a few years ago and the results made her fall in love with the idea of being fit.

Mother to two children, Harmanjot 27, and Simranjot 25, Preeti believes that increasing physical activity can do miracles for your body. “Your health should be a priority and you should look after yourself. You will be better to your family when you lead a healthy lifestyle. For example, if work is a priority for a short period of time and as a result you can’t do any sport, then make sure to go for healthy food options.”

Preeti’s cousin pushed her into modeling for her homegrown Australian brand – CocobyBawa – and that was the beginning of Preeti’s incredible modeling career. She hasn’t looked back ever since.

Preeti takes her inspiration from Sandy Dosanjh, who is a style icon, a celebrity, a mother and a fitness expert. Sandy has transformed many women like Preeti who were once just working their 9 to 5 jobs into a fitness pro.

Besides helping with weight loss or lean muscle gain, Sandy believes that a fitness regime also organizes your nutrition intake which eventually improves mental and emotional health. “When women learn the proper health and fitness techniques it can impact the overall health of a family. You will notice that if a mother is fit or health conscious, her children will be too.” In Sandy’s case both her children see their parents work so hard to maintain a healthy body and they too get inspired.

When I talk about motherhood, I should start with myself. My mother is my root, my foundation. She planted the seed of ‘belief’ in my heart and soul. Ever since then, I have kept it as the foundation of my life. It is her wisdom and knowledge that has made me what I am today. I will forever be grateful to her and remember her until the last breath of my life.

I believe motherhood is a choice you make every day. It is all about putting someone else’s happiness and well-being ahead of your own. Motherhood can feel like participating in a race, without a finish line. Exhausting and exhilarating all at once. There’s no greater good in all of the world than a mother. The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation. I think, as a mother you must practice the following mantras in life:

1) Always believe in yourself and learn from your elders and impart all that gathered knowledge to your children.

2) Always try to stay strong mentally, physically and emotionally and teach the same to your children.

3) Never make fun of anyone, never say anything to make them feel down and disrespected.

4) Never give up, try your best to learn new things that can benefit and help others.

5) Always be grateful and thankful to God for what you have.

6) Always work hard as much as you can and teach the same to your kids. Learn as many things as you can and keep them in practice.

7) Always try to stay humble and confident in any kind of situation and make sure to teach the same to your kids .

8) Be kind to everyone no matter the person and teach your kids the power of empathy, kindness and love. Always try to keep smiling and make others smile too.

9) Always have open conversations in the family.

10) Try to have meals together as a family and try to talk about each other’s day. Love each other regardless of any differences that may occur at any point in life. Remember, children are the most beautiful and important treasure for mothers. She is always ready to do anything for them, anytime of the day.

Quick recipe for an indulgent Brownie

41/3 cup cocoa powder

4Pinch of salt

41/2 cup melted butter

41/2 cup sugar, if you want more you can put 3/4 cup

42 eggs

41 teaspoon vanilla

Mix all the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, mix butter and sugar. Add vanilla and eggs and mix them all together nicely. Then mix the dry ingredients along with the wet ingredients that you had in the separate bowl. Mix them well together with a spatula, add 1/4 cup chocolate chips or crumble chocolate (it’s optional) and add a handful of nuts if you like (that is optional too). Put all this in a 8” by 8” small pan that has been greased well. Bake in a preheated oven at 340 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.

Being a mother can be a fulfilling yet a very intimidating experience. To be a parent means trying to help the child grow into a mature human being.

Creating a safe space

YTrying To shield T he child from negaT ivi T y is T ypical. Bu T children musT undersTand failure wi T hou T le TT ing it overshadow their minds.

ou want to ensure the child does not get trapped in your own trial & error and emotional baggage. Many parents have issues of their own. Whatever the trouble, this influences their parenting style.

Thus, it is vital to set up a protected environment for children to connect with you. It helps the child become an emotionally secure individual. It is also essential to be emotionally present as the child’s future as an adult depends crucially on this. Here are a few ways to develop the right environment that naturally allows the child to connect with their mothers.

Keep an open relationship with your children This pointer allows mothers to connect with the child & give

Emotionally

them a safe space to deal with life’s journey better. When children can converse with their parents about anything under the sun, they quickly identify that such an open relationship helps them become mature individuals and is the key to good living or resolving issues. It teaches them about honesty, dealing with discomfort, and not keeping secrets in relationships. Parents also need to tell their children that they are always with them. This unconditional love becomes the child’s protective field in dealing with negative or fearful situations.

Dismissing emotions

Asking the child to bear with their troubles on their own makes them more secretive and become broken from inside.

It can be a start for the child’s trust issues & anxiety and can become a demon to deal with when grown up. If the child is going through an emotion, parents must walk with & help them deal with it better. Never allow the child to deal with it or dismissively tell them to walk through it. The issue might seem small for the parents but is a big deal for the child. Children then learn to deal with similar situations in a better fashion and become good at resolving hurdles.

Avoid being judgmental and overreacting to situations

space for kids to open up Emotionally

These two factors can cause maximum damage to the parentchild relationship. Children are incapable of understanding the gravity of situations at times and can be fearful of things. Whatever the case, parents must not judge their child or overreact. Resolve issues with a simple explanation that helps the child feel safe & deal with them better. These can be a big life lessons for the children.

Recognizing the issues & sympathizing

When parents authenticate anything the child shares sympathetically, the child knows that the relationship is a

safe one wherein they are allowed to share anything without fear. It does not automatically mean the parents agree with everything. It only means that the parent understands the situation and the resultant outbreak. It allows parents to share views and give their opinion. It can help if they share their own experiences to relate to their children. All this aids parents in teaching positive stuff that stays with the children in the longer run.

Teach them about failure

Trying to shield the child from negativity is typical. But children must understand failure without letting it overshadow their minds. Parents need to let their children realize that this failure can become a stepping stone towards better

things. Teach children about honest reflections and limitations. It makes children notice their flaws and rework them. They will keep on trying, learning & succeeding more healthily.

Help understand control & choices

It truly can help children comprehend the importance of control & making choices that can influence one’s life. This springboard to jump into adulthood gives them the life lesson of the cause & effect of their choice and proper life control. Of course, the parents must be there but in the shadows. Give honest advice if asked. Keep the route open for any queries. Parents should show happiness in positive things and sympathize when things go wrong.

Amar Singh Chamkila: Diljit, Parineeti help perfectly execute a masterpiece crafted by Imtiaz Ali

Director: Imtiaz Ali

Writers: Imtiaz Ali, Sajid Ali

Cast: Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra, Apinderdeep Singh

Music: A.R. Rahman

Run time: 2 hrs 26 mins

Rating: ****

Synopsis: The film follows the life of pop star duo Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur, whose songs that were social commentaries or devotionals became massive hits in the 80’s.

Review: Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila attempts to capture the essence of a legendary Punjabi singer who evades easy categorization. Murdered in 1988 at the age of 27 when he

was at the height of his career, Chamkila is an exemplar of the supernova who lives and dies for art.

Inspired by the goings-on around him, Chamkila wields his tumbi like a magic wand, bewitching local listeners as well as the Punjabi diaspora. Yet, his fame cannot shield him from the ire of militants, religious leaders and the police. Dosanjh, Chopra, and a few other singers perform Chamkila’s original songs in Punjabi, with the Hindi translations appearing on the screen. AR Rahman’s Punjabi pop-inflected Hindi soundtrack is woven into the musical-like saga. (Punjab is called Panjab throughout the movie.)

The hot-blooded account of a cold case includes animation, split screens and footage of the real Chamkila and Amarjot. There is enough archival material included in the film to make the heart yearn for a straight-up documentary.

The music video-level aesthetic creates enough momentum to distract from how mundane the movie turns out to be. The biopic is fixated on the explicit lyrics that put Chamkila on the top of charts and hit lists.

Amar Singh Chamkila gets hot under the collar about Chamkila’s unabashed lasciviousness while claiming to celebrate his liberated ways.

AR Rahman’s melodious tunes include Vida Karo, in which lyricist Irshad Kamil points to the hypocrisy of Chamkila’s world. But the movie itself can’t move beyond Chamkila as the

creator of dirty ditties.

Chamkila’s Dalit identity, the reason his earthy songs vaulted over socio-economic divisions, a sense of what else was happening in the music industry and Punjabi society at large – these barely concern the biopic’s makers. Instead, the film keeps looping back to the content of Chamkila’s music.

Clumsy montages feebly address the tricky timing of Chamkila’s ascent – when the movement to carve out an independent Khalistan was at its peak. The creators also showcased the romance between Chamkila and Amarjot, which grows in the back of crowded cars in which they are squashed with other travelers.

Initially coming off as a wideeyed novice who doesn’t know what has hit him, Chamkila begins to reveal his complex personality. Although Dosanjh looks a bit too urbane to play the rustic singer, the actor scores in the scenes where Chamkila stops pretending to be on the outside while amazing things keep happening to him. Dosanjh is also an effortless charmer, which works when Chamkila is tuning up the crowds.

Watch the film yourself and let the magic of Amar Singh Chamkila engulf your senses.

Western Community College (WCC) is soaring to new heights as the only International Air Transport Association (IATA) authorized training centre in Canada to offer IATA certified aviation training programs, other than the IATA itself. The IATA designs and develops training programs in all areas of airline operations applicable for all airlines globally, such as cabin crew training, cargo and logistics, air navigation and ground operations.

Western Community College’s new aviation training programs such as the cabin crew program are IATA certified, while their commercial and private pilot licenses, and night rating programs are Transport Canada certified. a vital component of our economy, directly employing approximately 160,000 people across the country,” said Sohail Mahmood Durrani, Head of Aviation Training at WCC.

On April 26, 2024, the SACH South Asian Community Hub Society hosted its first-ever “SACH a Worthy Cause” fundraising gala at Crown Palace Banquet Hall in Surrey. Drawing a crowd of over 500 attendees, the event saw many politicians, businesses, faith organizations, key social services and health leaders in attendance.

Thosts a magnificient fundraising gala with over 500 people in attendance SACH

hree SACH stories were shared by MLA and Parliamentary Secretary Aman Singh, Amar Randhawa, and Sumit Ahuja. The event started with a prayer and blessing by Kwantlen First Nations, Kevin Kelly. It was followed by two performances by the Wild Moccasin Dancers, David Whitebean and Shyama-Priya Singh, along with various other entertainment items.

During the event, the Honorable Minister Jennifer Whiteside announced a $100,000 funding commitment from the Government of British Columbia. The funding from the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions allows SACH to continue providing the vital outreach support that is culturally sensitive, linguistically appropriate, and familyoriented, for the individuals who need it the most.

One large donation came from the Pacific Hospitality Inc (PHI) for $25,000, amongst several other large donations. Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Khalsa Credit Union were noted as silver sponsors present at the event.

The donations that poured in overwhelmed the SACH team and Board. The generous community support and their interest to discuss issues of mental health and addictions show how important it is to create safe spaces to educate, advocate and collaborate.

“We’ve never been to a gala like this before.

We’ve never seen anything like this before in our community. The personal stories of healing and recovery that the speakers shared were so touching. We need more of these types of programs for the South Asian community. SACH is doing amazing work providing information for families who are dealing with and suffering from addiction, so that their loved ones can get help and treatment to get clean and live a healthy, happy life. We’re so happy to sponsor and donate to SACH a Worthy Cause!,” said Amarjit Samra, owner of A-Class Autobody & Glass.

“These conversations are never done openly,” said one faith leader to me from the Sikh community

who was inspired by the dry event where mocktails were served, “and it shows that you can still have an impact and a great time without alcohol,” said Harman Pandher, Board Chair.

“We became engaged with SACH because they represent the values of trust, care, and community building. We believe and support their vision to develop a community hub and so we are pleased to back their efforts with our donation,” said Sukhi Rai of PHI Hotel Group.

Board Member Bilal Cheema said, “Community is just a word. What instills life in this word is action; actions taken to uplift, empower and support one another. Community means

leaving no one behind. We are so fortunate to be surrounded by family, friends, volunteers, and our wonderful outreach staff who care and believe in breathing life into the word community through their actions every single day.”

“For years we have talked within the health, education, and social services sectors, of the need for services that are more holistic and integrated, to best support vulnerable communities,” advises Gary Thandi, SACH Board Member.

“I see SACH is not only a realization of this type of holistic, integrated service, but I believe it can serve as a model that can meet the needs of other diverse communities in our province,” he added.

“The community has shown us they support our vision, and they will step up with funding and volunteerism to support the cause. It’s very inspiring,” said Daljit Gill-Badesha, Executive Director.

SACH is a grassroots and largely volunteer run non-profit organization based in Surrey. Launched in 2020, it provides important community outreach and peer support services to help people in the South Asian community who are struggling and connects them to tailored and inlanguage mental health and addictions services, including counseling, harm reduction, food, housing, and victim and income assistance services.
