It is rightly said that, “A father sacrifices his needs to fulfill our wants.” Most dads just want to see their children be happy. They sacrifice a big portion of who they are to help keep not only their kids happy, but also their spouse happy. Dads drive a minivan instead of a fancy car to make sure everyone can fit in the same vehicle. They sit down and watch a movie with

their kids instead of watching their favorite team win an exciting cricket or soccer game. Dads have to make tough decisions. They have to keep a delicate balance. Here are some of the roles that a man takes up as soon as he becomes a father.

Embracing the essential roles of a devoted father: Fatherhood is a profound and transformative experience that goes beyond biological ties. Dads

play a pivotal role in the family, shaping the lives of their children and leaving a lasting impact on their development. A father’s guidance and presence are irreplaceable, creating a strong foundation for their children to thrive. We have listed some of the key roles that fathers embody, highlighting the significance of their contributions and the responsibilities they hold.

The protector

A father’s role as a protector is deeply embedded in his very being. He serves as a steadfast shield, diligently guarding his loved ones from harm and adversity, both physical and emotional. Fathers possess an innate instinct to prioritize the safety and well-being of their family, ensuring that their children feel secure and protected at all times. The role of father in our life cannot be explained in words. Whether it’s teaching their kids to

look both ways before crossing the street or comforting them during times of fear or distress, fathers stand tall as the guardians of their family’s peace and security.

The provider

A father’s unwavering dedication to meeting the financial needs of the family is a true testament to his commitment, unwavering love, and determination to provide a stable and nurturing environment. The responsibilities of a father are never-ending. They work tirelessly, often making selfless sacrifices and putting their own desires and aspirations on hold in order to ensure that their loved ones have a comfortable and secure life. From working long hours to pursuing additional opportunities for advancement, fathers go above and beyond to create a solid foundation upon which their families can thrive. Their efforts not only provide material necessities

but also demonstrate the value of hard work, perseverance, and responsibility to their children.

The teacher

Fathers are natural teachers, bestowing upon their children invaluable life lessons that will serve them for a lifetime. Through their guidance, dads instill crucial values such as resilience, discipline, and integrity. They serve as role models, shaping their children’s character and equipping them with the essential tools they need to navigate life’s inevitable challenges. From teaching them to tie their shoelaces to imparting wisdom about the importance of honesty and kindness, fathers play an integral role in shaping their children’s moral compass. Their words of wisdom, patience, and encouragement lay the foundation for their children’s personal growth, setting them on a path toward success and fulfillment.

June 2024 www. entertainmentmagazine.ca 18

The mentor

A father’s role as a mentor extends far beyond merely teaching life lessons. Dads inspire their children, nurturing their dreams and aspirations. They provide unwavering guidance and support, encouraging their little ones to reach for the stars and pursue their passions. A father’s belief in his child’s potential can ignite an inner fire within them, propelling them towards remarkable achievements and personal growth. Whether it’s assisting with homework, offering career advice, or simply being a sounding board for their ideas and ambitions, fathers serve as invaluable mentors in their children’s lives. They instil confidence, offer guidance, and impart valuable insights based on their own experiences, paving the way for their children’s future success.

The friend

While mothers often embrace the nurturing role, dads bring a unique dynamic of friendship into the family. Dads are the ones who engage in playful roughhousing, share infectious laughter, and create lasting memories. They become the solid rock upon which their children can always lean, offering a listening ear, words of wisdom, and a comforting presence that fosters a deep sense of trust and friendship. Fathers engage in activities that build bonds and create lasting memories, whether it’s camping trips, playing catch in the backyard, or sharing a special hobby. Their friendship goes beyond the typical parent-child relationship, establishing a deep connection that is built on mutual respect, trust, and unconditional love.

The emotional anchor Fathers play a vital role in providing emotional stability and support within the family unit. They serve as the rock-solid shoulder to lean on during challenging times, offering reassurance, comfort, and a sense of security. Dads teach their children the importance of emotional intelligence, encouraging them to express their feelings and navigate complex emotions in a healthy and constructive manner. Whether it’s consoling a broken heart, offering guidance during difficult decisions, or simply being a listening ear, fathers provide a safe space for their children to share their thoughts, fears, and dreams. So, we can say that the role of father in the family cannot be explained in words.

The celebrant

Fathers are the ones who wholeheartedly celebrate their children’s achievements, both big and small. Whether it is enthusiastically cheering at sports events or applauding academic accomplishments, dads take immense pride in their children’s successes. Their unwavering support and genuine enthusiasm nurture their children’s self-confidence, self-worth, and sense of achievement. Fathers recognize the importance of acknowledging and celebrating milestones, no matter how small, as they understand the impact it has on their children’s motivation and self-esteem. Their encouraging words, warm hugs, and proud smiles create a sense of validation and affirmation, instilling a belief in their children’s abilities and fostering a lifelong drive for personal growth and success.

As we reflect on the importance of fathers and their multifaceted roles in our lives, let us remember to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for their unwavering love, guidance, and dedication. This Father’s Day, consider thoughtful gifts or gestures that celebrate the extraordinary fathers in our lives.

EMBRACING FATHERHOOD

A father who inspires his children everyday

With over 20 years of experience in marketing, sales, and business development, Surj Uppal is a seasoned leader and strategist who has worked with some of Canada's top organizations in various industries, i n c l u

Entertainment Magazine had the honor of talking to Surj, and knowing the secret behind him being such a great father for his children. Here's what Surj had to say:

What inspired you to embrace the role of a modern dad and what does it mean to you?

For me, embracing the role of a current day father means to balance the traditional Sikh roots of my parents with the opportunities that life in Canada provides. This means passing on the humble, hard working eternal lessons to my two sons, but also trying to guide them in a more complex, technological driven world here in Canada. It was important to me to instill principles of strength, respect, integrity and intelligence so they can be contributing members of our community.

How do you balance your career, personal life, and fatherhood responsibilities in today's fast-paced world?

As my parents spent most of my childhood working, I was fortunate to have a work-life balance that allowed me to coach their soccer teams from when they were 5 to 18 years old as part of the South Delta United soccer club. Part of this was to spend more time with them and keep them off their smartphones, or other negative influences, and also, to positively influence their teammates on their soccer team. I try to stay connected with them through sport, by coaching their teams, to show how someone in their 40’s can stay active and healthy by still playing in a men’s league and to give back to the club as a Board Member for South Delta United.

Although they are older now, it was always my priority to take Sajan and Jovan to their first day of school and last day of school every year so we could spend milestone days together. Unlike how I was raised, we are not rushing our 19 and 21 year old sons to jump into University or College until they are sure what they want to study. But like when I was a kid, they also have spent time on construction sites or helping out in the family business so they understand if they are not going to school, they have to work. Another priority is to teach them about worthy heroes like Terry Fox, respect and cherish their grandparents, and to have a sense of humor to handle whatever life throws at them.

Like me, they are both mama's boys and I am a lucky husband that has been married to my wife Ranbir for 25 years. My belief is our ultimate legacy is the children we leave behind so I continue to provide teaching moments whenever possible. My sons might suggest it’s a little too often.

Striving to be the best dad

Harsh Arora is a finance professional with nearly two decades of experience. He currently works as a Mobile Mortgage Specialist with TD Canada Trust and has helped over 300 families to fulfill their dream of owning a real estate property in Canada. Team South Asian Entertainment Magazine had the honor of talking to Harsh and knowing about what fatherhood means to him. Here's what he has to say:

What inspired you to embrace the role of a modern dad and what does it mean to you?

“Modern dad” – That is an intriguing term. The very essence of fatherhood has been to give the best of the love and facilities to kids and the family and shall remain the same eternally. I, as a millennial, just top it up with some contemporary aspects of 21st century and I call myself a partially modern dad, given my strong belief in some of the conventional methods / aspects of life.

My inspiration is my late father who by his sheer grit moved mountains only to provide the best of everything not only to immediate family but to an extended family as well and that too despite some severe economic hardships. I owe my success to the values, ethics and attitude of not giving up, as he nurtured us in the same manner while raising the family.

How do you balance your career, personal life, and fatherhood responsibilities in today's fast-paced world?

My generation has witnessed one of the fastest transformations ever

a n d t h a t h a s i m p a c t e d m a n y f

n s entertainment, activities, health and education. At the same time fatherhood and even parenting has become as convoluted as it can ever be. Fathers' are no longer responsible for providing financial resources only but are gravitating deeper towards the nonfinancial aspects of raising kids and that demands a good chunk of time. Technological and cultural changes not only affected the kids’ education and health but have actually created deep gaps in the mindset as well.

My father was a workaholic and that kind of hurted me at times despite everything he did for all of us Frankly speaking, I am workaholic too and that impacted my daughter's mindset, but I

Balancing demanding career needs and changing kids/ family requirements is a mammoth task. It's a need of an hour to ensure kids are happy and they become better humans. In the service industry its’ hard but I make sure to take a day off and enjoy it with my family. I

daughters’ activity and personal family time. This acts more like a stress buster for me and I can focus better on my work. Lastly, working hard and partying harder works best for me.

I would conclude to say that modern day fatherhood to me is to make my kid, first of all a great human-being and then a great professional.

father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way!

Gone are the days when mothers were seen as the only caretaker watching over children while fathers kept busy to earn a living. With the ever changing times and with the rising call for equal parenting, people are realizing just how important the role fathers play in children’s lives. It is a fact that mothers have a more dominant role in the first months and years of life; however, psychologists say a strong bond between fathers and their children is just as important for the kids’ well-being and psychoemotional development.

one’s parents – the first people we interact with; this is how we learn to function and survive in the world. The patterns a father’s behavior reflects dictates how his child relates to other people and how he looks at the world. By laying down the rules of conduct, fathers discipline their children. A father is the one who creates respect for every living being in his child. Not just this, it is widely seen that daughters also look upon her father to model further relationships in her life.

It is also proven that affectionate and supportive fathers considerably affect a child’s social as well as cognitive development. An involved father promotes inner growth and strength, inculcates in his child the values of justice and fairness. He teaches his child objectivity and the consequences of right and wrong.

re L ation SH i P redefining relationship with your children

The essence of a father-child relationship

It is beyond the shadow of a doubt that building a healthy and stable relationship with the child, when he is young, is very important for every father. Every child aspires to bond with his father, to feel worthy of receiving his love. It is a general tendency to grow up by imitating

Unlike over-protective mothers, fathers encourage risk-taking and let their child venture out. Thus, the child engenders independence, which better prepares him to face the challenges of life. It is a father’s imprints which makes his son either loving and gentle or strong and valiant. When fathers provide a feeling of emotional and physical security, children turn out to be more confident and outperform their peers. They also face fewer psychological problems in life.

Strengthening the bond of

June 2024 www. entertainmentmagazine.ca 26

relationship children

fatherhood and son

In life, we tend to invest time and money into the things we care about and when it comes to a father-child relationship, this principle is of utmost importance. However, the father-son relationship can be complex. Fathers and sons with widely different interests can find it hard to relate to one another. Sometimes, dads and sons feel competitive against one another. Other

situation, here are some key elements to creating and building a strong father-son relationship.

Set a good example

There are many things you can do to develop a strong bond with your son. Whether we realize it or not, sons learn about being a man primarily by watching their fathers. A father’s influence on their son’s personal development is often unseen but nonetheless real.

As young men watch their fathers interact with others including their partner, they learn about respect (or disrespect), about how men interact with others, and about how men should deal with conflict and differences. Understanding that a father’s influence on their son is unmatched will help you think more deeply about your relationship with your son and take your responsibility as a good role model seriously.

Here’s how you can be a good role model for your kids:

Spend time together and show them they are important

As a father, make sure that you allow for some one-on-one time with your son. This time together lets your son know that they’re important to you, especially if you make time for them amidst a very busy schedule. Carving out time together also communicates that they are a priority in your life and that you enjoy being with them. While they are young, you can engage in boisterous play outside, read books, build with legos, or play a game. Once they are older and have more defined interests, try to participate in the things they enjoy, too. Whether your son loves basketball or debate, find ways to get involved. Play hoops in the driveway or learn how to be a debate judge when they’re in high school. Some of your best memories will be of those times you spent together doing something they’re passionate about.

Develop shared interests and discover commonality

Father-son relationships can feel strained at times, especially if your interests appear to be

polar opposites. With a little effort, though, you can usually find something that you both find interesting. These shared interests allow you to discover some commonality while maximizing the time you spend together doing something you both enjoy. Finding common interests benefits your fatherson relationship in a number of ways. For instance, sharing an interest with someone allows you insight into who the person is. Common interests also become a vehicle for bonding by giving you something to talk about and do together that you both enjoy.

Work together on a project to create lasting memories

There is something magical for a boy about being involved in something bigger than themselves. Plus, these big, visible projects can really help strengthen a father and son bond. Some dads and sons build planter boxes, landscape a backyard, build a vacation cabin, or head off on a big summer biking vacation. Whatever it is, a bigger-than-life project done together can create a bond that will last a long time and make memories you will talk about together for decades.

To come up with a project you and your son can do together, think about what you both enjoy or community issues you are passionate about when developing a project. You can look for service opportunities, plan an adventure, remodel, or build something together.

Try to have a meaningful conversation or just try to listen

Starting from an early age, it’s important that fathers learn how to listen to their sons without judgment and without trying to fix things too soon. Doing so will go a long way to building a lasting relationship and developing an effective communication style. To encourage your son to open up, look for opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations. Sometimes, just be with your son when you can and listen to what’s on their mind or what they have to say. Fishing together, going to a sporting event, or taking a road trip can all be effective ways to create a listening environment.

Niagara Falls consists of three magnificent waterfalls spanning the border of Ontario and New York—the 164-foot tall Horseshoe Falls is on the Canadian side while Bridal Veil And American Falls are on the New York side.Thousands of onlookers delight in the spectacle every day, drawn by the force of the current and the hypnotic mist.

One must visit Niagara Falls to witness the epic views that the area has to offer. It is a unique, breathtakingly beautiful year round destination for travelers from across the globe. There are many ways to enjoy the falls, including going on hiking trails and boardwalks at the base, or visiting viewpoints at the top of the falls. The popular way to get up close to the falls is to hop on the Maid of the Mist boat tour from the bottom of Niagara Gorge. Not just during the day, this area attracts thousands of visitors even during the night time to witness the nightly Falls Illumination. It is a sight to behold and offers the visitors an experience of a lifetime. Every night of the year, the three waterfalls that make up the Niagara Falls are transformed into a colorful masterpiece of water and lights.

Must see attractions when you visit the Niagara Falls: Horseshoe falls: The centerpiece of any visit here are the Horseshoe Falls. Named after their 670m curved shape, they have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America; at 65km/h, more than 2574 kiloliters of water per second crashes over the ridge into a roiling Maid of the Mist Pool. Powerful and playful, the deep turquoise waters mesmerize. The prime falls-watching spot is Table Rock, poised just meters from the drop – in the summer, arrive early to beat the crowds. For a free birds-eye view (albeit a low-flying bird), go to the second floor of the Table Rock Visitor Centre, where floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the Horseshoe Falls - a great place for a selfie.

Skylon tower: The Skylon Tower is a 158m concrete spire with yellow pill-shaped elevators crawling up and down the tower’s neck to the top. The interior itself is dated, even a little sad, but the views! They’re eye-popping and simply picture perfect, with the falls to the east and, on clear days, Toronto to the north. The two observation areas – a glass-enclosed indoor deck and a wire-fenced outdoor one – give you 360-degrees views of the region. Plus, there’s a revolving restaurant and a family-friendly buffet.

Table Rock: The prime falls-watching spot is Table Rock, poised just meters from the drop of Horseshoe Falls, the main attraction of Niagara Falls. Though it can get crowded with photographers and people taking selfies, the crowd moves quickly. To avoid the crowd altogether, arrive early in the morning.

Niagara Falls History Museum: A complete change of pace from the sights near the falls, this museum uses multimedia displays and artifacts to explore the history of Niagara Falls. The focus is on the War of 1812 as well as the transformation of Niagara Falls from an indigenous settlement to one of the most touristic places in Canada. Things like colonial soldier dressup areas and simulated tightrope walks make it fun for kids. It’s inside the beautifully renovated 19th-century Town Hall.

Niagara Glen Nature Reserve: About 8km north of the falls is this exceptional reserve, where you can get a sense of what the area was like pre-Europeans. There are 4km of walking trails winding down into a gorge, past huge boulders, cold caves, wildflowers and woods. Stop by the Nature Centre for trail maps and info. Park naturalists also offer daily one-hour guided nature walks during the summer season.

From adab, adaa and aiyashi to power, love and the spirit of freedom blended with an eyewatering star cast plus Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s trademark opulence and period music has ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ ticking all the right boxes for a binge-worthy watch.

Some may love it, some may find it a tad complicated because of the number of parallel story lines, but the magnum opus series just cannot be ignored. The cast led by Manisha Koirala, yet another industry veteran who has made a spectacular comeback, and Sonakshi Sinha breathe life into the script and resurrect the place (Lahore’s notorious red light area, the melting pot of the British, the nawabs, the courtesans and freedom fighters), the period (the 1940s), and the transitions that make the series a snapshot of a time of ferment.

Divided into eight episodes, each an hour long, the series takes off from the time when Manisha Koirala’s Mallika Jaan becomes the ‘huzoor’, the madame of the courtesans and Heeramandi’s reigning queen. Her antagonist is a feisty Fareedan, played like a tigress by Sonakshi, who’s out to wreak revenge on Malika Jaan for having murdered her mother, Rehana, also played by Sonakshi. And Rehana just happened to be Mallika Jaan’s elder sister.

The spotlight of the series is on the scheming Mallika Jaan, who rules over a house of elite courtesans called Shahi Mahal, where young nawabs come and learn about the ways of the world. But Fareedan threatens to change all that, even as the fight for freedom outside gains momentum.

Love and betrayal are an integral part in the series, giving it its moments of high drama, with Richa Chadha’s character Lajjo leaving an imprint as a delusional tawaif immersed in love with Adhyayan Suman’s Nawab Zulfikar, who leaves her to marry a “memsaab”.

And Aditi Rao Hydari, who essays the part of Bibbojaan, looks every inch stunning both as a courtesan and as a rebel fighting for ‘azaadi’ in her own secretive way, relaying the intelligence that she gathers from her British patrons to those fighting for the nation’s freedom. Her acting prowess contributes to the qualitative heft of the series.

But it is the power struggle played between Mallika Jaan and Fareedan, and their chess moves to outwit each other, that keeps the viewer glued to the screen.

It adds that tension to the script, which does show some loose ends in the later episodes. Every moment Mallika Jaan and Fareedan are on screen, they just own it.

Then there is Sanjeeda Sheikh’s character Waheeda, who has a Midas touch but with a twist -- everything she touches doesn’t turn into gold but dust. Right from the beginning, when she fight to become the ‘huzoor’, to wanting her own mahal named ‘Khwabgah’, to seeking revenge on Mallika Jaan or wanting to make an English highranking officer her ‘sahab’ -- nothing ever works out for Waheeda.

The intertwining stories of the conflicting ambitions of Sharmin Segal (Alam Zeb), a courtesan dreaming of becoming a poet, and Taha Shah Badussha (Tajdar Baloch), a nawab

looking resplendent in their period outfits as they sink their claws into each other, making it clear that they are here to stay and take their crowns back.

There’s talk of a second season in the works and the scene moving to the transition of the courtesans into the world of Hindi cinema. The season that has just unfolded does certainly amp up the anticipation for it.

Man Matters:

Taking care of both physical and mental health is crucial, especially for men who often face unique challenges. Balancing work, family, and personal life can be demanding, making it essential to prioritize self-care. You can start small with the habits that make for a longer, healthier life. As the world celebrates Men’s Mental Health Month in June, here are six tips for men to make sure they are not just physically fit, but their mental health is also well taken care of.

1. Forget dieting, eat healthy instead

There is no perfect diet or one particular eating style that fits everyone. Instead of following diet trends, one should strive to eat more healthy foods in a way that works for you. A well-balanced diet is vital for optimal physical and mental health. Include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your meals. Minimize the consumption of processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of alcohol. A nutritious diet supports your immune system, enhances energy levels, and contributes to a healthier body weight.

2. Quit smoking and chewing tobacco

Men are at higher risk of developing oral and throat cancer, as well as gum diseases, independent of substance use. This makes quitting tobacco use a very important step in improving your health, and many of the benefits begin almost immediately. For example, your body’s oxygen level increases and blood pressure decreases within 24 hours of quitting smoking, and you may notice an improved sense of smell and taste within 48 hours. Other long-term benefits include reduced coughing and shortness of breath, reduced risk of heart disease and

certain cancers, and improved health and life expectancy. So, you must quit smoking and take a step towards a healthier self.

3. Keep your weight and waist in check

Maintaining a body mass index (BMI) that is within a healthy range of 18.5 to 24.9 can be an important step in living your healthiest life. BMI is a common screening tool calculated using your height and weight, and it places results into four categories: underweight, healthy weight, overweight and obese. BMI alone may not be enough to determine a healthy weight for you, so if maintaining BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is not realistic for your body type, composition or frame, another measurement to consider is your waist circumference. Men should typically try to maintain a waist circumference of less than 40 inches. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a waist circumference greater than 40 inches is associated with higher risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

4. Stay positive and keep your mental wellbeing a priority Stress can have a profound impact on both mental and physical health. Learning effective stress management techniques is essential. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or mindfulness to reduce stress levels. Additionally, consider engaging in hobbies or activities that you find enjoyable and relaxing. Taking care of your mental health is the key to maintaining your overall health and well-being. What it means to take care of your mental health is different for everyone, so here are some simple ideas for staying positive and taking time for yourself:

4Every day, do something for yourself and others

4Don’t save all your fun for

the art of balancing your Mental and physical wellbeing

vacation: Find little ways to relax every day

4Spend some quality time with your favorite person doing the things you love the most

4Watch a game of your favorite sport

4Have a glass of your favorite drink or eat your favorite food.

5. See your doctor regularly and prioritize yourself

Routine, preventive care is essential, so it is important to receive annual check-ups, age-recommended tests and screenings. The same goes for dental and eye exams. Being proactive with your care includes knowing your family history and sharing it with your doctor. Taking action now can reduce your risk of health complications later. It’s also important to listen to your body. If something does not feel right, don’t wait for your annual checkup—discuss it with your doctor right away.

6. Prioritize physical activity and revolutionize your life

You should try to exercise moderately for at least 30 minutes every day, changing up your exercise routine every once in a while to challenge your muscles and heart. Fortunately, getting exercise doesn’t require a gym membership or expensive equipment; in fact, one of the healthiest forms of exercise requires neither. Just 150 minutes per week of moderateintensity walking (a little over 20 minutes a day) can help you:

4Maintain a healthy weight

4Prevent or manage heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and more

4Boost your mood

4Reduce stress

4Improve heart health

In addition to walking, you should also consider seasonal sports and indoor and outdoor aerobic activities. You can also include resistance training and flexibility training on alternate days.

Vaping: A menace gripping today’s world

Vaping is a problem that should concern not only us but also our teachers and parents. Tackling the vaping trend among teens is complex. It calls for a strategy that hits the problem from all angles, which means education about the risks, strict rules against vaping, and educating parents on how to prevent their kids from vaping, as well as how to spot the signs of a child addicted to vaping.

Education is Key

Schools are at the forefront of this fight. They need to incorporate lessons into our curriculum that lay out the real risks of vaping, such as respiratory issues, nicotine addiction, lung damage, and effects on productivity in children. But it’s not just about lectures; these sessions should be engaging through discussions, real-life stories, or activities that make us think about the choices we’re making.

The Science of Addiction

A lot of vaping involves inhaling nicotine, which is known to be addictive. Nicotine hits the brain and gives a quick feeling of pleasure or calm, but that’s short-lived. The more you vape, the more your body craves nicotine, leading to addiction. And for us teenagers, it’s even more dangerous because our brains are still developing, especially the parts that help us make decisions and control impulses. Therefore,

Mental Health Matters

It’s essential to understand the link between vaping and mental health. Initially, vaping nicotine might seem like a stress reliever, but with time, it can make anxiety and depression worse. If you decide to quit vaping, which is a great choice, be aware that it might bring challenges like mood swings and increased stress. This complicated connection between vaping and mental well-being underlines the need for strong support systems and awareness campaigns. Recognizing the potential impact on mental health is crucial, and having open discussions is key to supporting those

facing these challenges.

Parents’ Role

In addressing the rising concern of vaping amongst the youth, parents play a pivotal role by educating themselves about the associated risks and fostering open communication with their children. Staying informed about the dangers of vaping, recognizing signs of its use, and initiating non-judgmental conversations are key steps. Parents can further enhance their understanding through workshops provided by schools or community centers, gaining practical insights into navigating discussions about vaping with their children. By actively participating in the fight against teenage vaping, parents contribute to creating a supportive environment that empowers the younger generation to make informed choices and build a healthier, vape-free future.

Community Efforts

The collaboration between schools, health organizations, and community leaders presents a powerful force in combating the dangers of vaping among adolescents. By joining hands, they can amplify their impact through campaigns and events designed to raise awareness about the perils of vaping. These initiatives go beyond mere information dissemination; they aim to provide practical alternatives and healthier coping mechanisms. Essential to this effort is guiding young individuals towards stress management techniques and social activities that foster well-being, offering viable alternatives to the allure of vaping. Through communitydriven endeavours, we can collectively work towards creating an environment that supports healthier choices and deters the prevalence of vaping among the youth.

Positive Role Models

It’s crucial to have role models who show us the benefits of living healthily. Teachers, parents, and local leaders can set an example. Plus, support systems like counselling or groups for students trying to quit vaping can make a huge difference. Therefore, if you notice that vaping is a trend spreading amongst your school, starting an anti-vaping club or initiative aimed towards minimizing vaping can make a huge difference in saving your

Vaping has emerged as a pressing concern among teenagers in today’s society, presenting substantial health hazards. As a Grade 11 student, I’ve witnessed numerous peers falling into the vaping trend, ensnared in its harmful cycle.

peers from the addictive drug of nicotine. Be the role model in your school or community and set an example of how vaping is harmful and not a “cool” thing to do. Together, in solidarity, we can make a difference in minimizing vaping.

Open Conversations

Encouraging open, non-judgmental conversations in both school and home settings facilitates easier discussions about the pressures and challenges adolescents encounter. By openly discussing the reasons behind vaping, we can dispel stigma and create an environment where seeking help becomes more accessible and accepted. This approach fosters a supportive atmosphere for addressing the complex issues surrounding vaping.

In conclusion, dealing with vaping among us teenagers means getting everyone involved – schools, parents, and the whole community. By tackling it from different angles, like education, support, and creating a culture of healthy living, we can fight back against vaping and make better

do you know

why laughter is considered the best medicine ?

Laughter decreases stress, improves your mood, and makes you more resilient. Laughter is also good for your relationships. It serves as a powerful tool and safety valve for dealing with conflict and reducing tension when emotions are running high.

As human beings we are blessed to have the capacity to laugh, which is not available to other living beings. Laughter is infectious, it triggers another to laugh with you, and forms a chain reaction.

Laughter increases good neurotransmitters in our brain to give us joy, pleasure, contentment and a sense of profound happiness. Here are some of the scientific benefits of laughter and humor. Laughter can:

4Relieve pain: Laughter causes the body to produce its own natural painkillers.

4Improve your mood and decrease depression, anxiety: Laughing with others releases endorphins, natural substances that make you feel better and happier. Laughter can lessen depression and anxiety.

4Bring people closer together: Laughter binds people together. It’s contagious. Couples who laugh together report having better relationships.

4Add a new perspective: Studies show that our response to stressful events can be altered by whether we view something as a threat or a challenge. Humor can give us a new

perspective and help us view the situation as a challenge and thus less threatening. It can help one reframe a problem.

4Reduce tension and cortisol: A hearty laugh stimulates circulation and muscle relaxation. This helps reduce the physical symptoms of stress. According to professor Sophie Scott, a neuroscientist at University College London, who studies laughter says, “laughter can decrease the body’s production of cortisol, a hormone released by the adrenal glands into the bloodstream at times of stress. High levels of cortisol have been linked to weight gain and memory loss.”

4Improve your immune system: Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. By contrast, positive thoughts can actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more--serious illnesses.

4Increase resilience: A sense of humor can help one bounce back from adversity. Laughing at our mistakes helps us to recognize making errors is part of life.

4Find items that make you smile or chuckle: Read the daily comic strips or read online some jokes or other funny stories. Place or hang items, such as comic strips, photos or greeting cards in your home or office. Make a list of comedies, funny books or online videos to have on hand when you need a boost of humor. Listen to your favorite comedian. Frame photos of you and your family or friends having fun.

4Share laughter with friends: Spend time with people who make you laugh and are fun. Browse through joke books or online jokes and find jokes to share with friends.

4Focus on finding laughable moments in your day: Look for humor in difficult situations. Find a way to laugh about your situation and notice the decrease of tension in your body.

4Consider laughter yoga classes: In “laughter yoga” people practice laughter as a group. It feels awkward at first, but soon the laughter becomes spontaneous and contagious.

Caution - Know what is not funny: Some forms of humor are inappropriate. Never laugh at the expense of others-- laugh with people--

Laugh at least once a day. You cannot overdose. I invite you to try. Smile- it’s the beginning of laughter. Think of something funny. Give a laugh feels unnatural. you feel.

Taking you on a extravagant culinary journey across India ChefSpecial

Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor has been the host of Khana Khazana, the TV show that ran for almost 20 years. He is also a reputed author of bestselling cookbooks, an entrepreneur and a winner of several culinary honors, including the ‘Best Chef of India’ that was conferred on him by the Government of India.

The website, www.sanjeevkapoor. com is Sanjeev Kapoor’s portal which is a complete cookery manual with a compendium of more than 15,000 tried and tested recipes and a wealth of foodrelated information. Not only is it popular amongst Indians but amongst NRIs as well. It has over 200000 registered users, with page views of 1 million per month in the age group of 20-60 years. It has been awarded the title of the ‘Most Popular Website’ in the Website of the Year 2013 awards and ‘Best Website of the Year’ in 2014 and 2016.

He is also the first chef in the world to launch a dedicated food channel, Food Food. He holds the Guinness Book of World Record for cooking 918 kgs of khichdi live at the World Food India event in 2017, New Delhi. As a chef-preneur, he launched ‘Wonderchef’, a range of world-class kitchen gadgets. Through the venture, the aim is to empower women for them to become independent.

Among the many honors, chef has also shared screen space with Chef Rachel Ray, Mr. Richard Quest and Chef Rene Redzepi on international networks like BBC, CNN and Food Network.

We have some incredible lip smacking, signature dishes by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor that are a must try whenever you visit his famous restaurant, The Yellow Chilli, which offers a diverse range of dishes expertly crafted by the chef himself during his travels across India.

Lalla Mussa Dal

The Lalla Mussa Dal is a signature dish. This rich dal that they take pride in, gets its name from the ‘Lala Musa - Railway station’ in the North West Frontier Province, where it was initially prepared. The dal continues to be made in the traditional way even to this day, with it undergoing an elaborate process of cleaning with turmeric, vinegar and salt before cooking it on a wood-fired tandoor for 36 hours. This dal used to be slowcooked overnight and further enhanced with cream and butter making it creamier

The Yellow Chilli Restaurant (TYC) is the most famous restaurant chain brand from SK Restaurants owned by Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor. Its conception has an interesting story behind it. Chef would often be asked, “You have a TV show, why don’t you have your own restaurant yet, where we can go and eat the food cooked based on his recipes”

The desire materialised in 2001 when the first TYC commenced operations in Ludhiana, Punjab. For 10 years straight, the restaurant retained its No.1 spot in the city and was soon followed by outlets across many cities in India.

Now that the restaurants were up and running, he would still be asked, “Why have you named it The Yellow Chilli’? We know about red ones and green ones, but yellow?”

The inspiration for TYC comes from the tryst with ‘Yellow Chilli’ that is as memorable and unique as the spice itself. The discovery of the yellow chilli as an ingredient in the chaat preparations of Meerut, that adds an extra zing and brings together a confluence of flavors,

and richer. ‘Kali dal’ in their style is one of the fastest moving items on their menu and on record days, to dish out a couple of hundred liters is normal! At The Yellow Chilli, they now recreate the same magic in a much richer way. It has been recreated with the addition of green gram, which is lighter, while retaining the base of the whole black gram that is heavy and hearty. The dal is finished by tempering chopped garlic in ghee until browned.

With this preparation, The Yellow Chilli wishes to revive some of the lost recipes from a bygone era and live up to their promise of serving rare and exquisite Indian dishes.

aromas and colors is well-known. Master Chef Kapoor wanted to use the name in a creative way and that is how ‘The Yellow Chilli’ came into being.

The Yellow Chilli is an all-day casual dining restaurant that offers a premium dining experience with signature dishes curated by the Master Chef himself. TYC serves their guests a wide range of exclusive recipes with a touch of simplicity. The dishes cooked are as per what is deemed right and even reinventing them to suit the tastes of the local patrons. In fact, the menu in each unit has a page dedicated to local delights.

The Yellow Chilli as a brand is synonymous with fine dining, serving some of the most eclectic dishes from the vast Indian food treasure. The Yellow Chilli offers the experience of five star food at three star rates.

Since its launch 21 years ago, TYC has set its footsteps overseas too. This includes outlets in the United States of America and Canada, Middle East, South Africa and we are seeking out to explore other geographies too.

Puran Singh Da Tari Wala Murg

One of their fastest-running dishes at the TYC, the Puran Singh Tari Wala Murg is a delectable chicken gravy preparation inspired by the famous Puran Singh Da Dhaba. This dhaba is located on the Ambala Cantonment along the DelhiChandigarh Highway and has been serving the best Punjabi chicken curry which is famously known as Puran Singh Chicken Curry since 1958. It is a favorite road-side joint always crowded by patrons and first-time visitors.

They have tried to weave the magic of this simple dhaba-style chicken curry cooked with onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic and spices from the famous road side in their

preparation! They take pride in the fact that their version of the chicken curry tastes better as told by their guests.

Shaam Sawera

The recipe that shot Master Chef Kapoor to fame, Shaam Savera is one of his most famous signature dishes. Also, it was an impromptu dish that Master Chef Kapoor prepared on the set of Khana Khazana after his comeback on the show. Shaam Savera is a visual treat to the eyes as well as a gastronomic treat. The dish has spinach kofta stuffed with creamy cottage cheese served in flavorful and creamy tomato gravy. When cut open in half, the koftas show off the light inside. The dish is more than just food, it is poetry on a plate.

Interestingly, the color palette of the dish conveys the contrasting times of the day, with ‘Shaam’ referring to evening (darkness) and ‘Savera’ referring to morning (white day light) in hindi. The other interpretation is that it evokes the spirit of nationalism. Ever since then, the recipe has been adapted in various forms.

Shabnam Ke Moti

As unique as its name that spells tender romance, Shabnam ke Moti is an appetizer made with button mushrooms stuffed with a spicy paneer mixture and made extra special by coating each with a rich cheese layer and then grilling it to a golden perfection. Tender mushroom caps stuffed with flavorful cheese and cooked and charred in an earthen claypot.

Chana Jor Garam Tikki

Chana Jor Garam is a common street snack in most Indian states. It is usually made from chickpeas that are roasted and spiced. The chickpea are soaked, dried, fried and then later flattened into flakes. Inspired by this street-side snack, the tikkis or potato patties are loaded with cheese and coated with crushed chana jor garam to add a zesty flavor and a wonderful crunch.

Gulab-e-Gulkand

They have reinvented the traditional Gulab Jamuns into a unique dessert to make it elegant and rosier. The Gulab-e-Gulkand is an exquisite dessert that has the jamuns stuffed with gulkand, a delectable Indian rose petal compote. The goodness of gulkand ensconced in traditional gulab jamuns springs a sweeter surprise.

Bvlgari

sets a new bar in high-end mechanical watchmaking

“Bvlga R i Stan DS to innovate, to kee P P u S hing the B oun Da R ie S , an D to M a Ste R the a R t o F the extraordinary – and to alwayS S u RPR i S e.”

Never before has a mechanical watch resistant to shocks and magnetic fields been made so slim – even thinner than a coin. Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC sets a new bar in highend mechanical watchmaking by achieving that daring streak and relentless drive to keep pushing boundaries, the benchmark now stands at 1.70 millimeters.

A new feat with pushed boundaries

Consider the significance of a 1.70 mm thickness – a ninth-world record that introduces a novel standard in watchmaking. This new Octo Finissimo Ultra is the thinnest mechanical watch ever produced and the world’s thinnest COSC chronometer.

Antoine Pin, Director of Bvlgari’s watchmaking division, reflects, “The Octo Finissimo is a vast playground of innovation and design – and a source of unprecedented challenges – for Bvlgari’s R&D department. This marks the ninth occasion our engineers, watchmakers, and designers have defied the laws of physics to offer complex timepieces of unparalleled slimness. These accomplishments go deeper than the watchmaking prowess they represent: they define our DNA. Bvlgari stands to innovate, to keep pushing the boundaries, and to master the art of the extraordinary – and to always surprise.”

This milestone reflects a rigorous process, underscored by a commitment to reevaluate, and transcend the conventions of traditional high watchmaking, propelling venerable craftsmanship into a contemporary context. The outcome is notable; the unparalleled design of the watch becomes evident at first glance, prompting reflection on the innovation behind its creation. How is this even possible?

The journey to this record was formidable, beginning with the task of reconciling extreme slimness with robustness. Creating the world’s thinnest mechanical watch isn’t possible by building solely on existing concepts. It requires a paradigm shift, starting a new one from the ground up.

the best dressed stars from the 2024 met gala

Every year, the Met Gala red carpet produces some of the most memorable celebrity fashion moments of all time. This year’s affair in New York City— themed “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”—was certainly no different, with a bevy of A-listers hitting the red carpet in custom creations. The night’s very best dressed attendees were those who paid homage to this year’s theme —doing so in both thoughtful and unexpected ways. Some of the people who caught the eyes were:

Nicki Minaj, who wore a flower-powered Marni minidress popped with petal power . She completed the look with her own line of presson nails and a matching chain strap Trunkaroo clutch by Marni.. The artful dress was made from yellow silk duchesse adorned with hand-painted recycled aluminum flowers.

In a look styled by Law Roach, Zendaya wore a striking ocean-blue gown by Maison Margiela’s John Galliano that included a matching dramatic headpiece. In her mounds of tulle and fabric, she was reminiscent of the ocean—and the look felt just as refreshing as a summer-day dip.

Jennifer Lopez embraced the 2024 Met Gala theme in a custom Schiaparelli couture dress. Lopez’s strapless gown was designed by Daniel Roseberry and featured more than 2,500,000 silver foil bugles and beads. The ensemble took 800 hours of hand embroidery work to create. The dress also featured a draped slit at the front in illusion tulle, entirely embroidered with warm silver pearls and rhinestones.

Gigi Hadid brought a little retro style to the 2024 Met Gala red carpet. The model wore a white offthe-shoulder Thom Browne dress with a tiered skirt decorated with yellow flowers to honor the night’s dress code. She accessorized her look with exquisite Chopard jewelry.
