For two decades, the Surrey Vaisakhi parade has graced the community streets with a lot of fervor and good spirit. It is one of the biggest Vaisakhi parades in Canada organized by Shri Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar. The parade features floats, music, and community groups indulging in heartfelt celebrations. The parade begins and ends at Shri Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, and a procession of thousands of participants travel through various streets before returning to the Gurudwara Sahib. Nagar Kirtans are led by panj pyare or the five chosen Khalsa during Vaisakhi. People join these processions as they roam around the town singing hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib.

With over 500,000 attendees expected this year, the parade is anticipated to draw one of the largest crowds ever. Local businesses and families will sponsor hundreds of booths along the parade route, offering free food and treats to onlookers.

Vaisakhi celebraTions in VancouVer

The Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade is also one of the largest Sikh parades attracting over 400000 people. It is organized by the Khalsa Diwan Society Gurudwara and commences at Ross Street in Vancouver. Participants travel through various streets before returning to the Gurudwara Sahib. Attendees of all races and cultures are welcome at this celebratory and rich cultural event, which features a large number of floats, community performers and folk music.

Vancouver’s Vaisakhi parade also features a unique element which pays tribute to the harvest celebration roots of the parade – attendees are given free food and drinks from hundreds of local residents and businesses.

Every April, the Sikh community all over the world gathers to celebrate Vaisakhi. For decades, Vaisakhi has marked the beginning of the spring harvest, and Punjabi farmers have observed the occasion with community gatherings and celebrations.

Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, was originally a spring harvest celebration observed in the northern Indian state of Punjab but the festival gained religious significance for Sikhs in 1699. During that time the 10th Sikh guruprophet, the last living guru for Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, chose the occasion to commence a formal order dedicated to defending the Sikh community, known as the Khalsa Panth.

Sikhs all over the world celebrate the festival of Baisakhi, a holiday with a special religious significance, observed each year in April.

The sTory of birTh of

Khalsa Panth

on The day of Vaisakhi

This annual tradition of celebrating Vaisakhi is a religious celebration for Sikhs around the world, commemorating the birth or establishment of Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. The word Khalsa originates from the word Khalis, meaning pure and pious. It is strongly believed that Khalsa is pure in thoughts, action and commitment.

We need to roll back our vision about three centuries in the past when it was ordained into the Sikh faith. It is believed that the first 9 Guru ji’s made us Saint first then the miraculous act of being a soldier was done during the time of the 10th Guru ji, converting the members into saint, soldier and scholars.

Several months before Vaisakhi of 1699 the 10th Master Guru Gobind Rai invited his followers from all over Greater India to come to Anandpur Sahib on harvest festival Vaisakhi, i.e. April 13th, 1699. As a result, on that particular day hundreds of devotees and onlookers had gathered. Many had come as a sign of respect for the Guru ji and in accordance with his invitation while some had just come out of curiosity. On the appointed day, the Guru addressed the congregants with a most stirring oration on his divine mission of restoring their faith and preserving Dharma (righteousness).

After his inspirational discourse, he flashed his Smasher and said that every great deed is preceded by equally great sacrifice. He asked, with a naked sword in his hand, “Is there any one among you who is prepared to die for their faith?” When people heard his call, they were taken aback. Some of the wavering followers left the congregation, while others began to look at one another in amazement. It was a crowd of over 80,000.

The Khalsa Panth refers to both a community that practises Sikhism and a specific group of initiated Sikhs. Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Guru of Sikhism, established the Khalsa tradition in 1699.

After a few minutes, a brave Sikh from Lahore named Daya Ram stood up and offered his head to the Master. The Guru took him to a tent pitched close by, and after some time, came out with a blood dripping sword.

The Guru repeated his demand calling for another Sikh who was prepared to die at his command. At this second call, even more people were shocked and some were frightened. A few more of the wavering followers discreetly began to filter out of the congregation.

However, to the shock of many, another person stood up. The second Sikh who offered himself was Dharam Das. This amazing episode did not end there. Soon three more, Mohkam Chand, Sahib Chand and Himmat Rai, offered their heads to the Guru. Each Sikh was taken into the tent and some thought that they could now hear a ‘thud’ sound - as if the sword was falling on the neck of the Sikh.

The Guru ji then brought these 5 Brave men in New Bana with Dastar, wearing the 5 Kakkars - Kesh (uncut hair ), Kanga (wooden comb), Kara (iron bracelet ), Kachera (military shorts) and a Kirpan (sword).

Guru ji prepared Amrit with water in Sarab Loh (pure iron) vessel, Mata Sahib Kaur put

Patasey (sugar puffs ) into the water, a Khanda (double edged sword) was used to stir it while the hymns of Japji, Jaap, Savayiyae, Choupai Benti and Anand Sahib were recited.

Guru ji then baptized these 5 brave hearts by sprinkling Amrit in their eyes, hair and then giving them to drink this pious religious water five times each while saying, “Waheguru ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru ji Ki Fateh”.

Guru ji called them the Panj Pyare or the beloved ones changing their names to Daya Singh, Dharam Singh, Himmat Singh, Mohkam Singh & Sahib Singh.

These are the stages of a spiritual journey through which one will have to go through. Starting from ‘Daya’ to meeting Waheguru ji (Sahib). Guru Gobind Rai then stood in front of these Panj Pyare and asked for the blessing of Amrit. Changing him to Guru Gobind Singh ji, “Waho Waho Gobind Singh ji, Apey Gur Chela”.

This act created abolition of prejudice, equality, democracy, common worship, common place of worship, common external appearance, and combining bhakti & shakti.

The creation of Khalsa culminates 240 years of training by each Guru ji to create the perfect image of saint, scholar and soldier. Guru Nanak Dev ji says, “Jo Tau Prem Khelan Ka Chao, Sir Dhar Tali Gali Mori Aao”. This translates to: If you want to walk on the path of devotional love, cut your head, put on your palm and walk towards me (submit your ego / Haumey). In order to mold his personality the Guru inculcated in him the five virtues - sacrifice, cleanliness, honesty, charity and courage, and prescribed Rehat/ Maryada - the Sikh code of discipline.

“Rehni Rahe Soi Sikh Mera, Oh Sahib Mein Uss Ka Chera “. This means, a Khalsa in Rehat and Maryada is my beloved, he is my master and I am his follower.

“Khalsa Akal Purakh Ki Fauj, Pragtiyo Khalsa Parmatam Ki Mauj”. This is believed to be Guru Ji’s Meher which means blessing.

Celebrating Sikh heritage

In proportion to its overall population, Canada has one of the largest Sikh populations in the world with over 500,000 Sikhs calling this multicultural land their home.

Since the end of the 19th century, Sikhs began to immigrate from India to Canada and the country’s diversity is shaped by the achievements of members of this community in a variety of fields. Sikh Heritage Month is an opportunity to reflect on the significant role the Sikh community plays in helping build a stronger, more inclusive Canada. Sikh Heritage Month is intended to make Sikh culture more accessible and understood.

The first Sikh Heritage Month in Canada was celebrated in Ontario in 2013, followed by British Columbia in 2017. For the past few years, states and provinces across the United States have observed April as Sikh Awareness Month. The British Parliament followed suit. It has been the result of resolutions and early-day motions in all of these places. It is an Act of Parliament in Canada that allows Sikhs to partake in federal support to enhance Sikh awareness and celebrate the month with greater passion and fervor.

The Canadian Parliament passed the Sikh Heritage Month Act, which designates April as Sikh Heritage Month across Canada for all time, allowing them to raise Sikh awareness and organize Vaisakhi celebrations in a more grand manner.

After nearly eighteen months of legislative tussle, Sukhminder Singh Dhaliwal, moved the Bill c-376, which sought to designate April as Sikh Heritage Month, as a private member’s bill on October 19, 2017, and it was approved by the royal assent on April 30, 2019, making it a law.

The House of Commons voted on the bill on November 7, 2018, and it was approved by a unanimous vote on April 11, 2019, in the Senate. By recognizing the Sikh community and appreciating the need to create bridges across religions and cultures, Canada became the first nation in the world to declare April as Sikh Heritage Month as an act of Parliament.

Sikh Heritage Month celebrates the rich arts, culture, and heritage of Sikhs in Canada. Moreover, it recognizes the many contributions made by the Sikh community to Canada’s social, economic, political, and cultural life.

The first Sikh Heritage Month in Canada was celebrated in Ontario in 2013, followed by British Columbia in 2017.

For the Sikh community, April is an important month. Sikhs in Canada and other countries celebrate Vaisakhi this month to commemorate the founding of the Khalsa and the Sikh articles of faith. Vaisakhi, also known as Khalsa Day, is widely observed by Sikhs in Canada.

It is by sheer labor and diligence, the Sikhs have virtually made Canada their second motherland. Sikh Heritage Month serves as an opportunity to spread the illustrious tales of the Sikh people’s tenacity and resilience,

heritage, history and culture. It is an opportunity to educate future generations and society at large about Sikh Canadians.

Happy Sikh Heritage Month to all our esteemed readers!

don't wait until it's too late: Get critical illness insurance today

You’re told you have a serious illness. It feels like your whole world turns upside down. Suddenly, doctor visits, treatments, and the stress take over. But there’s another worry creeping in – money. Critical illness insurance can help ease this burden. In Canada, it’s like a safety net for your finances during tough times, giving you the freedom to focus on getting better.

Why is critical illness insurance important?

Even though Canada’s healthcare system is good, it doesn’t cover everything. When you’re hit with a critical illness, you might face unexpected costs like pricey medications or changes to your home for your condition. Critical illness insurance steps in by giving you a tax-free lump sum of money when you’re diagnosed with a covered illness. This cash is yours to use however you need, taking away the stress of money so you can concentrate on healing.

Why should you consider critical illness insurance?

Peace of mind: Knowing you have financial support can be a huge relief

during a tough time. Covers Extra Costs: It helps pay for things not covered by regular healthcare, like travel for special treatments or extra care at home.

Protects your income: If you have to stop working, the money can replace your lost income and help you keep up with bills.

Keeps debt in check: Medical bills can pile up fast. This money can help you manage them without getting buried in debt.

Supports your family: It’s not just about you – this insurance can help your family too, with things like childcare or household expenses. This

aujla karan creaTes hisTory at the 2024 Juno Awards

In an unprecedented moment in Canadian music, a Punjabi artist made history with a victory at the 2024 Juno Awards.

Punjabi-Canadian artist Karan Aujla took home his first Juno Award in the TikTok Fan Choice category on March 24, 2024. Although he was also nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Aujla won the Fan Choice award, with nominees including everyone from The Weeknd to Tate McRae to fellow Punjabi artist Shubh.

Aujla got on stage to thank his collaborators like Ikky as well as Deep Rehaan. He said in his acceptance speech, “Oh my god. This is definitely the first one, but not the last. I just wanna start off by saying thank you Junos, thank you to my team, everybody sitting down there. […] I just wanna thank my parents, thank god. Waheguru da shukar hai. I wanna thank my wife, my brothers […] Sometimes I can’t believe I’m that same kid that lost his parents when I was in India, and made my way out to Canada, this beautiful country.”

“If you are dreaming, just make sure you dream big,” Aujla said as he signed off.

The Juno Fan Choice Award has previously been dominated by the likes of Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and more and this marks the first time a Punjabi hip-hop artist has won a Juno.

In the past, several Indian-origin artists have been nominated at the Junos — Patna-born, New Delhi-bred Toronto singersongwriter Kiran Ahluwalia most notably won World Music Album of the Year twice at the Juno Awards, in 2004 and 2012.

Breakthrough Punjabi nominees have included rapper NAV, who was nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2018, plus Fan Choice and Rap Recording of the Year nominations in 2019 and 2020. Last year, AP Dhillon made history by becoming the first Punjabi artist to perform at the awards.

This year, Aujla took over with his go-to collaborator Ikky at the Juno Awards 2024, performing a medley of songs like “Admirin’ You” and “Softly.” It made for a vibrant display of Desi music at one of Canadian music’s long-running, acclaimed events.

For Aujla, the win comes on the back of releasing several hits, plus being in India to mark the launch of his collaborative album with Mumbai rap star DIVINE, Street Dreams. Earlier this month, Aujla featured on Badshah‘s collab-heavy new album Ek Thha Raja, lending his voice to the buoyant opening track “God Damn.”

While the gala was a splendid time to celebrate with friends and colleagues, the real reason for the show comes down to one thing — the cars! With more than 200 vehicles on display across 220,000+ square feet of exhibition space, the show truly lived up to its reputation as Western Canada’s premier automotive event.

From sleek Luxury Supercars and rugged off-roaders to cutting-edge Electric Vehicles and beautifully restored classics, there was something to captivate gear-heads from all walks of life. Highlights included the Western Canadian debut of the Corvette E-Ray, the awe-inspiring Maserati MC20, and the rugged INEOS Grenadier — a big hit for outdoor enthusiasts in British Columbia. Special displays showcased the latest advancements in vehicle technology, including Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) and advanced safety systems, while the EV and PHEV Test Drive Experience dropped attendees into the driver’s seat to truly feel the power and performance firsthand.

to shout out the bright pink official Barbie Maserati which was a big hit, and the Western Canadian debut of the undeniably unique and one-of-a-kind Tesla Cybertruck, which drew non-stop crowds for the entire run of the show.

For this year’s event, the VIAS was proud to shine a spotlight on the significant contributions of women in the automotive industry. BC’s own Nicole Havrda, a 17-year-old race car prodigy, captivated audiences with her remarkable journey from karting to the highly competitive Formula Pro USA series and Formula Regional Americas.

Blair Qualey, President of the New Car Dealer’s Association of Canada — although surely exhausted from all the action — was elated with this year’s event, and is already looking at ways to make the 2025 edition even bolder.

From the glitz of the Gala to the thrill of the showroom floor, the 2024 Vancouver International Auto Show was a testament to the enduring allure of the automotive world. As the guests go home and the exhibitors drive off into the sunset, they leave with memories of an unforgettable experience and anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead on the open road.

With its triumphant return, the VIAS reignited the spirit of camaraderie and excitement among car enthusiasts across Western Canada, and we can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store.

Spring eye allergies? Expert tips from your local eye doctor

As the spring season begins to bloom, so do the challenges for those prone to eye allergies.

The transition from winter to spring brings about a surge in pollen and other airborne allergens, triggering uncomfortable symptoms such as itching, redness, and watering of the eyes. This phenomenon, commonly known as seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, affects millions worldwide.

In British Columbia, the springtime allergies primarily include pollen from trees like alder, birch, and maple, as well as grasses and various flowering plants. This airborne pollen can swiftly irritate the eyes, leading to itching, redness, and watering, making outdoor activities less enjoyable for many.

Fortunately, there are several strategies to help manage springtime eye allergies: Cold compresses: Apply cold compresses to your closed eyelids to reduce itching, redness, and inflammation. A clean, damp cloth or a cold eye mask can provide soothing relief. Cold compresses also help constrict blood vessels, reducing swelling and discomfort.

Proper lid hygiene: Practice good eyelid hygiene to remove allergens and debris that may contribute to irritation. Use a gentle cleanser recommended by your optometrist to clean your eyelids daily. This helps prevent allergens from accumulating and reduces the risk of eye infections.

Artificial tears (AT) for washing: Use preservative-free artificial tears to rinse your eyes and flush out allergens. This can help alleviate symptoms by removing irritants and soothing the eyes. Make sure to choose artificial tears specifically labeled as preservative-free to avoid further irritation.

Prescription eye drops: Consult with your healthcare provider or optometrist about prescription eye drops to help calm itching and reduce inflammation. These eye drops often contain antihistamines or mast cell stabilizers to target allergic reactions

directly in the eyes. They can provide more targeted relief than oral medications and are typically more effective at controlling allergy symptoms.

Avoid rubbing your eyes: Resist the urge to rub your eyes, as this can worsen symptoms and increase irritation. Rubbing can also introduce additional allergens and bacteria, leading to further discomfort and potential eye infections.

By following these tips, you can minimize the impact of springtime eye allergies and enjoy the season to its fullest. Remember to consult your eye doctor for personalized advice and treatment options.

Whether you’re celebrating Vaisakhi or simply enjoying the beauty of spring, taking care of your eyes ensures a clear and comfortable outlook on the season ahead.

Happy Vaisakhi!

knoW abouT The sprinGTime allerGies

Spring means flower buds and blooming trees — and if you are one of the millions of people who have seasonal allergies, it also means sneezing, congestion, a runny nose and other bothersome symptoms. Seasonal allergies — also called hay fever and allergic rhinitis — can make you miserable. Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance — such as pollen, bee venom or pet dander — or a food that doesn’t cause a reaction in most people.

Pollen Allergy season in Vancouver has started earlier this year because of the warm winter and above average springtime temperatures. Here are some important details to help you navigate the season of springtime allergies.

Symptoms

Allergy symptoms, which depend on the substance involved, can affect your airways, sinuses and nasal passages, skin, and digestive system. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. In some severe cases, allergies can trigger a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.

Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, can cause:

4Sneezing

4Itching of the nose, eyes or roof of the mouth

4Runny, stuffy nose

4Watery, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis)

Risk factors

You might be more likely to develop an allergy if you:

Pollen Allergy season in Vancouver has started earlier this year because of the warm winter and above average springtime temperatures. Here are some important details to help you navigate the season of springtime allergies.

4Have a family history of asthma or allergies, such as hay fever, hives or eczema

4Are a child

4Have asthma or another allergic condition

Diagnosis

To evaluate whether you have an allergy, your doctor will likely:

4Ask detailed questions about signs and symptoms

4Perform a physical exam

4Have you keep a detailed diary of symptoms and possible triggers.

4Skin test: A doctor or nurse will prick your skin and expose you to small amounts of the proteins found in potential allergens. If you are allergic, you will likely develop a raised bump (hive) at the test location on your skin.

4Blood test. Specific IgE (sIgE) blood testing, commonly called radioallergosorbent test (RAST) or ImmunoCAP testing, measures the amount of allergy-causing antibodies in your bloodstream, known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. A blood sample is sent to a medical laboratory, where it can be tested for evidence of sensitivity to possible allergens.

Here’s how you can reduce your exposure to allergy triggers

To reduce your exposure to the things that trigger your allergy signs and

symptoms (allergens):

4Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air.

4Delegate lawn mowing, weed pulling and other gardening chores that stir up allergens.

4Remove clothes you have worn outside and shower to rinse pollen from your skin and hair.

4Do not hang laundry outside — pollen can stick to sheets and towels.

4Wear a pollen mask if you do outside chores.

Take extra steps when pollen counts are high

Seasonal allergy signs and symptoms can flare up when there’s a lot of pollen in the air. These steps can help you reduce your exposure:

Check your local TV or radio station, your local newspaper, or the Internet for pollen forecasts and current pollen levels.

beauty Tips To Get your skin party ready

The party season is close at hand and even though you’re excited about it, your skin might not feel the same way. We can see why. Wearing makeup daily, consistent late nights and plenty of alcohol and sweet treats through the holidays can leave skin feeling fatigued, looking dull and breaking out. That’s why before it even begins, get your beauty arsenal ready with these skincare tips and products to keep your face looking fresh and feeling healthy through the season.

1. Never Skip Makeup Removal

The importance of makeup removal can never be skipped past. No matter how late it gets, makeup must be removed, especially before sleeping otherwise it will

accumulate on the skin which can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

2. Find The Right Fit

Finding makeup that works for your skin type is incredibly important. Since you’re wearing makeup more often at this time of year, the right makeup will work more cohesively with your skin to last longer and feel more comfortable in it.

3. Hydrate A Little Extra

To make good on the hours you aren’t hydrating your skin, make sure you give it an added dose of nourishment whenever possible. Do this by drinking a lot of water through the day, moisturizing before applying makeup and using a hydrating face mask when possible.

Emotional justice: A journey of healing and support through intimacy

Apowerful tool in the search for healing is intimacy. A profoundly healing process starts when two people welcome meaningful moments of connection and open themselves to one another. Suppressed blocks of emotion eventually come to the surface when our communication channels open up and our vulnerabilities are revealed. As we learn from the past and go forward with greater resilience, this opens up space for basic healing and growth. Intimacy can exist in contexts other than romantic partnerships and doesn’t necessarily appear the same. We can discover a method to re-establish equilibrium in body and soul through the intimacy of attentive talks with friends or loved ones, or even through creative expressions like painting or music.

To establish an unwavering love for oneself, we must first seek out an authentic, close relationship. Because of a lack of self-acceptance, we frequently limit our ability to connect intimately with those around us and even struggle in our relationships. Accepting everything about ourselves, flaws and strengths included, makes room for meaningful friendships to develop.

To start and sustain a good relationship, connect attentively with your spouse. This can ease tension, enhance communication, and increase emotional closeness.

Here are some strategies for connecting mindfully with your partner: Make time for each other every day - Set aside specific times to connect with your partner in meaningful ways. Talk about what’s on your mind and do activities that bring you closer, such as taking a walk or playing a

On April 22, after engaging in eco-friendly activities, celebrate Earth Day with a sustainable wine from Okanagan Crush Pad (OCP) in Summerland, British Columbia. CP, home to Haywire and Garnet Valley Ranch and the brands Free Form and Narrative, exemplifies the growing trend of earthfriendly winemaking in BC. This practice champions environmental protection and resource conservation by minimizing chemical use, enhancing biodiversity, managing water efficiently, reducing energy use, and cutting carbon emissions through renewable energy and carbon offsetting.

OCP’s commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted, reflecting values of environmental stewardship akin to those upheld by individuals with South Asian heritage, emphasizing harmony with nature. Notably, OCP is the first Canadian winery to join the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), undertaking rigorous environmental audits to fulfill ambitious goals like a 33% reduction in emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2050. Their pioneering adoption of Fortis BC’s Renewable Natural

Gas (RNG) program and shift to lightweight packaging illustrate significant strides towards reducing their environmental impact.

Moreover, OCP’s implementation of sustainable agricultural practices, endorsed by Salmon Safe, showcases their holistic approach to sustainability, mirroring principles of minimal environmental impact and ecological balance valued in South Asian cultures.

As we observe Earth Day, OCP stands as a beacon of how traditional respect for the earth can integrate with contemporary winemaking, demonstrating that high-quality wine production can harmoniously coexist with profound environmental responsibility.

commitment to preserving our planet for future generations.

Narrative XC Sparkling 2021

Crafted from Auxerrois and Chardonnay sourced from Naramata, this sparkling wine, named “XC” for its 90 days in charmat tanks, offers a complex fermentation process involving concrete, stainless steel, and large barrels to enhance palate complexity while maintaining freshness. It bursts with pineapple and rich tropical fruits, complemented by enticing floral notes. The rich, creamy palate is highlighted by a delicate mousse and refined length. Eco-consciously packaged in lightweight glass with a pressureresistant stelvin closure, it’s an exemplary choice for the environmentally aware wine enthusiast.

Free Form Riesling 2020

Shaped by the unique terroir of Garnet Valley Ranch, this organic Riesling reflects the essence of Okanagan Valley, BC. Grown on volcanic soil, it reveals Granny Smith apples, tropical citrus, and mandarin pith, leading to a refreshing creamsicle texture balanced with fine Okanagan tension. Fermented naturally in stainless tanks, it pairs wonderfully with cheeses. Its sustainability extends to packaging, with a label printed on pollutionfree stone paper.

To be fair, the Canadian Rockies have other top places such as Jasper, Kootenay, or Yoho National Park and many more provincial parks that were also blessed by turquoise lakes mirroring snow-capped jagged peaks around, but Banff National Park still stands above them all. The Banff area is a huge playground that seems like a paradise to all outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking and biking trails in the summer, cross-country tracks together with ski resorts opened in the winter, the landscape dotted with hundreds of lakes, glaciers, forests, and the never-ending mountainous scenery, no wonder that Banff National Park has been a UNESCO designated area since 1985.

Planning a trip to Banff can be almost overwhelming, especially if you only have limited time at your disposal! To help you save some time, we’ve put together a few suggestions.

What to do:

WANDER AROUND THE TOWN OF BANFF

The town’s main thoroughfare, Banff Avenue, is teeming with boutiques and restaurants. With the impressive Cascade Mountain looming in the background, you will feel like you have stepped into a picture postcard.

Plan your triP

GettinG there:

Banff National Park is located 80 miles west of Calgary. Calgary’s international airport is serviced by major national and international carriers with multiple flights arriving daily. From the airport, rent a car and take Trans-Canada 1 west from Calgary straight into the park, through Banff and Lake Louise. A direct bus service from the airport or downtown Calgary is also available to Banff and Lake Louise, as are shuttle services through tour operators.

When to Go:

Open year-round, Banff offers amazing wildlife viewing and sightseeing, plus plentiful shopping and dining options, any time of the year. Summer is popular for hiking, paddling, mountain biking and cycling, photography, and climbing. The best time for viewing seasonal color is fall, when the larch trees—the only coniferous trees to lose their needles in winter—turn yellow.

Get around:

Visiting the park by car or tour bus is most common. In the town of Banff you can also catch the ROAM bus, a publicly accessible and environmentally friendly hybrid outfitted with wildlife information. Pick up a map or bus schedule at the Banff or Lake Louise visitor information centers. GPS guides are also available.

summer in Banff and lake louise is all about sunshine, mountain adventures, and moments full of vibrant beauty. take a trip to this picturesque destination this summer and be wowed by the spectacular beauty of mountains, lakes, and valleys nestled in the area.

April 2024 www. entertainmentmagazine.ca 56

NAVIGATE THROUGH HIGHWAY 1A (BANFF TO LAKE LOUISE)

Along the way to Lake Louise you have a good chance of seeing wildlife beside the road, such as black bears, elk and grizzly bears. For the best chance of sightings, try to travel early in the morning or at the end of the day, when the animals come closer to the road to feed.

TAKE A HIKE TO JOHNSTON CANYON

One of the most popular day hikes in Banff National Park, is 30 minutes from the Town of Banff. Its easily accessible location close to Highway 1A, as well as the beauty of Johnston Creek and its waterfalls, makes it a choice destination for visitors and hiking enthusiasts. You will be able to appreciate the power of the water as it rushes and plunges through

the canyon. This 2.2-km round-trip hike to the lower falls is considered easy (elevation gain of 30 metres) and takes about 1 hour (round trip).

DO NOT MISS THE CAVE AND BASIN

NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

Cave and Basin is the birthplace of Canada’s National Park system, created in the early 1900s after three railway workers stumbled upon a cave full of “liquid gold” in 1883.

Pay a visit to this fascinating site with more than 13,000 years of history, where you will have the chance to walk through a magnificent underground cave and admire its natural beauty. Experience nature, culture and history and learn about the origins of the region’s hot springs. You can even dip your hands in the steamy mineral waters.

The site offers free discovery tours led by naturalist guides. You can also take a guided lantern tour after dark (Saturday nights from June to September).

GONDOLA TO SULPHUR MOUNTAIN

The Banff Gondola will whisk you up to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, an elevation of 2,281 metres, in just 8 minutes, where you will experience jaw-dropping mountain views. Take in the 360o panoramas from the observation deck or take a stroll along the Ridgetop Boardwalk where the views get better with every step. To avoid the crowds in the high season, it is best to take the Gondola before 11 am or after 5 pm.

Open daily from 9 am to 8:30 pm from mid-April to mid-May, 8 am to 9:30 pm from mid-May to late June and 8 am to 10:30 pm from late June to early September.

HIKING ON SULPHUR MOUNTAIN

Hiking enthusiasts may prefer to take the 5.5-kilometre trail (one way) with an elevation gain of 655 metres (a 4 hour round trip). The trail starts from Upper Hot Springs, 1 Mountain Avenue, Banff.

VISIT THE UPPER HOT SPRINGS

Soak in the steamy hot mineral waters where travelers have come to “take the waters” for more than a century. Upper Hot Springs is a public pool filled with natural hot springs water. Located just outside of Banff on the slopes of Sulphur Mountain, the springs offer spectacular views of the Bow Valley, from an elevation of 1,585 metres. Early in the morning is the best time for a truly relaxing experience!

GETTING AROUND BANFF

For the sake of the environment and to avoid parking problems, take advantage of Banff’s public transit options:

4Roam Public Transit services the Town of Banff and popular Banff Attractions (roamtransit.com). The hybrid Roam buses cover several routes including:

4Roam Route 1, providing service to Upper Hot Springs and Sulphur Mountain (Banff Gondola) from Banff Avenue

4Roam Route 2, providing service between Tunnel (Village I and Village II), downtown Banff and the Banff Springs Hotel

4Roam Route 4, providing service between the Banff Train Station and Cave and Basin Historic Site

Where to eat:

WILD FLOUR BANFF’S ARTISAN BAKERY CAFÉ

This bustling bakery is a favourite gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. Open for breakfast and lunch, it offers excellent value for money. Customers come for the artisan bread, freshly-baked pastries and organic, local, healthy, and nourishing food. For breakfast, try the breakfast frittata sandwich or the housemade granola with a great cup of coffee. At lunch, a tantalizing array of fresh soups, salads and sandwiches will make your mouth water.

THE BEAR STREET TAVERN

The Bear Street Tavern has the best pizza in town. Also serves soups, salads and sandwiches: there’s something for everyone!

THE JUNIPER BISTRO

The Juniper Hotel restaurant has one of the best views in Banff. Ask for a table near a window or on the patio for the best possible vistas. The menu offers handcrafted cuisine prepared with fresh local ingredients and features smoked duck breast, beef, lamb and fish dishes. Vegetarian and gluten-free options at every meal. Ranked one of the Top 100 Best Restaurants in Canada by OpenTable.

EDEN

Located within Rimrock Resort Hotel, Eden is one of only five 5-diamond restaurants in Canada. Enjoy one of Banff’s finest dining experiences featuring delicately crafted French cuisine influenced by fresh local ingredients. Expect to spend 3 hours over dinner. Reservations are required.

Duration: 122 minutes

Hindi cinema has not written very many lead female characters who have careers, although to be fair to scriptwriters, many of the roles for women have been full of substance. And depth.

It is thoroughly interesting therefore to walk into a movie that is about the story of not one but three diligent friends who are working as cabin crew for the fictional Kohinoor Airlines.

Director Rajesh Krishnan helms a 122-minute joy ride in his heist

This breezy creW Will Win your hearTs

comedy film Crew starring Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon playing the leads.

Until their peaceful lives take a dramatic turn, all seems to be fine with the three rather glamorous women -- Geetu (Tabu), Jasmine Kohli (Kapoor Khan) and Divya Rana (Sanon), who are a part of an airline crew aged between the 20s and the 40s -- when they are unexpectedly caught in a difficult situation orchestrated by someone with ulterior motives. Now, they are trapped in a never-ending struggle, desperately trying to break free.

The owner of the airlines is Vijay Walia (Saswat Chatterjee). No prizes for guessing who he is modelled on!) Vijay Mallya, the ex-chairman of Kingfisher -- a brand that offered a line of beverages and an airline group -- fled India for the UK.

Walia in the film leads a luxurious life and cons his way all the way while all along putting up a respectable front that commands tremendous admiration and deference.

The airline’s staff hasn’t been paid for a year and the three women -- as also

other 4,000 members of the company -- increasingly get impatient. A young mother cries her heart out to share that her daughter’s school fees has not been paid and that the school principal may rusticate the child.

Geeta has been the bread winner in her family while her loving husband Arun (Kapil Sharma) lives off her. As their in-flight supervisor, she is older than the rest, is tired of working so hard and is waiting for her provident fund to be cleared so that they move to Goa and start life afresh as a restaurateur.

Senior flight attendant Jasmine bonds well with her maternal grandfather (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) after her parents passed away. A sucker for life and money, she dreams of a life that’s rosy all the way. Divya Rana (Sanon) is the most educated of the lot and is a trained pilot.

When recession hit the world, she had to settle for a job as a flight attendant though she lies to her family that she has a job as a captain with the airlines. They all work very hard and their daily woes turn all the more unbearable when they don’t get their due on time.

Things hit rock bottom when they discover that their debt-ridden airline is on the verge of bankruptcy. And the three desperate women look for desperate measures to survive and fulfil their aspirations. for survival.

And they resort to crime. The best part of the storyline credited to Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri is the element of unapologetic behavior of the three who by the way, could pass off as sexy ramp models. The film has its wild moments throughout, but after taking off with a lot of promise, it slides to a tepid landing. Nevertheless, it’s honest, breezy and a joyride!

‘Godzilla x KonG The new empire’: an unmissable marvel

Director: Adam Wingard

Cast: Rebecca Hall, Brian

Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Rachel House, Kaylee

Hottle

Duration: 115 minutes

Rating: ***

It doesn’t matter if you are team Kong or team Godzilla, because the latest ‘Godzilla x Kong’ film has something for fans of both these Monsterverse Titans. Derived from its predecessors, director Adam Wingard sets up a monster-verse like never before. For anyone who has followed these warring giants in prequels leading up to the big collab, the best is saved for the latest release. From the VFX, fight scenes to the emotional trajectory of Kong and Jia (Kaylee Hottle), everything is amplified over 10 times.

The new installment in the Monsterverse puts the mighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal deadly threat hidden within our world that threatens the existence of their species and our very own, as well as diving deep into the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond. Delving straight into the origins of Hollow Earth, this film will explore the ancient Titan battle that brought man and monster together forever.

The story is simple. There is a fight to save Hollow Earth (a place inside the Earth’s core where life has been preserved and protected from mankind’s destruction), where Kong lives and is threatened by the Skar King, an evil ape gone rogue. But to save Hollow Earth, Kong needs to summon his nemesis, Godzilla, to confront the army of villains in an epic battle.

There is also the mother-daughter duo of Dr Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) and Jia, who are at the centre of helping Kong make sure he’s not alone at his job. What makes the film even more fun is the fact that there is something for every Kong/Godzilla fan. You get to see new creatures battle with the old. The poker-faced Brian Tyree Henry is funny as the avid blogger while Dan Stevens as Trapper is his perfect sidekick.

When eva mendes was smitten by ryan Gosling after their first meeting

Actress Eva Mendes spoke about meeting her partner and actor Ryan Gosling when they made their 2012 movie ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’. “I’ve never experienced anything like that,” she said of working with her now-partner on the Today show. “The way he works, his commitment to his craft, how he wants to make everything as best as it can be — and that means making his costars as best as they can be. Unfortunately — or fortunately — there’s only one Ryan, so I pretty much stopped acting after that,” she added.

Mendes and Gosling started dating after meeting on set. The two, who are private about their relationship, share two daughters together. The couple welcomed their first child, Esmeralda Amada, in September 2014, and then had Amada Lee in April 2016. Mendes also spoke about taking a step back from acting after more than a decade onscreen not being a difficult decision to make.

“It was like a no-brainer. I’m so lucky, and I was like, if I could have this time with my children — and I still work, I just didn’t act, because acting takes you on location,” she said. “It takes you away. It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement that it was like, ‘Okay, he’s going to work and I’m going to work. I’m just going to work here’,” she added.

Why healthy relationships are so important

Consequently, there are many ways in which healthy relationships with our parents, spouses, siblings help us grow and sustain ourselves. These involve making time for each other, remembering details about each other’s lives, and sharing without fear of judgement.

Here are some reasons why it is crucial to have healthy relationships in your life.

1. You heal better

Healthy relationships provide the emotional support one needs to make it out of chronic illness and recovering from surgery or other procedures. Studies show that people with a partner or spouse are much more likely to heal after procedures like heart surgery, as well as live longer with chronic illness. This isn’t only due to the physical care they get, but because of the emotional support they receive in the form of motivation and encouragement.

2. You act healthier overall

People who care about you and express these feelings actively and healthily encourage you to be healthier. This may be by adopting a better lifestyle, eating better and exercising more often, and practicing mindfulness and gratefulness. The best example of this is how our mothers taught us healthier habits for life.

3. You have a sense of purpose

Feeling lonely, dejected, unwanted are all signs of lack of a purpose. Such a mindset can be incredibly damning, but healthy relationships remind one that they are needed and appreciated. This leads to a sense of purpose and reminds you that you belong in a world. Studies suggest that a greater sense of purpose can improve longevity as well.

4. You stress less

With healthy relationships around them, we are less likely to stress over things, as our friends and family remind us of how fickle these are, and we always survive the worst. Moreover, healthy relationships actually reduce the production of cortisol in one’s body. Cortisol is a stress hormone,

Relationships with other individuals are what keep us alive and grounded. Human beings are social creatures, and to crave company is not only normal, it is also important for our physiological and mental well being. The lack of relationships that allow us to communicate, vent, listen, trust and respect, and share mutually threaten our sanity and stability can be depressing.

and its decrease reduces how much stress a person experiences due to external factors.

5. You live longer

Studies have revealed that people with healthy relationships in their life live longer than those who do not. The impact of not having healthy and sustainable relationships has even been compared to smoking thirteen cigarettes a day! This is due to the reduced stress, the improvement in one’s lifestyle, the emotional and spiritual support people receive due to healthy relationships, and more.

A bane of the present generation is the glorification of living and surviving alone; no human being can live by themselves without healthy associations with other people. This attitude is not only unhealthy, it is dangerous. Healthy relationships are important for all of us, and we should strive to build more of them with our families and friends.

The private residence of the Ambani family - Antilia saw a vibrant gala of Holi in Mumbai. The Magnificent Roman High Jeweler, Bulgari also known as the master of colored gemstones, celebrated the Indian festival of Colors, with ‘A Roman Holi’ co-hosted with Isha M. This event holds a special place in my heart as Bulgari’s Heritage Collection draws inspiration from the Navratna, uniting the celebrated cultures and traditions of India and Italy on a global stage. Bulgari’s dedication to diversity and its practice of imbibing cultural heritage to craft its legacy has always resonated with me. I am looking forward to witnessing how we can serve as inspirations to build a heritage that elevates the grandeur of both countries.”

For this special occasion, Bulgari featured nine varieties of necklaces from its Heritage Collection, inspired by the Navratna, a talisman connected to Indian astrology, expressing Maison’s love for colored gemstones. Highlighting rubies, sapphires, emeralds, amethysts, pearls, diamonds, citrines and peridots. Exceptional creations from the 1980s embody Italian craftsmanship and a daring tribute to colors.

Thrilled with the success of the evening, Jean Christophe Babin, CEO of Bulgari shared, “The relationship India has with jewelry goes beyond aesthetic appeal. It is a form of expression that connects the past with the present. The concept of ‘A Roman Holi’ ties in all these nuances through colors and celebration. Highlighting our heritage collection of colored gemstones in the aura of Holi paying tribute to Indian Navratna was an exhilarating moment for us.”

This year, Shosha’s Holi Boat Party was a blast! Massive shoutout to everyone who braved the rain and made it epic! From the moment we set sail to the last splash of color, masti ka silsila thha be-inteha. We laughed, danced and dived into the colors of the festival. For a while it gave real india vibe. Although the party might have ended, but the memories will live on.
