Biography of Raj Devarajan

Raj Devarajan grew up in India with a clear sense of purpose. While many teenagers were still considering their future careers, he had already entered medical school at Madras Medical College at the age of fifteen. This early achievement reflected the focus and determination that would continue to guide his professional life.

Training Across Three of America's Best Universities After completing medical school, Raj moved to the United States to continue his education and training. He completed residencies in adult psychiatry at Yale University, child psychiatry at Harvard University, and internal medicine/gastroenterology at Tufts University.

When his fellowship at Tufts concluded in 1994, he had completed training at three of the country's leading institutions. This experience helped shape his approach to medicine, allowing him to understand patients from both physical and behavioral perspectives.

Thirty Years of Practice, One Procedure at a Time Raj Devarajan, MD, founded Middlesex Gastroenterology, PC in 1994. Over the following 29 years, he developed one of the busiest gastroenterology practices in Massachusetts. By the time he retired from clinical medicine in 2023, he had performed more than sixty thousand endoscopic procedures.

Earlier in his career, Raj established the ERCP program at Emerson Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center. This specialized procedure is used to treat disorders affecting the bile ducts and pancreas. Successfully launching the program required both clinical skill and organizational leadership.

Raj worked closely with hospitals, including Emerson Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, and Yale New Haven Medical Center. Throughout his career, he became known as a dependable physician who focused on delivering results and quality patient care.

Building Institutions, Not Just a Practice In 2005, Raj founded ASC Middlesex Endoscopy Center, LLC, to improve patient access to efficient care outside of a hospital setting. He served as the facility's President until 2023.

This initiative reflected his commitment to identifying needs and creating practical solutions.

His leadership responsibilities extended beyond his own organization. He served as President of the Medical Staff at Emerson Hospital from 2015-2017 and as a Board member from 2015-2019. He also served as Past President of the Massachusetts Gastroenterology Association and the American Association of Gastroenterologists of Indian Origin, advancing the specialty at both the state and national levels.

Beyond healthcare, he founded several companies in other industries, demonstrating an interest in business development and innovation.

Industry Recognitions and Accomplishments Raj has served as a speaker for Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Forest Pharmaceuticals, and AstraZeneca. In addition, he has worked as a consultant for Boston Scientific and Pentax Corporation.

He also served on the Medical Advisory Boards of Cristcot Corporation and Allurion Corporation.

Raj's expertise has reached audiences outside the medical community as well. He has appeared on television programs where he has explained common gastrointestinal diseases in a practical, understandable manner.

Among his accomplishments, he holds a share of a patent for an HCA drug formulation that has been tested worldwide and is currently awaiting FDA approval. If approved, the treatment could provide an additional option for patients.

Life Beyond Medicine Outside of his medical career, he enjoys a variety of activities, including golf, tennis, chess, bridge, and skiing. These interests have helped provide balance alongside the demands of a busy professional life.

As the father of two adult children, Raj considers parenthood one of the most meaningful aspects of his life. He also values community service and creating opportunities for others.

One of his notable contributions involved supporting a school in India. He also volunteers at the Acton Food Pantry, where he assists with local community needs and remains actively involved in service efforts.

A Career Built on Depth and Expertise Today, Raj Devarajan serves as Global Medical Monitor at Cristcot. In this position, he applies his extensive clinical knowledge and regulatory experience to support and evaluate drug development programs.

The role allows him to apply the expertise he has gained throughout his medical career while contributing to healthcare on a broader scale. He continues to build on decades of experience, guided by the same commitment to thoroughly understanding challenges and addressing them with thoughtful action.
