Overandoveroursurveysfindthatmembercomfortandcareisthesinglegreatestdriverofmember satisfactionandourmostpowerfultoolindrivingmembersretention.

So,weneedtoputaspecialemphasisonmembershipcareandbelonging.Andthatworkbeginswith listening.Weneedtounderstandwhyourmemberstookthebigleapandjoinedus-andweneedtoknow whattheyexpectfromus.WhatdotheywantoutoftheirRotaryinvolvementandwhatwecandoto helpthemgetmoreoutoftheirRotaryexperience?

WeallfeelthatimpacttheRotaryserviceandRotaryvalueshaveonus…nowit’souropportunityto sharethatfeelingwithothers.ThisisayeartoimagineRotarybeenvisioningaworldthatdeservesour best,wherewegetupeachdayknowingwecanmakeadifference.Wedon’timagineyesterday,we imaginetomorrow.

Weimagineaworldwithoutpolio,withcleanwaterforeveryone.Weimagineaworldfreeofdiseaseand whereeverychildlearnstoread.Weimaginekindness,hope,love,andpeace.

WehavejustnowcompletedRotaryYear2021-2022.RotaryInternational,our District3292andRotaryClubshavedoneourbesttothecommunitiesby providinghumanitarianservices,workinginpartnershipwiththeGovernment ofNepalandLocalAuthoritiestoservethecommunitiesattimesofglobalcrisis.

WebelieveinRotary’sFourWayTest,whichteachesusthatweasRotarians believeintrueandfairactionswhichwillbringgoodwillandwillbebeneficialto allconcerned.Rotary’sCoreValues:Fellowship,Diversity,Leadership,Service andaboveallIntegritymustguideeachandeveryRotarian.

WorkingforRotaryshouldbepassionandfun,andshouldnothavestressandpressure.Thenonlywecanenjoy Rotary.LookaroundforpeopletoworktogetherandRotarygivesusthatopportunitytodoservicewith fellowship.SometimespeoplemayaskwhichpartorsegmentofRotarywelike.Ouranswershouldalwaysbewe likeRotaryinentiretyandnotoneparticularportion.

Friendsmorethanfiftyyearsago,onepopularsongwasrecordedthatincludedthisbeautifulline: YoumaysayI’madreamerButI’mnottheonlyone.

Friends,weallhavedreams,butactingonthemisachoice.Anditbecomesourresponsibilitytomakethese dreamsareality.Letusimagineaworldthatdeservesourbest,wherewegetupeachdayknowingthatwecan makeadifference.

Withabovevision,RotaryInternationalPresidentJenniferJoneshasgiventhetheme“ImagineRotary”forthe year2022-2023.OurdistricthasourTheme“Togetherforabetterworld”.

ByfocusingonourstrategicplanandexpandsourreachbyengagingtheFamilyofRotaryateveryage,gender andculturetocreatelastingchange,wecanseeRotaryincreasesourimpact.Wehavetogivemoreemphasison diversity,equityandinclusiontoachievegrowthinfemalemembershipandmembersundertheageofforty howeverwithoutlosingthesightofmembershipretention.Wealsoshouldworkforgirlchildeducationleadingto womenempowerment.

First,IwouldliketocongratulateRtn.SachinAwaleforsuccessfullycompleting hisPresidencyfortheyear2021-22.Iwanttoexpressmyheartfeltthanksto eachandeveryRotarianinRCKathmanduHeightforcarryingoutthecritical tasksneededtoourclubinthesechallengingtimes.Eachofyouisan extraordinaryexampleofcommitment,professionalismandteamwork.

IamhonoredtobethePresidentoftheRotaryClubofKathmanduHeightfor theyear2022-23.Itissuchadynamicandvibrantclubthatitgivesmegreat pleasuretoserveinthiscapacity.IasaPresidentwouldliketoworkwithevery individualmemberinprojects,meetingandorganizeeventssothatwecan betterunderstandeachotherandmakedifferences.

CanyouimaginelivinginaworldwhereeveryonemeasurestheiractionsviatheFour-WayTestofRotary?A worldwheretrust,respectforoneanother,sharing,relationships,fairness,andprovidingbeneficialservices, serveasthecompassforsuccess.Rotarianscanimaginesuchaworld.

Wecanallbeproudofourabilitytoadaptanduniteandcontinuetoliveourmottoeachday:ServiceAboveSelf. Wehavecontinuedtodeliversupporttothemostvulnerableinourcommunities,aswellasaddressthemany additionalneedsthathavesurfacedduetodifferentsituations.

IwillfollowinthefootstepsofCPandIPPofourclubwhohaveeachbeenexceptionalexamplesofserviceand leadership.Likewise,Iamprivilegedtohaveanincredibleteamofprofessionalsandcommunityleaderscurrently servingwithmeontheBoardoftheRotaryClubofKathmanduHeight,whoareeachexampleoflivinguptothe organization’saspirationtoputserviceaboveself.

AsourRIPresidentJenniferJonesformulated22/23theme“imagineRotary,yes“Itisourofferofhands-on service,personalgrowth,leadershipdevelopment,andlifelongfriendshipsthatcreatespurposeandpassion,”. Imagineaworldthatdeservesourbestwherewegetupeachdayknowingthatwecanmakeadifference.

Althoughweallhavedreams,actingonthemisachoicewemake.WhenourorganizationRotarydreamsabout bigthingslikeendingpolioandcreatingpeace,itbecomesourresponsibilitytomakethemhappen.“Wedon’t imagineyesterday,weimaginetomorrow.”

Finally,withasenseofgreatresponsibilityandhope,Iaskallofyoutoworkwithme,startingnowandformany yearstocome,inbuildingonRCKH'sexcellence,deepeningthemutualsupportofthisextraordinaryworld,and continuingtotakethatleadershipoutintotheworld.

The Fun and Joy of Living a Life-Rotary Way

(I have written this article for publication in Club Souvenir of Rotary Clubs)

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

I salute you all our Fellow Rotarians for undertaking a great stride of joining Rotary World and becoming a “Rotarian”. Being a true “Rotarian” means a lot -not only for ourselves, but also for our own family, for our society, for our country and for the whole world when we get truly indoctrinated with Rotary Core Values and when we live with true Rotary Essence to serve those less privileged and make a difference.

is no greater satisfaction than that which comes from serving others.

Fellowship

We believe that individual efforts focus on individual needs, but combined efforts serve humanity. The power of combined efforts knows no limitation, multiplies resources, and broadens our lives and perspectives. Fellowship generates greater tolerance of others and transcends all boundaries, including those of race, gender, and nationality and helps us to build life a long relationship bonded by the selfless motive of “Service above Self.”

Diversity

We believe Rotary unifies all people internationally behind the ideal of service. We encourage diversity of vocations within our membership and in our activities and service work. By inculcating diversity in our club membership, we can also get diverse perspective to better understand the people and community’s situation and get the best way to tackle the situation. A club that reflects its business and professional community is a club with a key to its future.

The Core Values of Rotary –Service, Fellowship or friendship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership serve as guiding principles for our actions and priorities, and remain at the heart of the organization today.

Service

We believe that our service activities and programs bring about greater world understanding and peace. Service is a major element of our mission. Through the plans and actions of individual clubs, we create a culture of service throughout our organization. There

Integrity

Accountability, honesty, and ethics are the backbone of our organization and something we expect from each of our leaders and members both in the results of our efforts and in the process; we use to accomplish our goals. We walk the talk and take responsibility for our actions. We adhere to high ethical and professional standards in our work and personal relationships. We are fair and respectful in our interactions, and we conscientiously steward the resources entrusted to us.

We develop and maintain integrity in all our human relations. We as the leadership in our respective fields find solution and take action to improve the situation of people we serve.

Leadership

We are a global fellowship of individuals who are leaders in their fields of endeavor. We believe in the importance of leadership development and in leadership as a quality of our members. As Rotarians, we are leaders in implementing our core values and hope to inspire others towards the Ideal of “Service above self”.

Paul Harris says, “No matter what we do within Rotary, but for people outside Rotary, Rotary matters only when it makes a difference.”

 Do you feel truly satisfied being a Rotarian?

 Are you ready to talk with a great gusto what does it mean to be a Rotarian to a non-Rotarian?

 Do you embody the Core Values – Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership of Rotary, get the inner strength, and present yourself as a living example and a source of inspiration to non-Rotarians who get inspired by you and your action to get them attracted to Rotary?

If your answer is big “YES” to all above questions, then Bravo! I salute you. Rotary survives and flourish because of the members like you!

The Rotary becomes a word in the mouth of people; the Rotary becomes what makes a difference. Because of the members like you, Rotary is making a real difference to the world and bringing peace to world community following the Rotary motto “Service above Self” and “Doing Good in the World.”

But if you are not certain of answering “YES” to above questions, then I would like you to ponder on few more questions (In fact, I am time and again asking these questions to myself).

 Do you see any difference between being a true Rotarian and being just a member of a Rotary Club?

A true Rotarian embody the Core Values of Rotary and gives his/her Time, Treasure and Talent to Rotary and feel personally accountable to find solution to the problems faced by communities in distress.

The joy of being a Rotarian comes, when we feel proud of being a Rotarian. This feeling of pride being a Rotarian comes when we touch the heart of people with our selfless acts coming out of our love and compassion to serve those most in needs in the society. That is how we get joy and fun of being a Rotarian; when we get the inner core of our heart fill with a sense of fulfillment; when we get a meaning to our life in serving community in needs for a cause higher than ourselves that surpasses all other achievements – wealth, materialistic possession, prestige, power or position.

Having said this, let us ask ourselves few questions and be candid to express our true feeling:

This is in difference to Rotarians who are being just the member of a Rotary Club who in the extreme side may not necessarily embody the Core Values of Rotary, nor commit to any Rotary actions and may mostly stay just as passive observers to the situation.

 Are you also like many others - always and all the time expecting from others?

 Are you expecting Rotary should do this, the Governor or District Leaders should have done that or the Club President or Club Leaders should have done this?

 Do we see always some lacking in Rotary?

 When will Rotary becomes the Right Organization for us and meet our expectations?

However, I suppose Rotary will be the RIGHT organization for us and for others, when we as individual becomes the RIGHT members for Rotary, not the other way round. Collectively when all of us get ourselves RIGHT by indoctrinating the Rotary Core Values – Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership, and The Four-Way Test, when we lead our life by these values and norms, then Rotary becomes RIGHT, and the world becomes RIGHT. We get transformed into the RIGHT people who care for people with our selfless thoughts and acts, who put “Service above Self” as the essence of life and the Core Values as mentioned above as our basic inherent (Rotarian) Characters.

If each of us like John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask yourself what you can do for your countries.” - we should also similarly ask, as an individual Rotarian -what I can throw up my hands and assume responsibility and be the instrument in the course of purpose of the Rotary. Instead of asking what you get from the District Governor, from your Club President, or from Rotary in general, ask yourself, what can you give, contribute to your Club and District to help them function better and make a difference together.

Each of us can make ourselves “Be a Gift to the World” by “Making a Difference” by “Serving Humanity” and “Connected to the World” to promote “Peace through Service”. In fact, the richest way to live and enjoy life is to go into relationship with “what can I give rather than what do I receive”.

Now I am sure, we all have a question in our mind to ask, “What’s it in for me, what I get in Return if I have to always give my TIME, TREASURE and TALENT to Rotary as expected?”

I believe, if you truly seek from the depth and inner core of your heart, you will get the satisfactory answers to these questions. However, for this, we need to first go deeper into our soul and ask ourselves “What is it that we are truly seeking in our life? Do we understand what satisfies our inner core needs?”

Even after you have achieved some level of success in your life such as accumulation of wealth and prosperity, prestige and position in the society, many still most often feel a void at the inner core of our heart, the feeling of futility of these materialistic and outer achievements when you come closer to your deathbed. The only way for you to experience your

life filled with full satisfaction and to make yourself feel really great inside your heart is to make sure that your life is lived pretty so well by letting your life being used for the purpose higher than yourself, you have nothing left undone and have no regret in life.

And Rotary is a great platform where we are given this great opportunity to achieve all these highest human needs – to build meaningful relationship, to find ourselves in selfless service to the mankind, & together ultimately find fulfillment & inner peace. This is in true sense how we find the joy and fun of being a Rotarian.

Three Ways to find Fun and Joys of Living a Life Rotary Way.

I personally find following three different ways to find Fun and Joys of living a life Rotary Way:

1. Building Life-Long Friendship and Relationship

Friendship and cordial relationship between the members & connection with people have always been one of the basic social and emotional needs of people since the time of human existence. In Rotary, we expand this friendship to a deeper level of mutual understanding & compassion for each other from the

Club, District to Rotary International level, sharing and learning from each other, to promote goodwill, understanding and peace among ourselves by taking joint actions for the people in need, thus strengthening the bond of humankind. It is really a great FUN and the JOY to have a company of such like-minded people to come together for a common cause of serving above self and making a difference.

Engaging in Rotary is really a great Excitement and Fun of life.

skills to handle projects that fulfill the humanitarian needs of people etc. and many more.

3. RealizingaSignificantMeaningtoLife

By our joint actions of selfless service to community in needs and embracing the core values of Rotary to guide us in our everyday life, we transform ourselves into better human beings. We find more joys in seeking the meaning and significance to our lives in terms of how much we are being able to make a difference to people we come into contact in the society we belong to and beyond. This way, we achieve the sense of living our life to its truest highest potential beyond the cycle of life and death, towards the stage of a life of truest fulfillment.

It is one of the best motivations for Club members to keep engaged in the Clubs and enjoy the opportunities to develop various skills for their own personal growth and development by being engaged in many different ways in Rotary. These skills may include: (i) Leadership skills by taking responsibility of different leadership positions; (ii) Communication skills to inspire other leaders effectively to make a difference; (iii) People skills to deal with different opinions of fellow Rotarians and (iv) Management

Tellusaboutyourpresidentialtheme.

ThethemeisgoingtobeCreateHopeintheWorld.I'magreatbelieverthateverythingstartswithhope.WhileIwasin ThailandinauguratingavillagethatRotaryInternationalinGreatBritainandIrelandhadbuiltafterthe2004IndianOcean tsunami,Imetalady.Shelookedtobeabout70or80yearsofage,anditturnedoutshewasonlyabout50.Shehadlost everythinginthetsunami.Herhousehadbeendestroyed.AndasIlookedaroundherhouse,therewasnothingelsethere. Thiswasanewhome,butshehadlosteverything.ButsheinsistedItakeaseashellthatshehadsavedforover30years. Shesaid,"Ihadlosteverything,includinghope.ButRotaryhasgivenmehopetocontinue."AndIhavethisshelltothisday. Ifpeopledon'thavehope,thentheywillneverbeabletomaketheirwayforward.It'sacalltoaction:Createhopeinthe world.

Whatareyourpriorities?

Intermsofcontinuity,wewanttocarryonempoweringgirlsandwomen.Also,we'regoingtobeencouragingpeopletodo virtualexchanges.Thatwillspeaktopeacebuildingfromthegroundup.It'snotaboutstoppingwars;it'saboutstopping warsfromstarting.Preventionisbetterthancure.Almosteveryoneofourareasoffocushasthepotentialtodothat. Thethirdthingisamentalhealthinitiative.Comingoutofthepandemic,therearealotofpeoplewhoarestrugglingwith poormentalhealth.Ithinkit'sthenextpandemic.I'vegotexperiencewithfriendswhohavesufferedpoormentalhealth.I guesswe'veallsufferedthroughpoormentalhealthonoccasions.Rotaryhastobebigenoughandbraveenoughtoenter thatspaceandtostarttalkingaboutwherewecanmakeadifference.Atthemostbasiclevel,it'sjustopeningupthe conversationaboutmentalhealthandhelpingpeoplegetaccesstoanyprofessionalhelpthattheymightneed,andthen supportingthemthroughthatjourney.

Ilostmybrothertosuicide.It'sstillverypainful.Isharethisnottogetpeople'ssympathy,buttomakepeoplerealizethat everybodyisaffectedbythissortofthing.Wecan'tsweepitunderthecarpet.Asaglobalnetworkof1.4millionpeople, wedohaveanopportunitytomakeadifferenceinmakingitlessofatabooandlessofastigma.

YouhavealsoservedaspresidentofRotaryInternationalinGreatBritainandIreland.Whatdidyoulearnfromthat experiencethatyou'llbringtothisrole?

Ilearnedhowtosleepindifferentbedseverytwoorthreedays—ItraveledagreatdealduringthatyeararoundBritain andIreland.IlearnedthatRotaryclubsarealldifferent,andthateverybodyhasadifferentinterest.Noteverybodyisas passionateasIam—I'dsometimesfeelI'mabitofazealot.Buteverybodyhassomething.Andthesecretistotapinto people'sinterestsandtomakesurethatthey'reallowedtodothingsthattheywanttodo.Thatspeakstobringing membersinaswell.Wedon'tbringmembersinandthentellthemwhattheyneedtodo.Webringmembersinandask themwhatRotarycandoforthem.

I'dprobablybeanincisor,becausethat'sthefirsttooththatdoesthework.Youdon'tshoveanythingstraighttothevery back.Youleadwithyourincisors,andIliketothinkIleadfromthefront.Thatsaid,anincisorisnomoreimportantthan anyothertooth;allareequallyimportantintheeatingprocess.

Pakistan’sfemalevaccinatorsaredoingmorethanhelpingendadisease

Womenmakeuptwo-thirdsofPakistan’spolioworkforce.It’sastartlingstatisticforanationthat ranks145thoutof146countriesforgenderparityineconomicparticipationandopportunity, accordingtoaWorldEconomicForumgenderinequalityindex.

Theroleoffemalevaccinatorsisbornofnecessity.Becauseofculturalnorms,menarenotallowed intomanypeople’shomesinPakistan.Womenwhoprovidethehealthcarearethekeylink.They canbuildmom-to-momrelationshipsandprovidetrustedadviceonnotonlypoliobutotherhealth issues.

“Womenworkingwithwomenonthefrontlineisgoingtobewhatgetsusacrossthefinishline,” saysRotaryPresidentJenniferJones,whometlastyearwithpolioworkersinPakistan.Thecountry andAfghanistanaretheonlytwowherewildpoliovirusisstilltransmittedpersistently.

Thefemalevaccinators’workisneithersafenoreasy.ThewomeninPakistanareswornat,shoved, beaten,andsomeevenkilled.They’refightingmisinformation.Buttheirworkiscrucial—andnot justforthecauseofpolioeradication.

“Theyaresupportingtheireducation,they’resupportingtheirhousehold,they’resupportingtheir menandgivingachangeinPakistan,”saysSadiaShakeel,coordinatorforaRotary-supportedpolio resourcecenterinKarachi.“Thisisbiggerthanpolio.”

Shakeelcallsthem“littleentrepreneurs.”Mostofthewomenrangeinagefrom21-38andhave theirownchildren,shesays.Yettheywaketosayprayersbeforedawn,feedtheirchildren breakfast,andleavetostarttheirworktoendadisease.

EmployingwomenisonekeystrategyoftheGlobalPolioEradicationInitiative.Andthat’snotjustto deliverthevaccinesatthefrontline;it’salsotohirewomenassupervisors,doctors,anddecisionmakers.“Wecannotsucceedwithoutthewomenwehaveintheprogramatalllevels,”saysHamid Jafari,apediatricinfectiousdiseasedoctoranddirectorofpolioeradicationfortheWorldHealth Organization’sEasternMediterraneanregion.

Femalehealthworkerscanenterhomeswheremalehealthworkerswouldnotbeallowed.
