EDITORIAL STEAMING enters its third year and its first Editor may well be proud of its success; nevertheless I feel sure that members could provide much material to make still more interesting reading. What I have in mind covers exploits and adventures with engines, hints and tips on driving, care and maintenance, etc. Correspondence columns can also be both amusing and profitable. I should be grateful for any comments on what Steaming should contain. With a warning that the Editorial remarks are the Editor's own and do not necessarily convey the opinions of the Committee, I draw your attention to the motion on Boiler Inspections passed at the A.G.M. It must be admitted that there have been criticisms, partly based on difficulties involved for owners of more than one engine, and partly on the attitude said to be adopted by certain boiler inspectors involving a prior condemnation of boilers over a certain age (the majority of our engines), welded repairs, etc. It is also urged that boiler explosion of a traction engine was almost unknown (ploughing engines were exceptional cases). On the other hand an accident at a rally might cause injury or death, not
only to the engine crew, but to spectators. How many of our members could give a satisfactory reply to the Coroner's question " What are your qualifications for saying the boiler was in good condition? " Of course a boiler inspection is not a hundred per cent guarantee against accident, and some members are probably quite as good judges of a boiler as a qualified inspector, but the Club is hardly competent to say so, and the Club is responsible for bringing thousands of people within a few feet of various boilers any one of which may be owned by somebody who knows nothing of boilers, or, worse still, knows everything! While engine parts can last indefinitely, anno domini has the same effect on boilers as on members, and I suppose a very large proportion of engines are getting on for forty years old. Wasting of boiler plate can go on even when an engine is not working, possibly even more so. The Club has a duty to urge, and enforce where it can, reasonable safety precautions. So far, in spite of very questionable practices both in ring and paddock, rallies have been free from accident. Do not break the record.
FROM THE CHAIRMAN (Philip Wright's Column)
WITH this issue we welcome the new Editor, the Revd. R. C. Stebbing, whose technical knowledge and literary ability is already known and appreciated by enthusiasts everywhere. We are also very indebted to Dr. G. Romanes for having taken over a mere leaflet and made it into a firstclass little magazine which is destined to grow even bigger as time goes on.
* The Annual General Meeting will be covered in another column. May I say how delighted we were to see such a large and interested company present. It was also gratifying to discover the trust and confidence they were willing to place in the Committee. It was a long meeting and perhaps too full an agenda for an A.G.M. We have, however, wanted to show what had been accomplished in this remarkable period since the last A.G.M.
In September I took the family for their first glimpse of Scotland via a week's tour. Near the Devil's Elbow a fine Fowler Steam Roller was at work resplendent in new paint in which bright red predominated. A fair had just arrived at Pitlochry and here I met the proprietors the Wright family of Stirling (no relations). Although now having gone over to diesel they formerly owned a very fine Burrell Showman's Engine " Nonsuch " which was steered throughout the war by Mrs. Wright, often tackling those Scottish hills with a load of nine wagons. At Edinburgh my valuable microcord camera, together with a good pair of binoculars, were stolen from my locked car. The camera has since been recovered from an Edinburgh pawnshop by the City police! The White Horse Hotel at Leiston, Suffolk, has just opened up a Garrett

Room in which are displayed framed pictures showing the history of that famous firm which began in Leiston in 1774. A photo in the East Anglian Daily Times of 14th November shows seventy-two year old Mr. G. Forsdike discussing the pictures with Mr. G. Kay on Messrs. Garrett's sales staff. M r. Forsdike began a long career at the works at the age of fifteen. I am hoping my book on Traction Engines will be published in 1959.
*
My reading of Punch has usually been confined to either dentists' or doctors' waiting-rooms. I have, however, bought their Christmas number entitled Punch Almanac. 1959, after having been shown an article by E. S. Turner on " Clubability". He deals with the Britishers' fondness for clubs in a humorous manner and then he goes on: " A kindred body is the National Traction Engine Club. The interest created by its Rallies is by no means confined to the Fancy. Old-time cavalry mano:uvres produced nothing more stirring than the sight of
Valiant, Dauntless, Fearless and Tiger and the rest with their flywheels flashing fire, snorting in line abreast towards the spectators. No less inspiring in its way was the sight of two Vicars at Baldock racing each other on ploughing engines. At an Essex Traction Engine Rally it was again left to a clergyman to announce (this time to a crowd of five thousand) the number of ancient equipages rescued from the scrapheap. A feature of traction engine rallies is the rally's steering event. This clearly is the organisers' answer to the problem which vexes all clubs ; whether to admit the womenfolk to limited participation or to let them stand round and sap their partners' enthusiasm by ill-informed niggling. A woman who has been privileged to steer a traction engine will more readily undertake such tasks as selling raffic tickets (as at Appleford) for a prime condition 1916 Wallis & Steevens." There is a small cartoon drawing of a Showman's engine which strongly suggests "Kitchener " owned by our worthy Vice-Chairman Mr. John Crawley.
THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING UNDER the chairmanship of the Revd.
Philip Wright, some 110 members from all parts of the country assembled at the White Hart Hotel, Kings Road, Chelsea, on 25th October ; below are extracts from the Minutes. Ths. Rentinel Pngine *iven by the North Thames Gas Board may be disposed of to a member for preservation. A vote of thanks to Mr. J. Crawley for his work in connection with the Engine Raffle was accorded. The Secretary hoped for more help from members at Rallies. The Treasurer drew attention to the sum of £1.368 in hand as against last year's deficit of £88 (full statement in October issue of Steaming); he thought this balance should be held against a rainy day. Consideration of this was referred to the Committee. Consent was given to ending the financial year on 1st September. ft was pointed out that the item " Mr. Durrant's expenses " covered payments for stationery. Changes among Officers and Committee were as follows: In place of an Assistant Secretary, Mr. J. G.
Hutchens becomes Membership Secretary ; Mr. G. J. Romanes relinquishes the Editorship of Steaming to the Revd. R. C. Stebbing ; Messrs. E. A. Fillmore, A. Fensom, E. L. Bates, H. I. Gilbert, F. Barker and T. L. Chamnion become new members of Committee ; Messrs. N. L. Dickson, A. J. Martin, S. A. Smith and A. C. Durrant, to general regret, not accepting nomination. Thanks were accorded to the retiring Editor of Steaming the Committee would consider future policy with regard to this magazine. Mr. Moules' motion concerning Local Groups was, after discussion, referred back to the Committee, as was also the matter of affiliation fees. The following motion was passed with only one dissentient: "As from 1st January, 1959, it would be a condition that before any engine could be accepted to take part in any rally organised by the Club, a current and satisfactory certified boiler inspector's certificate must be produced ". After an interval for refreshment, about 50 members enjoyed a show of lantern slides by Mr. Crawley.

J. & H. McLaren Ltd., Airedale Works, Leeds, 10. 21st August, 1958. P. A. Mathieson, Esq., Stanway, Cheltenham, Glos. Dear Sir, We wish to thank you for your letter of the 15th of August regarding a photograph you have in your possession of a McLaren Steam Engine. When McLaren's were building steam engines various types of road wheels were fitted and these road wheels were manufactured by McLaren's. You refer to a spring spoke road locomotive. A limited number of these engines were built, the first one was supplied for work in France and it was used for drawing a trailer carrying postal packages in France. This was over fifty years ago. When on test at Leeds the engine was taken out into the country and speeds up to fourteen miles an hour were obtained. Such a speed was, of course, not legally permissible, and a special site had to be selected for these tests. It was employed for some years in the postal service. Another type of road wheel used by McLaren's was one in which blocks were inserted into the wheel, the outer surface of the block being covered with wood and between the underside of the block and the wheel rim springs were
5
fitted. Other engines have been supplied with wooden blocks built round the wheel in the form of a brick arch. McLaren traction engines were the first in the country to be fitted with solid rubber tyred wheels. The tyres were manufactured by McIntosh and the traction engine was owned by Norman Box, of Manchester. We trust this information will be of interest to you. Yours faithfully, for J. & H. McLaren Ltd. J. A. BARBER, Personal Assistant to the Sales Manager. PHOTOGRAPHS. I have recently purchased McLaren Ploughing Engine No. 1541 which was new to Courage, of Sutton Scotney. I would be grateful if any member who can give me details or lend me photographs of this engine at work would write to me.— J. Crawley, 51 Putnoe Lane, Bedford. BUNGAY RALLY APOLOGIES are due to the East Anglian Club for ascribing to them the Bungay Rally (October issue, p. 10). This very successful function was sponsored by G. C. Howlett, Esq. and took place on his land at Woodton Old Hall near Bungay. Messrs. H. Whipps and H. Webb were responsible for organisation.

FROM THE CLUBS BEDFORDSHIRE Outdoor activity in the Club has, of course, slowed down with the coming of the winter months. Our regular meetings on the first Monday in each month are always well supported. Member J. Dowland, of Bedford, has just recently purchased Fowler Traction Engine No. 11357 from Kitchener's, of Potton, Beds. This was the last Agricultural Engine owned by this firm, who at one time owned many sets of ploughing and threshing tackle. Although she is in a very rough condition and has a quantity of parts missing, she has a post-war firebox which was put in by Gower, of Bedford, circa 1945. John Crawley recently purchased a McLaren Ploughing Engine No. 1541 which he hopes to get home, cleaned up and re-tubed in time for next year's Rallies. His Thornycroft Wagon No. 39 was recently steamed some twenty miles to Northampton, where she is undergoing body repairs and repainting, etc. His Fowler " Kitchener " No. 15657 was recently seen towing his Burrell " William V " No. 3610 en route from Woburn to Bedford. This year the Bedford Agricultural Society are celebrating their 150th Agricultural Show and have approached the Society to organise a Parade of Engines (a maximum of 16) through Bedford on the Saturday morning, finishing up on the Showground where they will be on show to the public. As His Grace the Duke of Bedford, who is the President of the Bedford Steam Engine Society, is this year's President of the Bedfordshire Agricultural Society, he has agreed to steer the leading engine in the Parade ; after all as His Grace said, " What's a lamp-post between friends." Richard Capon has been out with his Fowler No. 11698 to assist in nulling out and towing J. Dowland's Fowler, which was located on rather soft ground. On the first Monday of every month we hold a Social Meeting at 7.30 p.m. at the King's Arms Hotel, St. Mary's Street, Bedford. Any enthusiast who should find himself in the Bedford area is assured of a warm welcome. J .C.
CORNWALL The 1959 Rally organised by the West of England Steam Engine Society will be held on 18th July, near Camborne, but in a much larger field than in previous years. This will provide car-parking accommodation for all but late-comers, and adjacent fields will be available for any vehicle which cannot be parked in the Rally field. In spite of extremely bad weather for the 1958 Rally, about 7,000 people attended. Since that date three more engines (a McLaren, an Aveling & Porter roller and a Garrett tractor) have been purchased for preservation in Cornwall and they are all at present at Coombe Caravan Camp, near Camborne, where anyone interested can see them at any time. The McLaren, No. 547 (BD5448), was bought from Mr. J. P. Bury of Great Tew, Oxford, by C. P. Gregory who, with Mr. J. M. C. Winn of Bude as chief driver and his daughters, Misses P. and K. Gregory as a very capable crew, steamed it to its new home at Coombe in the early part of August when the " summer " weather was at its worst! Not withstanding the engine's great age, it was built in 1894, the long journey of 245 miles was completed without any trouble—a great tribute to its builders and to its former owners. The McLaren is a very plain threshing engine, beautifully designed but without springs, belly-tank, injector or canopy. The latter would have been appreciated last August! The A. & P. roller, No. 10187 (FX8131), was recently bought from Messrs. Eddisons by two partners— Mr. Pearse of Kehelland, Camborne and Mr. Leath of St. Ives. With the great help of Mr. J. Warren it was steamed from its last place of work near Bodmin to its present restingplace at Coombe where, in a sheltered corner, it will be renovated in time for 18th July. This is a single cylinder piston valve engine, and is complete with scarifier, canopy and water-cart. " Oueenie," the Garrett tractor, No. 34789 (YB7841), new in 1926 to Mr. Parker of Ilchester, Somerset, remained on his property after having been purchased a few years ago by Mr. R. Raynor of Langport. As he
STEAMING was unable to find suitable accommodation nearer, Mr. Raynor was obliged to cycle eight miles each way from Langport when he wished to do any work on his engine and owing to this he recently decided to sell it. Miss E. Rule, a member of the W.E.S.E.S., bought " Queenie ", and the engine was steamed the 145 miles from Ilchester to Coombe in December by L. B. Hosking of St. Buryan and C. P. Gregory. Numerous steam leaks, a temperamental pump and injector and the necessity of many adjustments slowed down progress at the commencement of the trip, but by the time " Queenie " reached Cornwall, she was running very nicely, thanks to the ability of Mr, limiting, who dealt adequately with each trouble as it arose. The engine
had been idle for about twelve years so a few initial hindrances were expected. Now that Miss Rule has her engine near home, she is anxious to complete the work started by Mr. Raynor. He has set a high standard
but all who know Miss Rule are confident that she will maintain it. Ladies have owned steam engines in the past, but for business purposes. I wonder whether Miss Rule is the first lady to buy an engine purely for preservation ? C.P.G. NORTH OF ENGLAND Mr. John Younger recently had his Fowler 8 h.p. single cylinder piston valve ploughing engine under steam to pull out a Marshall threshing machine from a soft field where it had last been used. The engine was set at the gateway and the rope pulled out to the threshing machine, which was sitting well in. With a gentle beat and with very little effort the machine was drawn out, causing very little churning to the field. It is believed that this is the only 8 h.p. piston valve ploughing engine still in existence ; there is a 12 h.p. single cylinder piston valve engine on the West side of the country. Mr. P. R. Bates of Leadgate, Consett, has recently purchased " Repulse ", which was the last steam engine owned by Mr. John Murphy the well-known amusement caterer. This 8 h.p. Fowler is a sister to " Renown " which is owned by our Chairman, Mr. T. E. Tate. The " Repulse " has stood fourteen years in a yard but restoration is already under way, and it is hoped that it
7
will be ready in time for our next Rally to go along with " King of the Road," another Fowler 8 h.p. showmans' engine owned by Mr. Bates. Philip Ogden and John Alderson have now got their special scenic Burrell " The Dolphin " home at last, and under her own steam. According to Philip, she is the quietest, smoothest and easily the fastest engine he has ever ridden on, and he tells me that he averaged 20 miles per hour between Huddersfield and Leeds, being clocked at 24 miles per hour several times, and this without forcing the pace. Philip tells me that he has now disposed of his 1934 Marshal traction engine " Surprise " and has got a short chassis Foden wagon with showmans' fittings. Restoration has already commenced on " The Dolphin " and it is to be hoped that we shall see her J.Y. during the coming season. WEALD OF KENT Activities have taken a quieter turn for the winter, but there are one or two events that call for mention. A Tonbridge member, Mr. J. C. Butler, who already owns a 1934 S-type Sentinel, has now increased his stud by the acquisition of a Foden tipper chassis (No. 13848) of 1932, bought new by Derbyshire County Council and afterwards in turn by Wirksworth Quarries, R. M. Woolley of Bucknell and Charlie Edwards of Ledbury. He towed it home from Ledbury with the Sentinel, a round trip of about 320 miles. This was in the latter part of October, but he has since acquired a 1911 Yorkshire wagon, complete (except for Maker's plates, etc.) and apart from the boiler, more or less in working order. The boiler requires retubing and some building up, and of course, relagging. The bodywork is nearly all gone, but work has already begun on the restoration. At Horsmonden things have been undergoing a change. Mrs. Wilson has sold her Aveling & Porter traction (No. 9010) to Dr. Green of Bexhill. Dr. Green's other engines, Burrell No. 4081 and Aveling & Porter tractor No. 12186 have gone to Mr. Cushing of Thursford, Norfolk, and the doctor has acquired from Mrs. Lambert (widow of the late Chris Lambert) the old Aveling & Porter road locomotive (No. 4561)

She is No. 19032, one of a batch sent out new to the Netherlands East Indies and afterwards repatriated. There are still nineteen steam rollers in commercial employment within a twenty-five mile radius of Tonbridge, and two more which are normally at work, but are laid off for repair. It is hoped to hold a Rally at Paddock Wood on 15th August this R.W. year. EAST ANGLIA Flt./Lt. Hilton has recently been blowing the cobwebs away on his Tasker No. 1709. Steve Neville has recently purchased a McLaren road locomotive which he and Dick Martino are in the course of steaming home. Mr. Cushing of Thursford has just Purchased the Burrell No. 4081 and Aveling & Porter road locomotive No. 12186 from Dr. Green of Bexhill. It is reported that Dr. Green has just purchased the Burrell showman's engine No. 3949 " Princess Mary " from Charles Preslands of Tilbury. N.D. McLaren No. 547 with Mr. C. P. Gregory. (See " From the Clubs," Cornwall.)
Local Groups v. New and Affiliated Clubs THERE have been three proposals for the formation of Local Groups during the past year. These requests came from West Sussex, the Midlands, and North Staffordshire and Cheshire. When discussed at the A.G.M. and in committee the idea of Local Groups received very little support, except rit. with which T f r^rr. a small mincrity was associated. The question has, however, now been resolved by a committee decision that rather than promote Local Groups, they recommend new clubs should be formed and affiliated to the N.T.E.C. I think it is interesting to consider the reasons which prompted members to ask for Local Groups. In two instances they felt the need for some local liaison through which they might meet for lectures or discussions, and perhaps arrange their own rally. They wished to continue their membership of this club, and the grouns would honour its rules, while remaining self-supporting. Arguments nut forward against such groups were: Difficulties of the club's officials keeping proper contact in order to assist the organisation, possibility of financial liability, and the additional work which could be caused
in the event of a large number of these Local Groups being established. In other words it was thought by the majority that the proposals were unworkable, and that new clubs would serve the purpose better. At the same time, new conditions are extended to affiliated clubs. For affiliation fee baned on the aeale of El Is. Od. per twenty-five members, the N.T.E.C. will supply sufficient copies of Steaming for the affiliated club's membership, except for those who are N.T.E.C. members as well, and who will receive Steaming direct by post from our printers. Deliveries will be sent in bulk, without envelopes, four times a year. Clubs at present affiliated to the N.T.E.C. are: East Anglian Traction Engine Club, Bedford Steam Engine Preservation Society, and the West of England Steam Engine Society. Would the secretaries of these clubs, as well as any others, please let me know whether the new offer is accepted. Payment of just under I /- for each member secures 6/- worth of Steaming, so it will be seen that the committee has been very generous. H. BONNETT, Hon. Secretary.

Ploughing engines at Rempstone. Tills photograph, sent by Mr. Dyson, shows in the foreground Beeby Bros'. 12 h.p. single cylinder engines. They are by no means in their original condition, having been rebuilt by their present owners on boilers supplied by the Oxford Steam Plough Co., the rebuild including larger hind wheels, new dome covers and safety valves, etc. Unfortunately their original numbers cannot, owing to these renewals, be traced. but the last pair r.f 12 b .p. anginas rprnraPd at T
left the Steam Plough Works in 1877. The first engines of this type came out in 1869, so that it is quite possible that the date of 1886 actually refers
to a works rebuild, after change of ownership. The pair in the background, Nos. 1544112 left J. Fowler & Co.'s works in 1920 ; Class BB1 they represent the latest type to be built, thus affording a contrast with one of the
earliest.
