publisher's note In each of our issues, we try to include a feature on individuals we call “Colorful Characters.” These are typically folks in Montana who exemplify the spirit and character of a life well lived under the big sky. We could also call them “salt of the earth,” because they are authentic and real. They’re the first ones to show up in a crisis and the last to leave. They are respected, trusted and they remain unwavering even amid difficulties.

With everything going on in our world today, we thought let’s devote the entire issue to a few of these men and women and let our readers be encouraged by their uplifting stories.

We had the privilege of stepping into the lives of people that have overcome adversity, challenged themselves, and are making a difference in their communities.

For these folks, hardships have not weakened them, but rather strengthened them. They live their lives steadfastly and face the future with an assurance that things will be ok. They don’t let anyone tell them it’s time to quit and when the going gets tough they do what needs to be done. They are an inspiration and we’re proud and honored to call them friends.

On a sorrowful note, as we were preparing this issue for print, we heard the sad news that one of the “salts” we are featuring had suddenly passed away. It was a stark reminder of just how fragile life is and how quickly things can change.

Gene Taber chose to live life fully. He died doing what he loved to do, working on his ranch, appreciating his land and his livestock, and taking care of his family.

That’s a lesson for all of us. We all need to take more time to enjoy and appreciate God’s creation, our families, and our freedom.

As we head into the holidays, we thought it would be fun to collaborate with small businesses around the area and put together a “Christmas Gift Guide.”

Featuring unique businesses in Big Timber, Red Lodge, Bridger, Joliet, and Billings, these are shops where the owners will either wait on you themselves, or at least be in the business. Please take the time to see what they have to offer, visit their shops or websites, or even make a day trip to visit their towns. Included are a couple of online businesses run by women that are ranching full time and using their talents to supplement their family’s incomes. Take a peek and see if you can’t fill your Christmas lists while keeping your shopping dollars local.

We’re also taking this opportunity to announce news from our family. Owning and publishing RITW for the past four years has put us in a position to grow.

We are partnering with our daughter, Melanie and son-in-law, Blaine Limpus and starting another magazine, which we call “Adventures in the West.” Based in Lander, WY, this new magazine will have much the same format as RITW, but will be geared toward stories about authentic, courageous people pursuing and enjoying an adventurous lifestyle in Wyoming and Montana. We anticipate a launch early in 2024, so buckle up and get ready for some exciting reads.

As we draw near to celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas, we hope that your heart is filled with peace, and you hold your family closely. This holiday, thank a veteran, a farmer, a rancher, a small business owner and anyone else who has or is sacrificing to make our lives better. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!

His Life Became a

Legacy 6/13/1939 – 10/26/2023 AUTHOR’S NOTE: On a beautiful fall day, Gene Taber welcomed myself, my mom, and my toddler son into his home for what could have been a quick, business-only interview for an article. But that’s not Gene. He basked in the opportunity to settle in for a long afternoon’s visit, only wrapping up in time to tend to his feedlot chores. Gathered in their humble kitchen, we chatted about his life before heading outside to tour the reclaimed cabin and barn and check out his numerous restored vehicles. Before parting, Gene invited us back into the house for tea, cookies and to peruse old photos. To say he was “full of life” would be an understatement. He radiated a joy for life that was infectious.

So, to hear that he suddenly passed just over 2 weeks later was completely shocking. He was an iconic rancher who allowed those around him to believe he would last forever, and, though he has left us in this world, memories of him will live up to that “never gone” impression we all gathered from his energy.

“If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

While the old adage is one of merit, for most it falls short of reality.

But the oft heard yet rarely achieved saying perfectly embodies Shawmut, Montana rancher Gene Taber. Finally reaching the age where most would “slow down” or even retire, 84 year-old Gene just “isn’t ready to quit.” In fact, while his wife of 56 years was on a recent fall tour of the eastern states, enjoying the phase of her life where breaks and vacations are feasible, Gene was more than happy to stay at the ranch.

“I pay good money to not have to go,” he joked of Linda’s vacation with their daughter. “I love what I do. If I can just get on my horse and move cows, that’s all I want to do.”

And that’s exactly what he’s done for the entirety of his life.

Gene’s grandfather came to Montana from Missouri in 1911 and homesteaded on Fish Creek. His father partnered with his granddad in purchasing some cows and Gene, like many in the era, grew up working alongside both men on the farm and ranch.

“Ever since I was ten, that’s all I wanted to do,” Gene said. “I never even thought I would do anything else besides ranch.”

After graduating from Ryegate High School, Gene was drafted into the Army and served two years on the 82nd Airborne Division. The fall he was drafted, his father had purchased a small place along the Mussellshell River, not far from the original homestead. Both Gene and his brother wanted to maintain what their grandfather started, but there wasn’t room for both families on the same place. His brother remained on the homestead and when Gene returned from the service in 1963, he settled into his lifelong goal of expanding the now-fifth generation Taber Ranch.

“I wanted to go out on my own and my dad said, ‘you can’t make it on your own, how are you going to pay for the land?’” Gene recalled with a laugh. “I should have told him, ‘don’t worry, you’ll get it back anyway if I can’t,’ but I just said, ‘I don’t know, I’ll figure out something.’”

And so started a long road of bank notes and hard work for both

Gene, and his new bride Linda. While Gene was laboring from sunup to sundown, Linda was consumed raising their five children – all the while, both were pinching pennies in an effort to grow the ranch.

“As long as we had food on the table, I could be satisfied,” Gene said. “We struggled along for a lot of years, and it hasn’t gotten any easier till the last few.”

“It takes about 40 years,” Linda said with a hardy laugh. “A lot of hard work.”

Since Gene began ranching, he has been continually expanding the land base and cattle numbers. In fact, he said from the time he returned from the Army until the early 2000s, he was consistently making land payments as small parcels and opportunities continued to arise around him – both a

blessing and a challenge.

“We had to borrow money for everything – the land, the operating expenses, and the bank owned the cows,” Gene said.

“You can’t make much headway, and if we did, we would try to increase our numbers or buy more real estate.”

Despite the struggle, Gene considered himself fortunate in more ways than one. He “ran into a lot of good luck” with land purchases from neighbors who were willing to owner finance him.

More importantly, he was building a legacy that could be passed down to the upcoming generations and, as the adage goes, he loved every bit of the work.

“It took years and years, but we were doing what we wanted to do and that’s what mattered,” Gene said.

He admitted that the long days of labor forced him to miss out on his childrens’ sports games and occasional milestones, “but they always knew they had a dad,” he said. And while Linda said those were choices he had to make, finding help was a luxury they couldn’t afford at the time.

“We couldn’t afford the help we needed and the help we could afford we didn’t need,” Gene joked. “But on a ranch, you won’t fudge on the feed, or the cows, but we could fudge on the help. I did what I had to do to keep it together, and I seemed to think I had to be there or it would all fall apart.”

It all paid off and today, Gene still works daily on the ranch along with his son, Jimmy, and grandson, Dalton – the fourth and fifth generations who will continue the Taber Ranch for decades to come. When Dalton approached his grandfather about being a part of the family operation, Gene gave him a fair warning about the realities of ranching.

“I told Dalton there’s not going to be much money, there’s just going to be the joy of operating your own place,” Gene said. “Sure, you’ll eventually have something worth money, but not unless you sell it. It’s all about priorities and what is really important to you.

If you’re interested in ‘things,’ you’ll have to go get a town job because on a ranch, you won’t ever have a lot of ‘things’ and if you

do, you will probably break the ranch.”

Gene said his son, Jimmy, Dalton’s dad, was well aware of those truths as he grew up with his four siblings in a three bedroom, one bathroom house which Gene and Linda still occupy today and saw how his parents worked to provide for them on a strict budget. And obviously, having seen the homestead that started it all, Gene was accustomed to the humble lifestyle his career choice provided. Looking back, even through his hardships, Gene would be quick to say he had it easy.

“I thought we had a tough time, but it was nothing compared to what they did,” Gene said of the homesteading generation.

He said his parents were some of the few local homesteaders who were able to make a living in the unsettled area and he has since taken a keen interest in the history to learn “how they made it, or why others didn’t.” It’s also sparked a desire in Gene to preserve as much of the past as possible, as evidenced by the old immaculate cabin in his yard, a relocated and fully restored horse barn, and a shed full of tractors and pickups from as far back as the 1930s which all still run today. His knowledge of the local history has only amplified his appreciation for what he has and what he’s passing along.

wanted to do,” Gene said with pride knowing his son and grandson will reap the benefits of his labors – labors he loved so much he “just won’t quit.”

Cookie Exchange What rings in the holiday season better than baking cookies? Our family has been baking for years and these are some of our favorites. Perfect for a cookie exchange, an open house, or as a gift for the neighbor. Several are easy enough so little ones can help, and others can be made ahead and frozen.

Gingerbread Cookies • 3 cups flour • 1 Tablespoon ground ginger • 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon ground allspice • ½ teaspoon nutmeg • ½ teaspoon cloves • ¼ teaspoon salt • ⅔ cup unsalted butter, softened • ¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar • ⅔ cup molasses • 1 egg • 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla

DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, mix flour, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt. With an electric mixer, beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add molasses, egg, and vanilla and mix. Slowly add the flour and spice mixture until blended. Roll the dough into a thick, flat disk. Wrap in plastic wrap.

Refrigerate it for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Unwrap the dough and place on a lightly floured surface. With a rolling pin, roll out the dough to a desired thickness for cutting cookies out with the cookie cutter.

Bake cookies for 9-10 minutes, and cool for about 5 minutes. To “jazz,” decorate with icing, candies and sprinkles.

Peanut Butter Cookies • 1 egg • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup peanut butter

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine ingredients, and then form into balls. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for about 10-12 minutes. Perfect for little helpers!

Funfetti Cookies

(These freeze well and can be made ahead) • 1 box Funfetti cake mix • 2 eggs • ½ cup vegetable oil • Sprinkles, optional DIRECTIONS: Combine ingredients. Form into balls, dash with optional sprinkles. Lightly press sprinkles into the dough to help stick. Place on sprayed cookie sheet and chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for about 10-12 minutes.

Thumbprint Cookies (These freeze well and can be made ahead)

• 1 ¾ cup all-purpose flour • ½ tsp baking powder • ½ tsp. salt • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened • ½ cup sugar • 1 large egg • 1 tsp. almond or peppermint extract • 1/3 c. assorted jams, for cookie thumbprints DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350º. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy then beat in the egg and extract. Combine dry ingredients and thoroughly mix. Using a small spoon, scoop dough onto the baking sheet in about 1 inch balls. Press a thumbprint into the center of each ball about half deep into the dough. Fill with a small spoonful of your choice of various jams.

Bake for 12 to 14 minutes until lightly golden around the edges.

These freeze well.

Almond Butter Cookies • 1 egg • ⅔ cup brown sugar • 1 cup almond butter (smooth kind) • Chocolate Chips (optional)

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine ingredients.

If adding chocolate chips, fold in last. Form into balls. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for about 10-12 minutes.

Sugar Cookies

(These freeze well and can be made ahead) • ⅔ cup salted butter-room temperature softened • ⅓ cup sugar, plus one Tablespoon to sprinkle over the top • 1 cup all-purpose flour • Splash of vanilla and a dash of sprinkles (optional) DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine ingredients.

Form into balls. With your thumb, push a dip into the dough and add sprinkles or sugar. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for about 10-15 minutes.

FINDING UNDER THE BIG SKY Tenderhearted and compassionate, yet relentless and determined, Scott Miller loves getting to the heart of the matter, whether it’s a friend in turmoil, or a community in crisis. With Montana’s betterment in mind, his boundless energy allows him to work long hours, with little sleep, and put thousands of miles on his truck, better known as his “office,” as he traverses the state.

Scott is a highly decorated Army Command Sergeant Major, who served for 25 years before retiring to his hometown of Fromberg and settling on his ranch outside of Bridger with his wife Christine. The fourth generation Montanan is also a Carbon County commissioner. His patriotic, servicecentered heart is a product of a long line of patriots – his father served in Vietnam and his grandfather served in WWII. “It’s how I am,” Scott said. “I guess it’s in my blood, but it was modeled for me, especially by my grandfather, Herman Shanks.”

“If you don’t know your past, you don’t have a base to build your future,” Scott said. “Understanding that helped me become the leader I became in the Army.”

Herman had a profound impact on Scott as he embodied values, character and how to treat others.

“I saw how Grampa and a small group of his friends talked and cared for each other,” Scott said. “They were all Veterans. They were respected by others because of the respect they had for each other, and I was drawn to that.”

He believes that being disciplined and working hard grew out of his roots being raised on a ranch.

“The disciplined life of the military wasn’t hard for me to adapt to after having grown up ranching,” he said.

“I was used to getting up early and working hard all day. It fit me. It prepared me to do big things with my life.”

Scott climbed the military ranks and earned the respect of the men he led.

He believed, as he’d been taught, to earn respect, he must offer it.

“Every person in the military is someone’s child. I didn’t believe in destroying them or calling them names,” he said. “I called them what they are, and they became that.”

His leadership skills earned him the top rank of Sergeant Major, the highest non-commissioned office in the Army. Scott was chosen from the top 1 percent of 1 percent of the million in the military. He rose to the position, not because of his ranking, but because of his experience.

His tours of combat include Panama, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and Iraq, where he jumped out of airplanes, trekked across deserts, and spent 74 months in active combat duty, mostly in special forces.

Naturally, it took a toll on Scott and his family. While stationed in Panama, Scott met his wife who was also serving in the military. Christine resigned after they married and, as with many military wives, shouldered the responsibility of raising their three children. Following Scott from base to base, she and the kids were often left without him for months and even years on end.

“It’s hard on families for sure,” Scott said. “Most everyone in the military leaves with some amount of PTSD, it’s inevitable.

We’ve been trained in combat and when we return to civilian life, well, it’s hard.”

Scott dealt with PTSD. Before retiring, he joined an equine therapy program for veterans.

Because horses relate well to people, and it’s been scientifically proven a horse can mirror human emotions, they have been used successfully in the healing of individuals suffering from PTSD and other ailments. With time, the horse becomes a safe place and healing begins. And such was Scott’s experience.

“It changed who I was. I didn’t want to be Sergeant Major Miller, I just wanted to be Scott,” he said with tear-filled eyes. “In order to heal, you have to open up your wounds, but you have to have the tools to close them, too. I have no idea where I would be without equine therapy. I’d seen so much bad and hate. But I can honestly say, I haven’t been happier since.”

His therapy allowed him to leave trauma in the past and approach the future with positivity and hope.

“Life isn’t so bad,” he said. “We can get through it.”

With Scott’s determination, his region of the county saw roads, canals and bridges rebuilt within days and weeks of the flooding instead of months and years.

“We didn’t wait around for permits,” Scott said. “We got to work.

Scott’s plans are not certain after his county commissioner career, but with his servant’s heart, and his love of Montana and America, he’s sure to serve somewhere. One thing he is certain of is that his future holds rodeoing with the PRCA circuit.

Scott wears his emotions on his sleeve, but under his sleeves are reminders of his past. On his left arm are military tattoos and on his right are tattoos representing his faith. On his forearm is a cross inside a medallion designed after one he found in combat.

“I just want to smile and have fun,” he said. “Maybe do some steer wrestling. I love horses and people, so we’ll see. I don’t want to be 80 and look back wishing I would have done something that I didn’t do.”

Julie Rehbein pulled her pickup and horse trailer up to the corrals. Inside the trailer her horse, Nick, was accompanied by two others, Brooke and Razen. When she stopped, the truck’s doors flew open and out jumped the owners of the horses. As they began unloading, they excitedly chatted and greeted a fourth friend in the nearby corrals.

“We’ll help you Cherie,” one of them yelled to the woman in the corral. “Don’t you do a thing.”

“I’m not helpless,” she shot back. “I’m just moving a little slower.”

Four women, all love horses, and all love to ride. In addition to Julie, the cowgirls, ranging in age from 64 to 77, consist of Charlene Netzer, Kathy Wyman and Cherie Gatzke, and all live on ranches within five miles of each other. They love to ride so much they hire themselves out to area ranches when extra help is needed to gather and sort cattle.

Cherie, the one “moving a little slower,” was recovering from a shoulder dislocation and fracture that resulted from her horse stumbling on a mole hole and both went down. Her horse took off for the barn leaving Cherie to fashion a sling out of her shirt and walk the half mile home. Begrudgingly, she hadn’t ridden since, but she was determined to ride with her friends on this day, bum shoulder or not.

“We’ll help you,” her friends said.

And they did. Once they bridled their horses and tightened their cinches, they took over prepping Rio for Cherie to ride, all while chatting, bantering, and catching up with each other. When they were ready to ride, they led their horses to a slight incline in the landscape which aided them into their saddles.

“Some of us are a little on the short side,” Charlene laughed. “It helps when you’re our age to have a little boost.”

Their friendships were destined, two of the women married into a common family and two bonded over their daughters’ high school friendship, and all are longtime Sidney community pillars. Their lives are interwoven into a bond which has molded them into a fearsome four, unafraid to try nearly anything. Unofficially started by Cherie and Kathy, as near as they can remember, Charlene joined shortly afterwards and Julie about six years ago.

As it turned out, Julie’s cousin was looking for extra riders to help move cows and the four of them ended up together which established a long-term, unofficial partnership. It wasn’t long before they began earning a group reputation.

“The young riders used to snicker when we’d pull up,” Julie said. “‘Are we babysitting these gals, or what?’”

But the hushed comments have since ceased as the women have proven themselves to be excellent hands. They rope, gather, and push cows up the chute. They vaccinate during brandings and gather for shipping in the fall.

And, no matter what, they always finish the job.

“There’s really nothing we won’t do,” Cherie said. “We’ve fought rank bulls and obstinate cows.”

“We know how each other works and we work really well together,” Kathy added.

They work as a team, so when they are offered a job, the four decide together whether it’s a fit and they’re all available.

“We’re selective,” Charlene said. “We like to work together, so if one of us can’t do it, there’s a good chance we’ll turn it down.”

Let’s Party!

It helps if they are seeing new country or returning to a ranch where they previously enjoyed the work. All adept at pulling a trailer of horses, they rotate the driver duty as they head to each job. Once they commit to a task, even inclement weather won’t stop them. They’ve worked in 100-degree days and in freezing blizzards.

“We’re dependable, people can count on us, and we get the job done,” Cherie said.

“We can’t just ride when the sun shines. It doesn’t work that way. Most of our calls are, ‘how soon can you be here?’ so we know to dress for the weather.”

This comment sparked a trip down memory lane, and they recounted Cherie, bundled up on a rainy day, encased in a slicker trying to stay dry in a downpour. Unbeknownst to her, her slicker had made a funnel into her boots and when they finished, she got off her horse, and to the delight of her friends, poured two boots full of water out. Still laughing about it years later, it’s evident they share more than work, but a close friendship as well.

“We’re in each other’s lives,” they said.

Birthday parties, get-togethers and other social affairs bring them together, but riding is their passion. That’s clear, considering the financial feasibility of their business.

“Well,” they admitted, “most of the time, we help out just because we love to ride.”

Between laughter, they offered their best guess as to how long the business would remain.

“I figure another 20 years,” Julie said. “By then I’ll be almost 100, so that’s a good time to quit.”

“I dread the day they say I can’t get on a horse,” Kathy added.

“People have said to us, ‘it’s too dangerous for your ages, don’t you think it’s time to get rid of your horses?’ To them we say, ‘we’re not going to give up on our dreams just because of our age.’ No one should.”

The ranch women find adventure where they can, and a few enjoy hunting as well. Cherie’s shoulder was healed enough to enjoy a goat hunt arranged earlier this fall. Charlene planned an annual elk hunt with her husband and Kathy and her husband both had elk tags to fill. The hunts had to fit around fall cattle work, though.

As shipping started and ranchers began gathering pairs, the four filled their schedules, ready and eager to saddle their horses and help out.

At the end of each workday, the tired but happy women return to the barn to unsaddle and load their horses. As they trail across the pasture, as is their custom, Julie’s voice starts out and is soon joined by the others as they sing an old favorite.

“Whoop-pi-ti-yi-yo. Rockin to and fro. Back in the saddle again…”

IN A LIFE WELL LED “I believe my calling right now is to serve on a greater level,” Judy Wagner said. “I love investing in others.”

Judy was thoughtful as she gazed out the picture window from her favorite living room chair. Outside in the front pasture, a young colt unabandoned around his mother.

“Can you believe I get to watch this every morning?” she said with a smile.

As the Chief Marketing Officer of Montana Silversmiths, Judy’s days are full. For over two decades she has left the sanctuary of her home, family, and horses outside of Park City to work at the prestigious Columbus, Montana company. Starting in marketing in 2000, she’s forged partnerships with PRCA, PBR and the NFR and has been instrumental in implementing programs, developing brands, and representing the company at rodeos, banquets, and trade shows across the nation.

A classy woman, she’s adorned with Montana Silversmiths jewelry and dresses to the nines, from her signature felt cowboy hat down to her polished boots. She’s an icon in the western lifestyle industry and rightfully so, she’s passionate about it.

Judy’s resume is impressive and includes foundational work on young adult programs like Cowgirl’s 30 Under 30 and The Pursuit of Excellence. She has spoken before crowds at Miss Rodeo America and Art of the Cowgirl, among others. She’s ambitious, sincere and cares deeply for others. But there’s more to the face of Montana Silversmiths than meets the eye.

Behind it all, Judy is a wife, mother, grandmother, and mentor. She

cherishes people, horses, quiet moments, laughter, and family time, especially with her two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter, Westee. She treasures holding deep conversations, taking in the view from her deck, and roping with her husband of 47 years, Alvin.

“I feel the need to do more personally at this time in my life,” Judy said. “The older I get the more I realize that we (as a society) are missing connection. We don’t spend time with people. Technology is important, but face to face conversations with people is something I’d like to get back to.”

Judy grew up in Avon, Montana, the oldest of eight. Her father died tragically in a farming accident when she was just 16.

“We grew up fast,” she said of those early years.

But it was because of her ranch life experience, she developed what she likes to call “ranch grown logic.” To her, it’s a commonsense approach to enhancing value by simply doing what needs to be done.

“You just do what it takes,” she said. “On a ranch, the cows don’t know it’s Christmas, but they still need to be fed. That’s the case in business. You do what it takes.”

Before her Montana Silversmiths career, Judy owned and operated Gator Ropes for 12 years, a company she bought and rebranded. A natural marketer, her innovation brought many milestones to the company. It was the first in the industry to identify the hardness of ropes for consumers using a color-coded gator. Gator Ropes also became the first official rope of the PRCA

and the first to focus on a niche market of ropers – youth.

“Owning Gator Ropes taught me so much,” she said. “I made some mistakes, but I sure learned about business. From production design to payroll, I had to learn it to succeed.”

Owning her company also taught her the value of enjoying her customers. She coined the term “gatorizing,” or having fun with something and she did. When she and Alvin pulled up to a trade show with their merchandise trailer, people flocked to it.

“It’s not really what they were buying, but the way that it made them feel,” Judy explained.

While Judy is proud of the products Montana Silversmiths develops and the programs and partnerships they’ve established, it’s the people she’s met who have shaped her into who she is and helped her determine what she wants to do, as she says, “when I grow up.”

“Just as I like to say, ‘every story has a buckle,’ and so does every person. People are hungry to share and be heard and feel like they matter. That sparks something inside of me,” she said.

Just as the branding of Montana Silversmiths’ has been critical for the company, Judy believes each individual has a ‘brand’ as well.

“I want to be part of bringing women living the western lifestyle together and help them where I can,” she said. “Sometimes the smallest things can give us just what we need to take the next step. We are stronger together. The strong ties that we create in our lives support mentorships, collaborations, and a powerful sisterhood.”

Judy was suddenly interrupted in her story when the front door opened, and her husband and granddaughter stepped in as wide smiles consumed Judy and Westee’s faces.

“That little one,” Judy smiled. “She fills something in me that I can’t even explain.”

“I’m ready to take a second breath and get going,” Judy said.

“There’s still a lot to do.”

“I’m transitioning into a new phase,” she said with a smile. “I’ll still be riding for the brand, I’ll just be riding with a loose rein.”

Surrounded by family, grounded in her faith, and determined to continue to make a difference in the lives of the people in her circle, it will be some time before Judy takes off her boots and rests for any length of time.

This yearning will mark the start of a new role for Judy as Montana Silversmiths’ Brand Advocate. At 70, Judy looks forward to transitioning from a full time schedule, having more family time and pursing her desire to mentor.

Westee’s parents, Ross and his wife Casey, live on the same property as Judy and Alvin and raise performance horses.

Their daughter Tiffany, lives in Arizona where Judy and Alvin enjoy escaping to in the dead of winter.

DuWayne Wilson’s hands are calloused, and his grip firm when he shakes hands, both indicative of a hard-working outdoorsman.

Along with his wife, Carrie, the third-generation Montanan farms and ranches outside of Scobey. Except for college and his first teaching job, DuWayne has lived his entire life in the area and he and Carrie raised three boys on the ranch.

“It was hard,” Carrie said. “DuWayne was hospitalized for three months, and I was back and forth, but we took every day as it came. You just do what you have to do and keep moving forward.”

DuWayne and Carrie are a strong couple, grounded by faith, loved and admired in their close-knit community, and respected and cherished by their boys and families. They are the kind of neighbors everyone wants; generous, kind, helpful, and always encouraging.

Seven years ago, they became the grateful recipients of those same character traits. While working his team of mules, DuWayne was thrown from a wagon landing on his head. He suffered a spinal cord injury which left him paralyzed from the chest down.

“I remember thinking, shortly after I was hurt, what’s going to happen to the place and to my family? How’s Carrie going to manage? Will I ever be able to do anything again?” DuWayne recalled.

He was flown from Scobey to Billings, then to Denver where he had surgery to stabilize his spine before enduring three months of rehabilitation to build the strength required to return home. At Denver’s Craig Hospital, DuWayne’s determination allowed for a release far sooner than expected.

The first spring after his accident, neighbors rallied to plant his

“Faith may move mountains, but you better wear your work boots and carry a shovel,” DuWayne said.

That hard-working, hopeful attitude serves him today and his disability doesn’t hold him back. DuWayne has full motion in his arms and shoulders, though he does suffer from periodic numbness in one arm. His upper body strength, built through his lifestyle before the injury, has allowed him to use a variety of adaptive equipment and continue his involvement on the ranch and in the community.

His career as an ag teacher began in Sheridan, Montana, where he taught for eight years. Returning to his roots, the next 17 years were spent teaching in Wolf Point with a 63-mile commute to and from the ranch each day. Carrie worked at Nemont for 29 years and both are now fully retired from their “town careers.”

Carrie occupies her time with grandchildren, a massive garden, and quilting projects for friends and family while DuWayne stays active helping his son in the day-to-day operation of farming and

has driven across the state by himself. The driver’s seat of the ranch pickup is mobile to assist getting in and there is a lift on the pickup bed which allows him to climb on the seat of a tractor and his swather. The lift saves him from pulling himself into vehicles using just his upper body.

“I’ve even changed a diaper or two,” he said with a smile.

“He doesn’t let much stop him,” Carrie said. “Sometimes I wish he would.”

“My arms and shoulders have become my legs, and they weren’t designed to be that, so I have to really take care of them and make sure I don’t do damage,” he said. “But if you don’t push yourself, you’re never going to know what you can do.”

Christmas lights. DuWayne’s positivity is recognized statewide as he’s become a mentor to other disabled people in the agricultural industry.

The Montana-based Cutting Fences Foundation has connected with DuWayne several times, both to assist him and to tap into his expertise to help others. DuWayne was the first podcast guest when the nonprofit launched two years ago, and the Foundation assisted him in choosing and purchasing the best adaptive equipment for his needs. He recently borrowed Cutting Fences’ Freedom Trax unit, a unique piece of equipment on which a wheelchair is mounted on tracks, enabling one to traverse rough terrain.

“Everybody faces adversity,” DuWayne said.

“Adversity is a challenge, but you don’t have to let it defeat you. I believe I am uniquely qualified to live my life as a paraplegic and that I was being prepared for this my entire life.”

“He’s never been mad that it happened to him,” Carrie added. “He’s accepted that this

They credit their adaptability to their faith, DuWayne’s physical strength, and their supportive family and community.

Two years ago, DuWayne and Carrie built a home just down the road from the ranch headquarters where their son, Chance and his family now live.

The new construction was designed by Carrie with DuWayne’s needs in mind.

“After living in our old home with DuWayne’s disability, I knew what was needed to make life easier for both of us,” she explained.

Their new home is one level and includes wide hallways, a bathroom specifically designed for DuWayne, a ramp to the back door, and lower kitchen countertops with the microwave and coffee maker at waist level. Pocket doors throughout maximize the floor space and the bare wood floors allow for ease of mobility.

Large windows and a covered deck offer a view of the valley and stunning sunsets.

Having both graduated from Montana State University, DuWayne and Carrie are avid Cat fans. They rarely miss a home Bobcat football game, and enjoy pre-game tailgating with friends and an occasional night away from home.

“I don’t know what I’d do without Carrie,” DuWayne said. “She’s amazing. As hard as this has been for me, I think it’s been harder for her. She’s a saint for being beside me through all of this.”

Though the dynamics of DuWayne and Carrie’s life have drastically changed, their resolve to face the future with positivity and faith in God has given them the strength to push on with grateful hearts.

“It’s not what we don’t have, it’s what we do have,” Carrie concluded. “We’re blessed with community, family and friends and God takes care of us.”

As Tom Maddingly recounts his early years, visions of a life a century ago emerge. On the ranch where he and his family lived, work was done by horses, there was no telephone, television, or mobile radio for communicating and there were certainly no cell phones. The days started before dawn and often ended after dark.

But it was in this lifestyle Tom thrived, evidenced by the light in his eyes as he recalls fond memories.

In a small town in central Illinois, Tom’s childhood days were filled with carefree play with his best friend, a little blond girl several years younger than him. Growing up together, the two became sweethearts as they reached their teens.

in 1970. On one of his leaves, he returned home to marry his lifelong sweetheart, Diane, and they spent the next 46 years together.

After his service, when he resettled in Illinois, he had $1,500 for a down payment on a home. The couple found one for $23,000 and it was there they started a family. Tom was working in a plant manufacturing underground cable, but Diane knew he longed for something different.

At 18, Tom had finished three semesters of college while his buddy was serving in Vietnam. Upon his return, he planned to go to school on the GI Bill.

As fate would have it, she saw an ad in the Western Horseman Magazine seeking cowhands on the Padlock Ranch in Dayton, Wyoming, and encouraged Tom to apply. With no ranching experience, Tom presumes it was his shared military background with the manager which landed him the job. Whatever the case, Tom began a “Cowboying Career” that lasted for the next 40 years.

“He was killed two weeks before he came home,” Tom said. “It really tore me up.”

“I have initials behind my name,” Tom laughed. “DAC: Dumb Ass Cowboy. I’ve earned it over the years too.”

So, Tom packed his things, quit school, and on the way home he stopped at the recruitment office. When Tom was just 11, his father passed, so he knew his mother wouldn’t be happy about his decision to enlist.

In the late 70s, the Padlock Ranch encompassed 500,000 acres and ran 15,000 cows. It extended from Hardin, Montana to Sheridan, Wyoming, and included leased land on the Crow Indian Reservation.

“I couldn’t join the Army without my mother’s signature,” he explained. “When I showed her the papers, she wouldn’t sign them. I worked on her for a month before she finally agreed.”

“I brought my family by U-Haul from Illinois to Wyoming and started working for $500 a month,” Tom said. “I worked hard every day, but you know, I loved what I did. I couldn’t wait to get up and go to work.”

FEEDING LIVESTOCK ON THE PADLOCK RANCH

The Padlock Ranch worked cattle only on horseback and when Tom was promoted to head one of the many “cow camps,” he spent most days riding as he checked cattle health and the condition of the grass, water and fences. In the winter, feeding hay started at 7:00 in the morning, when Tom backed a horse-drawn wagon into the hay corral and used a cable and pulley system to load the 4x4 bales. The work was strenuous and to feed the 500 cows he was responsible for took the better part of the day – every day.

Tom didn’t mind the long days, nor did he mind spending the month of June riding vast pastures on the ranch with a crew to gather pairs and brand calves. The men slept on the ground under tents and ate meals prepared on a propane stove in the cook tent.

“We were lucky to get a shower on the weekends. That is if we went home. Otherwise, it got a little ripe around there,” Tom said with a laugh. “Still, we had three meals a day; 4:00, noon, and 6:00. Our cook was a heck of a guy, he’d be up at 2:00 a.m. making coffee and getting things done.”

The men were tough. Work was expected in the heat of summer and the dead of winter. One winter, Tom remembered the mercury being so low on the thermometer that it wouldn’t rise out of the bubble.

“It was stuck at -40,” he recalled.

His lifestyle was remote, and he liked it that way. With no phones or radios, communication occurred only face to face.

“I had no one looking over my shoulder,” he said. “It was hard work, but very satisfying. I never owned a single cow, but they all felt like mine.”

The 20 years spent at the Padlock Ranch allowed Tom and his family a lifestyle they all enjoyed. Diane worked as a counselor at the high school in Hardin, 60 miles away and around their school schedule, his kids grew up helping out. After two decades, with the kids grown, Tom and Diane moved to several other ranches before she passed away in 2012.

His two sons and his daughter keep him grounded today, each taking responsibility in his life.

“All three are in the medical field, I don’t recommend it,” Tom joked. “They just look for ways to keep me alive. ‘Don’t eat that.

Still, it’s evident in his voice the pride he has for each of them.

Today, Tom works as an office manager for Frontier Productions in Big Timber, Montana. He answers the phone, ensures the television works when cattle video auctions are broadcast, and keeps the coffee pot filled. He’s also the scale master at the local stock yard and helps a neighbor feed his horses.

‘Tom’s office’ has become somewhat of a hangout for local old timers who don’t mind his coffee and enjoy “shooting the breeze.”

Every day the chairs around his desk are filled and Tom holds court.

“I have no regrets,” Tom said. “Even when times have been tough, I couldn’t quit. No, I don’t have a single complaint about my life.”
