Hole first met photographer Chris Haylett when she hired him to shoot model tests at Charles Stuart. They eventually left to open their own photography studio with stylist/ interior designer Fernando Attunes.

She did everything imaginable those first few years, but the time came when she had to make a decision about her future. “I received the best advice ever from Fernando.

He asked me what I loved to do the best and my answer was to be the best make-up artist. His response was life-changing. ‘You can't be the best make-up artist if you're doing everything.' I took his advice, cancelled all my other jobs and concentrated on being the best makeup artist I could be. That's when my career began to take off.”

BY: MARILYN R. WILSON Destiny played a strong hand in the journey of agent, producer, and make-up artist Gina Hole. From as early as she can remember fashion has been a part of her life, and what a life. “I've been through the 70's, the 80's, the 90's and now it's all coming full circle.” Entirely self taught, she has been a force in the business for 30 years and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

By the age of 10 this talented artist was busy with her sisters and friends – styling, coordinating outfits and applying make-up. At the age of 15 when most of us are hanging out, she had already landed a job with the hottest local shoe store where she quickly had her hand in every aspect of the business. She not only worked in the store, but helped with fashion shows, modelled for store ads and did hair and make-up for both. Working with professionals such as Tracey Pincott and Carol Leflufy helped to hone her skills. What followed were industry jobs with model agencies John Casablanca and Charles Stuart. Make-up, test shoots, fashion show coordination, teaching, and booking agent were all in her job description.

She left Vancouver to work in Toronto's busy fashion industry.

Then in 1989 Hole headed to Los Angeles where she signed with the Celestine Agency, who rep’d the best artists in LA. “This was the pinnacle of my career. It is also where I learned how the best of the best are rep'd – how it's done right. I worked with celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. and was a personal make-up artist for

soap star Kristian Alfonso.” Then the Gulf War broke out and the work dried up. “Inspired and encouraged

by Angelica Schubert, the owner of Celestine, I decided to return to Vancouver and open an agency. It had never been done here.” It would be 14 years before her agency – THEY Representation – became a reality. During that time she saw the birth of 3 children and a marriage to husband & movie effects coordinator Tony Lazarowich. Her career thrived working in film, commercials, videos, celebrities shoots and fashion photography. Positive pressure from the local artists began to mount for her to take that step of faith and in 2004 she was ready to open her agency.

It all began in a penthouse hotel suite where artists were invited to show Hole their portfolio. She particularly remembers her first meeting with stylist Leila Bani. “I discussed with her, as I did with all the artists, about what it meant to be signed and asked her to go home and consider it carefully before she decided. I laughed when I later received her email saying, ‘I don’t have to think about it, I’m yours!’ ” The easy part was the agent/business side as she not only had the contacts, but a knack for branding and negotiation. She also had a gift for spotting new talent.

“Even when I was working all those

years as a make-up artist I could tell who had potential right from their first shoot.” What was difficult was her complete lack of computer skills.

“When I started the business I didn't know how to cut and paste, so I hired an expert and said ‘start with the on button!’. Five years later I've become a real pro, even redesigning my website.” Her current slate of artists include photographers, make-up artists, fashion stylists, manicurists, prop and set decorators who, despite the recession, are receiving media attention and high-profile bookings.

Photographer Dexter Quinto is shooting the next ad campaign for Jane Iredale Cosmetics out of Boston, photographer David Ellingsen was chosen to shoot all the large-scale action photographs set to grace BC Place’s Concourse for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, B.C., and stylist Leila Bani is featured in this September’s Flare Magazine, sharing her advice on ‘what’s stylishly hot’.

After 5 years in the business Gina Hole still loves her work. “Finding talent - it's been a thrill for me.

Before I could spot the talent but didn't have the platform to do anything about it. Now I have my own platform.” Looking to the future, she is working toward opening the first high-end photography rental studio in Vancouver along the lines of Smashbox studios in Los Angeles.

In the mean time she is kept busy producing for her talented and busy roster, but you can be sure she also still has her eyes open for new talent.

JAMAICA Discover the South Coast

To a traveler’s delight, Jamaica is a unique island for its many countryside towns, versatile beaches, rich cultural cities, and its amazingly tasty food. One can never get tired of visiting because there are so many options of how to shape one’s experience during each trip. Most visitors don’t realize that they can get a very different viewpoint of Jamaica based solely on the selected accommodations, the coast in where one’s staying or the historical and native sites that are seen.

When most people think of a place to visit on this culturally rich island, it’s usually the golf courses in Montego Bay, beautiful Dunns River Falls in Ocho Rios, or the famous cliffside restaurant in Negril.

Our editor’s decided to take a different route, and visit the South Coast of Jamaica.

It’s still relatively untouched by tourism and hotels, rich in street side fruit stands and a place where one can get the tastiest prepared fish, caught fresh that day.

The sands of the beaches are white and soft to the touch, the surrounding lush hillsides create a stunning backdrop to the tree-lined beaches and the shoreline is one that every visitor should view and experience in person.

A stay on the South Coast will not disappoint the faithful traveler. There are many small towns to visit and local places to dine for a true one of a kind experience.

Pick the Right Networks For You

Sites like Facebook and Twitter are a given no matter your interests or profession. But when you start to explore specialty networks make sure they speak to your profession or way of life. For instance, TheTalentXchange. com is a social networking site for the entertainment industry. Models, singers, actors and producers choose this network, because it speaks issues relevant to their industry. However, if you make wedding cakes you may want to join BakeSpace.com.

Karma is Key

Your third grade crush (you pulled her hair every day) is a non-profit Executive Director who needs a pro-bono accountant. You being the king of accounting connect with her and devote 3 hours to helping them with a tax return glitch. Sure it gives you a warm feeling to volunteer. But down the line it can lead to professional advancement. At the end of the day it strengthened your ties to the Executive Director, put you on the radar with her Board of Directors and showed your superior accounting skills. In the social networking world, Karma is alive and well. When you help a friend out expect it to come back to you, even if it is just a thank you in their status.

Self Promotion is Good

Where in other parts of your life self promotion can be seen as being pompous, the Social Networking world is entirely based on telling the world about yourself. Your Friends want to see what you are up to personally and professionally. They are also looking for professional opportunities that they can take part in. So don’t be shy!

If you are having an event, send out an invite. If your business has a write up in the local paper, update your status. If you are selling your house, Tweet it!

Your Profile Leaves a Lasting Impression

This is the most important tip. Recently a friend of mine showed me the 3rd page of the New York Post.

An employee had made opinionated comments on her Facebook page and was let go. Though her comments were her personal thoughts and may have been the opinion of other people who were her Facebook Friends, they were in blatant opposition to the values of her employer.

With most people having 200+ friends, what you write on your profile or wall can easily spread like wildfire. In a cyber second it can be shared with 200 of your friends friends and before you know it you are on the 3rd page of the New York Post. I may be over exaggerating, but I suggest you only make positive posts to your profile.

Never air dirty laundry and remember that after pushing the button your grandmother in Iowa may be reading about your debauchery last night.

Sponsorships are not dead! But they are not the free for all that they once were. To get sponsorships for your events or businesses you must think more strategically than ever before. Here are some tips when looking for a company to Finance Your Dream.

Find Your To-Do List Style

With the plethora of Blackberries and iPhones we all can pick and choose what tools we use to manage our time. After utilizing my outlook and syncing it to my blackberry then uploading it to my family Gmail calendar, I decided that I like a good old fashion paper date planner (I use recyclable paper). However, others I know cannot live without their super phones to manage their days Whatever your tool of choice may be, make sure it fits into your lifestyle and make sure you utilize it daily.

Create Your To-Do List the Night Before

After you have returned your last phone call and answered your last email, take 15 min to organize for the next day. The morning is the worst time to create a to-do list. You are in the middle of multi-tasking voicemails, emails and in person requests. If your to-do list is the last part of your day you have a clearer mind to prioritize and are able to look at the big picture, rather than the brightest burning flame.

If it Takes Less Than 2 Minutes, Do it Right Away

Limit your “to-dos” by doing! If someone puts an invoice on your desk, sign it! Or if you get an email asking a quick question, answer it! Getting them out of the way gives you the sense of accomplishment while not breaking your work flow on bigger projects.

Limit Your List to the Top 5 Things You Need to Accomplish

Prioritization is key. When your list is too long it will seem daunting and insurmountable. By limiting your list to the top five tasks you are less likely to get discouraged.

Reward Yourself

Whether it is taking a walk for or indulging in your favorite blog. When you complete your list, take time to reward yourself mentally with some “me time”. Make sure your reward is solely for you and not work related.

Sponsors want new revenue streams and verticals. You must make sure that you research what their marketing goals are and decipher if your target demographic aligns with those goals. If you are selling to women in their 30’s a wine sponsor might seem appropriate. But after some research you might see that wineries have a lock on the 30something demographic and are trying to target 20something age group while Energy Drinks are targeting your demographic as a new emerging market.

In these rough economic times all sponsors are looking to make partnerships that raise their “Return on Investment”. Create a way for them to quantify their sponsorship; whether it will be tracking people who sign up for their services or buy their products or translate the outcome into dollar amounts. The name of the game is giving them hard numbers to back their dollars.

Who is the New Kid on the Block?

Everyone wants a sponsorship from Coke or Xbox. But do they want you? After you identify the industries that you want to target look for a company that is about to launch a product or a company that is trying to move up the industry ladder. They will be more apt to spend money to capture their target audience through sponsorships.

Keep it Close

Who are the companies that you currently work with or buy products from? If you utilize a specific vendor for all of your materials or sell your product at a specific chain of stores go to them first. You have a relationship with them where they will be able use your track record as a rationale for sponsoring your endeavor.

A Collection that has its roots in menswear and boldly colored psychedelic printed t-shirts is continuing to make a splash around the world. A high-end fashion brand based in Barcelona Spain, Custo Barcelona is a favorite among the Hollywood set. The brand is primarily sold internationally with five store locations in the US. Custo Barcelona is the brainchild of brothers Custo and David Dalmau who started their design careers in the 1980’s. In 1996, after a trip to the California coast, the design duo was inspired by the surfer lifestyle and the psychedelic prints they wore. They decided to introduce much needed color in the market, which at the time was very heavily influenced by minimalism. Their first show in 1997 during NY Fashion Week was a huge success!

Their collection has grown from printed t-shirts to over 3000 items being sold at retail around the world.

Their brand boasts everything from dresses, to hooded sweatshirts, to scarves, sunglasses, and even bikinis.

The fashion community has also recognized Custo Barcelona with awards from both Marie Clair and GQ Magazine. Custo Barcelona is quickly becoming one of fashion’s megabrands.

Enrique is from Cadiz, Spain and studied industrial engineering in school. He initially put his professional career on hold to participate in the Mister Spain 1997 modelling contest and won! That is how his modelling career began. The next year in 1998, he remained as one of the finalists in the Mister World Contest and moved to live to Milan.

In January of 1998 he did his first fashion show in the Uomo Collezioni in Milan, for the most prestigious runway shows of the world for six consecutive seasons. This helped him make a name for himself with designers such as Ermenegildo Zegna, Giorgio Armani, Gianfranco Ferré, and Luciano Soprani. He also walked the Paris runways for designers such as Kenzo, Udo Edling, and Smalto.

His international path opened many doors for him including going to Barcelona in 1999 where he worked during 5 consecutive seasons for companies such as Candy, Hanibal Laguna or Konrad Muhr; and in Cibeles (Madrid) where his appearance were continuous for 10 seasons with designers such as Philip Beach Her, Pedro Morago, Devout and Lomba, and Francis Montesinos.

In 2000, he began studying literature and in 20032004 began his acting career. He currently acts in theatre and produces plays with one of the greats in theatre in Spain. He is truly a versatile creative entrepreneur!

ENRIQUE MIRNDA What makes him unique?

Enrique believes that the key to work is precisely to find a style that differentiates you among the great competition that exists between the models on the whole international market. He has always tried to be a complete and flexible professional.

“I have been lucky to been able to experience every area of the industry. I have worked in runway, editorial, and advertising”, states Enrique. He has been fortunate to have representation in all the top cities in the fashion world. Finally, he always conducts himself in a professional manner and easily adapts himself to any market he encounters.

Which are his long-term goals?

Enrique desires to maintain the family tradition and continue to work in theatre. He works with one of the most celebrated playwrights and producers in Spain. He contributes very timely and relevant productions to the public and also works with modelling agencies when they are seeking new faces and models.

She was born is Seville, Spain, in 1985. Her professional career as a model started with the agency Doble Erre in Seville. After a short training period, an international agency called “Agencia de Moda Internacional Group Model Management” established in Madrid & Barcelona was really interested in her. She moved to Barcelona and she started working with the most important photographers of the moment: Juan Aldabaldetrecu, Mario Sierra, and Outumuro. She has graced the front cover of Men’s Health Magazine, as well as been in other editorials in such publications as Gala, Mujer Hoy, Vogue Spain and El Magazine from the national newspaper El Mundo.

She has also been a frequent face in Designer shows during the past 5 years with such designers as Victorio & Luchino, Vicky Martin Berrocal, Juana Martín, Angel Schlesser (Cibeles Madrid), etc.

Nowadays, Isabel spends most of her time in her studies. Her goal is to become a dentist. Although, currently a student, she is still active in the fashion world and travels currently to Madrid and Barcelona to attend personal commitments.

ISABEL JIMENEZ What makes her unique?

One of Isabel’s strong points, is that she is 5’9” and has an amazingly strong walk on the runway. In Spain, it is difficult to find models of that height, that are not only photogenic but can really walk to show the clothes in their best light. This is what makes Isabel stand out from her peers.

Which are her long-term goals?

Isabel is currently concentrating on her dental career. Although, she still has the desire to find a designer who drives her to the top and can help her triumph in the fashion world. She is still young and plans to continue working as model for a few more years. “I will not refuse an opportunity to collaborate in the different aspects of the fashion industry,” states Isabel.

A NEW TWIST ON AN OLD CLASSIC

Unearthing local artistic talent, finding a way to help them produce income from their work and creating a social program that affects both the quality of life and self-esteem for those involved is a tall order. EWMA (Enterprising Women Making Art) has taken on the challenge. The program’s focus is women who are marginalized providing free training and opportunity. Funded totally by private donations (95% is raised through the parent organization – Atira Women’s Resource Society), it is fast developing into a success story that could provide a model for others to build on.

The original program was developed in 2003 by Janice Abbott, executive director of Atira. This non-profit organization is committed to ending violence against women and children as well as providing necessary supportive housing. Abbott noticed many of the residents had artistic talent, but were selling their wares wherever they could for a fraction of the value. It was heartbreaking. She decided, “These women aren’t likely to get nine to five jobs, so let’s find them an alternative.”

The original concept was a co-op, providing a viable business and a sense of ownership. A year ago Abbott decided EWMA needed a new direction and brought in Mariana Garcia as coordinator to develop the business and run the program.

Garcia began with just three women, a small space and one volunteer teacher – textile artist Katherine Soucie.

Over the coming 12 months the program blossomed to include a fashionable boutique, 30 participants and many new artist/teachers such as Laura Harrison (pottery) and Vivian Bomberry (jewelry/fabric). Partnerships developed quickly with artists, designers, galleries, universities, local businesses, corporations and community groups. They provide needed support, supplies, interns and teachers.

One recent challenge was where to house the EWMA store. Abbott was able to create this space in one of the Atira apartment buildings. The ground floor was zoned for retail use. After long negotiations with the city, she was able to partition off the back for a community kitchen and utilize the street frontage as a boutique for EWMA. Situated in a once thriving part of town, the warm ambiance was created by dysarchitecture, one of many businesses who support Atira’s programs.

EWMA’s goals are clear – empower the artists, improve their socio-economic conditions, showcase the strengths and capabilities of women who are marginalized, increase their self-sufficiency and create opportunities for this diverse group to work together. Participants are active in the design, planning, marketing and production of their products. Handmade items include semi-precious jewelry, hand knit garments, cards, paper arts, ceramics, fine arts photography, and textiles. For coordinator Garcia, “The program is life changing. It’s more than a social program.

I’m trying to increase sales and improve products so it’s sustainable.” With a background in business, she is well-equipped to guide them.

Katherine Soucie has been involved as a mentor and donor since Garcia was hired last year. With her studio space located in the low-income area of town, Soucie felt drawn to give back to the community where she lived and worked. “When I first became involved with EWMA, I knew it was a perfect group for me to work with. They are a small, unique program helping to create opportunities and encourage women in transition to start producing and selling their products. It allows these women to develop their confidence, be a part of a community and to create an income for themselves.

What I get back is a deep gratitude and appreciation for what I do. All my education and training has brought me here. In turn it allows me to learn something new.”

Garcia is always looking for new opportunities. She established a co-op program in January 2009 with the Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Their first intern, Leah Vlemmiks, created the website, artisan head shots and product photography. SIFE, a student organization at the BC Institute of Technology, recently became a partner through the work of supporter Kemp Edmonds.

These students strive to strengthen the community by teaching business skills and ethics to aspiring entrepreneurs and have helped with several events. To promote the gallery Garcia just launched an event called East Fridays. A rotating group of local artists, designers and musicians are invited in every 2nd Friday to perform and to sell their work. It is a creative way to bring in the general public and will also function as a fundraiser proceeds from the evening’s sales are donated to EWMA. In 12 short months this privately funded program has grown exponentially, providing support and training to its participants and an example for other organizations.

On the scene for only seven seasons, designers Raymond Boutet and Lyle Reimer definitely stand out from the crowd. The driving force behind the Evan & Dean label have chosen a different path from other designers, striving to be at the forefront of future trends and changing directions each season. No cookie cutter, easy-to-market garments for these talented artists. Their loyal clientèle want something fresh. Whether you love a given collection or not, you can always depend on being surprised.

They are the first designers I try to check out each season to see what’s new in fabric and silhouettes.

An Evan & Dean collection is like fine wine. The inspiration, fabric choice and silhouettes for a given season are always recognizable - you can easily say, “That’s Evan & Dean, Spring ‘07”. Over the course of the last few years they used such inspirations as a Lucy episode where she infiltrated a men’s club (a collection that explored a more masculine look for women’s wear), the insect world (unusual details such as a collar placed at the hem of a skirt where a kick pleat would go), “Refined “Kitsch (exploring the use of kitschy elements in a more elegant way) and “Future Folk” (a combination of folk arts and future technology). Boutet and Reimer also manage to include an unusual fabric each season. For F/W ‘08 it was a textured piece they called “Featheresque” which became a hot runway item the following spring. The current season includes two: Leno Weave (a fabric where the treads are twisted instead of woven) and a textured pile fabric with fringe.

Life partners as well as business partners, you will find them two very different individuals. Boutet comes from a strong science background and works in the medical profession.

He is the one who studied the technical side of fashion design and drafts all the patterns. You will see his influence in the incredibly detailed architectural elements so prevalent in this line. Reimer is more artistic by nature and works professionally as a make-up artist. His touch is evident in the details of the collection such as color, fabric selection, proportions and finishing. Coming from such different ends of the spectrum one would expect confusion, but their talents combine beautifully to create something strong, unique and entirely their own.

F/W ‘09 finds its inspiration in the Elegant Warrior.

“Through history women have been the elegant warrior.

In today’s world women are looking for their new armor. This collection provides that; a testament to strong women everywhere....women that are capable of surmounting great odds.” Intelligent, intricate and with beautiful proportions, this is one of their strongest collections to date. Silhouettes are powerful and dramatic. The masculine palate of bronze, navy and black is softened by a feminine ochre and rose-quartz.

There are some unique details. The Samsi skirt and dress are constructed by pleating one large piece of fabric into beautiful “vee” shape diagonals – very difficult and labor intensive. Drapery style pleating is used on the sleeves of the Berengaria jacket and the unusual armor shape of the sleeves on the Thyra jacket is balanced with an exclusive mirrored trim. This 38-piece collection has a wide range of looks from smooth and refined to detailed and textured and includes a great selection of coats, dresses and separates. One has the choice to portray subtle hints of the “Elegant Warrior” or to go with a more bold, couture statement. For Boutet, he is most proud of the jackets. “If I had to pick one I am particularly happy with it would be the Domina Fencing Jacket. I love the cut of our jackets now. It took me 4 years to develop this fit.”

Although their business is still growing despite the recession, Boutet and Reimer feel fortunate to still have day jobs. “The business is getting to the point where it’s supporting itself, but we still have to work to support ourselves.” When asked their advice for new designers, the answer was clear, “Have lots of money because it takes a lot”. Although fashion shows were admittedly a great way to get their name out in the past, they have decided to take a break while they focus on business development.

This includes attending New York trade shows and looking for possible investors. For now the main focus is on the upcoming release of S/S ‘10. There are photo shoots to complete, trade shows to attend, media to woo and a growing list of retailers to take care of. What will the next season look like? A surprise as always, but well worth the wait.

Sisters Katie and Millie Smith began with a simple goal: to create an international accessories collection that would not only make its mark on fashion with their innovative use of classic silhouettes and an eclectic aesthetic, but by proving that this unique collection could be produced in an environmentally and ethically responsible manner.

In 2005, Katie and Millie Smith launched Angel Jackson, a collection of high-end clutches, purses, belts and totes made from sustainable, ethically sourced materials, produced in factories that maintain strict working conditions and standards.

Angel Jackson’s style and substance’ recipe for success is carefully implemented by the sisters’ hands on approach - Millie is based in Bali, overseeing all aspects of the collections production and distribution, while Katie handles wholesale and marketing in the UK. The Smith sisters have also taken advantage of their Bali based office to gain additional exposure and access to buyers for the Asian market, establishing a strong presence at major trade shows as well as opening a stunning new showroom that double as an art space featuring up and coming graffiti artists.

Over the past four years this designing sister duo has taken Angel Jackson from one of fashion’s best kept secret start ups to frequenting the pages and shelves of the world’s most prestigious fashion publications, boutiques and department stores across the world. Their collection has recently appeared in Vogue, Elle, Instyle, Muse and L’Officiel to name a few. In addition to becoming a celebrity favorite and having been carried by the likes of Lady Gaga, to Paris Hilton to Kate Moss, the collection can be found in numerous luxury stores and boutiques, including Harrods and Galleries Lafayette.

The Fall of 2009 will be the mark of Angel Jackson’s official launch in the U.S. with debuts at Henri Bendel’s and Intermix in New York.

Boats at Dawn Egirdir, Turkey

Morning Dive On the dock, Grand Cayman

Egirdir is a quaint little town in the Lake District of western Turkey. Because it’s settled comfortably on a skinny peninsula that juts out onto Lake Egirdir, nearly every accommodation has a lake view. While I heartily recommend the local cuisine which involves the locally harvested ‘lobster’, I advise caution on the ‘cruises’ nearly every pension offers. My experience started out with lovely views, a sumptuous breeze generated by our speed across the placid waters, the sun descending heavily into the cradling mountains.... until thousands of moths were somehow attracted to us. By the time I alighted by the hostel, I was covered head to toe in moth dust. Ick.

While doing some vertigo-inducing dives down the Cayman’s famous walls, I hung out with a few locals who told me an interesting story. In the late 16th century, a representative of the British empire was touring the Caribbean holdings of the realm.

His ship was blown into the perilous reef near St. George and started sinking... fast.

The Caymanians mobilized quickly and were able to rescue all passengers and cargo.

Upon hearing this tale of peril and succor, the Queen granted the Islands a tax reprieve in perpetuity.

Olive Groves Traveling through Andalucia, Spain

The Isle of Skye off the western coast of Scotland is spectacularly rough, jagged and brutal. Beautiful. If you’ve ever been a fan of the movie ‘The Highlander’ you wouldn’t be surprised that this is the ancestral home of the clan MacLeod.

Traveling through southern Spain, I noticed many things. Ham tastes different in every town. Twisty turny mountain roads wide enough for only one car, can somehow accommodate two at high speeds. Olive groves are ubiquitous and look cool from on high. A basic understanding of ‘kitchen Spanish’ will help you nearly little in Spain.
