Never let go of your dreams... they just may come true. It was in middle school, when Adrianna Favero got bitten by the bug of taking beautiful pictures. This was the time when Adrianna was strongly led down a path of photography - after spending hours on end learning about black and white photo taking as well as the process of shooting pictures and watching them develop on paper. The dark room was Adrianna’s new home. While in high school, Adrianna learned that her new hobby and love for the camera could also be what she did to make a living. Deciding to follow a non-traditional path, Adrianna enrolled in college with the commitment to pursue her passion. As part of her studies, she lived and studied in Italy, taking in the rich culture and art that surrounded her. Upon her return back to the United States, she had a new perspective of the world around her and knew she had to move to New York City to actualize her dreams.

Raine Magazine Vol. 7 - The Hollywood Issue

15

Adrianna saw New York as an escape to create beauty through a lens of a camera. A city that never sleeps that’s filled with amazing people and wild adventures waiting to be captured. She felt New York was a place that pushes you to do better and to love what you do in the process. However, Adrianna quickly realized that moving to the Big Apple wasn’t as easy as it may have seemed. Not knowing anyone and trying to break into a very competitive industry was a challenging hurdle that Adrianna successfully overcame with determination and perseverance. If you were to ask her what it takes to pursue a career in photography, this is what she would say. “Make sure it’s something that you love, shoot every day, find mentors and learn from them. Absorb as much as you can and pay attention to other people’s work. To be an inspiration, you have to give inspiration.” Andrea Favero is not only an inspiration to others but she is truly motivated to create great things for herself and the world -- not just for the present but for many years to come. As she states, “In this world you are only as good as your work.”

A DECADE OF CINEMA:

Looking Back at Ten Films That Made Their Mark

By Sam Morris

Without question, the new millennium ushered in a fresh wave of modern moviemaking. While studios were milking nearly every major film franchise to their last drop, amidst the clutter were a handful of films that took cinema in an exciting direction. These unique films examined ingrained cultural issues of past and present, delved into the core of contemporary relationships like never before, took characters and audiences to places before unimaginable, and showcased some of the most impressive acting work seen in years. I’ve narrowed a list down to ten films that I feel best highlight and represent the diverse offerings in cinema during the past ten years, in order of release year. I start with Traffic (2000), Steven Soderbergh’s epic documentary style looked at present-day American drug culture that resonates just as strongly today as it did a decade ago. With an assortment of brilliantly interwoven narcotics linked story-lines spanning across all socio economic groups, it’s a potent film with a resonating message that never attempts to preach to the audience, allowing them to be fully engrossed in the gritty drama unfolding. An intimate film that focuses on the process of severe grieving, In the Bedroom (2001) is a moving, painful look at an aging couple coping with the tragic loss of their only child. Managing to create a handful of beautifully crafted moments alongside two stellar performances

by Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson, the best scenes are between the two of them, the camera following their every move and tracking their intense emotional journey as you hope they can come to some sort of painless resolution. Unlike In the Bedroom, The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) is a more lighthearted, quirky look at a family in turmoil. An eccentric study of life, and death, and everything in between, with Gene Hackman as the well meaning but selfish patriarch of a clan of geniuses and former child prodigies,.Wes Anderson’s dry comedy always leaves me laughing. Another film that is more “lighter fare” is Rob Marshall’s masterful movie adaptation of the stage musical Chicago, a story of fame and greed from the standpoint of two sexy murderesses circa the 1920’s. Adapting and translating a stage show to film can be a tricky task, but with a top notch cast and razzle dazzle editing and cinematography, Chicago is certainly the most commercially and critically successful contemporary movie musical offering, and rightfully so. Out of all of the recent flicks that use boxing and fighting as a larger metaphor, Clint Eastwood’s absorbing Million Dollar Baby (2004), a story of faith and overcoming the odds, transcends that cliché exponentially. Earning star Hilary Swank her second Academy Award©, Million Dollar Baby takes the audience somewhere unexpected for the third and final act, altering the

Raine Magazine Vol. 7 - The Hollywood Issue

28

meaning and building upon emotional impact of the previous portion of the film, much like the next film on my list, Caché (2005). An eerily slow paced but highly effective psychological drama about perception and facing ones demons of the past, Caché was an acclaimed French film that only received a limited U.S. release. A lesson in the art of subtlety, and with a shockingly out of nowhere climax, Caché (like Million Dollar Baby), packs a real emotional punch. Another film from 2005, Capote, also features a performance from its lead actor that shined during awards season, and out of all the biopics released over the past ten years, Capote stands out for its highly stylized realism, and of course Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s command performance as the infamous writer. In an age where anybody with an internet connection can technically be a writer, Capote will always be a nostalgic and meaningful look at the art of masterful storytelling here in America. Taking audiences into a dark realm of fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) is Guillermo Del Toro’s visually stunning and spellbinding masterpiece. Set in 1940’s Spain a few years after the Spanish Civil War, it’s a visceral story about adolescence, imagination, and good vs. evil, and several scenes and sequences in this film will leave you breathless alongside the stunning makeup, art direction and other technical elements.

Next is the brilliantly acted and paced melodrama Notes on a Scandal (2006) which centers on the lustful lesbian longings of an elderly British schoolteacher (Judi Dench) as she pines for the affections of Cate Blanchett, a bohemian art teacher who recently had a secret affair with a male teenage student half her age (hint to Dench...or so you’d think). British dramas can sometimes be a bit stuffy, but with stellar leading performances and a mesmerizingly fast paced score by Phillip Glass, Notes on a Scandal never ceases to be intriguing and entertaining. The final film of my list, There Will Be Blood (2007), also benefits from a score (by Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood) that adds another rich layer to the overall viewing experience. Based on the Upton Sinclair novel and featuring one of (if not the) most impressive and captivating performance of the last decade, There Will Be Blood spans nearly thirty years with Daniel Day Lewis as Daniel Plainview, a religious, semi violent oil tycoon who appreciates a good milkshake. This rough and no holds barred examination of greed, power and responsibility makes Wall Street look like Trading Places and is certainly the crown jewel thus far in filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s career (which also includes the films Magnolia and Boogie Nights). Honorable Mention, Benjamin Button - for it’s original storyline, rich character development, and hypnotic cinematography.

MUSIC

A Blazing Band - Eddie the Gun By Nina Udeagha

An Artist to Listen To • Eddie the Gun is an artistic burst of rock/pop fusion energy that burst from the underground music scene in London. Norwegian beauty Camilla Romestrand, as the lead vocalist, plans on taking her band to the top of the world. Eddie the Gun is such a unique band that it’s hard to compare them to anyone else out there - which is sure to gravitate any music lover towards them. To add more to the excitement, their hit “Don’t be Afraid” is showcased in the upcoming horror flick “Chain Letter” starring Nikki Reed. The questions to ask is, “Can Hollywood handle all this budding star quality?”

Camilla: “Thank you, thank you. Well, we didn’t actually meet Kanye to do the mix, so we just kinda master mixed his song with ours to create it”

Raine Magazine: Was music always a dream of yours? Camilla: “Well, there is Charlie Aksun, as the bass guitarist - he’s from London. Then there’s Johnny Kapps my other guitarist - he’s from New York. Then of course there is Matt Rullo and he’s also from NewYork. We all kind of met when I was just looking for some band mates while in London.”

RM: What made you change your band’s name from Doll’s House to Eddie the Gun? Camilla: “Thank you, thank you, well we didn’t actually meet Kanye to do the mix so we just kinda master mixed his song with ours to create it”

Camilla: “Don’t be Afraid is about losing someone close to me. It’s about losing my grandfather and viewing it through my grandmother’s eyes and feeling what she’s feeling.” RM: What’s your future aspiration for you and your band? SPORTS

GYMNASTICS is one of the most challenging and awe-inspiring of sports. A few years ago as a novice parent of newly competitive gymnasts, I decided to do some research into the journey I was going to embark on when we moved out of the recreational classes onto the team. I was surprised to find out that most high-level gymnasts earn collegiate scholarships as early as the beginning of their Senior year in high school and produce the greatest number of straight-A scholar athletes of any other NCAA sport. Perhaps it’s the incredible discipline, focus, and undying determination that one must have when they choose to follow the path of a competitive gymnast. The world of gymnastics is known to a very few. This is due to the level of difficulty the sport holds as the young athletes progress through the ten levels. As they climb the competition ladder, the number of gymnasts that can master the set-out skills, decrease greatly, as well as the number of parents and children alike that can handle the grueling training schedule. Nevertheless, it is one of the most amazing sports to watch and one of the few that teaches many important life lessons beyond just winning and losing. Although its high cost on the competitive level, staying in the sport, proves to be worth it for those that choose to. Gymnastics is a rich sport in travel, entertainment, and fun. I can assure you there is no other sport that brings the same sort of adrenaline rush, in which one experiences when watching young girls flip backwards in mid air over a 4-inch wide balance beam touching down only with their feet. Nor as they witness boys suspend their bodies at times more than 19 feet off the ground with just two arms holding onto small circular rings. It is a mesmerizing experience, to see such fearlessness, strength and agility in such young individuals. The sport of gymnastics produces an incredible high number of physicians, engineers, artists, and inventors. It is a sport that deserves more attention

besides what’s given during the Olympic Games. It is a sport that through sponsors, takes children off the streets and gives them a new purpose and drive in life. It is a sport that gives teenagers something to strive for beyond the approval of their social circle. It builds mental and physical strength, family bonds, and great friendships. It is through gymnastics that I had the pleasure of meeting a future Olympian. I introduce you to a great young athlete on an amazing journey to the next Olympic Games, John Orozco. The Orozco family committed everything to their youngest of five children, a child gifted both in and outside the classroom. John, now 16, commutes 30 miles each way, five days a week to train. As I watched John for the first time, I knew he was unique. “This is his calling,” I thought quietly to myself. As he twisted, turned, and tossed his body through the air at incredible heights, he showed such a high level of focus, form, and extraordinary strength! I wondered how someone so young could do things you would only dream a super hero being able to do. As a mother of aspiring gymnasts myself, he was a true inspiration. After getting to know him and his parents over the months, I was in true awe of his determination and his accomplishments. His parents are truly dedicated to John’s dream of becoming one of the best gymnasts in the world. They never complain about the 45-minute commute to the gym, the long practice hours that extend to 5 hours on some days, and the endless trips all over the globe to which his competitions take him. John is currently one of the youngest members to make the Senior National Team. If he retains his position through 2012, the world will have the pleasure of watching him represent the United States in the next Summer Olympics. Hats off to you, John! We look forward to cheering you on in London!!

Every designer has a story but every handbag designer has a story within a story to tell. Andrea Tobin is no exception, as creator behind the Marla Cielo brand; she brings art and fashion together through an innovative collection of handbags. Her unique form of art becomes more than just a piece of fabric but a way of life. The journey started while attending the prestigious Columbia University. Tobin gets the opportunity to study abroad in Madrid, Spain, where she attends an exhibition collaboration featuring Andy Warhol, Clemente, and Basquiat. There, she is exposed to a whole new world that would soon become hers -- a world filled with massive canvases full of fun colors and intricate detailing. This inspires Tobin to painting and she hasn’t stopped since. Upon returning to New York to finish college, Tobin makes her first hand snap purse that’s a canvas folded in half which snaps at the sides. After getting positive feedback from people while walking in her neighborhood, Tobin begins to think of the possibilities of making a market for her handbags and thus Marla Cielo is born. But who is Marla Cielo? Well, she is born from real experiences and endless imaginations at the exact place where art and fashion meet. She is not just a bag; she is Marla, whose personality is brought to life through creation. Marla is urban and unpredictable where the perspective of art represents each side of her. The plaid colors represent the aggressive, edgy side whereas the roses represent the whimsical, feminine side of Marla. As a handbag designer, Andrea Tobin has turned her passion that’s personal and sacred into a consumer abled product to be shared with the rest of the world. So, as the brand grows, it evolves to touch the lives of others as well. Through family support and drive to do what she loves, Tobin hopes to expand her brand beyond handbags and include duffel size travel bags, cardholders, and painted notebook covers -- representing the writing aspect of the brand. She plans to distribute her products into more boutiques and retail stores including New York, Miami, and Los Angeles with hopes of opening a studio space in Manhattan that’s an interactive environment to the public to get involved in the creative process as it happens. What is admirable about Tobin is that she doesn’t think about the amazing color combinations that she creates, she just paints. Her passion is what drives her to make Marla Cielo, a brand to be around for a very long time. She creates exclusive prints that aren’t planned or replicated but as the journey continues, Marla Cielo is becoming not just art but a voice of the everyday woman.

A New Experience

An Exotic Getaway:

THE CANARY ISLANDS Written by Noelle Frieson

Raine Magazine Vol. 7 - The Hollywood Issue

38

LOCATED JUST OFF THE COAST OF SOUTHERN MOROCCO, the Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago made up of 7 islands. With a mix of Spanish, Arabic and Asian influences it is home to long hot Summer days, Spring-like Winters and long lavish beaches. With so many islands and such beautiful weather, it’s hard to choose which island to hop to next! By plane, travel between each island is less than an hour and ferries travel between the islands several times a day. Let’s take a brief tour through three of these breathtaking islands.

Largo, Puerto de la Cruz has small beaches of volcanic sand, of which the most notable being Playa Jardin and Martianez. On Tenerife, be sure to take time for a luxurious wellness retreat at Hotel Botanico – one of the Leading Hotels of the World. This hotel offers a lavish weight loss program. The stay includes full board with low calorie, gluten free, vegetarian or low sugar meals, a personal dietitian, daily body treatments, a personalized exercise program and access to their famous Oriental Spa Garden. La Palma If you want to avoid the masses and retreat to seclusion, try one of the smaller Canary Islands, La Palma. There is a wonderful peacefulness to this largely untouched, green island. There are mountains and beaches, volcanoes and forests, ideal for sun, walking and hiking. And with one of the clearest skies in the world, you are able to see the most beautiful meteorological occurrences in the northern hemisphere.

Tenerife: If you’re looking for a walking town to take in beautiful architecture and relaxing views of the sea - try Tenerife. The island’s northern most city of Puerto de la Cruz was once an old fisherman’s town but now hosts Largo Martianez. Largo Martianez is a series of seawater pools created by the Canary artist Cesar Manrique and is the premier spot for bathing and resting in the sun. Besides the

La Palma is home to a wide range of restaurants, bars, tourist shops and Puerto Naos, a stunning black sand beach. This island is for the traveler who doesn’t want the pomp and circumstance of a grand resort. Most who visit go to the town of Puerto Naos, located on the west coast of La Palma. Fuerteventura With only one hotel and 3 to 4 blocks of sea side apartments for travelers -this is the ultimate getaway. Fuerteventura is the oldest Canary Island, formed about 70 million years ago from a massive volcano. It is only 60 miles from the coast of Morocco and has 125 miles of some of the best beaches in the region, all made from the incoming sand of the Sarhara. Though the Canaries are a laid back set of islands, for “fun”, try La Palma. Water sports, festivals, markets and fairs are common in every town sprinkled up and down the coast. But if golf is your sport, Fuerteventura is your island of choice. Sunny all year round with very little rain, there are 5 luxury golf courses located on the island. But be weary, the wind of Fuerteventura makes it great for windsurfing but sometimes trying for your 9 iron. With four other islands and a wealth of climates, terrain, cultures and activities, the Canary Islands offers something for everyone.

The Darkest Child Did we forget to read this book? Written by: Daphne Mickle

Lets have three cheers for Delores Phillips; Rah, Delores, Rah Phillips, Rah Rah for Delores Phillips! Delores Phillips is a first time published writer who is nestled in Cleveland, Georgia; she has shelved her talents for several decades before cranking out this winning novel in 2004. Expresso, Mocha, Caramel, and Vanilla. Flavors of your favorite naturally brewed hot drink? No. A few of the various shades of color that exist within the black community. The story, the darkest child reveals how one achieved success in the small town of Pakersfield, Georgia based on the shade of brown or lack their of -- of your skin. This story goes deeper than complexion, the burnt and varied hues of family feuds and fables not only touches paper but reaches the heart of every reader. Each character is stark and demands his or her place in the adventures beyond Penyon Road, Georgia. Rozelle Quinn, the antagonist, and mama to nine children, doesn't plan on giving her uterus a break because her fair skin and kinky- free hair, is her 9 to 5 and self-worth. Being two shades shy of whip creme, Rozelle has managed to woo all the men in the black community, some of which had no business being hypnotized, and one or two outside of the race. Ms. Quinn having had a terrible beginning, just wants to get by, and her looks help her greatly in that department. Her one night stands would sometimes extend to three night stands or catch me if you cans! This lifestyle was brutal with very little glimpses of hope and rewards were often rent money, grocery money, clothing, shoes, and nine times out of ten, an unplanned pregnancy. Tangy Mae Quinn is the darkest child to be found in the crayola box but she's got promise, spunk, hope and self-worth. However, this young lady is the most despised in her household and through schooling she accesses an exit from the crevices of depression and poverty. Pakersfield, Georgia has got a lot of unpaved, rocky roads and Tangy Mae Quinn has walked them all! This book is wickedly good - your stomach will turn, your mouth will be ajar, and you will find yourself engaged in ways akin to a cinematic experience. We look forward to more from this author!

IN THE KNOW

WHERE TO EAT, STAY, CHILL FEATURED CITY

MIAMI By Monique Forrest

Does this sound familiar? The city of Chicago is digging itself out of 20 inches of snow, Dallas is currently on a freeze advisory, New York City is suffering from a 42 hour ice storm, and Miami…. is reveling in 80 degree weather. Jealous? Well, if you aren’t, you should be. Every year while the winter blues hits the rest of the US, South Floridians are sun bathing. So, whenever you are ready to head south, here are some places you MUST check out.

WHERE TO Eat - UVA69 Restaurant: UVA69 is located at N.E. 69th and Biscayne Blvd, on the outer edge of Miami’s Design District. The ambiance is classic Miami, meaning that for a brief second you will forget that you are still in the United States. The outside patio is divided into two parts, on one side there is a bohemian themed bar/ lounge and the other side is reminiscent of a Brazilian or Spanish cafe. The inside of the restaurant has a more formal dining arrangement. The food has such intense flavor and there are so many options on the menu that it will leave you in a state of vertigo. The menu is Barcelona-inspired, with classic American dishes that have Caribbean and European flair. There are many options from the organic chicken roast to the plantain mozzarella empanadas. If you are a dessert lover you must try the guava bread pudding! Lunch ranges from $10 - $15 – Dinner prices are between $20 and $30 and dessert is around $8. UVA69 is a must eat. WHERE TO Stay – Epic Hotel: One of the common mistakes that Miami visitors make is thinking that the only treasure Miami has to offer is South Beach. There are many indulgences, which include but are not limited to Downtown, Brickell, Midtown, the Design District, Little Havana, and Little Haiti. Epic Hotel is one of the many treats located in Downtown – it’s a boutique hotel, with breath taking views of the bay, and of the city. The service is impeccable. The rooms are spacious. The hotel offers a spa, banquet halls, conference rooms, a pool, a fitness center, award winning restaurants, and even pet accommodations. Epic is Metromover accessible, so you can take the train and discover different parts of the city. Epic’s nightly rate ranges on average between $200 - $275. In sum, Epic is a must stay.

WHERE TO CHILL – Blue Martini Lounge (Brickell): Blue Martini is located in the heart of Mary Brickell Village. When you walk in you can’t help but notice the ultra fluorescent blue lighting that runs throughout the bar. The bar features plenty of seating, private dining, bottle service, and an outside terrace. If you are looking for some mid-week fun, stop by Blue Martini on Wednesday night aka Ladies Night. There is an awesome live band playing everyone’s favorite hits ranging from the Rolling Stones to Beyonce. The band plays until11:30/11:45 and then the DJ takes over for the remainder of the night. Ladies get a special welcome with their first martini free and every drink half off. Whether its happy hour or Ladies Night, the Blue Martini is a definite must see. SAN FRANCISCO The crisp air, beaming sun, the almost life-like feel of the street artwork, the sounds of the community walking up and down the pavement, the gentle shift from day to night; and you hear the infectious commotion of happy hour proceeding from the local café and clubs. This place is none other than San Francisco. The semblance of San Francisco -- breathes of life at ease and free flowing. This makes it an ideal place for a tourist or local to do some R&R. Here are some places that anybody in town or anyone just visiting should try out.

WHERE TO EAT - San Francisco’s restaurants are distinguished in the state of California because of their individualistic themes and artistic atmosphere. For instance, theeatery Michael Mina has a rich exotic taste that matches their array of entrée’s. Owner/executive Chef Michael Mina says,” I have been very fortunate to earn a living through my true passion,” says Mina. “Over a decade in the kitchen has taught me so much about myself, my style and how to share this excitement with my guests. Each new project shows me that there is absolutely nothing I would rather do.” One of the clientele’s favorite dishes is the Kabocha Squash Soufflé with black truffle cream. This specific dish is best-loved because of the whipped creaminess that the soufflé leaves in your mouth. With his ever-growing clientele I am sure his passion will be put to good use. Another restaurant that can be compared to Michael Mina is La Folie. This old-school style restaurant is a chic place to have your business meeting or a perfect choice for a simple first date. The owner/executive Chef Roland Passot opened La Folie with his wife Jamie and “It has been sheer bliss ever since” says Passot. A consumer favorite is the Pink Lady Apple Tarte Tatin Bread Pudding. This dish is basically an apple fritter topped with Marker’s Mark ice cream; even though the preparation seems simple this dish has almost a cult following. With almost two decades of culinary training from world renowned French chefs, I believe Passot is prepared to take San Francisco by storm.

Where to Stay - Whether you’re just dropping in for a business trip or you’re a visiting tourist, Omni San Francisco and Hotel Drisco are your best picks for a hotel. To begin the Omni San Francisco (far right, bottom left) has mastered the art of giving you satisfaction and class at the same time. To say that Omni tries to go above and beyond for their patrons is an understatement. Along with its sleek and stylish demeanor it’s not very hard to believe that this hotel has a place in the top ten hotels in San Francisco. Another equally appeasing hotel is the Hotel Drisco (bottom two pictures) Their calming effect and the symmetry of each room makes one feel as if it were personally designed for each one of their clientele. When you walk into your room you instantly feel a sense of ease. The Hotel Drisco gives beauty to simplicity with their calming colors and classic furniture pieces. There’s no doubt that your stay at the Drisco will always be memorable. The Drisco only uses the top of the line for their patrons with their silk sheets and always bubbly and friendly staff. Hotel Drisco and the Omni are for sure sights to be seen when visiting San Francisco The city has so much to offer and so much to give with their culture and almost bohemian chic way of life that it is contagious when you’re in the city. It is truly a place where you can sit and breathe without having to deal with too much hustle and bustle. San Francisco should defiantly be at the top of your next places to visit.

WHERE TO CHILL - San Francisco is largely known because of their wide LBGT community and the almost alluring effect that their nightlife has. Some spots that summarize this idea are Eve Lounge, 111 Minna Gallery and Ruby Skye. These clubs stand out due to the unique personality of each one. Eve Lounge (Far Right) has a sexy feel to it with its sultry lighting; and the colors of the deep burgundy and mahogany wood meshing together. Flowing well with the artwork of the roaring twenties women scantily clad and to top it off the smooth jazz and R&B music cascading from the speakers. With this lounge you can never go wrong because it has elegance, style and class. Next on the list is 111 Minna Gallery (Far Left), it is in a class of its own because it’s an art gallery by day and a lounge by night. Within the gallery, they have events going on during the week such as open mic night or a poetry slam. This spot is an ideal place for the more artistic soul looking for a creative escape and a drink at the same time. Minna’s Gallery is eccentric compared to its competitors because of the simplistic caricature of the artwork surrounding the gallery/ lounge. Minna’s Gallery is a lovely addition to the San Francisco nightlife. Last but not least is Ruby Sky (Bottom Picture). This is a straight dance club with a very Moulin Rouge feel to it. The way I can describe it is Vegas in San Francisco. When the music is on the party is in full force with acrobats coming from the ceiling and go-go dancers on the floor with a wide dance floor. This club has so much energy even the shy wallflower will be entertained. As you can see the nightlife in San Francisco is almost as famous as the Golden Gate Bridge. MANAGEMENT Remote Management - How to effectively manage your team when you’re not in front of them. According to Forrester Research Consumer 2009 Technographics Survey - there is an expected increase in work from home jobs in the United States by 43% by the year 2016. That is an estimated 63 million people. 63 million Americans working remotely! If you are a company that has a team of telecommuting employees you know the financial benefits from decreased office overhead and an increased contractor workforce, that doesn’t require benefits. However, the cultural benefits rival the financial ones. Virtual staff are reported to have higher productivity, higher retention, longer workdays, less sick days and are happier overall. Telecommuting has taken the world by storm. But with a virtual staff comes a whole new set of management rules. We as entrepreneurs have very specific visions and tend to micro-manage. So the question then becomes: How do you successfully run an office when your employees may work from several different states or countries? Here are some simple tips to keep your army of contractors happy uber productive: In traditional offices, managers have constant face to face time with direct reports and peers are able to collaborate around the conference table or water cooler. Some of that interactivity is lost when managing remote employees unless strong and consistent lines of communication are set up from the beginning. Incorporating simple communication tools can help manage employees and encourage team work. “Small steps such as linking everyone on the same instant messaging system” explains Susan Powell of JobProsper.com, a work from home job board and virtual staff management company, “daily conference calls or skype meetings make a world of difference when managing virtual workers. By providing a regularly scheduled time for remote teams to interact and report on productivity creates a sense of corporate community and accountability. “ Technology has made it possible for companies to hire remote employees in mass. Email, Skype and ipads and smart phones make

distributing information instantaneous. And when managing virtual employees it is imperative to keep up with the latest technologies. Websites like BasecampHQ.com allow interactive project management and file sharing for all of your employees. Prices range from a no frills free plan to a monthly $149 with unlimited users, projects and 75GB of storage. And for a monthly fee Microsoft Cloud can offer you a whole range of products, from Word to Outlook, online where files are accessible from any computer, smart phone or tablet. If you are a small business and just starting to hire virtual employees use Google Documents. It gives you a taste of virtual or “cloud” computing without the price tag. You are able to collaborate on excel , word, and power point documents with as many people as you like for free. And all you need is a free Google account. Like with any position, the type of personality you hire is very important. In terms of virtual employees, it is probably the most important thing you do. Powell says, “The key is to hire independent workers. When we are helping a company hire a virtual staff , we look for candidates who either have entrepreneurial experience or have had jobs that required them to work independently with strict deadlines.” Being able to work independently is the core of working from home. Look for candidates who have worked in a separate location than their direct supervisor or have had a client base. These types of positions require meeting deadlines without a great deal of supervision. You want to know that your virtual hires are able to withstand all of the distractions within their own home. Finally, create a culture around your company. If you have weekly Skype meetings ask that your employees are in professional dress (at least from the waist up). If your employees work on separate coasts have one time a year when all come to your corporate offices. Create a intranet, secured webpage or private Facebook group where everyone can list their birthdays, pictures of children and accomplishments outside of work. Creating a corporate culture for remote employees builds loyalty and teamwork.

MARKETING Beyond Facebook and Twitter - How to keep your website relevant Use modern technology to keep your website exciting. Video blogs are becoming the norm on most sites. Whether it is demonstrating your newest product or an interview with a top professional in your field, video blogs and other online media vehicles can make your site more interactive and informative. How do you know that your content is hitting an accord with readers? The best way to gage the success of your content is to track how many visitors you have. With website analytics you are able to tell if your website updates boost your number of visitors. Most hosting sites, such as Go Daddy, offer website analytics as a pay per month service. When using Go Daddy you can track visitors daily or in real time. If you are running an advertising or email campaign you can compare how effective the promotion is in relation to your regular traffic. As always, my favorite resource is Google. Google Analytics is free and effective. You can tie it in with any Google Adwords campaign and get detailed reports to help you figure out the success of your content.

Your website is the most important tool in your marketing arsenal. Today the first thing a consumer does when looking for a store, product, or service provider is go to their website. If your website is not pithy, direct and informative you could lose a client before even speaking to them. Keeping your website relevant is the best way to capture the interest of your target audience. Content is king! This is non-negotiable when maintaining your website. You must update content regularly and on schedule. If your content is updated daily, weekly or monthly you must always do it on time. Updates can include products, blogs or articles. The quickest way to lose visitors is for them to see the same information every time they come to your site. It would be like going to a movie theater that never updates their movies. Also make sure that the theme of your content is consistent with your mission and geared towards your target audience. If you own a fashion blog, writing on the hottest new indie band might not be a match, unless you feature a designer who is dressing them.

FINANCE Bootstrapping Your Business Every entrepreneur’s dream is to come up with an idea and get the funding needed to start the business in style. But the reality is that most entrepreneurs spend 3 to 5 years living sale to sale. Bootstrapping your business frequently is the only way to turn your dream into reality. Here are 5 tools to use while you bootstrap your way to success.

of providing benefits or certain tax responsibilities, nor will you need to provide them with office amenities such as a computer, phone or internet service. You are able to pay consultants per hour, per project or on a monthly retainer. You can find consultants on sites such as: JobProsper.com, eLance. com or oDesk.com

Lose the Lease! Renting an office space is very expensive. For most companies it is the largest line item on their balance sheet and usually unnecessary when starting out. If you are opening a brick and mortar retail store or restaurant you will not be able to avoid leasing a space. But most service based and many product based businesses are able to start from a dining room table, basement, garage or spare bedroom. Starting your business from home saves you money to spend on product development, marketing and materials. There are many national companies that rent office space and conference rooms by the day or even hour. You can utilize their spaces for a small fee when you need it to put a professional face on your business. Check out sites such as: Regus.com or Carrworkplaces.com

Create Strategic Partnerships Win-win partnerships are just that, relationships where both parties benefit. Seek out other companies that can help you further your goals and reach out to them. If you are a caterer, form a marketing partnership with a florist. If you are a fashion designer, look for a PR firm and dress their A-list clients. With everyone you meet ask yourself, “How can we be of service to one another?”

Hire Remotely In the beginning you might wear every hat imaginable. But as your business grows you will need the expertise and assistance of other people such as web designers, marketing & PR professionals and even administrative assistants. If you are just starting out you may not have the cash on hand or the need to hire full time employees. And if you are working out of your finished basement you may not have the space for them. Hire virtual consultants for these jobs. You won’t have the burden

The simplest way to see if your content is relevant to is to ask for opinions. Provide a means of feedback for your audience. It can be a submission form or a specific email address just for user comments on the site. However, do not opt for a feedback system that automatically updates to your site. The opinion of one user can sway the opinions of many. So screen all comments before posting them on your site for others to see. Finally, you must know the competition and what they are doing on their site. Innovation is the norm in business today. You must keep track of what is being done in your industry and strive to be a leader when communicating with your audience.

Keep your 9 to 5 Yes, your business is your passion and you want to spend every waking hour working on it. But without income you won’t have that spare bedroom to call an office. Making the choice to leave your day job is hard. But a good rule of thumb is not to resign until you land that big client or secure enough orders to keep up with your monthly living necessities. Close a Sale! This is the most important part of bootstrapping a business. You must make a sale. Until you sell your product or gain a client your business is just a hobby. Business and marketing plans are a necessity to succeed in business, but not to begin a business. As you sell, you can tweak your product and develop your business plan. But your first sale opens the door to actualizing your dream.

Q. As a Celebrity Fitness and Nutrition Consultant, what do you love and hate about what you do? AM: I don’t hate hate anything --- I can tell you that I am having the time of my life. I am very VERY lucky to be doing what I love and making a living out of it. It took a whole lot of work to get me where I am today...I just enjoy the journey! Q. You went from a model to a Fitness and Nutrition Guru...take us down that journey? AM: I actually have been a ‘fitness and gym bunny’ since childhood...I remember being obsessed with Mousercize (Disney Channel) and Kathy Smith in the fourth grade! By age 12, I just happened to be tall enough to enter and win a model search (in a MALL mind you) and the story began! I modeled through high school doing catalogs for JC Penney, Marshall’s and other big department stores until I was in my 20’s. I signed with Ford models at 19 and that is when I began runway modeling and the TRAVEL. I have modeled for top designers such as Versace and Vivienne Westwood. When I moved to New York...I still modeled but I went into more television spots (MTV, HBO, Comcast, Comedy Central) and even voice over work for MTV: Music Television. During all of this...I still stayed with fitness. I watched a fitness competition in 2001 on ESPN late one night...a year later I competed myself and won the overall. Then the following year, I won the world championship and that started off my career in fitness and modeling (I have been on over 25 magazine covers since 2005) combined with my other true love, media! Which is where I am today. Its been quite the ride.

Q. Along with everything else you are doing, you now have your own clothing line...can you tell us more about that? AM: Check out “http://www.aliciamariebyrogiani.com/” www. aliciamariebyrogiani.com. We launched “officially” in December 2010, but I have had my own “pieces” since ‘08...but this is the first of having my own line. Tags and all. I partnered with Italian design company ROGIANI because I love their clothing...I actually owned a few ROGIANI swimwear designs that I loved, so I basically sought to get in touch with the company itself. That was in 2005. Now, we are launching ALICIA MARIE by Rogiani and it feels great because these are simple pieces that I have to be as functional as they are flattering. That is what women want for their workouts and yoga classes. To feel good AND why not look good!!! Some of my designs have already been featured in Shape magazine and Fitness. Q. Many models as well as TV stars become obsessed with their weight and then develop an unhealthy eating pattern...what advice could you give to combat that? AM: The pressure to look “perfect” is a part of what Hollywood is built on. It’s a tough world here. ESPECIALLY when you have studio people telling these girls that in order to “get the part” or what have you--they’d have to lose weight. You can see how it is quite easy to get into a pattern and become obsessed and resort to

Q. You wore many hats along the way throughout your career: model, TV Host, Executive, Fitness Competitor, TV personality, and now Consultant to the stars...which role was your favorite and why? AM: You forgot two - I am a writer AND I have my own fitnesswear line( HYPERLINK “http://www.aliciamariebyrogiani.com/” www. aliciamariebyrogiani.com)! I have a syndicated column in Oxygen Magazine (fitness for women) and a Monthly...”ASK ALICIA.” I am also about to release my fitness and beauty ebook series come Spring 2011 - something I am very, very excited about. SO, PICKING A favorite is a tough one because I LOVE IT ALL!!! My focus right now is building my fitnesswear line and a combination of writing and on-air. That’s why my dream job would probably be a Talk Show --Tyra Banks, Ellen. Something along those lines. Q.You also hosted your own Fashion Television Show and have been a featured trainer on MTV Made...how did you make the transition from runway to television? AM: MTV is my FAMILY. LOL or rather like one. I have been “with” MTV since I was right out of my teens in some capacity. I have worked behind the camera, as well as in front of the camera and even behind the mic doing voice-over work. When the position came for a fitness trainer on a new show called “MADE” (multiple Emmy Awards won for MTV) - I jumped at the opportunity. Fun stuff - and a very rewarding experience.

I see people fall victim all the time. It’s disheartening. Q. Many of our readers are executives, creative entrepreneurs, as well as entertainers with busy schedules. How can they maintain a healthy diet? AM: EVERYONE IS BUSY. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I hear someone say that they aren’t in shape because, “I am busy,” We ALL are. People make priorities for what they want. They are “too busy” to get an hour of cardio in BUT they have time to watch Real Housewives or Idol (helllooooo TIVO!). I tell people there are results and excuses. Which are you about? People who are in shape and look good MAKE THE TIME. For me, it’s part of my business, but it is also part of who I am. I like being strong and fit and I plan to stay healthy for the duration of my life. DO you know...I go to the 24 hour gym sometimes at 2am??

PLAN AHEAD AND BE PREPARED - Wear blinders. Let nothing stop you - Even if the woman next to you is eating pasta bolognese with cream sauce while you are eating a salad with chicken. Lose the sugar and alcohol. Lose the excess carbs unless you plan on running a triathlon next week. The main reason I decided to sit down and write my book series is to make this EASY for even the fitness and diet time-challenged woman. It’s time to GET REAL. Results or excuses. Q. Could you share with us one of your favorite recipes? I love making homemade protein bars! They are good for people on the GO and the ingredients aren’t chemical or tummy-upsetting. AM: This is one my faves. Just keep in mind: these aren’t brownies!

Chewy Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bars 1 cup - oat flour 1 ½ cups - whey protein powder ¼ cup - cocoa powder ½ cup - nonfat dry milk powder ¼ cup - stevia blend or other sugar alternative (Splenda, Go Whey from Whole Foods) ½ teaspoon - salt 2 egg whites ½ teaspoon - super-strength chocolate flavoring (LorAnn) ½ teaspoon - super-strength peanut butter flavoring (LorAnn) ¼ cup - creamy peanut butter ¼ to 1/3 cup - water Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Near the end of high school, Paidemoyo Chideya's art teacher asked what her future plans were. At that time it was law school. This very tall man took the petite student by the shoulders and gave her a gentle shake as he said, “Girl, you're an artist, you can't do that. It's not who you are.” It was that moment she realized she did have the option of pursuing her artistic gifts. With his guidance and the encouragement of her parents, she headed off to Paris and enrolled in the Parson School of Design's Foundation Program. While studying art in Paris Chideya had her first taste of what fashion design was all about and she fell in love. However, she still chose a year later to go on to law school. She remembers, “Law was painful for me. I succeeded and I did quite well, but as soon as I was done I packed everything up and moved to New York to finish my fashion degree.” Internships are a very important part of every student's training and while studying at Parsons in New York, Chideya was blessed to have some amazing ones such as Michael Kors and Caroline Herrera. Both provided the opportunity to see behind the glamor into how a fashion house actually runs. In 2003 she stepped out of the classroom and into the work force, landing jobs at: Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. After seven years of working in the industry, Chideya decided in 2010 to spend the summer with her parents in Ottawa. While there she realized she was ready to design her own label – Demoyo, meaning my “My Hearts Desire.” The inspiration for her first collection came from spending time with her mother, Mazano, and it is named in her honor. “She's a very powerful woman and I wouldn't be where I am without her.” Her line consists of cocktaillength dresses, skinny pants and jackets. Her mother's strength is seen in the bold, vivid color palette that include Tangerine, Regal Blue and Golden Forestry and in the daring silhouettes in her current collection. The designer's personal favorite piece from this season’s lineup is the Tangerine Tulip Dress. It is conservative from the front with a high neckline and small cap sleeves, but when you turn around it is completely backless with four sweeping layers on the skirt. D moyo is for “...a woman that's strong enough to wear something that's stunning and fits beautifully. It's about the ability to celebrate yourself and also a celebration of all women.” Chideya was born in Zimbabwe and lived in Sweden, London, Paris, New York and Ottawa. This global experience not only had an influence on her design aesthetic, but created a strong desire to give back. Her ultimate goal is to return to Zimb bwe to work and while there, strive to improve the lives of those around her. “There are all these amazing women who know how to sew, put things together, dye fabric, and no outlet for them to create their art or sell it.” She is also in negotiations with local mills to create the fabrics for her future collections as well as a line of amazing prints to be designed in collaboration with local artists. While the Demoyo brand will stay more European, these prints will be used to create a line of “magical” ga ments, bringing economic opportunity for all involved. As Paidemoyo Chideya works to complete her second collection, she always keeps in mind what is most important in life. “I love fashion. I love pretty things, but there's always so much more to life than just what we see on the surface. The bottom line for me is to be there doing exactly what I am supposed to do, helping as many people as I can along the way and living the best and highest life I can.” Well said. Laura Siegel Untamed and Unexpected by Marilyn R. Wilson

Although she only debuted her first collection in may 2010, designer laura siegel has been making waves from coast-to-coast with her new take on Eco fashions. Originally from Toronto, Canada, this talented artist now resides in New York. Here she works in her studio to create sustainable fashions that breathe a new life into the industry. There is nothing ho-hum about her unique point of view, no hints at yoga wear. The garments are organic and full of life, taking Eco garments to the next level. Siegel began to garner attention even while a student at New York’s prestigious Parsons School of Design. She won numerous awards; did internships both locally and internationally including Megan Park, Life with Bird, Yigal Azrouel, Luca Luca and Arthur Menconca; and spent a semester studying at London’s Central Saint Martin. At graduation, she was nominated for the Designer of the Year Award. Her collection was displayed in Saks Fifth Avenue and sold at Debut Boutique in Soho. September 2010 Italian Vogue cited Siegel as one of Vogue Talent’s emerging designers. In November 2010, she flew to the West Coast to participate in Vancouver Fashion Week. Her collection of deconstructed, raw garments and gorgeous chunky hand knits was not only a hit with both the local fashion industry and media, but she was honoured with the Rising Star Award. For a year after graduation, Siegel chose to travel the world. She not only absorbed the life stories and philosophies of those she met, but spent time learning from craftsmen in smaller communities: a knitter in Thailand, embroiderers in Sapa and a leather smith in Hoi An. Back in New York, these experiences provided artistic inspiration. “I took these images, memories and new ways of life I had experienced and implemented them into the process of building a collection.” Hand looms were created out of dining room chairs. Hours were spent experimenting with natural sources such as herbs, nut shells and flowers to develop her “bible” of dyes. A metal crafting class added new dimensions by allowing her to create her own accessories. Everything is made by hand – from dying, to weaving, to sewing, to accessories – while she labours to keep every part of the process sustainable. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. Even if six of one style are ordered, they are all subtly different. Siegel’s design process is as organic as the garments she creates. “After sketching, I will typically look at my sketch while experimenting with textile manipulation and shape on the body, focusing on raw, natural ways to finish seams and edges.” The final product is a sensual collection of easy-to-wear pieces you can layer that have a strong connection to the natural world – untamed and unexpected. The coming months promise to be exciting for Siegel. She is heading overseas to spend some time in Asia where she hopes to collaborate with other artists on her Spring 2012 collection. At the same time she is looking to improve the prospects of those living in impoverished areas. “I hope to help alleviate poverty in South India and Southeast Asia by working with organizations that teach new skills and give employment. One I am really excited about a a natural dye plantation that teaches the handicapped natural dye methods and the art or harvesting dyes.” The fashion world is holding it’s breath in anticipation, waiting to see how this socially conscious, rising talent will evolve over the coming years. She is the one to watch, and you can be sure whatever direction she takes it will be innovative. For more information please visit her website at www.laurasiegelcollection.com.

Giving Back: ART OF HOROLOGY

STEVEN RICHARDSON, Founder of the Art of Horology Project, is bringing one of the only watchmaking programs to be offered to children in the United States to the Benjamin Banneker Academy in Brooklyn. Benjamin Banneker is known for creating the first wooden clock. He did this by taking apart and examining the machines and gears of a pocket watch. Twelve inner city kids were chosen for a tuition-free 8-week program learning the theory and practical maintenance of Quartz watches. The children will have the opportunity to assist in the making of actual watches that will be sold to the public.

Watch (IW) both having donated education materials such as books, magazines, and as well as given access to history making watch experts. Steven Richardson, a native of Baltimore Mar yland began his journey in 1995 as a jewelry designer of pieces made from gold, silver and precious stones. He traveled the world to places such as Thailand, Japan and Brazil to continue his education of gemology. Upon returning back to the US, Steven had a new fascination with timepieces and studied horology under a master watchmaker in NYC. It is this skill that he is obliged to share with others. Steven is also the owner of The Nkiru Watch Company, established in 2000. Richardson develops one-of-a-kind and limited edition timepieces, taking him sometimes up to two months to create one piece. His distinguished clientele include Maya Angelou, Malik Yoba, Keith Robinson and Ovie Mughelli. The diamonds and semi-precious stones found in his Red Tear Collection are certified non-conflict gems. Through his love for watchmaking and new fundraising initiatives, Richardson continues to move forward his vision for exposing young people to the world of horology.

The curriculum at the school will increase the students dexterity as well as help them increase their math and science skills. Ms. Abdul-Karim is very supportive of the watchmaking course and has donated a school workshop and $1000 to the program. Danny Simmons, Chair of the New York State Council of Arts, as well as an artist and philanthropist, has also supported the program with time and money since its inception in 2008. Additional sponsors include the world leading auction house, Antiquorum Auctioneers and the world leading watch magazine, International
