The role of railroad train dispatchers is to direct and coordinate the movement of trains on the railroads. The job of railroad train dispatcher includes dynamic decision-making. That is why it is very important that a train dispatcher has good analytical, communication, and reasoning skills. To become a railroad train dispatcher, you need to enroll in a railroad dispatcher training program. The railroad dispatcher training program is a 6-month program that includes both classroom courses and on-the-job training. Many community and technical colleges offer train dispatcher training courses. Union Pacific, CSX Transportation, BNSF Railway, Kansas City Southern, Canadian Pacific, and Canadian National have their own dispatchers training courses as each carrier has its own unique operating style.

ELIGIBILITY The eligibility criteria to become a train dispatcher is:

You must be at least 18 years old You must have a high school diploma or GED certificate You must have a valid driver's license You should have a typing speed of 25 average net words per minute You should be computer literate

To pursue higher positions, you can also pursue degree courses. However, for the entry-level jobs of US railroad service, you can easily become a certified train dispatcher by enrolling in a certified railroad dispatcher training program.
