INTERVIEW

Mike Tuffy CEO, Optimas International Mike Tuffy is CEO of Optimas International, a global supplier of fasteners and supply chain solutions to the rail and transportation sectors. He joined the business at 16 on the warehouse floor and has spent 40 years within the organisation, progressing through roles in procurement, supply chain and international business development across the UK, Europe and the United States before being appointed CEO in 2022.

Sam Sherwood-Hale spoke to Mike Tuffy, CEO of Optimas International, about the Exponent acquisition, preparing for Great British Railways, and the growing appetite for component standardisation across the rail supply chain SSH: How did you get started in the industry, and when did you join the company? MT: I joined the business when I was just 16, starting on the warehouse floor picking, packing and shipping products. That handson experience at the heart of our business was invaluable and gave me the solid foundation on which I’ve built a 40-year career within the same organisation. In the four decades since, I’ve progressed through a number of leadership roles across procurement and supply chain, commercial leadership and international business development. I’ve spent much of my career leading teams across the UK, Europe and the United States, helping grow the business while building long-term partnerships with customers and suppliers. In 2022, I was appointed CEO of Optimas International. Having spent my entire career within the organisation, I bring a unique perspective to the role. I’ve seen firsthand how much both our organisation and the industry has evolved, and how the partnerships that endure are built on trust earned over many years. My experience gives me a deep understanding of the operational realities and strategic challenges our customers face, and that perspective is particularly important as we continue to invest in high-growth markets like rail, where relationships and programmes often span decades. 40

‘Rail is a long-term industry. Customers need stability as much as they need capability.’ SSH: What does the Exponent acquisition change for your UK rail and transportation customers in concrete terms? MT: The Exponent acquisition doesn’t change the day-to-day experience for our existing rail and transportation customers. Our people, relationships and commitment to delivering for our customers remain the same. What is changing is happening behind the scenes. Backing from Exponent gives us greater financial strength and supports long-term investment. We’re investing in our engineering capability, technology, inventory and people so we can continue to be well positioned to help customers simplify increasingly complex supply chains as programmes grow in scale. Rail is a long-term industry. Customers need stability as much as they need capability. The combination of local expertise, global scale and long-term

investment puts us in an even stronger position to support the sector well into the future. SSH: As Great British Railways consolidates the network, do you expect procurement and supplier relationships to shift, and how is Optimas preparing for that? MT: Great British Railways represents one of the biggest changes to the UK rail industry in decades. I expect procurement to become more coordinated, with greater emphasis on long-term value, supply chain resilience and standardisation. Suppliers will need to demonstrate not just competitive pricing, but quality, traceability, engineering expertise and the ability to support programmes throughout their lifecycle. The industry estimates that around twothirds of GBR’s spending will flow through the supply chain. Suppliers who can prove quality, traceability and value over the life of an asset will come out ahead as preferred partners. That’s where Optimas International is incredibly strong. We’re RISQS registered, members of the Railway Industry Association and we already help customers simplify supply chains through standardisation, managed inventory and rigorous quality processes. As the industry evolves, those capabilities become even more valuable.
