RIDC Melton

RIDC Melton is a purpose built test track for the testing of rolling stock, plant, on-track machines, infrastructure and equipment. The facility has been designed to support high and low speed testing of vehicles and infrastructure using 25kV (11 miles) overhead line equipment and 3rd/4th rail DC equipment.

RIDC Melton has two separate test tracks, high speed test facility between Melton Junction and Edwalton, incorporating 13 miles of track up to 125mph and a slow speed test track from Old Dalby to Stanton tunnel, having 4 miles of track capable of up to 60mph.

RIDC Tuxford

RIDC Tuxford spurs off the Robin Hood line, between Thoresby Junction and High Marnham, it is 10 miles of single line test track with a 3 mile double section, with testing speeds capabilities of up to 75mph. It comprises a short section of non-live 25kV type catenary, a short section of non-live 3rd/4th rail. It offers a perfectly suited facility to develop rail vehicles, technology, equipment and to deliver operator training and competence assessments.

CURRENT PROJECTS BCIMO is a partner on one of the West Midlands Innovation Accelerator programmes, together with lead partner Connected Places Catapult and Coventry University: The Clean Futures Accelerator focuses on the area of Clean Tech for the transport sector. Over the course of the next two years, 40 SMEs (20 per year) will join a 6-month, industry challenge-led accelerator where they will receive up to £50K to trial their rail or automotive solutions at the VLRNIC or Coventry University respectively. The first cohort of winners are on site now Part of the remit for the Clean Futures Accelerator is that it becomes sustainable at the end of the two-year funded programme. This is where the Commercial Investment Hub will come in. The platform, facilitated by BCIMO, will bring together Innovators, Challenge Setters and Investors to accelerate innovation to commercialisation

Testing Philosophy ▪ GCRE is open to rapid testing of new and non-certified products and systems ▪ No ‘traditional’ UK railway certification or ‘test’ certification needed to test at GCRE ▪ A ‘Risk Managed’ philosophy ▪ Trials of not yet certified products and systems ▪ Trials of new innovations and technology not yet described in standards or recognised norms ▪ GCRE operating controls will be by; ▪ Review of certification where available (especially sector technology transfer) ▪ Review for any product of its functionality operating characteristics, failure modes and basic risks ▪ For ‘higher’ risk products a daily review of condition, monitoring data, and rate of change from previous reviews

‘Validation’ and Certification • What is Validation?

• Can mean validation to existing norms and standards but has no intended defined marking • Can mean certification/homologation as compliant to standards and ‘bringing into service’ (certification for this presentation) • GCRE anticipates • Working with clients who bring their regular certification bodies • ‘partnering’ with authorised Certification companies and bodies, on site with clients and in conjunction with appropriate regulatory bodies. Discussions as to the ‘model’ to used ongoing • Space for facilities for certification companies allowed for in the design of GCRE • Recognition of 4 streams of validation • UK manufactured for UK use and needing UK certification • UK manufactured for overseas use and needing certification relevant to planned use (UKCA, CE, ISO etc) • Outside UK manufactured for UK use and needing UK certification • Outside UK manufactured for overseas use and needing certification relevant to planned use (UKCA, CE, ISO etc

Digital: ▪ GCRE has started by placing all its design and build contracts with BIM2 system and data requirement ▪ GCRE has used a modelling company to build our first basic 3D rendering of the site ▪ Migrating the BIM data, System designs forward into a full Digital Twin of the site ▪ A complete digital backbone around the site will enable easy integration of monitoring and sensoring system technology into the Twin. Thereby connecting the physical world with the Virtual ▪ GCRE will be able to operate the site (day to day activities) using the Digital Twin The above enables the GCRE to be the ‘Hardware in the Loop’ of an innovation, R & D and certification facility. The Digiatl Twin enabling: continuous monitoring, linking simulators and virtual models, remote operation and control, automation, to a new forms of digital certification jointly based on physical and digital evidence

Training and Development ▪ Training on new technologies is essential for successful bring into service and then for operations and maintenance – so regularly forgotten!

▪ GCRE will facilitate the support of innovators in the high TRL identification and development of training, operating and maintenance needs ▪ A core part of the UKRINN’2’ funding will enable high TRL development of university research that’s turns to application need; training, operational processes and maintenance needs ▪ GCRE is developing a ‘railway’ training capability again in partnership with competent providers

▪ Apprentice Level 1-7 in conjunction with local universities and colleges ▪ Railway specialist skills in conjunction with providers
