Introduction by Darren Caplan, Chief Executive, Railway Industry Association (RIA)

An unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate expertise, exchange ideas, build partnerships, and explore the technologies shaping the future of rail. On behalf of the Railway Industry Association (RIA), I am delighted to welcome rail suppliers to the UK Pavilion at InnoTrans 2026, and to have the opportunity in this publication to showcase the talented and innovative organisations that make up the UK rail supply chain. RIA is proud to support all of the country’s UK-based companies as they build connections, demonstrate capability and pursue opportunities across both domestic and international markets. Whether you are a regular visitor or attending for the first time, InnoTrans remains the world’s leading international trade fair for transport technology, bringing together thousands of exhibitors from across the globe. It provides an unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate expertise, exchange ideas, build partnerships and explore the technologies that will shape the future of rail. The long-term drivers of demand for rail remain strong, with industry growth averaging three per cent per year globally. Urbanisation, population growth, digitalisation and decarbonisation are all reinforcing the case for greater investment in rail. Around the world, significant programmes are underway to modernise existing networks and develop new ones, creating substantial opportunities for

suppliers with the expertise, products and services needed to deliver these projects successfully. Major programmes like the Elizabeth line and Transpennine Route Upgrade continue to highlight the innovation, expertise and delivery capability that exist throughout the UK rail sector. This year’s event comes at a pivotal time for the UK railway industry, as the establishment of Great British Railways (GBR) marks a significant milestone for the future of the UK’s rail network. The creation of a single directing mind presents an opportunity to deliver a more integrated system, providing greater clarity on long-term priorities and investment. GBR has the ability to strengthen collaboration between infrastructure managers, operators and suppliers, whilst supporting innovation and creating a more stable environment for investment. A clear, long-term strategy for the sector, which is expected in autumn 2027, can further enhance the position of UK rail suppliers both domestically and in export markets. One of the great strengths of InnoTrans has always been the opportunity it creates for networking, collaboration and

knowledge-sharing. The conversations that begin here often lead to new partnerships, new markets and new solutions that help deliver better railways around the world. Rail remains one of the most effective means of enhancing connectivity and supporting economic growth. So on behalf of everyone at RIA, I would like to wish you a successful and productive week at InnoTrans 2026. And I hope your participation helps generate new opportunities for your business and showcases the very best of the UK rail supply sector on the global stage. Kind regards Darren Caplan, Chief Executive, RIA

Department for Transport

GBR will provide the day-to-day operational leadership for the railway, by bringing together the management of track and train under one organisation. And it will be run, day-to-day, by rail professionals.

Why the need for rail reform?

The UK is bringing train operators and track maintenance together through the creation of a single body, Great British Railways (GBR). GBR is an opportunity to build a simpler, more accountable railway that secures a railway that delivers real improvements for passengers, customers and the communities it serves. Reform of this scale will always generate discussion about how it should be delivered and what shape GBR should take. But the ambition is clear: to deliver genuine, lasting change for millions of people across our rail network. A thriving, competitive rail supply chain, both domestic and international, will continue to be an essential component of the railway. That’s because the supply chain provides the scale, experience, reach, knowledge, innovation and expertise needed to maintain, renew and develop the UK’s railways. The reforms are working to deliver a railway that is designed for the customer, focused on being safe, reliable,

8

InnoTrans 2026

and sustainable, driving long-term thinking and a “whole-system” approach to delivery. It’s not reform for its own sake, but a railway that delivers demonstrably better services, stronger freight connections and greater value for the communities that depend on it. GBR will provide the day-to-day operational leadership for the railway, by bringing together the management of track and train under one organisation. And it will be run, day-to-day, by rail professionals. So why the need for rail reform? Sometimes when things go wrong it isn’t clear who is responsible. This is not right. GBR will also be the directing mind behind the network as a whole, driving the best possible value out of the billions of pounds invested in it, optimising its use and tailoring services and resources to where they work best for customers. GBR delivers a practical and pragmatic solution to what has become an increasingly

fragmented, duplicated and often poorly coordinated railway. It’s a solution that puts passengers and customers first, increases accountability, and shifts the emphasis from contract management to the recognition that public transport should, first and foremost, be about serving the public. And the private sector will continue to be a key player in this simpler, more efficient model. GBR will continue to draw on the skills, knowledge and capabilities the private sector has to offer, through commercial partnerships and agreements. Even as a publicly owned company, with responsibilities to the UK taxpayer, GBR will still be a more attractive platform for the private sector than it is now. Instead of the convoluted, multi-organisational set-up that complicates and slows down decisions, GBR will, as one organisation, be able to take joined-up decisions across both track and

Department for Transport train – the “whole-system” approach that will streamline processes, improve efficiency and speed up decision-making. This will instil a strong sense of confidence the private sector wants and needs, as well as providing the confidence, efficiency and value for money that the taxpayer deserves and expects. It will be a model that fosters long-term stability for suppliers, by providing a platform – along with the Government’s Long-Term Strategy for Rail and its Rolling Stock and Infrastructure Strategy – for longstanding partnerships with companies, as well as the building blocks for innovation that will benefit both the private sector and customers equally. It will be a model that ensures strong commercial relationships remain at the heart of a transformed UK rail network. One example of this will be the statutory duty for GBR to promote rail freight and to have a rail freight growth target set by the Secretary of State. On top of this, GBR will also create a new strategic freight unit to act as a single point of contact for stakeholders and customers. That means giving freight

customers a clearer voice, simpler access to the network, and greater confidence that rail can support their long-term needs. Network Rail already spends around £8 billion a year in the private sector, and around 60 per cent of GBR’s expenditure could be spent in the private sector.

development, such as the nearly 34,000 homes unlocked by East West Rail alone. We remain committed to harnessing private investment and driving growth in a reformed rail sector under the single leadership of GBR working closely with our private sector partners to secure the best outcomes for passengers, customers, taxpayers and suppliers, while supporting the communities the railway serves. Richard Goodman Director General

”

The creation of GBR will also generate further opportunities in the wider economy for the private sector. Development of unused brownfield rail sites will be a key part of rail reform. Investment in our railway is already supporting a huge amount of

Multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Aarvee explains why today’s infrastructure projects call for a practical, integrated approach.

Keeping complex projects simple

Images: Shutterstock

Infrastructure projects have always been complex. What has changed is the pace at which they need to be delivered, the volume of information they generate, and the number of specialist disciplines involved in bringing them to life. Whether it’s a rail enhancement scheme, a new power network or a major water project, success rarely comes down to one design or one engineering decision. It depends on hundreds of decisions being made by different teams, at different stages, all working towards the same outcome. That’s often where the real challenge lies. Good engineering isn’t simply about producing designs that meet technical standards. It’s about understanding how those designs interact, how they will be built and how they will perform once they’re in service. The best solutions are rarely the most complicated. More often, they’re the ones that bring clarity to complexity. At Aarvee, that’s our guiding philosophy. An integrated approach As a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy, we support clients across rail, power, water and digital infrastructure. They can tap into our expertise in signalling, telecommunications, electrical and power systems, track, civils, structures, geospatial services and digital engineering. Each discipline has its own role to play, but it’s how they come together that ultimately determines a project’s success. Taking an integrated approach from the outset helps identify potential issues before they become costly problems on site. It encourages better communication between teams, reduces design clashes and provides clients with greater confidence as projects move from concept through to delivery. In an industry where

26

InnoTrans 2026

programmes are often under pressure, those early conversations can make a significant difference later. Local leadership, global reach That practical mindset has shaped Aarvee since the company was established in 1989. Today, our UK business combines experienced local leadership with the capability of a global engineering team of more than 3,500 professionals, supporting projects in over 20 countries. This means clients benefit not just from agile, responsive service, but from the kind of technical expertise needed to deliver projects of every size and complexity level. Practical designs, supported by technology Being practical also means recognising that good design doesn’t stop at the drawing board. Engineering decisions should reflect the realities of construction, future maintenance and day-to-day operation. A technically compliant solution is only part of the picture; it also needs to be deliverable, efficient and designed with the people who will build and operate it in mind. Technology is helping to make that easier. Building Information Modelling (BIM), geospatial data and digital engineering tools provide better visibility across projects, helping teams coordinate designs and identify potential issues earlier. Used well, these technologies improve collaboration and support informed decision-making throughout the project lifecycle. They are valuable because they strengthen engineering judgement, not because they replace it. Addressing new challenges The rail industry continues to evolve, bringing new expectations around performance, sustainability and resilience. Meeting those

expectations requires engineering partners who can adapt, collaborate and provide solutions that work in practice as well as on paper. It also requires an appreciation that no single discipline delivers infrastructure on its own. Successful projects are the product of many different specialists working towards a common goal. At Aarvee, collaboration underpins every project we deliver. By combining multidisciplinary expertise with a focus on constructability and coordinated delivery, we help clients manage complexity without losing sight of what matters most: delivering safe, practical and dependable infrastructure. As we look ahead to InnoTrans 2026, the conversations shaping the future of infrastructure are likely to centre on innovation, digital technology and the transition to more sustainable transport networks. Those developments are undoubtedly important, but the fundamentals remain the same. Successful projects still rely on good planning, clear communication and engineering that works beyond the drawing board. Keeping complex projects simple is not about making them less ambitious. It’s about bringing together the right people, the right expertise and the right approach to deliver infrastructure that performs today and is ready for tomorrow.

With FAIRTIQ, there’s no need to plan ahead or know which ticket to buy. Just swipe once, hop on board and enjoy the journey. FAIRTIQ will make sure that you always have the right ticket at hand no matter where you go and how many times you switch modes of transport. Images: FAIRTIQ

The easiest public transport ticket for travellers Swiss ticketing specialist FAIRTIQ celebrated its 10th anniversary in April. This marked 10 years of addressing a core question: how can we make it easier for customers to buy a ticket? A decade ago, our answer was the world’s first app-based pay-as-you-go (PAYG) ticketing solution. This made ticketing so much simpler - no queues, seamless interchange between different modes of transport, no expensive infrastructure requirements for operators, no regional or zonal borders, and no fear of accidentally forgetting to tap out. All powered by a single swipe on the traveller’s mobile phone. Mobile PAYG – also known as Digital PAYG – has rocketed in popularity since. Today FAIRTIQ is active in over a dozen countries, working with 100+ transport operator and authority partners. A household name in much of Europe, FAIRTIQ recently surpassed a major landmark with 400m all-time customer journeys made using our technology. But technology does not stand still, and 10 years on we continue to innovate. Today the question has become: what if we could make travel possible with zero swipes required? This year we announced the pilot phase of ‘Be-in, Be-out’ (BIBO), a truly seamless travel concept. The app automatically detects when a passenger is travelling on public transport and issues a valid ticket, eliminating any need for a manual swipe. BIBO gives occasional travellers the same easy access to travel as season-ticket holders. Likewise travel becomes easier for seniors or people with disabilities, because minimising interaction makes public transport more accessible for all.

28

InnoTrans 2026

Following ‘Privacy by Design’ principles, FAIRTIQ has engineered BIBO to guarantee data protection at all times. Data is primarily collected and processed locally on the user’s smartphone. Non-transport-related data is deleted. Only when the app detects an actual public transport journey is the relevant data securely transmitted to FAIRTIQ for route calculation and billing. The feature is also optimised to ensure daily use without excessive battery drain.

by 106 leading “ Trusted transport companies around the world, over 400,000,000 trips

”

Development of BIBO and market testing has started with an alliance of 10 public transport partners in Switzerland. In addition, through European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) grants, another commercial BIBO project will be launched in collaboration with Germany’s RMV and Czechia’s KOVED transport authorities. Our ultimate goal is expanding BIBO technology throughout Europe. At the same time as pushing the boundaries of travel technology, we are also extending our solutions to ensure no customer is left behind. In Denmark, FAIRTIQ has been technology provider for Rejsekort’s nationwide multi-modal Mobile PAYG ticketing system since 2024. Today more than 85 per cent of all public transport journeys across the country – on buses, trains, trams and ferries – are made using Rejsekort’s Mobile PAYG app powered by FAIRTIQ.

But in any market, some travellers are either unable or unwilling to adopt app-based ticketing. In Denmark we estimate this applies to around 10 per cent of passengers, including some of society’s most vulnerable people the unbanked, children or older travellers who don’t use mobile phones. While FAIRTIQ and Rejsekort embrace a digital-first approach, we recognise the equal importance of ticketing for all. That’s why this year we launched Basiskort: a complementary card that offers tap-in/tap-out travel. App-based ticketing remains the default, keeping infrastructure requirements low – with so few users, only one tap point is needed per station instead of at every ticketing gate. And the card links into the same back-office system for the transport authority, also powered by FAIRTIQ. One ticketing ecosystem, with a cutting-edge seamless offer for the majority of travellers, and an accessible simplified version for those who need it. What was originally a dream we aspired to 10 years ago, is a tangible reality today.

TOTAL ENGINEERING. TOTAL CONFIDENCE. Fort Vale’s RailTyt range has a 100% vertically integrated manufacturing process, giving us complete control over quality and class-leading safety - something third-party supply chains simply cannot match. By operating our own design teams, foundry, machining, assembly, and pressure testing facilities. Every single detail, down to the metallurgical compound of a valve body, is verified in-house. Our Railtyt range is built primarily from 316 stainless steel as standard, massively decreasing corrosion, preventing leaks, and maximising total asset lifespan while minimising M&R down time. Our Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software yields some of the highest flow rates and lowest turbulence metrics on the market, facilitating faster loading/unloading cycles for rail operators. Our components are engineered to fit standard drilling patterns flawlessly, making fleet upgrades seamless and trouble-free - we take the time, so you don’t have the trouble.
