THE BATMAN Hunter Safchik (‘27) reviews The Batman (2022) starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz.

The Batman was a very thrilling and exhilarating movie, though it had some missteps, I thought the movie was solid. One thing I particularly liked was the character of The Riddler. The Riddler was a well-played character who may not be iconic, but fit perfectly into the movie. The Riddler is a mad psychopath who wanted fame in the world, so he did so by becoming a murderer. This really fits into the movie’s gritty message and mood. It also makes the movie thrilling and jawdropping.

Secondly, I thought The Batman was cast perfectly, particularly Robert Pattinson as the lead. Pattinson’s style of The Batman was a perfect fit for the dark and sad movie. On the other hand, I thought Catwoman, played by Zoe Kravitz, was a poor character who did not act like the original black cat of past Catwoman portrayals. Her outfit was awful, and her personality was not close to the original black cat that everyone loves. However, what I did like about the Catwoman was the way her character was brought into the plot.

Catwoman being Carmine Falcon’s daughter brought suspense often and created the climax of the movie.

In conclusion, I thought this movie was a solid and thrilling ride, which carved its own unique story and style from a familiar and beloved character. Though it was not perfect, I overall like Pattinson and the Riddler, while Catwoman and some other characters did not play the part exceptionally. In total, I rate this movie an 8.5/10.

ELTON JOHN Sir Elton Hercules John’s real name is Reginald Dwight. He was born in England. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1998. His journey in music began when he first played the piano at age three and continued as he began his first band when he was fifteen. During his 57 year career, Elton performed at 3,500 concerts.

Elton also runs the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

HARRY’S HOME

Harry Styles returned with a bang with his new single “As It Was,” teasing his third solo album.

On March 23, Harry Styles fans lost their minds with the announcement of a third album coming out on May 20th, Harry’s House. The announcement came with the cryptic Instagram account “You Are Home,” which posted a door opening to different images for 13 days, each representing one of the 13 tracks on the album. Confirming fan theories, after the thirteenth door post came “As It Was,” a new single and music video from Styles.

Styles’ music video provided lots for fans to dig into and decode. The video showed Styles spinning in a sequined red jumpsuit with matching nails and coat, accompanied by a woman in a blue jumpsuit who keeps being pulled away from him. The video reminded many Internet users of indie pop bands of the 2010s like Two Door Cinema Club and Vampire Weekend.

“I like the music video very much because it was really creative, and I like how he incorporated the colors blue and red,” said Olivia Rodriguez-Bracco (‘26).

Fans now recognized the Easter eggs Styles left at throughout his tour for 2019’s The Fine Line.

For his show on Halloween, Styles dressed up as Dorothy of The Wizard of Oz and clicked his heels, as Dorothy does in the film while saying “Take me home” — paralleling Styles’ new album title. The

“I really liked the new album cover because I felt it was unique and creative the way that he is right side up but the home is upside down,” said Mariana Carvalho (‘26).

Fans are keeping their eyes peeled for any more hints from Styles as they anxiously await the album.

“In the trailer he first posted about releasing a new album, the camera shows the theater with just one person sitting in the very back,” said Evelyn Kelly (‘26). “I saw some people speculate that was Louis Tomlinson, his former One Direction bandmate.”

Until May 20, fans excitedly discuss and speculate about Harry’s Home, its subject matter and its tracks.

“I am very excited to hear the new album because Harry hasn’t released music since 2019, and As it Was was so great that I am excited to see what else the album will have,” said Andrea ParilliGaskin (‘26).

ONLINE One of the ways that people like to shop is online.

Whether you like chain stores or small businesses, you can always search for amazing pieces from the comfort of your computer.

“Sometimes in stores they don’t have your right size, but online you can find your size and send it to your house,” said Ellie Schnur (‘28).

“I’m too lazy to go to a store,” said Elisa Senior (‘26).

Without the worry of what the store offers in person, online shopping lets you see all items a company offers at once.

“I like to shop at Hollister, and Lululemon, for when I play tennis,” said Valentina Gonzalez (‘27).

Shopping at the mall is really popular among students.

Some stores you can find in the mall are Hollister, PacSun, Abercrombie and H&M. “I like to shop at the mall because I get good exercise, and I get to talk with my homies,” said Samuel Dickman (‘27).

The mall also has food courts, movie theaters, and other activities for entertainment in between shopping. People can sit, enjoy a nice coffee with their friends, or go to watch a movie. Shopping in person allows people to go straight to the store and try items on before purchasing.

“At the mall, there’s a lot of stores that you can go to, and you don’t have to drive to so many different places,” said Sophia Harari (‘26). “I just like to look around, and buy something if I like it.”

Shopping locally at boutiques is loved by many students in Gulliver. People love shopping locally because it is better than being at home on a computer or cell phone.

“I feel like it is more fun than just staring at a computer,” said Eva Schnur (‘28).

“I prefer local boutiques, because it is small and there’s better clothing, and better quality,” said Mika Ringel (‘27).

Sometimes people may think that shopping locally can be hard because the store is smaller with fewer options; however this does not have to be a problem because a lot of the time local boutiques have well-made and unique clothes. One of the popular shops in the area is Trend Boutique.

“It has cute and comfy clothes that are wearable all 12 year round,” said Stella Balestrazzi (‘27).

“I like skateboarding because you never run out of tricks to learn.”

WORDLE Seemingly unassuming word game Wordle took the campus and the nation by storm this year.

Wordle, the word game sensation, exploded in popularity in late December, only 3 months after its initial release in October. In every corner of campus, you can find students and teachers plugging away on the word puzzle game, whispering letter guesses, and celebrating when they show up green. Where did this Wordle craze even begin?

John Wardle created Wordle in early 2013. His prototype then had more than one Wordle per day, where people could play all day in infinite matches. However, Wordle took off when more constraints created a more meaningful challenge for the player: with a new time constraint element and one puzzle a day, people competed to see who can get the Wordle in a shorter amount of time.

“I like Wordle because new ones are posted daily and because they are all different and fun,” said Teo Duailibi Ribeiro (‘27).

Since the explosion of Wordle, there have been many knock-offs of Wordle. There have been Wordle knock-offs that use a similar daily puzzle format, like Worldle, in which players guess the country from its shape. There have also been games like CrossWordle which have gained popularity, combining Wordle and traditional crossword puzzles.

The spinoff games from Wordle have even entered niche subjects and interests– take Taylordle, a Wordle puzzle all about Taylor Swift. Some Wordle players have even started challenging themselves within normal Wordle, testing out Doutrigordle– a game where players have to get 32 Wordles at once, only getting 37 guesses.

“I usually get the wordle in four or five tries since words are more complex than others and when they are I sometimes don’t get at all,” said Alfonso Lanseros (‘27).

Wordle got even more competitive when the New York Times bought Wordle for a whopping $1M. Daily players have declined since the New York Times’ purchase of Wordle– many claims that the puzzles have gotten too hard. However, Wordle’s word list has not been added to since the initial creation of the game. The New York Times has also stated that they even removed some words from the word list that seemed too obscure, making Wordle easier in theory.

“I usually get the Wordle in four or five tries since words are more complex than others and when they are I sometimes don’t get it at all,” said Santiago Mendoza (‘27). “I sometimes compete with my friends to see who can get it in the least amount of guesses.”

PRIME SLIME Snoop Slimes’ outrageous designs became a campus obsession and the slime of choice, from ASMR TikTok videos to relaxing at home.

2016 introduced the world to the satisfying goo called slime– in the years since, slime has only exploded in popularity and creativity. Slime not only makes it a satisfying toy for children to squeeze, stretch, and play with, but also a great sensory relief for adults. In February 2017, Jungmin Kang opened Snoop Slimes at just 13 years old to sell aesthetically pleasing slimes inspired by everything from Starbucks to mint chocolate chip ice cream to rubber ducks. Since then, Kang’s entrepreneurial skills and ideas have taken over the slime industry, with new batches selling out instantly on her site.

Whether it be Strawberry Boba or Mango Juice or any other variety, students prefer Snoop Slimes as their slime of choice.

“My favorite Snoop Slime is Duck in the Pond,” said Veda Sharma (7). “Snoop Slimes is great quality slime.”

MEADOW

Meadow by Drift illustrates a poetic landscape. This is the first exhibit in SuperBlue. The room is decorated with opening and closing flowers hanging from the ceiling that represent blooming.

UNIVERSE OF WATER

Universe of Water, by transcending boundaries, is a room that begins as a moving painting of a vertical rainstorm. It then changes into flowers and humans. It is a lesson in humans’ ability to resurrect nature when we try, as touching the wall brings blooms to desolate spaces.

PROLIFERATING IMMENSE LIFE

Proliferating Immense Life — A Whole Year per Year by James Turrell is a color changing room where no pictures are allowed. The colors vary from pink to purple, yellow, blue, and more. Its purpose is for people to be quiet and relax for a few minutes.

FOREST OF US Forest of Us by Es Devlin is an interactive maze. This experience begins with a short film about comparing the human condition to life in the forest. Then the door opens to a maze. With all of its mirrors, lights, and narrow staircases, it is a perfect place to take pictures.

MASSLESS CLOUDS

Massless Clouds between sculpture and life by Teamlab is an interactive art experience, with foaming bubbles floating through the room. This haze of white bubbles represents clouds. This experience is more commonly known as the “Cloud Room.”

BEING A BALL GIRL AT THE

MIAMI OPEN

Sienna Marinelli (‘26) discussed the ins and outs of working the tennis courts.

I was a ballgirl for the Miami Open. Being right next to the players felt unreal. As a ball girl, I loved wearing the bright orange outfits and going to our assigned courts for our 40-minute shifts. When I first got on the court, I was nervous to mess up– however, I was even more excited to be right next to the tennis players I usually watch on TV. Ballgirling for all of my idols in the tennis world is a gift, because I actually play tennis for sport.

Before I became a ball girl, I had to try out. Trying out was hard work. The first day, they had all different coaches observing us to see if each person could do all of the steps: running, rolling the ball, and presenting to the player. So many people of all ages tried out - probably over 600 people!

There were three of the five tryout sessions in order to be eligible to become a ballgirl. After those sessions, I waited for an email stating whether or not I was fit to be a ballgirl. Once I was claimed to be fit, I attended two ball-person training sessions.

The first day of the Miami Open, each ballperson worked a day shift or night shift. I worked a day shift from 8am to 7pm. The last day as a ballgirl, I had the night shift. After a 40-minute shift, I could enjoy the grounds, walking around with friends and getting food. After another 40 minutes, I returned to the court I was originally assigned. The two scariest matches I ballgirled for were Nick Kyrgios vs. Jannik Sinner and Feliciano López, Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Alexander Bublik, Andrey Golubev.

This experience was amazing to be close to real tennis players that I admire, and it also taught me great work ethic.

CONCERT LIFE

Concerts give us the chance to share in our favorite music with our favorite artists. With lots of venues available, Miami is a great city for a wide array of concerts, from pop to punk to rock to rap. When fans check out the tour dates and see their city, it’s a dream come true– you can listen to your music on a speaker, but the thrill and excitement of attending a concert is unreal. You can feel the music, the lights are flashing, people are screaming and the artist is right before your eyes. Gulliver students described the surreal experience of seeing their favorite artists live.

On Pajama Day, students wore any pajama of their choice-- most students wore plaid pants or sweatpants. “It was fun because everyone was wearing their pajamas and it was comfortable,” said Colin Vail (‘27).

On Zoom Attire day, students wore their uniform polo shirts on top and whatever they wanted to wear on bottom. “On Zoom Attire day, we just wore sweatpants,” said Alielle Ruiz (‘28).

White Out or Tie Dye let students wear either completely white clothes or tie-dye clothes. “Spirit week was really fun, because we got to dress up everyday,” said Siena de Maria (‘27). “My friends brought paint everyday, and we painted each other so it was really fun.”

On Twin/Group Day ,students got to pair up with another student or more and wear their choice of matching clothing. “It was fun-- we got to twin with Andrew, and it was cool seeing other people twinning and all the other guys,” said Pedro Jereissati (‘26). “I think it was just cool seeing how creative people got.”

On Raider Pride Day, students wore blue and white, school sprit colors, and then headed out to the field for carnival rides, obstacle courses, slides, churros, snow cones, barbecue and more. “I enjoyed Raider Pride day,” said Fabiana Barros (‘26). “It was my favorite day of the week, because we got to spend time with our friends at the Gulliver Yard, and take a break from school and really get to know people. We used the field as a place to have fun and eat and hangout with our friends. We painted our faces and expressed ourselves with our outfits.”

CHEERLEADERS

WIN COMPETITION On April 3, the Gulliver Middle School Cheerleading Team competed and won at the USCA National Cheerleading & Dance Championship in the non-tumbling category.

On April 3rd, the Middle School Cheerleading Team brought home first place in the USCA National Cheerleading & Dance Championship in the non-tumbling category. The girls competed against five other teams.

In both her first year on the team and at Gulliver Prep, Francisca Meirovich (‘28) said she is really proud of the big win. Meirovich has cheered for two years, in the past as a base and now as a flyer.

“I felt really proud and happy that I proved to people who said we wouldn’t win wrong,” said Meirovich.

“I am really proud of the team because our hard work paid off.”

In the weeks leading up to the competition, the team stretched and practiced their routine thoroughly – about 3 times full out each practice, including both the dance routine and the stunts. By the final week before competition, the girls practiced every day to build confidence and make sure they were ready.

When the big day arrived, the girls woke up early with both nerves and excitement and traveled to the event. Once they did hair and makeup and practiced, it was their turn on stage.

“I was nervous because it was my first time,” said flyer Mia Hall (‘27). “We got on and I knew what I was doing, but I was nervous that I wasn’t going to pull out or jump when I was supposed to.”

After their stunt shook during their performance, the girls’ nerves only grew. As they watched the other teams perform, they thought about the winners’ jackets they worked towards. Before the awards were announced, all the teams got together on the mat and danced.

Finally, the moment came– Gulliver Prep Middle School was the non-tumbling champion.

“We were shocked when we won,” said base Samiyah Causey (‘27). “I started crying.”

Coach Alexandra Rodriguez filmed their reaction to the win. ​​ “We all felt extremely happy,” said Rodriguez. “All the hard work that they put in as a team paid off in the end. As a coach, I felt so proud of this group of girls that made history for Gulliver Middle School Cheer.

They finally got to understand a quote I use very often, ‘The work is worth it.’”

For team eighth graders Sydney Spence (‘26) and Tess Templeton-Werner (‘26), the win was the conclusion to their time on the middle school team.

“It feels really good,” said Spence. “We put a lot of hard work into this.”

“I’m going to miss the people in cheer,” said Templeton-Werner. “I’m not going to Gulliver next year, but I definitely want to try and continue with cheer.”
