“On the cover I wore a red wig, red bandana, a red Miami Heat shirt, and red shorts. I chose to wear that because it would be my last spirit week in middle school and I wanted to go all out. Spirit week and color war day were super fun and the themes were really creative. Overall, it was really fun to see everyone dressed up and showing off their spirit especially in eighth grade.”

Golden Goose shoes are very popular shoes on campus. Students like to come to school and show off their beautiful stylish shoes. They are very comfy and go with every outfit you could ever imagine. You can wear them for going out with a dress, or even just with sweatpants and a hoodie.

OCTOBUDDY

Octobuddy is a recent trend that has gone viral all over school. Octobuddys are suction cups that stick to the back of your phone. This is a very useful trend. Octobuddys allows your phone to stick to walls and other surfaces, making it easier to take pictures and videos.

STANLEY

Stanleys are a very popular water bottle known for their rainbow of color options. Everywhere you look you see a Stanley cup. There are many types of Stanley cups such as quenchers, Iceflows, and tumblers. However, the tumbler cup is the one that went viral. The many colors they come in help express the owner’s style. “I love taking my Stanley to the beach; in the hot weather, it keeps my water cold,” said Julia Cardoso (7).

EMI JAY

Emi Jay clips have recently become popular hair accessories. It is a perfect accessory for school to show a side of your fashion since at Gulliver, uniforms are mandatory. “I like Emi Jay clips because I can match them to my everyday school uniform, to my different color shirts and my shoes,” said Ava Nullman (7).

ONE TEASPOON

One Teaspoon are the perfect shorts on many occasions. For example, in the summer, you could wear it over your bikini and still look stylish. These shorts are very comfortable and look good with anything. “I wear Teaspoons almost every day because they look very nice and are very comfortable to wear on any occasion,” said Valeria Finskaya (7).

TRIANGL

Triangl is a swimsuit brand that many people have bought for its unique patterns and good quality. It is a cute and fashionable brand to show off on vacations while swimming and tanning. “I love Triangl bikinis for summer because the quality is very good and the designs on them are really cute. Also, it’s perfect for tanning and wearing it on any pool or beach day,” said Sofia Caprio (7).

Nightlife in the Key is very popular, with its many hangouts, gettogethers, dinners, and rides at night on bikes and golf carts. On the weekends, many Key Rats go to sleep late at night and wake up late in the afternoon, just to do it all over again the next day. Nighttime is one of the Key’s prettiest times of the day with the sunsets on the beach and the boating to cap off the day.

NIGHTLIFE

On the Key, there are many restaurants of different cuisines, from Argentinian to Japanese dishes. Some popular spots are Italian restaurant Narbona, Argentinian restaurants Milanezza, Novecento and Patagonia, and Japanese restaurants Kazumi and Sake Room. From asado to empanadas to sushi, you should give a new food a try!

KEY BISCAYNE IS KNOWN FOR ITS BEACHES, ARGENTINIAN FOOD, AND SOCIAL LIFE. IT HOLDS A LARGE, DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF ALL AGES FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

ON THE WATER

People in the Key take advantage of their waters, as the island is one of the most beautiful places in Miami. Key Rats take frequent fishing trips on their boats and spend the day on the water. They like to go tubing, swimming, and fishing. They leave early in the day and come back at night. They come back with different kinds of fish.

ERNIE’S ACAI

Whenever I am craving a sweet treat, I head to Ernie’s Acai. Ernie’s Acai has three different locations around Miami. When I look up at the menu on the screen, there are so many options. There are both smoothies and acai bowls to pick from. I often pick the acai bowls. My favorite acai bowl is the Purple Reign. This bowl is topped with banana, coconut oil, pineapple, strawberries, lemon zest, and granola. I sometimes choose to make my bowl because of the many delicious topping choices such as raspberry puree, Nutella, toasted coconut, and peanut butter. Ernie’s Acai is the perfect place to go for your refreshing treat.

PLAYA BOWLS

Playa Bowls is a beach-inspired acai spot with so many delicious options. Playa Bowls has several locations throughout Miami. I visited the location on 57th Avenue. When I open the doors, I immediately notice the restaurant is very colorful and decorated. It reminds me of a surf shack, with a surfboard hanging from the ceiling and a chalkboard menu. The menu has so many different bowls to choose from and lets people remove or add as many toppings as wanted, like the 8th Ave, Pura Vida, Tropical, Nutella Bowl. I always get the Nutella Bowl which has Playa Acai topped with granola, banana, strawberry, coconut flakes, and Nutella drizzle. After a long day in the sun, or during summer, an acai bowl is a very refreshing treat, especially from Playa Bowls. I love Playa Bowls, and it is my favorite acai place.

Every week I am waiting for Sunday to go to Pinecrest Market. Getting my acai bowl fresh in the morning is my favorite part of my weekend. Whenever I walk through the market it is always a very lively feeling. The acai bowls are so refreshing and always made with the freshest fruit. I love going to Pinecrest Market because they always have so many options on what you can put in your bowl. I always get acai with banana, strawberries, blueberries, mango, chia seeds, and granola. I love this order because there are so many fruits and the granola for a crunch. Pinecrest Market never disappoints to make an amazing acai bowl. -IVANA

The cafeteria serves different types of pizza, each with a crispy-soft crust, melty cheese and sauce. “My favorite food option at Gulliver is the pizza. The pizza always has the ideal amount of cheese and it always toasted to perfection,” said Geisha Pacheco (8). Gulliver offers pizza to students everyday and sometimes even changes the toppings. At Gulliver, pizza is one of the students most favorite foods because it is always warm, cheesy, and flavorful.

The cafeteria has a salad bar with many fruit options. Students can fill a bowl with many different choices of fruit to create their fruit bowl, and pair it with other options in the bar such as dried fruit and yogurt or granola .“Sometimes I like going to get the green grapes because they are crunchy and really good,” said Brielle Sanchez (8).

Every afternoon students rush to get in line, waiting to browse the menu and get their lunch. Sage Dining offers different choices of food for the main course everyday although students are always met with different options of pizza, the salad bar and premade sandwiches. Throughout the week main options are changed giving students different choices everyday.

“I love when the sage staff serves the pasta because it’s my favorite and I always come back for seconds,” said Ely Ashraf (8).

The menu changes everyday so students and teachers can have different favorites.

“My favorite course at Gulliver is the fishsticks because they have the perfect amount of saltiness,” said Dr. Ginsberg.

Lunch is something all students excitedly await to finally browse the options, choose whichever tasty courses the cafeteria offers that day, and sit down after several classes.

ALTHOUGH FORTNITE GETS A BAD REPUTATION FROM PARENTS, THERE’S A REASON WHY KIDS LOVE IT.

One of the greatest influences in the life of a teen in the 2020s is videogames. There is one name amongst the many games found on devices that sticks out: Fortnite, the obsession of any boy between the ages of 10 to 18.

“Fortnite impacts my life by allowing me to communicate and have fun with my friends, and I meet a lot of people who play it, but most of all I love trash talking to people,” said seventh grade Fortnite enthusiast Stefano Stiglitz who was not shy about his 12,000 hours on the app.

Contrary to what adults think, video games can actually teach kids many important lessons.

“Fortnite has taught me that at times it will be your own teammates who take your loot,” said Troy Galembeck Rohr (8).

But there are other attributes to it. Although adults often villainize video game usage, it is the video game that keeps their kids company when they’re out at work. They also build online communities and keep students connected while away from school.

“Fortnite saves me from boredom,” said Yiannis Kavalekas (8).

Fortnite is a game that has defined our childhood and entertained our generation. Bearing with it many positive features, one shouldn’t overlook.

SIMPLE BUN

A bun is a very convenient hairstyle when you need to gather your hair. To achieve a bun, first you will grab all your hair in one hand. Then, you will twist your hair counter clockwise. After your hair has been twirled, you will grab a hair tie and tie it together at the base, achieving a perfect bun.

A slick back ponytail is a popular hairstyle known for keeping your hair back and out of your face. It is also considered a very clean hairstyle. This look can be achieved by applying gel or a hair wax stick onto your hair and slicking it back with a brush and into a ponytail. “It’s a clean and simple hairstyle that is really practical for sports and it keeps my hair out of my face,” Ava Nullman (7) said.

HALF UP, HALF DOWN BRAIDS

There are several popular styles of braids such as French braids, Double braids, and Dutch braids. It’s a simple skill that can execute a modish hairstyle. “Braids are a fun hairstyle. They’re good for a school day and I can keep them for after school sports,” said Carolina O’Brien (7).

The Half Up, Half Down hairstyle can be accomplished by taking the crown of your hair and clipping it back with any type of clip. Many like to accessorize the look with a claw clip, especially from the popular brand, Emi Jay. “One of my favorite hairstyles is half up, half down because I like having my hair down but my hair up at the same time, so putting in this hairstyle gives me both,” said Silvana Holschneider (6).

TikTok’s algorithm has a very spontaneous way of choosing which videos are going to be viral. It all depends on the content of the video, how many times it’s been put on people’s FYP, and the mood that the viewer is in. Food videos are extremely popular on Tiktok, sometimes with recipes on new delicious desserts or mouth watering snacks.

Tiktok Viral Foods:

Hwachae, a delicious Korean watermelon punch that is commonly made for those who are “Severely dehydrated at three in the morning.” Its main ingredients are watermelon, strawberry milk, sprite, and ice.

Chamoy Pickle, a juicy pickle coated in chamoy and other various ingredients, such as, fruity candy strings, takis, and a sprinkle of spicy powder.

Tanghulu is a traditional Chinese snack which is made out of sugar coated fruits, such as strawberries, grapes, and or oranges. It’s difficult to perfect because of the accuracy necessary to melt the sugar.

On February 5, 2024, a TikTok user called “pr4yforgabs” posted a video of a bowl filled with delicious strawberries drizzled in chocolate with the song “What You Won’t Do for Love” by Bobby Caldwell playing in the background. This video has a total of 50.6 million likes and 455.6 million views.

The Premier League is a special place full of the best players going head to head on the soccer field. The game has an estimated 4.7 million fans who all have a favorite team. Some of the more popular teams are Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal; they all compete with each other in the league.

“This season was extremely exciting, and there were a bunch of very fun matchups. I was super excited to see my team do really well,” said Matias Santoyo Geijo (8).

In our community, the Premier League is one of the most popular leagues, with many of the students constantly talking about the teams. Students, like eighth grader Vittorio Rossi, avidly

watch the matches at home.

“One exciting thing that I saw while watching the Champions League was that Real Madrid beat Man City in an away game, and it is funny how every year there is a pattern of Real Madrid winning and then Manchester City winning,” said Vittorio Rossi (8).

Some students have even gone to the games in person, to see star players like Erling Haaland, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Mohamed Salah. Eighth grader Jesse Kaplan was able to experience it firsthand.

“It was an amazing experience with a totally different atmosphere from games in the United States,” said Kaplan (8).

SPRING SPIRIT WEEK BROUGHT THE PARTY TO CAMPUS.

SPIRIT WEEK SNAPSHOTS

The students section was cheering loudly when eighth graders came out on the gym floor and started performing with their fellow teachers during the spring pep rally in March. This out of the ordinary thing shocked students as teachers don’t normally perform in pep rallies. As students watched their favorite teachers dance for them, they were filled with emotions.

“I really enjoyed when the teachers did the TikTok dance because it was very funny and as someone who personally uses TikTok and does those dances and enjoys doing them I thought it was nice to see my teachers do them like I do,” said Kaia Berkowitz (5).

Not only were students hyped for the pep rally, they were also hyped for spirit week where everyone showed up to school with smiles on their faces. Unique and vast outfits were displayed throughout all of the students that week. On

Raider Pride Day, everyone dressed from head to toe in blue and white to exhibit their school spirit.

“My favorite part about spirit week was getting to dress out of uniform and showing spirit especially when I got to wear yellow for color war to represent my grade level,” said Eden Sotolongo (5).

During the week, there were several themes. For instance, Color Day, where each grade was to dress up in a specific color to convey spirit for their grade. Students competed in mini games throughout the week including a game of rock, paper, scissors where students bonded while gathering more and more beads to compete with who had the most at the end of the week, the spring sports pep rally.

“The pep rally marked the end of a successful spirit week,” said Carolina Aizemberg (7).

TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT

14-time Grammy winner and pop star Taylor Swift recently released her eleventh studio album titled, The Tortured Poets Department, with the addition of 15 extra songs on the second version The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. This anticipated album has been holding over millions of fans since the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. As a big fan of Swift myself, I have been waiting a long two months for her to finally release last year. Many speculations came out over what the album will sound like and who it will be about. Rumors started to spiral and after the big news of her and her boyfriend of six years breaking up last year, everyone realized we would be getting our first breakup album since Red back in 2012. Once Swift released the track list, I knew it would be an amazing album mixing the vibes of folklore and Midnights. On April 19th, the album was released. My personal favorites are “So Long, London” “Guilty as Sin?”, “loml”, and “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart”. “So Long, London” was a direct message to former boyfriend, Joe Alywn. Being track 5, which Swift reserves for her most sentimental and vulnerable songs, I was so scared to listen. “Guilty as Sin?” is a more pop feeling song describing her stifled feelings from her relationship. The phrase “loml” normally means love of my life, but throughout Taylor’s song, she uses different meanings throughout it. Her writing styles are so hard to capture in words. It is just perfect. “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” is definitely my favorite song from the album. It has a pretty poppy tune, but some of the saddest lyrics I’ve ever heard, talking about what it is like to be a superstar. We, the listeners, get to follow her along on a revisit to her past two flames and her current, Travis Kelce. A few songs on the album are apparently about her former fling, Matty Healy, but I am yet to find them. Listening to how she writes her songs and how moving her lyrics are, makes every listen a special experience.

THREE POP ICONS RELEASED BRAND NEW ALBUMS IN SPRING 2024.

ARIANA GRANDE ETERNAL SUNSHINE

Ariana Grande’s latest album Eternal Sunshine comes out on the heels of a dramatic year involving divorce and a new relationship with her Wicked costar. Although “intro (end of the world)” was really short to even be considered a song, her vocals were beautiful but it’s not surprising because it’s ARIANA GRANDE. I also understand why this song is the first track on the album because it’s introducing the topics and giving us just a taste of what’s next. I really like the production on “bye”, and the beat is absolutely amazing. The message of this song is also really nice because it’s about loving yourself and saying bye to someone who isn’t good for you. Of course, everyone interprets music differently which is the beauty of music but this is just what I got from it. Not my favorite, but still good nonetheless. “Don’t wanna break up again” has a really catchy chorus, and I also think that although it isn’t really for me, the topic is very relatable to many girls (or guys). The beat was also extremely nice. I loved “eternal sunshine”! I do wish that the song was a little slower because I had to read the lyrics to actually understand what she’s truly singing about. The beat is really happy and upbeat but I honestly found the song sad. It was great though. “supernatural” is definitely on my top three for this album! The chorus and production are so cool and really good.This is probably one of my favorite pop songs I’ve ever listened to. It gives a nostalgic vibe because it reminds me of early 2010’s music and it’s very catchy.I like the lyrics of “yes and?”, I’ll admit that It’s very catchy and was stuck in my head for hours after listening. I also feel like she made the song to all her haters who called her names and accused her of things she may or may not have done. The lyrics of “i wish i hated you” are very sad, as they’re about loving someone so much and being hurt by them that you just want to hate them. Her vocals are good as on every song on this album too. As much as I hear “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” on TikTok, I think this song is beautiful in general. Her vocals are super pretty, and the bridge is amazing. The lyrics are so sad, but they’re also bittersweet. I love everything about this song, and there’s nothing bad to say about it. “imperfect for you”, “we can’t be friends” and “supernatural” are my favorite songs on this album. The chorus and beat are really catchy and it was stuck in my head for so many days ever since I heard it. Amazing and her voice is too pretty to believe. I love how Ariana layers her vocals in “Ordinary things (ft. Nonna)”, and it’s so sweet how she has a little interlude of her grandma talking. I didn’t really feel the vibe with “true story” but I see the message she’s trying to convey with the song and I get it. Not the best song on the album in my opinion though. I understand why “the boy is mine” is one of her most popular songs on the album, but I wouldn’t listen to it in my free time. I could see myself listening to it in the car when it comes on the radio.

COWBOY CARTER

The eighth album from the queen of pop herself Beyonce, the new album named Cowboy Carter is about the roots of the country and pop music genre. It captures the perfect blend between country and pop music which helps America open its eyes even more into other cultures. The album contains 27 tracks with a run-time of 78 minutes; the tracks involve collabs with other artists such as Miley Cyrus, Willie Nelson, Post Malone, and Dolly Parton. Some tracks can be up to 30 seconds of a special message or sort of an introduction for the album. The one song that kicked off the most was the song named, “Texas Hold ‘Em”, which went viral on multiple social media platforms for its catch and country feel. The song got lots of attention also because a tik tok dance was developed from this song and the strings, banjo and hand percussion is what makes the song so catchy. Overall, the album was meant for Beyonce to go be seen as a black woman with southern roots and to open the culture to others. While listening to our favorite songs from the album so far would be “Daughter”, “16 Carriages”, “American Requiem”, “Spaghetti”, and so many more we’ve noticed it brings a sort of feel for a country we never thought we had. Usually we don’t really like country but listening to this album got me into country and showed me the southern culture and how they use their songs to promote certain messages.

Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia Eau de Parfum has a fruity floral scent. Its key notes are pear, white gardenia, and brown sugar. This scent is easy layered and long-lasting. “I really like the Gucci perfume because of its floral smell and I can wear it to school without it being super strong,” said Elisa Senior (8).

J’ADORE

Dior J’adore Eau de Parfum has a warm floral scent; its high notes are Ylang Ylang, Damascus Rose and Jasmine. This scent is very feminine and has a strong smell.” I really like this scent for special occasions. I really like the warm scent it has and I really like the packaging it has,” said Lilly Haley (8).

SOL DE JANEIRO

Sol de Janeiro 68 is also in the fruity floral type; its key notes are Brazilian jasmine, Pink dragonfruit, and sheer vanilla. This body spray can also be safely sprayed in your hair for long-lasting wearing. “I like Sol de Janeiro 68 as it isn’t a fancy smell but instead is beachy. It’s good for everyday use,” said Aisha Sheikh (8).

Miss Dior has a beautiful mix of floral and fruity scent. This fragrance is filled with lily flowers and brightness. The bottle is very aesthetic and pleasing.This perfume gets you many compliments. “I like this perfume because it is really cute and the bottle is very cute. Also, every time I walk past someone they tell me I smell so good and give me compliments,” said Antonella Yunez (8).

STUDENTS ENJOY GOING TO BAR AND BAT MITZVAHS TO CELEBRATE THEIR FRIENDS’ NEW STAGE OF THEIR LIFE.

Bar and Bat Mitzvahs have been filling up this year’s calendar for seventh graders. When a Jewish girl or boy turns thirteen, they have a coming-of-age ceremony, followed by a party with all their friends. A Bar or Bat Mitzvah party can have hundreds of guests in a venue with photo booths, dance floors, DJs, dessert bars, and more.

“I like to wear Katie J dresses to Bar and Bat mitzvahs because they match the vibe,” said Ava Nullman (7).

Everyone gets a party favor like a custom hoodie at the end of every party, a tribute to the special day. Special gifts are given on a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, not the traditional present. “You’re supposed to give a check that is a multiple of 18. “In my family, we like to give multiples of 18 because it is a Jewish tradition that we honor,” said Daniela Baer (7).

Nearly every Saturday, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah takes place.

“I love going to Bar or Bat mitzvahs because the DJs play good music and it’s fun to celebrate with your friends,” said Sofia Gonzalez (7) .

People love to go to Bat or Bar Mitzvahs to go and take pictures in the photo booths. Photo booths are a great experience for the kids at the parties because they get to have a great experience and make great memories with some of their closest friends. Photo booths also include cool backgrounds with great theme ideas.

“I love photo booths because I get to do crazy poses with my friends and make long-lasting memories,” said Julia Teijeiro (7).

BAT MITZVAHS

The NFL draft is when the best of the best prospects from college football get drafted to one of the NFL’s 32 teams. Among them, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels is a dual threat quarterback, with stellar athletic abilities. Coming off winning the CFB national championship, Blake Corum is one of the strongest running backs in this year’s draft. Meanwhile, projected to go #1 overall, Caleb Williams has the potential to be a future star.

“I like Caleb Williams and believe he will go 1st overall because of his elite passing ability on the run,” said Nicolas Botty (7).

Many people will tune in to watch their team draft a player because the player that they are drafting could completely change their franchise, even if it’s a pick later in the draft.

Many think that prospect Marvin Harrison Jr, former wide receiver for Ohio State, is the future of the NFL.

“I think that Marvin Harrison will be the face of the next generation of wide receivers because of his quickness and good hands,” said Bosco Del Cueto (7).

Tom Brady was drafted in the sixth round by the New England Patriots and was projected to be a backup for most of his career. However, defying all odds he led his team to win six super bowls and won another with the Tampa Buccaneers in 2021. This shows that anything is possible in the NFL Draft and that is why it’s such a big event.
