SPRING HAS SPRUNG

Over spring break, students went to many different places, from Colorodo to Europe. However, some stayed in Miami and toured their city. Ava Mendlestein (7) went to the Youth Fair.

“The food was really good and the rides were so fun to be on,” said Mendlestein. Spring break is always something that students look forward to throught the year. Kajsa Brion (8) was excited to go to Vail.

“I was happy to reconnect with friends that I haven’t seen in a while,” said Brion. Some students ventured off to tropical islands, like Emma Zabalo (8).

“When I went to Marco Island over spring break, I spent time with my family in our apartment there and went to the beach,” said Zabalo.

“I really enjoyed seeing new countries that I have never seen before,” said Sadie Scheiner (8).

OUTER BANKS S3

THE

Outer Banks is the new go to new TV series. The new season just came out Feb. 23. People had already fallen in love with seasons 1 and 2 and were anxiously waiting for season 3 to come out. Season 3 has made Outer Banks so popular that it gets 99 million views per hour.

Season 3 is all about the friendships, emotions and all the things they have gone through together. In season 3, the characters got closer, and I feel this is what made the show go viral. It is a show about teamwork and friendship.

The show was very adventurous and it showed all the people going through so much together. During Outer Banks season 3 they encountered new obstacles, dealt with their personal life, relationships, and struggles, while also dealing with the new treasure El Dorado.

This season delivers the same action, suspense, and romance that fans love to watch.

RENAISSANCE

THE HUNGER GAMES IS COMING BACK TO THEATERS AND SOCIAL MEDIA WITH ITS NEW PREQUEL.

Based on a best-selling book series, The Hunger Games is a film series composed of 4 movies, about the future nation of Panem, previously the United States, which is now divided into 12 districts and is ruled by the Capitol. As punishment for a failed revolt, the districts are forced to provide two child tributes to fight to the death in the annual Hunger Games until there is only one survivor.

The film series was a cultural phenomenon of the 2010s and has had a resurgence in popularity today after it moved to Netflix. Members of the fandom have debated on TikTok being Team Gale or Team Peeta, Katniss’ love interests. Gale Hawthorne, Katniss’ childhood friend, is passionate and bold. Out of 100 people polled, 13.6% of viewers are on Team Gale. Meanwhile, Peeta Mellark is the second tribute selected from District 12 chosen to compete in the games alongside Katniss. Peeta is described as “selfless and gentle.” 86.4% of people interviewed chose Team Peeta because of his good nature.

A new Hunger Games movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is set to release this year. It focuses on the years before Snow becomes the evil and authoratarian president of Panem. Teenage Snow sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he mentors Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute from District 12. Hunter Schafer will play Tigris Bird, a cousin of Snow. Tom Blyth is set to play Coiolanus Snow, and Rachel Zegler will play Lucy Gray Baird.

“I’m very excited to see it, because I thought the series was already over,” said Eli Morgenstern. “I’m a big Hunger Games fan. I’m just excited to see what the future, or should I say past, holds for these characters.”

MARCH MADNESS

ROUND 1

Some surprising games in the first round included FDU against Purdue. The game concluded with Purdue winning 63-58. No one expected it, but the underdogs prevailed and made it through to the next round. The same occurred in the game Princeton against Arizona. The game ended 59-55 another surprising win. After Princeton beat Arizona, 93% of the remaining perfect brackets became imperfect in ESPN’s Tournament Challenge.

ROUND 2

The second round was filled with extremely close games and more surprises, like Kansas vs. Arkansas. Kansas was the favorite, first seed, but everyone was astonished when the game ended 72-71 in favor of Arkansas. Another huge upset was when the fifteenth seed Princeton beat the seventh seed Missouri 78-63.

SWEET SIXTEEN

The sweet sixteen games had a lot of exciting moments, including the fifth seed San Diego State beating first seed Alabama 71-64. Another game was the fifteenth seed Princeton vs. the sixth seed Creighton, in which Creighton ended Princeton’s run 86-75. Another crazy game was when the fifth seed University of Miami beat the first seed Houston. It was especially crazy because Miami won 89-75.

ELITE EIGHT

The Elite Eight was a very interesting and exciting round. There was a very close game where fifth seed San Diego State beat Creighton by one point 57-56. Another close game decided by three points was ninth seed FAU beating third seed Kansas State, 79-76. Fifth seed Miami kept winning, beating second seed Texas 88-81. Fourth seed UConn beat third seed Gonzaga 82-54.

FINAL FOUR

With the Championship game on the line, the final four was very dramatic and fun to watch. Starting with the ninth seed FAU vs. the fifth seed San Diego State. This game ended on a buzzerbeater for San Diego State 71-72. The next game was the fifth seed Miami versus the fourth seed UConn. This game was pretty lopsided the entire time, as UConn won with a score of 59-72. “I think that as a UM fan, it was a historic tournament, as we made it to the final four,” said Lars Goodrich (7). “I liked how all the UM fans were really passionate and supported their team.”

CHAMPIONSHIP

In the Championship game, the fifth seed San Diego State Aztecs played the fifth seed UConn. Both of these teams fought hard to get into this position, and this game was for all the marbles. However, UConn prevailed as they won the championship 59-76. “I thought the tournament was crazy,” said Teshler Augustin (8). “I wasn’t expecting some teams to go as far as they did, and as a UM fan, I was surprised how well they did. When they lost against UConn, I respected the way they played against us and wanted UConn to win.”

“My favorite Emi Jay clip is the Big Clip in Sweet Lavender because I love the color scheme and design,” said Daniela Munk (8).

You can see many students around the campus wearing these stylish claw clips to keep their hair up. This is a very practical way of keeping their hair up. Students can express themselves through these claw clips which is a reason why they have risen in popularity re cently. These clips are a way that students can be accessorized at school while still staying in dresscode. Headbands, hair ties, and of course claw clips are just a few of the many hair acces sories that can be purchased at Emi Jay.

“My favorite Emi Jay clip is the Sweet heart Clip in Something Blue because I like the floral pattern and the gemstones,” said Belli Latham (8).

All of their hair accessories stand out in comparison to any other hair accessory be cause of the great quality and the various styles available. Emi Jay claw clips also hold hair very nicely without causing discomfort since they are composed of a durable resin substance. The variety in color, size, and pattern can fit anyone’s aesthetic. Emi Jay claw clips have risen in popu larity for a reason and have many hair accesso ries to choose from.

“My favorite Emi Jay Clip is the Big Clip in Pink Sugar because it is a very pretty color and it is very glittery,” said Mila Meiser (8).

On most walks around campus you can find a student with her hair pulled up in an Emi Jay clip. In addition to clips, the brand also sells headbands and hair ties.

Sometimes students don‘t have enough time to sit down at a restaurant, so a fast food spot is a great option in a time crunch. There are many popular fast food restaurants that people visit throughout Miami, including Wendy‘s, Chipotle, and Chik-Fil-A.

“I love Wendy’s because of their 4 for 4 meal: it‘s amazing,” said Emilio Perez-Garcia (8).

Wendy’s gives students the typical fast food fare of hamburgers, chicken nuggets, and french fries, but there are also other fast food restaurants with whatever international cuisine you are craving. For example, Chipotle offers burrito bowls, tacos, queso, guacamole and more.

“The burritos are bursting with flavor, and I like their guacamole a lot,“ said Lulu Tripodi (8). „Their tortillas are really good. I order either a burrito or a taco when I go.”

Another fast food restaurant that stood out to students was Chik-Fil-A. Students loved it for its waffle fries, its specialty Chik-Fil-A sandwich, and its refreshing soft drinks.

“I like it because the ice is really good,” said Nora Henein (8).

When it‘s time for a fast and easy meal, Miami had its share of delicious fast food chains.

The show consisted of twelve of Rihanna’s greatest hits like “We Found Love,” “Wild Thoughts,” “Umbrella” and many more.

“My favorite song was Wild Thoughts,” said Eli Morgenstern (7).

Rihanna wore a dramatic red Alaïa coat with some matching gloves. All of the clothes she wore were bright red.

TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR

LUCIA FERREIRO LINARES (8) RECAPS THE TAYLOR SWIFT CONCERT IN TAMPA.

“It’s been a long time coming!” Taylor Swift exclained as she opened the Eras Tour. Between the Ticketmaster disaster, the outfits, the openers, the crowds, and the setlist, the Eras Tour was a hot topic this semester.

When Taylor Swift announced she was touring, demand was high and chaos ensued. The day of her presale, Nov. 15, Ticketmaster crashed. There were too many people trying to get tickets and trying to resell them. The prices skyrocketed, fans went crazy and only a lucky few got tickets. But for those fans, including me, the exciting anticipation for the tour grew.

I started planning outfits, trips, hotels, and more- this was more than a concert. It was a cultural phenomenon. People dressed up as their favorite era, or a specific moment in Taylor’s life. They made friendship bracelets to trade with other Swifties, wrote lyrics in their arms, painted 13’s on their hands, and did makeup and hair for the special day.

The day of the concert, my parents and I drove four hours from Miami to Tampa, got to the stadium at 5pm and waited in the crowd. At 7:53, a timer appeared on the screen on stage, announcing there were only two more minutes. 3, 2, 1, the screen opened and out came people with colorful flying drapes until the show began. Then, in walked the star, Taylor Swift.

She divided her concert by eras, and the first one was Lover. The concert started with the song Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince, and then she sang six songs from Lover. She transitioned to a nostalgic and happy era, Fearless. She sang three songs before she had an outfit change. She then went into Evermore, an earthy and calm vibe, where she sang five songs from this album. After that went Reputation and Speak Now. Then she went on to sing her Red era, including her emotional All Too Well 10-minute performance. After that, she transitioned to her longest era, Folklore. She brought out a prop house where sang Betty and Cardigan. Then came 1989, and she sang upbeat pop songs. The last era was her newest album Midnights. She sang Bejeweled, Lavender Haze, and ended the era with Karma. She closed the concert with two surprise acoustic songs: Mad Woman, from Folklore and Mean from Speak Now

If you are lucky enough to get tickets you are in for the best concert of your life. From the music, Taylor’s energetic performance, the people in the crowd with you, and the atmosphere, it is not one to be missed. I’ll summarize the concert in Taylor’s words from the song Long Live: “I had the time of my life with you.”

DECADES OF

SCREAM

The original Scream takes place in 1996. It is the movie that started it all. It stars Sidney Prescott and her group of friends. A killer with a ghost face mask starts targeting Sidney and her friends for his killing spree. The original is often considered the best movie of the series. I agree with that opinion for its originality and how smart the killings are.

SCREAM (1996)

FROM 1996 TO TODAY, THE SCREAM MOVIES HAVE DRAWN IN A STRONG FANBASE. HOW DO THE SIX MOVIES HOLD UP? Seventh graders dani pellar hill and cosi klim-wiren give their opinions.

Scream 2 was came out two years after the first one hooked fans. Scream two follows the genre of horror with elements of comedy, and continues to use sydney prescott as the main character including other survivors from the last movie. Even though the movie had issues such as the script often needing changes, it still racked up 172 million dollars, less than the original.

SCREAM 2 (1997)

The film takes place in the 2000s. Following what had happened in the previous films, Ghost Face comes to Hollywood and Sidney Prescott is in hiding. A new character picks up the mask and starts killing the Stab 3 cast to find out where Sidney is. This film had some mixed reviews, which is deserved. The Ghost Face reveal is underwhelming because he was barely in the movie before.

This film takes place in 2011. It starts at the 15th anniversary of the original murders from 1996. Sidney Prescott returns to Woodbury High after ten years. Ghost Face picks up the knife again and starts killing students from the school. Many think Scream 4 is better than the original, and I agree as the revealed killers were a big plot twist.

This film takes place in 2022, 25 years after the killing spree of Billy Loomis and Stu Macher. A new Ghost Face appears and targets a group of teens who are all linked to the originals. The new Ghost Face attempts to make a “Requel” of Stab 8. People have mixed opinions on this Scream movie, mostly saying it’s middle of the pack in the series. I disagree with this– I think it’s quietly one of the best ones, because the killers were unexpected and the reveal was a shock.

We polled students on which item is most important for a vacation.

Students love to document photos of their trips to show friends and family when they get home. Some popular cameras are Polaroids and disposable cameras.“My number one travel essential I bring is a camera,” said Alexa Aguirre Gonzalez Camarena (7). “I love taking my camera everywhere to keep memories of the best times. I love taking pictures of all the places I get to see. I also like taking pictures on the camera because I love how the filter looks.” Cameras are used to capture wonderful memories like a boat day with family or a meal at an extraordinary restaurant.

The Miami Open Final was a great experience, but there were a couple of things that didn’t reach my expectations. The parking for the stadium was a mess. Also, it wasn’t clear where to really go. If you were lucky enough, then in the game you got the shade. But, I ended up getting they are in the beating sun, past 84 degrees Fahrenheit. It was so hot. My back legs, everything, was sweating. Besides all of those things.

I really enjoyed the food. They had a frozen lemonade that was so good, especially since I was dying of heat. They also had a chicken sandwich, which also tasted amazing. The atmosphere was crazy. Every time one of the players got a good point, the crowd would go crazy.

My experience at the Miami Open was wonderful, as I got to see many different tennis players play the game that they love. I saw the number 1 tennis player in the world Carlos Alcaraz play and a player who gets very angry by the name of Alexander Bublik. Alexander Bublik lost against JJ Wolf, who is an American ex NCAA Division 1 player. In the blistering hot weather, my best friend and I were able to enjoy delicious food and drinks. It was so fun to see a global ATP competition, and the players that I was going for were very successful. I enjoyed the tennis, but I also enjoyed the experience.

FACE OFF

THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC ENDED WITH A BATTLE BETWEEN TWO MAJOR LEAGUE GREATS.

The World Baseball Classic ended in dramatic fashion. The two faces of baseball faced each other for the win, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani struck out trout for the win and sealed the victory for Japan. The World Baseball Classic is something that happens every four years. The Classic brings countries from all over the world and players to represent their countries.

“I think it was amazing to see all the countries battling each other and it was really fun to watch,” said Josh Gutierrez (6).

The Classic brings a large fanbase too because 20 countries compete in the Classic.

“It was a true treat to watch the countries battle each other and watching their fans cheer them on with a lot of passion,” said Mason Maduro (6).

In the Classic, there are four Pools, each pool holds 4 teams and the winner of the pool moves on to the quarter finals. The winners then move on to the semis then the

famous finals, where the winner will live in history. The finals for the 2023 World Baseball Classic was posed to be one of the best baseball games ever.

This finals game was Team U.S.A led by Mike Trout vs Team Japan led by Shohei Ohtani. These two juggernauts of a team battled it out to the end where the final out was something made in a movie. The two teammates, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, the two best players in the world, battled it out. Shohei Ohtani eventually struck out Mike Trout, sealing the win for Team Japan.

This game racked up a whopping amount of 4.5 million viewers from Fox and Fox Deportes, and this alone is not all the viewers. In Japan, the Classic is famous and in the last WBC (2017), about 62 million people watched it. So just imagine the amount from this year.

It was truly a spectacular Classic and started sports off right this year.

DIGITAL CAMERAS

In 1888, Kodak by George Eastman introduced the world to the camera, a modern machine that was able to capture any moment in a photograph that could last a lifetime. By the 1990’s, Kodak developed the digital camera, a new way to capture memories without the need of developing film. Digital cameras were a more effective way of taking photos because customers could instantly see their photos and were also able to take as many as they would like by buying different amounts of battery and storage on their cameras. However, Steve Jobs and the Apple iPhone joined the photography industry in the early 2000’s. The new technology available made digital cameras obsolete to the generation who grew up in “the era of the iPhone.” However, the new generation has begun to use digital cameras because it began trending on TikTok for its aesthetic. “I love taking pictures of my friends at parties with my digital camera because it looks a lot cooler,” said Ana Luiza Fortuna (8).

DISPOSABLE CAMERAS

In a similar fashion, the 1990’s are influencing many trends today. 1990’s hairstyles and fashion are continually increasing in popularity across social media. This sparked interested in living in the moment and getting a vintage look with disposable cameras.

“I love using vintage cameras because a lot of the pictures turn out better, and I don’t have to worry about it using storage on my phone,” said Daniela Solorzano (8). Disposable cameras are commonly sold in a pack of two with each camera able to take anywhere from 20-40 pictures. These pictures are taken using a roll of film within the camera that then needs to be developed. The photos can be developed into printouts and onto CD’s that can then be downloaded onto a device. Disposable cameras are light, which makes them easy to carry around. They are a fun way to capture memories with friends and family.
