A newspaper clipping was behind the whole idea of formuating and researching behind this thesis. The Memorial and museum for Tamil freedom 昀椀ghters was started designed on a mountain slope which over-sees the Vellore town. The museum uses locally available materials like granite and steel construction was chosen because of the hard strata of the mountain. The freedom 昀椀ghters were studied about their life history, their nature of resistance against the british people and wach of them were sorted out and placed in the museum. A thread model was made based on the freedom 昀椀ghters and the model was studied, which gives the form of the museum. The linear corridor which connects all the museum blocks represents the British period and each of the museum blocks represents the freedom 昀椀ghters based on their resistance shown towards the Opposition people. This gives raise to and interlocking form which has many in and out volumes. The openings were carefully placed over looking the historic places of the city which acts as a response to the context chosen. The major inspiration for this museum was the study of ‘Nanjing Museum’ by architect Steven Holl which has a similiar approach towards the built form.

TYPICAL CROSS SECTION DETAIL

East Coast of the Indian region has been facing a silent problem of sea-water intruding the coastal regions. This urban design provides solution at different levels of the community, so that the people solve the problem over a period of time. This comes as a wakeup call since the sea water intrusion is an irreversible process and can make the parts of the coatal region un-inhabitable. First part of the urban design deals with documenation of the problem in a selected part of Chennai city, while the second or the later part deals with solution 昀椀nding for the problem addressed. Without being aware of the problem, the localites continue to bore edible water from the ground which makes way for the sea water to intrude into the land parcel. Different solutions which involves the people has been discussed along with natural water rechargers and arti昀椀cial aquifers also strategically placed along the strectch of the site. Thiruvanmiyur is selected as the site because of its high density of residents and the problem being at an alarming rate.

Over seeing the Turahalli forest on the west and NICE road on the North, the spaces shaped the building into a rigid trapezoid shape, which was made porous by adding and subracting the volumes. Banashankari house is a G+3 single family residence with area of 7000 sq.ft. Green spaces was planned to re昀氀ect the greenary abundant in the site. The spaces was planned in a way that each room is over looking towards the green spaces around the site which brings in peacocks from the forest to the residence plot. Though the client is a Techie and lot of services had to planned prior. The east elevation of the building is fully utilised for services. Two staircases were planned, one for internal vertical traverse and the external staircase(in cover) is for the Guests arriving and the remaining spaces were made as parking. The site had a height difference of 8 ft in the longer end of the site which is 80 ft. So the Foyer space in ground 昀氀oor had 11 ft huge opening as entrance. A MS pavilion is planned at the terrace with grass on both sides of the pavillion. This building resembles Tropical architectural style and modi昀椀ed according to Banashankari’s local climate and Vastu. As the previous project the heart of this project is also the free 昀氀owing LIving, Dining and Kitchen spaces which adds upto 37 ft in length.

The soaring stair-well is the different in each 昀氀oor and has different to offer with each landing. Wooden Louvres with MS hollow sections were used to cover the Stairwell from the West sun. Similarly Wooden screens were used to cover Family room from the West sun. The family room cantilevers from the main building which creates a unique experience to view forest area from a 昀氀oating space. Double height spaces and skylight openings in the balconies makes them interesting since no glass is covering the openings. One approaching from the main entrance will face the large left volume of the building which creates an awe experience and proceeds to open up the building with screens and windows. All the rooms in the residence are designed to view the Turahalli forest. The tapered column lightens the building while coming in contact with the ground and has angles which is a natural response to the tapered nature of the site. The cascadding effect of the creepers from balconies is a re昀氀ection and giving back greenary to the environment. Teak-wood windows and Doors were used which are visible in the elevation. The Whole volume responds to the context while hiding in itself all the services.

FRONT ELEVATION

The omnipresence of daylight in the interiors of the house is the highlighting factor of the residence. Situated in a tight condition, the residence has a free 昀氀owing spacial arrangement with openings bringing in the natural light. The total area of the building is 5800 sq ft accompanied by another building which is attached at the back for renting purposes. The projecting cantilevers stands out from the streetline which brings dynamic feel to the pedestrians walking in the street. The 昀椀rst-昀氀oor balcony is brought down and kept enough high for usage of ground 昀氀oor and maintaining connection with the street. The Internal Courtyard and garden areas on the terrace helps to maintain the temprature. The cantilevered family area above the courtyard makes one 昀氀oat inbetween the sky and ground. Usage of WPC louvres in the Facade brings about privacy and blocks view from the interior over-looking the old houses in the vicinity. With safety and linear lines in mind the Teak wood work were detailed which shows in the front elevation of the building.

FRONT

The layers of the residence is becoming evident in the front elevation. Though the west elevation of the house is mostly hidden in the small streets of peenya industry, it is very well designed and detailed to achieve the holistic appearence of the site. The Front eleavtion of the house has Wooden louvres of height nearly 10’-0” which is seamless to the whole height. Since it is facing towards the not so good looking buildings in the front and bring about certain amount of privacy to the users, wooden louvres were used. This brings about porosity inside and 昀椀ltered sunlight to the interiors. The curved doorway at the start of the residence will make the street more interesting and will be even more welcoming for anyone coming into the house. Creeper plants were planted on the banconies to bring more dramatic look to the front elevation which were detailed using metal box and prior planning in the sections.

Warp architects, which stands for ‘WALLSMITH ARCHITECTURE AND RESEARCH PRACTISE’ is a 昀椀rm which practises in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu. I’ve did my internship for nearly an year and worked in the largest project going on at that time in the 昀椀rm. I’ve got the oppourtunity to work in residencial project, Interiors and Design and Detailing of a Hospital project in Coimbatore. I’ve also had the oppourtunity to work in design of the warp architects upcoming studio space along with the Principal architect. Internship period was really an eye opener on what are all the process that undergoes into design and execution of a building from concept to reality. I got the oppourtunity to visit the ongoing sites to co-ordinate with other disciplinaries who worked in the project. Trying to understand how things done, how different vendors interact with the building and make it a whole rather than each thing just placed in the building and popping out. Warp had the designing style of being minimalistic and daring in cantilever volumes which I think aligned me to look for similar architecture in and around the world and understand how it works. Their buildings stand out from the street silently gaining the attention it screams for.
