In 1996 San Francisco's new mayor, Willie Brown, kept a campaign promise invited "same-sex" couples to come and be married. They weren't "legal" but the point was made. On the 12th of February 2004, a Thursday, SF City Hall filled with couples and the first officially legal "same-sex" marriages were performed. Over the next 6 years of back and forth legal maneuvers marriage was legal, not legal, legal marriages were put in limbo and then finally in 2010 marriage equality was the law of the land. But given the current court and political climate, for how much longer?
