CELEBR ATING WAYNE: BEHIND A L A STING LEGACY

efore there were regular shuttle runs, volunteer rosters, booking systems and thousands of passenger journeys each year, there was simply a need within the North Waikato community—and a small group of determined people who decided something had to be done.

At the heart of that journey was Wayne.

Wayne is one of the founding members of the North Waikato Transport Trust and has played an important role in helping build the service into what it is today. From those very early days of establishing the first Health Shuttle, through to his years of continued involvement as a Trustee and Chairman, Wayne has always been someone willing to roll up his sleeves and get involved.

The story of the Health Shuttle began when Claire Molloy, Wayne’s long-time “partner in crime,” became aware of a gap in transport services for people in the North Waikato.

Claire discovered that while Health Shuttle services were being advertised, local people were not always able to access them. One woman attending a first aid course shared that she had been forced to pay for a taxi home from a medical appointment in Hamilton because she could not get a Health Shuttle.

It was clear there was a need.

Meetings were held, a committee was formed with representatives from Ngaruawahia and Te Kauwhata, and the group began looking at other Health Shuttle services operating successfully in their communities.

But having an idea was one thing.

Finding a vehicle and getting the service on the road was another.

When a second-hand wheelchairaccessible vehicle became available, Wayne and Claire made the decision to purchase it themselves. It was a huge step and a real

show of faith in what the new service could become. The Transport Trust later repaid them once funding became available.

That decision helped turn an idea into reality.

With the first vehicle secured, volunteers were recruited and trained as drivers and assistants, ready to operate the new Health Shuttle. Wayne also played an important role in establishing the systems needed to make the service work. With the assistance of St John programmer Garry Goodman, Wayne was able to come away with a workable booking system—an essential part of ensuring passengers could access the Shuttle and that the service could operate efficiently.

And Wayne’s contribution did not stop once the first Shuttle hit the road.

Over the years, he continued to be actively involved with the Trust. Wayne attended transport forums, keeping connected with the wider community transport sector and bringing that knowledge and experience back to the Trust.

He was also someone who genuinely took an interest in the day-to-day running of the service.

Wayne would regularly come into the office to check in, see how things were going and offer his support. He wasn’t the sort of Chairman who simply attended meetings and waited for the next report.

He was a hands-on Chairman, someone who wanted to know what was happening and was always willing to be involved.

That hands-on approach is something that has made Wayne such a valuable asset to the North Waikato Transport Trust.

Today, the North Waikato Transport Trust continues to support people who may otherwise struggle to get to important medical appointments and essential health services. Behind every journey is the work of many people—trustees, coordinators, volunteers, drivers, assistants and supporters—but it is important to remember those who helped lay the foundations.

The North Waikato Transport Trust is proud to recognise and celebrate Wayne for his commitment, his leadership and the lasting contribution he has made to the Trust and the wider North Waikato community.

Wayne is one of those people.

His contribution is not simply part of the Trust’s history. It is part of its legacy.

The service that exists today was built on the willingness of people like Wayne Thomson and Claire Malloy to see a problem, believe there could be a solution and then get stuck in to help make it happen.

From helping purchase the very first wheelchair-accessible vehicle, to working on getting the booking system, attending transport forums and supporting the team behind the scenes, Wayne has remained committed to the service and the people it supports.

For the North Waikato Transport Trust, Wayne has been far more than a founding member. He has been a hands-on leader, a supporter, a problem-solver and a familiar face who has continued to take an interest in the people and the service he helped establish.

It became an incorporated society in 1998 and soon offered services ranging from counselling, budgeting and employment assistance to a food bank, WINZ clinics and bereavement support.

An early success was the Toy Box, a toy library led by Leah Boldero from 1998. It operated for a decade and became part of the childhoods of a generation of local families.

Jennie Gore became manager in 1999, assisted by Linda Moss and later Ann Norman. During her tenure, the organisation moved into its current home at 1A Waerenga Road with the support of landlords Denise and John Wallace.

Jennie also worked with the community to establish Splash’n Dash, Te Kauwhata’s annual Children’s Day celebration, which continues on the first Sunday in March.

Jo Mako became Community House Manager following Jennie’s retirement in 2016, supported by Nicky Patterson. The organisation marked its 21st anniversary by adopting the Te Kauwhata Community House name.

or 30 years, Te Kauwhata & Districts Information & Support Centre Incorporated has worked to create a connected and supported community.

Today, that work continues through Te Kauwhata Community House, Toi Ako Artspace and Te Kauwhata Community Garden. The organisation will celebrate its anniversary with two fundraising events at Te Kauwhata Rugby Club on Saturday, 10 October: a high tea at 1pm and the Te Kauwhata Ball from 6.30pm until late.

Tickets are now on sale, with all funds raised helping the organisation respond to the needs of a rapidly growing community.

More than 12,000 engagements were recorded across the organisation last year,

including people seeking food, transport, mental health support, employment assistance, peer support and community activities.

Community transport use increased by 36 percent, while peer support groups now cater for people experiencing grief or cancer, new parents and parents of disabled and neurodivergent children. In recent months, the greatest increase in demand has been at the food bank.

From the library to a community home Originally known as TK DISC, the organisation began in 1996 after Hazel Boldero and Jean Lawton identified the need for locally delivered support. They gathered other community members and established the organisation at the local library, where its first staff members, Edith

A major milestone followed in 2018 when the organisation purchased its Waerenga Road building with support from Lotteries, WEL Energy Trust, Trust Waikato, Waikato District Council, Te Kauwhata Community Committee and Te Kauwhata Lions. Two renovations have since created counselling rooms, a food bank, boardroom and lounge, although the building is already regularly at capacity.

New services emerge Between 2018 and 2020, the organisation took over a medical transport service established by Rural Women members Isobel Kelly and June Smith.

Volunteer drivers continue to take people to medical appointments locally and in Hamilton and Thames.

Six art workshops led by Lauren Hughes in 2018 also grew into the Toi Ako programme and the opening of Toi Ako Artspace beneath St Margaret’s Hall in 2020.

When the Te Kauwhata Community Association closed in 2019, it gifted its building at 3 Main Road to the organisation.

The building is leased to Aparangi for the House of Treasures Op Shop, with proceeds returned to the community.

Nicky became Community House Manager in 2020 and guided the organisation through the Covid years.

Following further growth, including the expansion of Toi Ako and opening of the Community Garden, the organisation restructured in 2022. Lauren was appointed General Manager and Leanne Mako became Finance Manager. Angela McKee succeeded Nicky as Community House Manager in 2025.

Recent additions include legal clinics, social transport, creative arts therapy, peer support groups, community composting and Neighbourhood Support. The organisation also works with community partners to deliver events including SKATEfest, Unity Hoops, Chalky Christmas, Te Kauwhata Arts Weekend and the Community Photography Competition.

Less than 20 percent of its annual income is contracted. The remaining 80 percent must be found through contestable funding, earned revenue and donations.

Attending one of the anniversary events will help sustain this work during the coming year. Regular donations, including small contributions, are also welcomed.

At present, they say sleep is an optional extra!

“We’re putting in these hours because we genuinely believe in what this can become, says Mitch. “Our end goal is to acquire a decent plot of land, scale up, and show how easy it is to provide for families and communities.

Microgreens are the increasingly popular way to add amazing flavours and textures to meals without breaking the bank. The driver behind it is the belief that eating clean, organic food shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg.

And for Huntly couple Mitch and Karla Smith, microgreens are changing their lives in more ways than one. The hardworking couple both work full time and care for their children. But they also find time to run what is becoming one of Huntly’s classiest small businesses- growing tasty microgreens for the past 18 months and selling locally for just on six months now. Farmers’ markets are on their horizon this summer too.

“What we grow is seasonal but we’re in the process of setting up hydroponics to grow out of season vegetables. We currently sell through Facebook, but our next goal is selling at markets and starting a webpage.

“I’d say our most popular produce is snow peas. This is most likely due to inconsistent availability at supermarkets; and they are big, crunchy and sweet. We’re yet to have a summer season but we’re really excited for all the different variety of vegetables we’ll be growing,” they say.

The couple are currently working through the verification process for MPI certification, covering biosecurity and food safety. Their aim is to sell microgreens direct to cafés and restaurants – as well as the public – cutting out the middleman (and cost to the consumer) by being the distributor.

Karla says switching off is difficult, especially for Mitch. “The children and family time is by far the best way to pull us both away from the business, which can become all consuming, especially when we see how much customers are appreciating the variety and freshness.”

Their motivation comes from constant disappointment about the state of vegetables available in supermarkets and large stores; frequently months old and spoiling quickly. They say it’s not the fault of hard-working farmers who pour everything into growing a quality crop; it’s just a broken system.

Mitch gave up his lifestyle of 15 years of body building due to injuries and surgery, and instead found a passion in the soil, with inspiration coming from other YouTubers on channels dedicated to gardening.

“We want to change how people look at where their food comes from. We are growing on our own property, and our shed has been converted to a microgreens area and hydroponics. Our carport is now converted to a processing area, and we use our backyard for field produce.”

Mitch says café owners and chefs say their biggest pain point is inconsistency of quality and availability from traditional suppliers – and that’s something he’s very confident their microgreens can address.

“We want to build on 100 % transparency. Through our social media and YouTube channel, our community can follow the entire journey of their food from seed to harvest; the wins, learning curves, and the real daily hustle that goes into it.

“Plus, there’s a lot of science behind it. It’s so much more than just putting something in the dirt and watering it. I hold a Diploma in Business, am currently studying Horticulture, and I bring a bit of my bodybuilding mindset into the garden as well. I’m fascinated by the science, nutrition, and fine-tuning required to make things truly thrive,” says Mitch.

But, the couple says, “we are pouring every spare second we have into making this dream work.

att Paul is looking to swap his outdoor life in the treetops for politics, as longstanding local MP Andrew Bayly steps aside.

The Chatter asked him why he’s hoping to take his place.

Give us the inside story on Matt Paul Originally born in Bombay, I moved back to Pukekohe 22 years ago, having lived in South Auckland for most of my life. I attended Rosehill College and studied Arboriculture and Horticulture at Wintec in Hamilton.

After a few years working in the industry, including a season track cutting for the Department of Conservation in Hamilton, I started my first Arboricultural Business at the age of 23, servicing the wider Auckland and Waikato areas, before becoming a specialist arboricultural and landscape consultant 12 years ago.

Being an arborist sounds like a great job- why swap?

Yes, working as an arborist is a rewarding career. As a working arborist, I enjoyed time in the outdoors and being new places every day. Working in people’s backyards and in local parks and reserves, you really build an appreciation for our natural environment.

As a consultant, I‘ve had the privilege of helping create green spaces in new subdivisions and local park and playgrounds, while helping to shape our cities through roading and infrastructure planning.

However, through my career, I have seen how rules and regulations have begun to slow down our economy and make it much harder and more expensive for everyday New Zealanders to get things done. We’re all feeling that in our lives in one way or another!

When Andrew Bayly decided to retire, I thought this was a great opportunity to step in and – if I get into parliament help shape new legislation to make sure we get future laws

right for everyday people and improve existing legislation to get New Zealand moving again.

So, you’re heading into politics; were you always interested in politics- how did that come about?

While I have always had an interest in general politics, my involvement with the National Party began in 2018.

Since then, I have been heavily involved with the National Party Port Waikato team and served in various roles in the executive before my selection as the new candidate at the end of April.

Realistically, what difference do you think you’d make?

While I understand politics is tough, I feel that my career as a practical arborist, time as a business owner and employer, coupled with a history of solving complex problems can help me to support Port Waikato. I also understand that being an MP is a privilege and that one of the most important parts of the job is to advocate for local issues. Andrew has always been very available to locals, and I plan to continue that if I’m elected.

What would you like to see for the Waikato The Waikato Area, and especially North Waikato, continues to be an important part of New Zealand. We’re a supplier of high-quality produce and a growing economic engine home to industry.

The expanding industrial hub of Pokeno and new businesses such as the National Green Steel project in Hampton Down and Sleepyhead in Ohinewai, bring new opportunities for locals and provide a pathway for young people as they choose their careers.

Continuing to support new businesses and championing the strengths of Port Waikato to new industries can only strengthen our communities for the future.

Finally, what have been the biggest highlights/challenges of your life so far?

I feel fortunate to have had a number of meaningful experiences so far. A major highlight was spending my final year of high school in Denmark as a Rotary Exchange student.

That experience broadened my outlook, strengthened my sense of service, and helped set me on the path to standing as the National Party candidate for Port Waikato.

(I note with interest that the Mayor of Waikato District Council is Danish and I’m intending to catch up with him soon; no doubt we have some stories to share!)

Another highlight has been raising our two children with my wife in Pukekohe. We feel lucky to call north Waikato home, and it’s a great place to raise a family.

One of my biggest challenges was completing an Executive Master of Business through Massey University while working, running a business, and managing family commitments. It took discipline and perseverance, but it was also immensely rewarding and gave me skills and perspective I can carry into public service.

’m proud of the progress made by my colleagues and I as New Zealand’s National-led Government this parliamentary term.

In late 2023, the previous government left a dire economic landscape which has improved during our tenure; we’ve worked diligently to fix the basics to support the economic growth our country needs.

It’s encouraging to see our plan is working, though there is more to be done to build the future Kiwis deserve. We’re prioritising strengthening the economy, putting more dollars into Waikato families’ budgets, supporting businesses to employ more Kiwis, and keeping taxes low.

Our investment strategy across the economy and the services Kiwis need show measurably improved outcomes. Inflation was at a 32 year high of 7.3%; now, lowered interest rates are saving the average household $7,500 on their mortgage. Our trade agreements helped exports hit a record high, with an additional $12 billion in a two-year period. Business confidence has improved with manufacturing increasing at its fastest rate since 2021. Tourism has increased by 8%. Kiwis returning from Australia has jumped 14% in the past year.

Our targeted strategies to support businesses are seeing benefits. The tax incentive Investment Boost we initiated provides businesses more opportunity to invest in productive assets like machinery, tools, and equipment. Businesses can deduct 20% of the asset’s value from that year’s taxable income, along with normal depreciation. This improves cashflow and capability to upscale and

increase productivity. Our strategies foster growth and the possibility of more employment and higher wages, benefiting more New Zealanders.

Investing strategically in the services Kiwis need, such as health, education, law and order, and infrastructure is paying off. I recall the rise in violent crimes during the previous Labour government’s terms with nightly news reports and local Waikato community accounts of ram raids, shop owners defending their businesses, gangs terrorising communities, and Labour’s excuses. Our National-led Government cracked down on crime, investing in doubling Police on the beat, strengthening legislation for anti-social behaviour, capping sentence discounts, and restoring the Three-Strikes policy for re-offenders.

Investing in education is delivering measurable results. 176,000 more students are regularly attending school, 9 days out of 10. That alone is a marked difference from three years ago. Our revised curriculum means our precious children are getting the reading, maths, and core skill schooling they need. Our Waikato teachers are backed with professional development, and we’ve implemented more teaching support.

With standardised reports, parents can now clearly understand their child’s progress.

The results of Labours’ terms in government clearly showed that spending more, taxing more, and borrowing more didn’t work. Our disciplined, responsible fiscal management, and strategies of cutting red tape, slashing ineffective spending, and investing to support economic growth to keep taxes low is paying off. Our plan is benefiting families and businesses across the Waikato, and wider throughout

M ESSAGE FROM M AYOR A KSEL ON R ATES This follows a series of cost-saving initiatives, including pausing and stopping certain technology upgrades, managing staff vacancies and numbers, and major savings through procurement initiatives.

It’s difficult to state these in actual dollars as the value of the property and how that may have changed relative to others in the district also comes into effect.

The fine print For those connected to drinking water supply and wastewater services we can state the actual values and here the Fixed Charge increased by $142.20 (from $2,348.39 to $2,490.61 per year).

R

esidents and ratepayers across the Waikato District have now received their new rates invoice for the 2026/27 year and yes, these do look a little different; here’s why.

On 1 July 2026, water and wastewater services for our district became the responsibility of a jointly owned Hamilton City and Waikato District water entity IAWAI (Flowing Waters).

It’s not a private company, but a joint venture owned by the two councils on behalf of all ratepayers.

This means the new rates notice does look different to previous notices, because the charges for water are now listed separately on the same invoice.

It’s important to note that the way the fees are calculated for water and wastewater services hasn’t changed.

No rates invoices or increases are welcomed, and we know there’s some confusion about what might seem like new costs; but the services you receive and pay for haven’t changed- they’re just shown differently.

We all accept costs inevitably go up (you’ll see that on at the petrol pump, insurance, electricity or grocery bill). But we have worked very hard to reduce rates and have halved what would have been the proposed increase projected by the previous council.

The rates increase for 2026/27 is lower than central government’s proposed 4% rates cap. We managed to come in with a general rate increase 2.8% (with average targeted rates -excluding water and waste wateradding a further 1% for a total average of 3.79%).

For our semi-rural ratepayers who may have water supplied but have their own wastewater (septic tanks), the individual rates reflect this with a lower rate for water only. And for those who do not receive water or wastewater disposal, there should not be a charge for this on your bill.

In Waikato District we charge for the water you use (i.e. the volumetric charge), whereas some other councils just include an ‘estimated charge into their fees for all. That means someone in a single person household is being charged for the same ‘usage’ as a family of, say, 7). Charging only for what you use is fairer.

A household’s use of treated water increases by $0.15 per 1000L of water (from $2.59 to $2.74). If comparing these costs to Auckland charges, it’s important to note that Auckland has a volumetric charge for wastewater, set at 78.5% of the drinking water usage, that is often higher than their fixed charge. Here in the Waikato, there is no variable charge for wastewater, but a higher fixed charge instead.

All property owners pay rates to their local council, and these rates help keep the district running and fund the everyday services people often take for granted: including local roads, libraries, parks, cemeteries, footpaths and cycleways, swimming pools, rubbish and recycling, and emergency management responses. All these help shape the wellbeing of our communities and help foster a healthy, safe, and thriving Waikato district.

I understand any rates increase will be challenging for households and businesses already under pressure from the rising cost of living. Instalments along with the government’s rates rebate scheme initiative are in place for eligible ratepayers, and we will continue our focus on getting costs down across all we do.

GENER A L ELEC TIONS 2026

T

he 2026 general election approaches and candidates’ faces are posted on shiny signs around the Waikato region and district. But this election will be different.

Changes made by the National Government mean that this year voters must enroll before the election, and cannot enroll on the day.

The Electoral Amendment Act 2025, which passed its third reading in late 2025, has made several changes to the system. As well as removing on-the-day enrollment, meaning voters must enroll 13 days before election day, the Act introduced restrictions to offering free food and drink within 100 metres of a voting place.

For local electorates, Waikato, Port-Waikato, Taupo, Taranaki-King Country, and the Hauraki-Waikato Maori electorate, candidates have begun to appear.

Five have put their name forward for candidacy in the Waikato electorate so far. Port-Waikato has six MP candidates, Taupō has three, and Taranaki-King Country has four, The Hauraki-Waikato electorate has just two at this point.

Although numbers of MP candidates are looking lower in comparison to previous elections, candidate nominations may still come through before the deadline on October 8.

Voting places will be revealed three weeks before elections. Voters must be enrolled before October 25.

he Department of Conservation is using highresolution satellite images to detect the pest plant Cuscuta campestris(commonly known as golden dodder) within the Whangamarino wetland and at Lake Whangape.

Whangamarino is an internationally significant Ramsar wetland and faces a range of threats from invasive plants and animals.

DOC Technical Advisor Susan Emmitt says the trial project, undertaken by specialist contractor Fabian Döweler (Bushcraft Analytics), has used machine learning to develop a computer model able to recognise golden dodder within satellite images of the wetland.

High-resolution satellite images provide detail finer than one square metre per pixel, meaning individual objects such as small patches of golden dodder can be seen from space and located precisely on the ground.

All plants and animals reflect light in different ways. The satellite images in this study use part of the light spectrum not

visible to the human eye, including nearinfrared (NIR) wavelengths, which are particularly useful in identifying golden dodder from other wetland vegetation.

Computers identify and classify the distinctive light reflection pattern of particular plant species (spectral signature) captured in an image.

“This project is an example of remote sensing, allowing crucial conservation data to be gathered from a distance and at a large scale,” Susan says.

“DOC was able to request six specific satellite images of Whangamarino from various vendors to support the work.”

Part of Fabian’s brief was to determine how the use of these specific spectral signatures could identify golden dodder, and the minimum image quality needed.

“Using machine learning models for the analysis means golden dodder can be identified more rapidly and easily in satellite images particularly with the addition of more training data,” Fabian says.

The success of the project suggests the use of the technology could be scaled up to identify golden dodder and other pest plants across wider landscapes, he says.

A learner who sits quietly and shows little interest can easily be labelled as having a poor attitude while someone who regularly arrives late for lessons and has a patchy attendance can be dismissed as the course simply not being important enough to them.

But I’ve learned that things are rarely that straightforward. For example, the learner who appears uninterested may have spent years believing they aren’t very good at learning, so staying quiet becomes safer than participating and risking another embarrassing experience.

The person with inconsistent attendance may be juggling transport, family responsibilities or circumstances I know nothing about. When looked at that way, it is actually commendable that the person still keeps finding a way to come back in spite of the challenges.

Essentially, I’ve decided that when I don’t know the whole story, I will never begin with the explanation that thinks least of the person. And this isn’t simply about being kind – it’s also useful in a practical sense.

If I decide that someone isn’t participating because they don’t care, there isn’t much I can do with that conclusion.

I might become frustrated, lower my expectations or eventually stop investing as much effort in them. But if I consider whether they’re protecting themselves from another experience of failure, my response changes. I can make participation feel safer, create smaller opportunities for success and allow trust to develop.

A Thought to Carry With Us? I find that approaching it this way means that regardless of whether the assumption is accurate or wrong, it leaves room for something constructive to happen next. And this applies beyond the classroom as well. When someone doesn’t return our message or a colleague seems unusually abrupt, we don’t necessarily know why. But the mind doesn’t enjoy an unfinished story, so it supplies the missing explanation instead.

Perhaps the important thing to remember here is that neither the generous assumption nor the cynical one changes what actually happened but perhaps there is value in choosing an assumption that leaves room for understanding? Because that little bit of room may be exactly what someone needs to show us who they really are.

When we pick up a roaming dog, the first priority is to identify and reunite it with its owner. If the dog is registered or microchipped, we make every effort to contact the owner as quickly as possible.

The registration tag itself is simply a visible way for Animal Control Officers and members of the public to quickly identify that your dog is registered. The number on the tag, along with your dog’s microchip, is unique to your dog and can be used to identify your dog across New Zealand through the National Dog Database, no matter where it is found.

If we can’t locate the owner, the dog is taken to the pound where it receives food, water, shelter, (and medical care if needed) while we continue trying to reunite it with its family.

If a dog remains unclaimed after the required legal holding period of 7 days, ownership transfers to the council.

At that point, each dog is individually assessed. Wherever possible, suitable dogs are placed into our adoption programme to give them the chance to find a new forever home.

This time we cover what actually happens at the pound and some tips and ideas for a happy health canine companion.More coming next issue. do?

Our goal isn’t to issue fines. It’s to work together to encourage responsible dog ownership, improve animal welfare, and create a safer environment for everyone. We work on the 4 Es: Engage, Enable, Educate, and finally, Enforce.

Biggest community concerns?

1.

Roaming dogs; Dogs that wander can be injured, lost, or pose a risk to people, livestock and wildlife

2.

Poorly secured properties; broken fences or open gates

3.

Lack of socialisation and training.

Well-socialised, trained dogs are more confident, and less likely to develop behavioural issues.

What does Animal Control actually

A council’s Animal Control team plays an important role in keeping people and animals safe. It’s not simply picking up stray dogs, there’s lots more involved.

Our responsibilities include: 1. Responding to reports of roaming, aggressive, and nuisance dogs.

2. Reuniting lost dogs with their owners whenever possible.

3. Protecting animal welfare by responding to welfare concerns and ensuring dogs receive appropriate care.

4. Ensuring compliance with the Dog Control Act 1996 and local bylaws to promote responsible dog ownership in annual dog registration renewal and microchipping requirements.

5. Education through school visits, events, and public awareness programmes about safe interactions with dogs and responsible ownership.

6. Caring for impounded dogs and, where suitable, helping find them loving forever homes through adoption.

7. Supporting owners with advice and information.

8. Responding to wandering stock complaints on public roads.

Dogs receiving inadequate care; Every dog deserves access to fresh water, nutritious food, appropriate shelter, exercise, and vetcare.

Low vaccination rates; Keeping your dog’s vaccinations up to date protects them from serious diseases such as parvovirus (parvo). Parvo is highly contagious and especially dangerous for puppies and unvaccinated dogs.

Roaming dogs have a greater risk of contracting and spreading the virus.

Unregistered and un-neutered dogs; Legally, dogs are required to be registered from three months of age and then annually on 1 July.

Registration helps reunite lost dogs with their owners, while desexing helps reduce unwanted litters, the number of dogs entering shelters and pounds, aggression, and wandering.

What happens if Animal Control picks up my dog- How long before it’s euthanised?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that dogs are euthanised as soon as they arrive at the pound. That simply isn’t the case.

Our goal is always to reunite dogs with their owners first, and when that’s not possible, to give as many dogs as we

Sadly, not every dog can be safely rehomed. Dogs suffering from severe illness or injury, or those that pose a significant, ongoing safety risk to people or other animals that cannot be managed, may be humanely euthanised following careful assessment. We never make this decision lightly and it’s always considered a last resort.

Why does it cost so much to get my dog back?

Impound fees can feel expensive, but they’re not intended to punish dog owners or generate profit. They help cover the real costs involved in caring for and managing impounded dogs.

When a dog is picked up, we spend time responding to the call, safely catching and transporting the dog, checking for identification or a microchip, completing paperwork, and attempting to contact the owner.

Once at the pound, every dog receives food, fresh water, shelter, daily care, cleaning, health checks, and enrichment while it waits to be collected. These costs, along with maintaining the pound and staffing the service, all contribute to the fees.

The easiest way to avoid impound fees is to make sure your dog has secure fencing, is registered and microchipped, and receives plenty of exercise and enrichment to reduce the likelihood of roaming.

Why do I have to pay so much for dog registration when all I get is a tag?

Your registration fee pays for much more than the tag on your dog’s collar.

It helps fund services that keep our communities safe, including Animal Control Officers responding to roaming and aggressive dogs, animal welfare concerns, dog attacks, education programmes, compliance, pound operations, and updates to dog records on the National Dog Database (NDD).

It also helps support reuniting lost dogs with their owners, caring for impounded dogs, and running responsible dog ownership initiatives within the community, like the

By working together and promoting responsible dog ownership, we can create a safer, happier community for both people and their dogs. Small actions by owners can make a big difference in the lives of our four-legged friends.

TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE AND HAPPY WHILE YOU’RE OUT Heading off to work doesn’t have to mean a boring day for your dog! A few simple steps can help keep them safe, comfortable, and mentally stimulated until you’re home.

1. Provide plenty of fresh water and ensure they have access to shade or shelter throughout the day.

2. Keep them entertained with puzzle toys, treat dispensers, chew toys, or safe enrichment activities, 3. Exercise before you leave. A morning walk or play session can help burn off energy and encourage your dog to rest.

4. Create a safe space by removing hazards, securing fences, and ensuring they have a comfortable place to relax.

5. Leave some background noise such as a radio or TV on low volume if your dog enjoys the company of familiar sounds.

6. Spend quality time together when you get home. Walks, training, playtime, or simply relaxing together help strengthen your bond and keep your dog happy.

A little preparation each day goes a long way in ensuring your furry friend stays safe, healthy, and content while you’re at work.

he Hamilton Rugby League has had a varied existence over the years and has continually battled the ‘big brother/little brother’ syndrome. Even today, the crowds that attend a rugby league game in Hamilton are well down on crowds that attend rugby union games.

The neighbouring Lower Waikato (read South Auckland/Waikato) Rugby Football League (est. 1911) had its headquarters at Ngaruawahia originally, and games were spread through the northern area, including Huntly and the outlying coal-mining settlements of Rotowaro, Glen Afton, Pukemiro and Renown, with the rural farming outposts of Taupiri, Orini and Komokorau adapting.

Records show that on Monday, August 2, 1920, at 7.30pm, a first meeting was convened at the Hamilton swimming baths’ office “for the purpose of selecting a committee and forming a Rugby Football League Club”, comprising the districts of Taumarunui, Rotorua and Thames, with all clubs affiliated and having Hamilton City as its headquarters. Each area had delegates to represent it, and the election for the first committee resulted as follows: Patron, the Mayor, Mr JR Fow; President, Mr W Stevens; SecretaryTreasurer, Mr J Dowley; Committee, Messrs F Pearson, F Hawke, W Hurrell, R Woods, L Lord, W McDermott, F Innes, F Wilson, J Graham, S Ellis and M Randrup.

The first games were held at Hinemoa Park, just across the road from Rugby Park. The Vernel Bros earthmoving business helped develop that area with a horse and scoop and also utilised a private paddock near King Street. The Claudelands Showgrounds and Steele Park were other venues used.

By 1925, there were six teams involved: City Rovers, Athletic, United,

Frankton, Whitiora and Maritime – a couple of those names synonymous with Auckland clubs. There was also a need to become an incorporated body, and the Hamilton Rugby League Inc. came to be. This permitted players ‘of ability’ to represent the national team, known since the game’s establishment in New Zealand in 1908 as the All Golds.

Clearly, “All Golds” was a play on the amateur “All Blacks” name, but it was also a perceived insult to the players, criticising the arrangement where they were paid for time lost off work through injury or paid a portion of any touring party profits. The name “All Golds” is thought to have originated in a New Zealand newspaper in May/ June 1907, amidst editorial arguments over whether it was honourable for the proposed “professional All Blacks” team to be paid.

The Hamilton Rugby League Inc. struggled financially through those early years (what’s new? – ouch!), as illustrated by entries in minute books.

World War I and the Great Depression made sure everyone ‘struggled’. One year, the financial statement showed a debit balance of £1 17s 9d, and several attempts had been made to boost finances by minor 5s gambling plungers in the Art Union, but to no avail. As a desperate endeavour to stay afloat, the League joined with the Rugby Union and applied for a totalisator permit from the Waikato Trotting Club, with any profits being divided equally amongst the three bodies.

In reply, the then Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr RF Bolland, said, “While I am in entire sympathy with your League and the Rugby Union in your desire to erect suitable stands on the Hamilton Domain, I regret I cannot grant your request.” The reason given was that there were no spare trotting licences, all having been taken up by other clubs. However, the Minister granted permission for the League to raffle ‘works of art’ … (reminds one of having

to sell ‘chook raffles’ in the Huntly pub to raise funds for the grandstand at Davies Park in the 70s).

By 1929, support had fallen away so rapidly that Athletic and a new team, Albions, combined to become the Hamilton Rugby League representative team. It also transpired that it was around this time that Hamilton was combining with South Auckland/ Waikato teams to play rugby league.

A highlight in 1931 was the Australian Eastern Suburbs v Waikato game at Steele Park. So keen were the players to engage with Australian clubs that a Māori team from Huntly called Kia Ora was ‘brought in’ to keep the game alive in Hamilton.

Through the 50s, 60s and early 70s, Hamilton RL continued with a ‘hotchpotch’ of clubs that would start up with a hiss and roar and peter out over time.

Through the late 70s, such clubs as Chartwell Lions, Whatawhata Wolves, University, Tauira and Railways, and those further afield, including Cambridge Raiders, Kiokio Hunters, Te Kuiti Rams, Otorohanga Tigers and Waipa Wildcats, were all established but failed to hold numbers and had to disband.

In 1975, the Hamilton Rugby League was formed (again!) to control rugby league based in the city. Clubs were established and, as it became stronger, the New Zealand Rugby League felt a joining of the Hamilton and Waikato Rugby Leagues was desirable. Both leagues were in agreement over this matter, but it was delayed because, at that time, the Waikato Rugby League had built a new grandstand at Davies Park and was paying off ‘debt’, and the Hamilton Rugby League felt that it should not be involved in that financial burden. The Waikato Rugby League did not want to become involved in any similar venture in Hamilton either.

In 1982 and 1983, a trial joint oneround competition (known as ‘the Big Round’) was conducted by a small

committee, with both leagues retaining their own boards and competitions, because the idea was being promoted that the two leagues (Hamilton and Waikato) should combine to form a more teams/more variety concept. This was driven primarily by the Huntly/ Ngaruawahia clubs, but they struggled to find support within the Hamilton sides, initially because of the Davies Park grandstand debt.

On Monday, 12 December 1983, at the Waikato AGM in the Huntly United clubrooms, President George Dow vacated the chair to allow NZRFL President Ron McGregor the opportunity to instruct the meeting to elect the inaugural combined Waikato Rugby League that we know today.

Seventeen clubs (11 from Hamilton) were present, and the first elected members included: Patron, Dr Ash Symmons; President, Mr Ray Barlow; Secretary, Mr Johnson Raumati; Treasurer, Mr Andy Gamble. The committee comprised three northern delegates – R Tukiri, J Deacon and T Parsonage – and three southern delegates – B Muir, G Rehua and J Collins.

Common sense prevailed eventually and, by the 1984 season, the two estranged partners climbed into bed together and lived happily ever after … well, not quite! There was still an air of discontent.

In 1994, the Lion Red Cup swept the previously well-patronised NZRL provincial competition under the mat (read bed!), and more rejigging was yet to come. By 2002, a new sheriff rode into town and formed a de facto relationship. This was the year of the WaiCoaBay affair, which saw all the premier clubs of the Waikato, Coastline and Bay of Plenty provincial unions play a home-and-away series under the control and sponsorship of the NZ Rugby League. Travel and playing gear sponsorship ensured that this affair would signal a new era that would ultimately see all club teams partaking, but, as with any affair … the thrill dried up and so too did the money!

he club’s artificial turf has proved very popular and has led to an influx of people keen to play. With a new turf, a new committee and a new season, hopes are high for lots of positive action at 6 Waerenga Road this season.

It is the first time in the club’s history that the monthly open tournaments

have continued right through the year, as the artificial turf is playable in all weather. If it does rain, bowlers simply vacate the green until it stops.

The September tournament is sponsored by Carleys Transport and will be held on Tuesday, 15 September.

e welcomed 37 members, plus two new members, to our August meeting at the RSA. Competition winners Bloom: 1st Janet, 2nd Elizabeth, 3rd Gloria Fruit: 1st Elizabeth, 2nd Lorraine, 3rd Audrey Vegetable: 1st Audrey, 2nd Liz, 3rd Trish Preserve: 1st Rebecca, 2nd Joan, 3rd Denise We enjoyed a very interesting and informative talk with our guest speakers, Rebecca and Livie from Lifestyle Physio.

They talked to us about how to protect ourselves while working in the garden, lifting bags, digging and kneeling for long periods of time.

They shared some helpful exercises to improve strength and strengthen our bones.

Their advice was useful and reminded us that looking after our bodies is just as important as looking after our gardens.

If you ever go to the Huntly RSA, you may notice that the front garden has been freshened up with the planting of bromeliads. Pop out to the garden area at the back, where we have been busy tidying, potting plants and adding extra baskets and lots of colour. The RSA has put up a new shade roof, which will make it a cool area in the summertime.

A group of us visited David Young Bromeliads & Tropical Nursery in Drury, where we were blown away.

For next month’s meeting, we will be visiting Ambers Garden Centre in Cambridge. We will meet at the earlier time of 10am on Thursday, 3 September, at the Huntly RSA.

SAM Can you please introduce yourself to the wider community (where you grew up, school and year)?

My name is Samantha Lang and I am incredibly grateful to serve as one of the deputy head students this year. Growing up, I attended Mission Heights Junior and Senior College up to Year 10, where I served in a range of leadership roles, before transferring to Te Kauwhata College in 2023.

What does being a student leader mean to you, and what does it involve?

A student leader, to me, is someone who serves the school by listening and actively working towards the best outcome for everyone. They work without seeking recognition and genuinely strive to improve the school.

I strongly believe in the importance of guiding others towards their potential, leading by example, giving my absolute best to everything I do and encouraging others to do the same.

Everyone, from those who work behind the scenes to the incredible students and teachers, makes this place what it is. They are the reason I will forever look back and be extremely grateful for the incredible time I had and the memories I made here.

When not at school, what do you enjoy doing?

Outside of school, my free time and physical ability have been limited as a result of my health, meaning that the time I do have is spent very intentionally.

I deeply value the relationships I hold, so I am often spending time with my incredible friends and family.

Additionally, I’m someone who believes balance in life is vital, so when I am not studying, I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, watching rugby and pretty much always having a laugh.

When not at school, what do you enjoy doing?

Kamusta, I am Sage Tantingco, one of the 2026 deputy head students of Te Kauwhata College. I come from the Philippines. I immigrated to New Zealand in 2016, first moving to Auckland before transferring here in 2022.

What does being a student leader mean to you, and what does it involve?

What do you like about the role, and what do you hope to achieve?

When you look back, what do you think will be the highlights of the Te Kauwhata College experience?

Personally, the role of being a student leader isn’t about the title at all, but about the fact that students look up to you and are inspired to do the same. It involves helping out around the school, planning and creating ideas to further improve our family and kura and giving our peers a voice. This role has its ups and downs, such as managing workloads. However, it’s worth it in the end, especially when you look back and see how much your leadership and involvement have helped our kura.

How would you sum up your year so far?

As student leaders, we are trusted to balance our personal, academic and leadership lives. However, this has taught me that being in a student leadership team doesn’t mean I lead by my own design, but that I work together with my peers to strive for our betterment. On top of this, the role has led me to step out of my comfort zone and help influence others to do the same.

How would you sum up your year so far?

I would sum up my year as unexpected yet rewarding. Soon after finding out about my role, I suffered a bad brain injury and was diagnosed with a few medical conditions, one of which is POTS. This has meant I have had to adapt and balance my health with my responsibilities and ambition. I have found working alongside the other incredible leaders to be so fulfilling.

Something specific that I like about this role is the ability to give students a voice and the capabilities we have to improve our kura. Other than that, I also enjoy productive planning, setting up meetings, coming up with ideas and leading, teaching and supporting the students.

Outside of school, I enjoy hunting and trying all different sorts of activities and hobbies, such as art, volleyball, sewing, badminton, cooking and baking.

Aside from that, I also enjoy hanging out with my friends.

What are your plans for 2027?

My plans for 2027 are to hopefully get into university. However, I am not too sure which course to take, but it will definitely be something to do with creativity or the arts.

When you look back, what do you think will be the highlights of the Te Kauwhata College experience?

Looking back at my journey at this school, I have memories that I will never forget and bonds that will last a lifetime.

As I approach the end of my last year of high school, I have realised that school isn’t as bad as people make it seem. Of course, there will always be tough days every now and then, and high school is the time when we find ourselves.

At this school, I was able to attend my first-ever national tournament with my volleyball team and push myself further, both mentally and physically.

NEWS FROM THE TE K AUWH ATA COM M UNITY GA R DEN

ur Community House, Community Garden and local Primary School are now Community Compost partners, thanks to funding from Waikato Districts Council’s Waste Minimisation Fund.

Together we are putting special efforts into recycling food and other plant waste to make compost. There are now large plastic bins on the school fenceline in Wira St for anyone in the area to bring their food scraps from home. They can dump them into the bins for free, saving money, saving the helping the environment and supporting

the community. These bins are emptied into the hot compost system by our community compost coordinator and students in the Enviro Group.

All food waste is welcome in the compost except seashells. We would like to eliminate all food scraps from the Hampton Downs Landfill. Food scraps in the landfill use up valuable space and produce greenhouse gases when breaking down.

Precious compost from hot compost system is presently being used to extend the soil space for growing vegetables at the Community Garden.

Our vegetables have been growing so well, and we have had such a good weekly harvest that the gardeners

wanted to grow more food. We also have a good team of happy gardeners who feel well rewarded when the Pataka Kai shelves are cleared by community members who value having access to free fresh vegetables to eat.

The compost is also being raked over grass around our fruit trees, extending the garden and making life easier for the mowing contractors.

On a Tuesday morning while we were all standing admiring our handiwork, we came up with an idea to have a fun guessing game and invite school children and the public to tell us how many cabbage plants might be growing in our splendid community garden.

Emma from Te Kauwhata Primary was the winner with a guess of 394. Emma

won a box of mixed vegetables and fresh eggs to enjoy with her family.

So far, my year has been good. I’m working towards my Level 3 credits, and I’ve already completed one induction camp with the services academy. I’m currently preparing for another. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I have five siblings, with one more on the way, so family is a big part of my life.

FELLON GILLIES Kia ora, my name is Fellon Gillies.

I’m 17 years old and currently a Year 13 student at Huntly College. I grew up in Te Kauwhata, where I attended Te Kauwhata Primary and then Te Kauwhata College before moving to Huntly College, which has become the best school for me.

Leaving my previous school was one of the biggest turning points in my life.

While I was there I struggled to see a future for myself with little support. I didn’t have the encouragement or opportunities I needed to succeed. If I had stayed, I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Moving to Huntly College changed everything for me; it gave me support, belief, and opportunities that helped

me. Family has been my biggest support and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

Being a student leader/ Head Girl, means a lot to me. To me, leadership is about helping others, supporting people through tough times, and trying to make a positive difference in someone’s life. It involves being a role model, listening to others, and standing up for what is right.

I enjoy being someone who students can come to and trust.

What I love most about my role is the opportunity to help bring back the things Huntly College once had, like Kapa Haka, dance groups, and strong sports teams. I’m also part of the Services Academy, which has given me opportunities to attend camps with other schools. At these camps, I often hear negative opinions about my school, and it can be hard. People judge Huntly College and think it’s a place for “bad kids” who won’t achieve.

But that’s not what I see. I see strong, resilient students who are trying their best despite challenges in their lives.

Our school is a safe space for young people who need support, and our teachers genuinely care. They listen,

PATRICK KAIHE WICHMAN Kia Ora my name is Patrick I am a year 12 at Huntly College, I grew up in Huntly born and raised. I am Cookislander, Samoan, Maori and pride myself to be a part of such a rich culture. Being a student leader to me means I am able to nurture our younger students into being themselves and a version of themselves they are proud to be future, past and present. Being a student leader involves being able to lead self for one who cannot lead themselves cannot lead others. What I like about being a student leader is that I am able to display my concerns and get real student input to better our kura.

I hope to achieve an environment where students feel safe for self expression such as culture, art, and personality. I want our students to be able to display their concerns and get real student input to better our kura.

GENESIS GA INS FA ST-TR ACK A PPROVA L FOR 220 MWP SOL A R FA R M AT FOXTON

G

enesis has received fast-track approval for its proposed 220MWp Foxton solar farm, marking a significant step forward for one of the company’s largest renewable generation projects.

Located around 10km north of Foxton in the Manawatū-Whanganui region, the 436-hectare solar farm will comprise around 150,000 solar panels and is expected to generate 345GWh of renewable electricity each year, enough to power approximately 43,000 households.

Genesis Chief Operating Officer Tracey Hickman said Foxton is an ideal location for a solar farm with its abundant sunshine.

“We’re really pleased to receive approval for Foxton. It moves another significant renewable project forward as we invest in the generation New Zealand will need for a more secure and increasingly renewable electricity system.”

Foxton is one of several solar projects.

Genesis is progressing as part of its longterm growth strategy to expand renewable generation, support demand growth from its nearly 500,000 customers, and strengthen security of electricity supply. Together with Tihori, Rangiriri, Leeston and the operating Lauriston solar farm, Foxton will help grow Genesis’ renewable generation portfolio and support New Zealand’s transition to a more renewable energy future

SERVICE AC A DEMY A DVA NCED LE A DERSHIP COURSE 2026

n the 2nd of August 2026, two members of the Huntly College Services Academy were given the opportunity to attend the Advanced Leaders course with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Youth Development Unit (YDU) at Whenuapai Airbase.

The course spanned 6 days, with academies all over New Zealand attending. This Advanced Leaders course consisted of multiple tasks that tested our individual strengths as leaders.

Examples of these tasks included constructing a 14x14 tent, collaborative

leadership while pairs were blindfolded, and applying personal skills to a task.

Other aspects of leadership within the course were high levels of personal dress, maintaining a high standard of cleanliness within the barracks, and upholding personal discipline throughout the camp. The camp had 2 summative assessments and a drill assessment.

The formative assessments were a quick look-over or practice for our summative assessments, which were more comprehensive and important than the formative assessments. Our routine was always the same, despite the different activities each day, such as: morning routine, breakfast, lunch, and dinner timings, along with night routine as well. Throughout the camp, we met

new leaders and learnt how to work alongside them, using their individual strengths in a task. Made some good friendships and learnt new things from each one of them. Maintaining discipline as leaders is not so different from when you’re just a trainee, but there are some key differences.

Being at this 6-day course, we learnt to strive for greatness as a leader and how to apply it in school and our daily lives. We used our strengths as one and achieved multiple tasks, made friendships along the way, and took charge of our future.

hen winter settles in, there’s nothing quite like a big pot of something delicious bubbling away on the stove or a comforting dish shared around the table. This month a few locals to share their favourite winter warmer recipes. Cosy RecipesI’ve &asked Events and crowd-pleasing dishes they love to cook, eat and share when the days are cold and the nights call for something hearty.

JAKE’S SLOW COOKER BEEF SHORT RIBS Jacob Barham from Raglan Top Cut Butchery shares his family short rib recipe. He believes beef short ribs are criminally underused when it comes to slow cooker meals. They’re rich, packed with flavour and become incredibly tender after a long, slow cook. This recipe comfortably serves 2-3 people. Simply increase the quantities if you’re cooking for a larger crowd.

1–2 carrots, thickly slice Ingredients: 1 tsp crushed garlic 700g –1kg beef short ribs 1 sprig fresh rosemary 2–3 cups beef stock 1 bay leaf Olive oil Meat rub of your choice (we recommend Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste Ahika.The.Tahi, Rum & Queue Rib Cornflour mixed with a little cold water, if Rocker or Rum & Queue Intensify) needed, to thicken the gravy 1 packet Maggi Beef Casserole Slow To serve, creamy mashed potatoes with Cook Recipe Base 1 large brown onion, roughly diced green beans, or steamed rice.

Method: • Coat the beef short ribs generously with your chosen meat rub. Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan, or use the browning function on your slow cooker if it has one. Add the crushed garlic, then sear the ribs on all sides until well browned, turning every 30 secs or so for about 5 mins.

• In a jug, combine 2 cups of beef stock, 1 cup of water & the Maggi Beef Casserole Slow Cook Recipe Base. Stir until well combined.

• Transfer the browned short ribs to the slow cooker & pour over the stock mixture. Add the onion, carrots, rosemary & bay leaf. Cover & cook on Low for approx 8 hrs, or until the meat is tender & falling away from the bone.

• Carefully remove the beef & vegetables from the slow cooker & transfer them to a serving dish. Discard the rosemary sprig & bay leaf.

• Pour the cooking liquid into a pot & simmer for 15–20 mins to reduce & intensify the flavour. Season with salt & freshly ground black pepper to taste.

If you enjoy a stronger garlic flavour, stir in a little extra crushed garlic. If required, whisk in the cornflour mixture until the gravy reaches your preferred consistency.

• Pour the gravy over the beef & vegetables, then serve with creamy mashed potatoes & green beans, or steamed rice.

DARIUS’ TRADITIONAL GERMAN BREAD DUMPLINGS (SEMMELKNÖDEL) Darius Paul, from Germany’s Palatinate region, is sharing this recipe on behalf of Raglan Artisan Bread. It’s a hearty, warming dish that makes delicious use of leftover sourdough. These traditional German bread dumplings, known as Semmelknödel, are comforting and satisfying, especially when served with a rich, creamy mushroom sauce. They’re also a great way to give day-old sourdough a second life.

Makes approximately 8 dumplings (2 servings)

RURAL MEETING

Ingredients: Bread Dumplings (Semmelknödel) ½ loaf leftover sourdough bread, diced 150ml milk, warmed 1 small onion, finely diced 1 egg Butter, for sautéing ACT Agriculture spokesman Salt, to taste

Mushroom Sauce 300g mixed mushrooms, cleaned & sliced 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 Tbsp butter or oil 50ml dry white wine 100ml cream Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste Fresh chives, chopped, for garnish

Preparation: 11am, Friday 18 September Make the dumplings • Place the diced sourdough in a large bowl & pour the warm milk over it.

• In a small pan, sauté the diced onion in butter until translucent. Add the warm onion to the bread mixture, cover & leave to sit for 15 mins, allowing the bread to absorb the moisture.

• Mix in the egg and a pinch of salt. Knead everything together well until a cohesive dough forms, then leave to rest for another 10–15 mins.

• Test-cook a small dumpling by dropping it into simmering salted water. If it holds together well, shape the remaining mixture into equal-sized dumplings.

Tip: Sourdough has a firmer crust & denser crumb than a traditional bread roll, so if the mixture feels a little too dry to hold together after resting, add an extra tablespoon or two of warm milk.

Authorised by C. Purves, • Gently simmer the dumplings in salted www.act.org.nz water for 10 mins. Do not allow the water to boil vigorously.

Make the mushroom sauce • In a pan, sauté the shallot in butter or oil until softened.

• Add the sliced mushrooms & sear over high heat until browned.

• Deglaze the pan with the white wine and allow it to reduce.

• Pour in the cream & simmer until the sauce thickens and becomes creamy.

• Season with salt, freshly ground black pepper & freshly chopped chives to taste.

• Serve the dumplings in a large bowl, generously covered with the mushroom sauce. They’re delicious served with a side salad dressed with herb vinaigrette & a glass of Pinot Noir.

For different variations, try adding fresh herbs, grated nutmeg or diced bacon to suit your taste.

TK REPAIR CAF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Waikato Regional Council advises that under Resource Consent 124871 spraying of pest plants growing in aquatic and semi-aquatic locations will continue over the next three months.

Pest plants to be sprayed are listed in the Regional Pest Management Plan and include (but are not limited to): alligator weed, Manchurian wild rice, sagittaria, Senegal tea, spartina and yellow flag iris. Herbicides to be used are haloxyfop, imazapyr, metsulfuron-methyl and triclopyr. Application method is location dependent and may be by helicopter, gun and hose, mistblower or knapsack.

Operational areas are spread throughout the region and include (but are not limited to): • Lakes Whangape and Waikare • Te Otamanui Lagoon

Repairers Electrical – small appliances, hair dryers, heaters etc Sewing – mending, alterations etc General repairs - toys, jewellery, coffee tables etc Technical – phones, laptops Tool Sharpening Bicycles Clocks, watches

Spraying is weather dependent and will occur during daylight hours on any day, including weekends but excluding public holidays.
