Jake: I have been here for 15 years but I will never be a local. I am happy at the moment with whatever happens, as long as local iwi are consulted and are a huge part of the process. I hate seeing people drift in and tell locals what’s wrong with their town or how to change it for the better, and its happening on a daily basis. One of the main reasons Raglan is unique is because the locals here are so passionate about keeping progress in check.

Geoff: Would love to see apartment style living in Raglan CBD and the redevelopment of Wi Neera Street into park and bike lanes throughout town, linking in ocean beach and the wharf. What I don’t want is chain stores or large multinational franchises coming to town.

Kelly: From a business perspective, I am a fan of locals supporting locals.

Perhaps a space which accommodated a higher number of smaller shops to encourage those smaller local based entrepreneurs?

From a user perspective it would also be nice to strike a balance between efficiency for people going about their day to day, and nice spaces which reflect the seaside pace of life for those with a bit more time on their hands. Not to mention the parking... We could benefit from a community lead plan for the future of the CBD, which considered the whole at once.

Ro: If developers have taken over the prime Bow Street Motors spot then lets hope that they build something quirky and interesting that will add to the charm of Raglan.

More retail would be good, to include more galleries and locally made fashion, products or food. Making special rental rates for the winter season would help to make a business viable. What we don’t need is negative attitudes to progress but good ideas and enthusiasm to keep Raglan on the map and make it an enjoyable place to visit and live.

Bob: The CBD should have its primary role as shopping, service and the social hub for the community. Also any development should retain the character of the Raglan town centre and maintain the two-storey limit within the CBD. Eve: My opinion on change really depends on what has changed and if it’s practical or just makes things harder.

With the new buying of businesses as long as it isn’t a fast food place like McDonald’s or similar businesses and it adds to our community, then I’m all for it!

John: We’ve got Volcom, Electric and the Tiny Tiny Bread Shop, but could do with a walkway from the footbridge to Electric and from Bow St to Wallis St, all fitting in with a boutique shopping concept.

Bow St ends at the harbour, but walking there from The Depot is full of hazards and could be much more attractive.

Finally, can I put in a plea for a fast food cafe like Ward Street’s ‘Vegan Café’? http://ww I often meet Raglan people there. It’s quick, cheap, tasty and environmentally friendly.

Raglan family of three were packing their bags this week after an unexpected invitation to play a support role to the glittering Emmy Awards in Los Angeles mid-month. But rather than being in line for any small-screen honours themselves, they’ll be there promoting a line of their own.

Called Cocolove, it’s a range of products – of both skincare and edible treats – created from raw coconut that the Manu Bay-based McCullough family imports from Fiji. They’re busy now getting 150 promotional gift baskets ready for display at a luxury gifting event called Honoring the Emmys, which courts celebrities in LA for the prestigious American television industry awards.

A “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” is how 26-year-old Morgan LaShelle McCullough described the upcoming trip last week from her stepmum’s tastefully renovated bach, which has expansive coastal views beyond an enticing infinity pool.

Morgan told the Chronicle she’s never been to LA before and to be able to take her skincare range of body butters, scrubs and lip balms to the States only a few months after launching Cocolove Organics online is “exciting” to say the least.

The invitation to show her products at the Emmys event came completely out of the blue, she said, about seven weeks ago via an email from a company in LA called Celebrity Connected. “It was through the promotional work I do on Facebook.”

At first suspicious however, Morgan checked the company out to make sure it was legitimate – then decided to take

the opportunity and “promote all our products”.

To date she’s had 1500-odd ‘likes’ and 10 to 15 weekly orders through her Cocolove Organics’ Facebook page, while stepmum Michelle – who set up the original Cocolove page – has recently scored a coup with wee bags of raw coconut candy now on sale locally at The Herbal Dispensary downtown.

“I’m the beauty part (of the company),” Morgan explains of her skincare range which relies heavily on virgin coconut oil.

Meantime Michelle’s been busy the past few years inventing healthy Cocolove treats – all dairy and gluten-free – like milkshakes, yoghurt, granola and candy from frozen or dehydrated coconut “meat”, milk and water.

“Coconut is my favourite food and drink on the planet,” Michelle enthuses.

Unsurprisingly it’s been the mainstay of her diet while living until recently in Hawaii, where the fruit grows abundantly.

“We’ve (all) been living on coconuts for years,” adds husband John who meantime has been to-ing and fro-ing between New Zealand and Fiji where he’s involved in the logging industry.

But more recently it’s his Island Coconut Oil company that’s taken off, and from which Michelle’s Cocolove treats and now Morgan’s Cocolove Organics have been born.

John believes the Emmys honouring event will be “an excellent marketing opportunity” and knows of one other company – FIJI Water – that got started the same way.

Cocolove is a family business, he insists, part owned by “our Fijian family” and supporting isolated outer

island communities. Making and marketing coconut products is both sustainable and commercially viable, he points out, although dependant on village generators and shipping which is less than reliable.

Morgan says her father’s always brought “copious” amounts of coconut oil home for Christmas and she’s “tinkered” with ways of using it. “Let’s just say I haven’t had to buy soaps for a while,” she laughs.

But it was only on moving to Raglan from Nelson this year that the enterprising single mum really thought about the original Cocolove brand Michelle had started, and began researching the product herself.

She wanted to capitalise on the oil’s medicinal and health qualities by including it in her beauty plan. “And I wanted it to be affordable for people like me.”

Cocolove soaps are all 100 percent coconut oil mixed with organic ingredients like dried mandarin peel – good for acne – ginger and vanilla bean. A sugar scrub is made of whipped coconut oil, shea butter and coconut sugar.

One of the body butters uses hemp seed and avocado; another adds apricot kernels. There’s a bentonite clay face mask and a lip balm using beeswax.

The family’s on task for the big trip ahead, but just before they head off to LA there’s Sunday week’s Creative Market in Stewart Street to look forward to. “We’ll come with our truck, our beauty products and some food,” says Michelle, who’s booked the Old School’s kitchen from which to prepare her coconut treats.

Run by the Raglan Horticultural Society, the competition attracted good entries and a steady flow of viewers at the Union Church Hall on Saturday.

There were five main sections in the one-day show, including cut flowers and floral art, but it was the 56 entries in the four children’s sections that impressed society president Barbara O’Doherty.

“The children came up trumps this time,” Barbara said. “They outdid the adults in effort, I think.”

Will Hunter won the sand saucer section, his sister Rosa won the wild flower jam jar arrangement, Ocean Burke won the miniature garden and Shanti McCoyHeaton won the aqua jar section.

The vegetables entered in this year’s three vegetable categories, however, were “not wonderful” due to the weather.

“The broccoli had peaked too soon – we’d eaten it!

It’s just the luck of the draw with the weather,” Barbara said.

The competition was hot in the multi-media section, which attracted 19 different entries. The winner was Tracy Brechelt with her Transplant creation, which involved red dye drips reflecting on arun lilies.

“It was fascinating to see how people interpreted it,” Barbara said of the popular multi-media category.

The society wanted to thank all those who entered, came to view the entries or helped organise the event - including local auctioneer Julie Hanna, who made small wreaths to give to every child who entered, and made an owl from flowers that was later auctioned for $25.

Karioi. Organised by Raglan-based outdoor recreation events company Jaunt Events, it will be the third Raglan Karioi Trail this year.

The 24km race is still the steepest race of that length in New Zealand, with an elevation of 1850 metres, and is technically difficult because of the steep and rugged terrain.

“It’s up and down all the time,” says Jaunt Event’s Francois Mazet.

“But you get a beautiful view from the side of the mountain.”

The race will start and finish on the Swan farm on the Ruapuke side of the mountain and runners will have to contend with bush, mud, roots, rocks, climbing chains and ladders and some gravel road along the way.

“It’s a big challenge. It’s hard,” Francois concedes. “That’s why you need quite a bit of training.”

The event is also well patronised by local sponsors. Francois puts this down to the good atmosphere on race day, with a free bbq, beers and music at the finish line helping generate that.

“We have more sponsors this year and everyone in the community has really tried to help,” Francois says.

“It’s the good image of the race and they want to be associated with that.”

What’s the benefit of living in Raglan?

Instead of hearing constant mechanical noise and constant smog, you can hear the waves and smell salt in the air instead, just being by the sea side tends to remind me that things are bigger than me and my petty problems.

How could Raglan be improved?

There isn’t many ways Raglan could be improved, Raglan is a corner in paradise although sometimes people get caught here and don’t have any chance of getting out and seeing what the rest of the world is like to realise how amazing Raglan is.

Best thing about social media?

Social media allows people to connect with each other and communicate, I also find that it exposes me to new ways of looking at things and new ideas.

Worst thing about social media?

The worst thing about social media is that it allows people to hide behind their words and their technology, you can never fully trust that what the person is saying is true, people put façades and masks of themselves on social media, never what they are actually like.

Who should run the country?

I honestly don’t know, but I think young people should have a representative in parliament and a way for people to hear their voices and opinions on what is happening in their country.

What is the biggest issue facing the world right now?

Climate change, We are past the point of return, in terms of CO2 production. We are two degrees away from everything we know falling apart.

The country you would most like to visit?

Japan and Canada in winter. I’ve heard the powder is amazing.

If you were stuck in an elevator for 24 hours with one person – who would you like that person to be?

A stranger. That way I can meet someone new, even though it could backfire and leave me very annoyed.

Best book you’ve ever read?

Whenever I read a book it becomes the best book I’ve read, since the last one.

Best movie you’ve ever seen?

Inception. I like being confused during movies.

Nana’s roast beef and vegetables, I could never get sick of it.

Well I would like to think that I’m one of those super futuristic cars but in reality I am probably a 1957 Chevrolet.

Um most creepy thing actually. I can guarantee that if you show me a scary movie I will be the one hiding under the blanket the whole time.

A hammock and an unlimited supply of books.

How is God real for me? To be honest I faced. But God has been my constant. He have always known God in my life, from is the small whisper in the night that tells day dot even. Our gun had been nestled quietly since then close to the club’s boundary until a couple of weeks ago when it found itself, with the assistance of Raglan Engineering, moving closer to the club’s building.

The 25 pound field gun was designed in 1936 and was a significant British field gun during WWII. By the end of the war 12,000 had been manufactured.

Weighing in at 3,600 pounds it fired 25 pound (11.5 kg) shells to a range of over 12,000 metres and had a crew of six assigned to its operation and care. Rate of fire was

five to six rounds per minute.

The 16th field regiment fired more than 750,000 rounds from their 25 pounders during the Korean War. Unlike infantry regiments the artillery do not have regimental colours; its colours are the guns themselves. The artillery do not have battle honours; instead its single battle honour is the one word UBIQUE (everywhere) which features on their badges which, translated from Latin Quo Fas Et Gloria Ducunt means ‘Where Right and Glory Lead’.

The first NZ unit to have 25 pounders was the 5th Field Regiment Royal New Zealand Artillery in August 1940 and the gun is still used by the NZ Army for ceremonial purposes as a funeral gun carriage.

Raglan Chamber - What have we been up to?

T

he Chamber has been buzzing away through the winter months, working on new projects with various community partners and developing new strategies to represent Raglan businesses in the best way possible. The Chamber is excited to announce these projects in the coming months.

After a great AGM in July, the Chamber welcomed Morgan Morris and Lisa Thomson to the Chamber Board. Dave Currie was reinstated as Chair for the 2015-2016 year, along with Geoff Kelly as co-chair.

Angela Williams, Charlie Young, Steph Philps, Bronwyn Lowe, Dave Hanna and Colin Hodkinson will join them for the coming year.

The Raglan Chamber is excited to start up Chamber Happy Hours in September, along with the continuation of monthly breakfast events hosted at The Shack. September’s breakfast features Kiri Goulter, the CEO of Hamilton & Waikato Tourism. You’re invited to breakfast on Tuesday, 8 September at 7:30am sharp at The Shack for a great, informative morning. bumper 2015 for Raglan Junior Soccer has seen 18 teams running around the domain this winter with 7 of our players being invited to join the Waikato Skills Centre (which is the new name for the reps).

This has seen their family’s making extra trips over the divvy for weekly practices plus four trips to chilly Rotorua for Sunday tournaments.

We’re also happy to say that former club members Adi-Grace Mooar (RAS), Alex Carter (Boy’s High) and Jet Hughes (Peachgrove Int) continue to represent Waikato at U13 level.

Plans are already under way for Raglan’s Christmas in the Park to be held on 6th December.

We have some great acts lined up including locals. As has been the case in the past our goal is to have a Christmas event that brings the community together for a fun-filled celebration to remind us of the reason for the Christmas season, in what can otherwise be a very busy time. Any individuals or community groups that are interested in being involved please let me know.
