Geoff: I think we could have spent 26 million on a lot other things than a flag debate for instance the the health system or education system . Shouldn't the first question be: do we want to change the flag ? I am not convinced either way with regards to changing the flag but I am convinced we need to change our health care and education sectors so maybe more focus on these and less on the trivial.

Bob: What a waste of money and process is inconsistent with public opinion. What about the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II that is unfolding before our eyes? How about putting more money into affordable housing within the regions?

Eve: Personally I don't think we need a new flag I think it's a waste of NZs money and it could deffinately be spent in more needed areas. And if the flag does change we are all going to have to get new licenses with the new flag on it.

Imagine how long that would take.. If we were going to get a new flag my vote would be for the new Red Peak flag based on a Maori story.

Are you for or against a new flag?

Do you think any of the four designs that have been released represent NZ? …alternatively, should Kiwi’s even be debating over a flag or are there more important things to attend to?

Kelly: No I don't think the flag options represent NZ. And it seems like an excessive amount of money to be spent on an issue that the public didn't call for. Which seems to be just another example of our current governments listening capabilities - or should I say lack of.

Ro: Hooray! At last we have the chance of a new flag that will identify us to the rest of the world.

The past is our history and nothing will change that but as we move forward in these rapidly changing times we need to make our own mark on the world stage with a flag that will clearly be ours. Lets shake off the Colonial shackles and stand out from the crowd. As a senior I give my vote to the black and white with our silver fern. Strong, stylish and proud. Wouldn't it look great fluttering from the flag poles at the Olympics!

And what about the National Anthem (dirge!) should we consult Dave Dobbin or Lorde?

John: In March the government voted down a plan to pay for free breakfasts and lunches in all decile 1 and 2 schools. it would have cost $10 to $14 million a year. Kaumatua visit historic waka sites

Part of the kaumatua group at Avananui Passage, Ngatangiia Harbour, the departure point of ancestral waka to Aotearoa.

Visiting this sacred site, which commemorates the ‘vaka’ (Cook Islands’ name for ‘waka’), was just one of the many things local kaumātua did when they visited Rarotonga recently for the Cook Islands’ 50th anniversary of self-governance.

More than 20 kaumātua from a group based at Poihakena Marae went on the 10-day trip, after much fundraising and organisation, to attend the celebrations and support a country holding special significance for Māori.

Many Māori and political leaders from New Zealand also attended the celebrations, which coincided with the 25th coronation jubilee of Pā Ariki, the queen of the Tākitimu district in Rarotonga who had a strong link with many Māori.

Sheryl Tukiri Haumaha said visiting the sacred sites on Rarotonga associated with the waka of Tainui, Tākitimu, Aotea, Te Arawa, Tokomaru, Kurahaupō and Mataatua was a major highlight of the trip

the anniversary celebrations and to give kaumātua the experience of going overseas, as some had never left New Zealand before.

Now they were keen to do it again, and were thinking of going overseas every second year, then going to the kaumātua kapa haka competitions in Wellington every alternate year.

“They’ve lifted their sights a bit now.

Before, the furtherest afield we got was Hamilton,” Sean said. “We know now that we can raise the funds. We just need to set a goal and a target and that’s it.”

The visit was personal for Sean, whose grandfather, Edward Ellison, spent many years in Rarotonga as a doctor and chief medical officer. Ellison received the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal in 1935 and an OBE in 1938 for his services to the Polynesian people.

Sean was asked to provide a picture of his grandfather for a new museum that was opened at Pā Ariki’s palace.

“After being there, [I believe] we did originate from there. I wouldn’t have known that if I hadn’t gone there,” Sheryl said.

“All the old people [in Rarotonga] would say ‘welcome home’ when they knew we came from here.”

As well as learning a lot of history, she discovered the islands’ culture and language was similar to Māori.

She also discovered a link with Raglan - a stadium in Rarotonga with the name Te Ara Karioi. “So we got the name from them and brought it to our mountain.”

She loved the music that played every night during the celebrations, the “beautiful” anniversary parade, the hula competitions, the cultural classes the kaumātua took, the 40km/h speed limit on the island, the singing at church, the fact the locals didn’t have to pay rates… and the list goes on.

“It was home away from home. It was just awesome, and so laid back.”

“We’ve made a pact that if anyone wins Lotto they’ve got to shout all of us to go back over,” Sheryl said.

Rolling, rolling, rolling… Raglan Roast is going places aglan Roast is going even further R afield, and it is a little homemade roaster that is taking it there.

The local coffee roasting and cafe company has recently owned another café in Napier, Gisborne, Kaikoura and Wellington, in addition to the one already operating in Nelson, the two others in Wellington, the one in Te Uku and two in Raglan.

“Everywhere we go we seem to get traction. Everyone seems to love us,” explained co-owner Tony Bruce.

Further cafes were planned around New Zealand, with Raglan Roast sticking to provincial centres and avoiding Auckland.

“Next year we’ll be rolling everywhere,” Tony said. “I figure we could do 100 [cafes] around New Zealand pretty easily – maybe

more.”

“Then it’s Hawaii and California and from there, the world’s our oyster.”

And a little roaster was going to help Raglan Roast get there.

Raglan Roast had developed and built its own unique mini roaster “in the back shed”, and this was currently being used at the Te Uku shop to roast the three types of beans it used.

The business had another two of these mini roasters, but next year planned to build another 100 so each Raglan Roast café could have its own roaster. This would streamline the process from the current situation of roasting the beans in Raglan and shipping them to each separate business.

Tony had even coined a new word for the future Raglan Roast café operator –

‘broaster’ – a barista who could make a good coffee and roast his or her own beans using one of the mini roasters.

“The broaster makes coffee and when he’s not making coffee, he’s roasting. The definition will be in the dictionary soon,” Tony joked.

The difference with Raglan Roast cafes, compared to other businesses in the competitive cafe market, was its low budget, quick-off-the-ground approach.

“In Wellington, everyone [café owners] does $1 million shop fits and spends six months to a year building them,” Tony explained. “We just rock in there, put up a couple sheets of plywood and we’re selling coffee the next day.”

Working together achieves more: Tourism Chief

aglan tourism operators R have been advised to work collaboratively and pool resources for greater effectiveness.

Kiri Goulter, chief executive of Hamilton and Waikato Tourism, said the move towards collaborative investment had to come from operators within the community.

She told Tuesday’s Raglan Chamber of Commerce meeting that the key thing was to identify what the collaboration wanted to achieve, then pool resources and develop a simple plan.

Working in clusters made the tourism organisation’s job “so much easier”, and combining forces and resources meant achieving more reach in the tourism market place.

“It’s all about partnerships and collaborations. We all need to work together because it’s a really hard market out there,” she told Raglan business owners at the meeting.

It already worked with a strong cluster group from Waitomo – one of the four icons of the Waikato, along with the “premier attraction” of the Hobbiton Movie Set Tours in Matamata, the Hamilton Gardens and Raglan – and the opportunity was there for Raglan also.

Hamilton and Waikato Tourism was set up in 2011 by Kiri after the previous Waikato Tourism was disbanded in 2006.

“It’s still early days for us. When you’ve been out of the market place, let’s be honest, it takes a while to catch up,” she

Tourism was now the star of the New Zealand economy and predicted to earn $24 billion this year, surpassing the income from the dairy industry. About $1 billion of that money would be circulating around the Waikato district.

After five tough years when tourism was in decline, there had been huge growth in international visitor numbers over the past 18-24 months, with visitors also spending about 20 percent more than in the past.

“Visitors are spending about six times more than the average person, so we really need those visitors,” Kiri said.

The Chinese visitors were now spending double the time in New Zealand, at eight days, and were branching out into more independent travel in camper vans and rental cars.

Indian visitor numbers were also up 26 percent: “The thing we like about Indian visitors is they come in the shoulder season because it’s so hot in India then, they come in large groups and they usually have a bit of money to spend”.

The challenge was to get more New Zealanders to holiday within the country, as many Kiwis seemed to prefer to holiday abroad.

Another challenge was to combat the negative perception people had about the Waikato district. “We haven’t told our story and we haven’t promoted ourselves,” Kiri explained.

The organisation’s role was to promote the area to visitors, media and travel

businesses so people visited, stayed and spend money here, using the four tourism icons as Waikato’s point of difference”.

Waikato was exploiting a window of opportunity in the lucrative conference market because of its many conference venues, with Queenstown, Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington all planning to build big conference centres in the future.

“Conference delegates are our highest spending visitors over our international visitors,” Kiri said, adding that these delegates spent an average $300 a day on accommodation, meals and entertainment, “so it’s not just about the venue”.

The region’s themes and experiences, such as cycling, nature points of interest and farmers’ markets, were also promoted to the important domestic travel market.

Hamilton and Waikato Tourism received $1.2 million baseline funding from the six councils within its large geographical boundaries.

Its initiatives included short-escape campaigns for domestic travellers and a six-week, $1.6 million campaign with Tourism New Zealand and other North Island tourism organisations to encourage Australians to tour the North Island.

Hamilton and Waikato Tourism had a target of gaining $400,000 from private tourism operators this year, with businesses able to make a minimum investment of $290 to be included in the organisation’s far-reaching Visitors’ Guide.

My husband and I retired here about two years here from farming in Taranaki. I know God is real because he answers prayer. He cares about what we consider major issues of life, but also the small details.

Years ago I was a leader at a children’s camp, but found myself lying on a mattress on the cabin floor, unable to move from the waist down.

In the middle of the night I was in excruciating pain and went into shock.

This had happened before but in a smaller way and it usually passed quite quickly.

The girls in my cabin fetched the other leaders. We discussed going to

hospital and decided to wait until morning. Then they prayed for me.

The next morning I woke up and was still unable to move. But after lying there for a short time, I remember saying, “Well, what use am I to you lying here Lord?” I then threw back the blanket and in that instant something happened. I got out of bed and walked up the hilly path to the kitchen where the other leaders were praying. God had healed me.

Some years later I still had intermittent lower back pain. one Sunday morning a visiting minister was praying for people at the church we were attending. I asked him to pray

that God would heal me permanently.

He prayed and God answered. My back has been strong since then.

That’s a major. But God has a sense of humour and delights in blessing you to show he is real.

One morning I prayed that I would have marmalade for my toast (an unusual prayer, but it’s too long a story to tell here). Later, that very afternoon, a young girl from the school I worked at called in and said, “Mum made some marmalade this morning and thought you might like a jar!

I know God is real. He hears and answers prayer.

Kenya school graduation marks dream come true

Serendipitous meetings: Lucretia Perkins

F made a giant leap of faith and

opened Heittmann School, a boarding school for girls in Kenya.

This October, the first group of girls will be graduating, and along with this milestone Charlotte will be visiting the school for the very first time.

The dream all started when she was “19 or 20 years old.” Charlotte and her Kenyan ex-husband Githunji dreamed of opening a school in Githunji’s home town, Athi River, which is roughly an hour south of Nairobi.

Sixteen years in the making, the pair worked hard to get the school off the ground starting by purchasing a 10-acre plot of land in 2011.

“It started very small, eventually we expanded once we had enough funds and have started running cattle to produce milk and food, as well as starting gardens for the girls,” says Charlotte.

Being self-funded, both Charlotte and Githunji have spent tireless hours raising funds and organising loans on top of the day-to-day running of the school.

“Even though it’s a school in Kenya, the Raglan community have been very supportive. Ten dollars goes a long way in Kenya, every little bit counts,” she sa.

Heittmann School is named after

Peter and Anne Heittmann, who were instrumental in taking Githunji under their wing when he moved to Melbourne at the age of 22. His love and admiration for the pair (originally from NZ) inspired part of the dream and today the school has four classrooms with 45 girls enrolled.

“I just get tingly thinking about it. I can’t believe that a dream from 16 years ago has come to fruition,” said Charlotte.

Visiting Kenya for the first time, Charlotte has family flying in from England as well as family she has never met before in Kenya that will be joining her for the celebrations.

She is also related to world renowned elephant scientist Dr. Iain DouglassHamilton on her mother’s side. Charlotte hopes to meet up with Dr. DouglassHamilton’s daughters, Saba, a wildlife conservationist and Mara, a film producer while on her trip.

“I’m really excited to meet my family who I have been talking with for 17 years but have never met. Also going to the school and working with the girls in the garden and with the teachers – just the whiole thing really!” Charlotte said.

sn’t it funny how we meet people and Istory, on first impression paint their life oft wrong? In summer of this year I met a woman. Dark of skin, gracious of presence, I presumed she was Maori.

Lucretia (Bringer of the Light) Perkins – is not.

Her mother, Lois, was born in New York City. A first descendent of Romanian Jews, Lois’s grandparents landed on Ellis Island, New York, 80 year ago, to escape the persecution of Jews in Europe.

Lucretia’s great-grandparents, Ida and Joe Weismann, had five children but could only bring one child, they had to leave the others behind.

They cooked food from the homeland - as many immigrants do – and opened a Kosher restaurant in Brooklyn for fellow Jews.

Lucretia’s dad, Chris Perkins, from Surrey, England, spent from age of 19 travelling the globe - trying to discover the meaning of life.

He spent many years living on the beaches of Goa, India, before moving to the US where he met Lois, at a singles dinner.

Lois Wiessman-Singer, a single mum, was working as a paramedic on the mean streets of New York. Keen to escape the mayhem of New York, Chris and Lois married and moved to New Zealand.

When the plane landed, Lois felt like she had finally arrived home.

Settling in the Waikato with son Roger, Lucretia was born after five years. She was one of the first pakeha students to be accepted into the bilingual unit at Forest Lake Primary School under the nurturing eye of Mihi Rogers the first Maori female principal in New Zealand at the time. Passionate about kapahaka, Lucretia was strongly drawn to Maori tikanga.

At age 12 Lucretia’s parents separated and dad, Chris, moved to the infamous Centrepoint commune north of Auckland. He opted out of the conventional life, that of the nucleous family. Lucretia moved to Centrepoint when she was 14 and lived there until 17.

She describes her experience. “It was an amazing opportunity to witness and be part of NZ history “… I only saw the positive side, I believe it established a big part of my personality, the ability and nature to communicate with all kinds of people.” “That is how I learned my interpersonal skills which I use in life today.” “I made really strong bonds with the other children, they became my family” However Lu does remember being treated differently – if not unfairly – in high school.

She, and the other children had to endure police raids on their home as well as normal teenager pressure. It was hard for them to see their lives

plastered all over media and in a negative light. As a means of self-expression Lucretia discovered art at high school.

It was perceived that most people who arrived at Centrepoint were maladjusted, the disenfranchised, which was not at all the case, however, ironically, some turned to drugs and alcohol after the fallout. This would later influence Lucretia’s desire to work in prisons and rehabilitation centers focusing on art therapy.

Lucretia then went on to complete a diploma in Maori visual arts at Poihakena Marae while bringing up her first child Kai-Ngakau. Her tutor, Heeni Kerekere, passed on traditional knowledge and tikanga around Raranga. She introduced Lu to clay sculpture which remains as her favourite medium today.

In March this year, she graduated her BA at Wintec. No mean feat as she once again juggled intensive study and tutoring sculpture durring Summer school at Wintec around parenting her two children, Kai-Ngakau, 8 and Harlo, 3.

As I interview Lucretia I can emphathise the stuggle between mother and artist. As we talk Harlo demands attention. He is brewing a cold, very cute yet brewing.

So how was it to be selected as a summer school tutor for sculpture? I ask. “It was awesome! I felt just so honoured, I wasn’t an A grade student or anything – I just worked my arse off.”

You, like I, must wonder what this courageous formidable woman has in store for her future. Well more study apparently, Lucretia has her sights set on completing a degree in art therapy at the renowned Whitecliff in Auckland.

And what is your final vision I ask.

“To create a bipartisan village here in Raglan” she replies. An incubator for local artisans. “You can do so much when you’ve been nurtured by many different artists who also produce from the heart. I am a full believer that your surroundings affect your attitude to life. It’s all relevant really. Sharing resources is obvious to me. But managing the hierachy within may be the troublesome part,” she muses.

She also envisions a growing environment based on Steiner and permaculture principles. “I would like to plant a circular garden indicating the loop circle of life.” This maybe a utopian concept but one Lucretia is passionate about.

“The artists will give back to community, initiatives like art therapy for troubled teens.

veryone has a story as to how their business started; a redundancy, a desire to work for self, a passion or interest in a particular field of work etc.

Our journey into video production started at a funeral service. I was sitting there watching a slideshow of photos when I realised that I had never met the man whose funeral it was, but I was there because I knew his son.

I began thinking, wouldn’t it have been good if we were watching a video of his life, which showed him talking about the things he enjoyed, his memories of growing up, working and being a grandad.

Once home I started searching the internet and found there was no one around

who specialised in producing personal life stories. We have developed a format using video that presents a person’s story or event in an interesting, entertaining and creative way.

One of the most rewarding things we do is working with Waikato Hospice and Alzheimer’s as life review volunteers.

Over time our work has grown to include slideshows, business promotions, funerals, weddings, seminars and educational videos.

Whatever we do we always try to bring the story element into our work often using interviews that go behind the scenes to find out how it all started, for example a business; the people behind the business and their journey, funerals; friend’s and family’s memories not heard publicly on the day.

committee agreed that Messi was the player who epitomised the values that RJS is trying to bestow on their players.

The biannual Western Waikato Rural Cluster Speech Competition was held at Te Uku School last week.

Local students delivered persuasive speeches on a range of relevant topics including deforestation, reasons for not changing the NZ flag and the affect of devices on the younger generation.

Mathew Roughton (Te Uku) won the

year 5 and 6 mixed final with a convincing argument for why there should be no homework. Te Ariaa Garisau (Te Uku) was first place in the year 7 and 8 mixed final with a speech about the negative impact of social media. Ngakau Benseman (Waitetuna), a dog lover himself, cleverly outlined the downside of allowing dogs in public places and took home the trophy for the Open mixed final.

Rare brown tui spotted A rare brown tui has been spotted in Waitetuna. Janine Hartgill, kindly sent in this photo of the indigenous bird that has been hanging around at her property.

Brown tui only occur once in every 10,000 tui or so and according to the Department of Conservation the birds are rare but it is not unusual for tui and other birds to have slight variations in colours, with some albino tuis having been spotted in the past.
